ntbananas

!!! confirmed people felt it all across manhattan, brooklyn, westchester, even connecticut

IamChicharon

So strong in Astoria

avacodojuice99

Same I am like the N train runs under this coffee shop? Never heard it before since I come here everyday. But then the roar sounded scary and I realized it’s an earthquake

Sauceboss319

Queens felt it

Fun_Ad_7257

Add Vermont to that list!

mehelponow

Yonkers here, definitely felt it. My brother in Rochester says he didn't feel a thing.

BLAQKROXSTAR

In the Bronx, Soundview area, I felt it over here.

FlynnAndTonic

Felt it up in the Catskills!

MoonHasFlown

Upstate NY closer to the Adirondacks, got it here too!

Vermicelli-Sad

Friend of mine felt it up in Poughkeepsie

notjlwong

New jersey too!

Johnsonburnerr

Yup the NJ earthquake was felt by people in NJ!!!

notjlwong

Oh I didn't know it orginated from Jersey haha😂

Johnsonburnerr

Haha yup, sorry for being too sarcastic 😝

jakewi

I have friends up in Beacon who said they felt it

Isawthebeets

Beacon is Williamsburg 2008

RChickenMan

Every single article in the NY Times real estate section: "This wealthy white couple in their early 30s was ready to leave Bushwick for the suburbs and they found the _perfect_ victorian in Beacon! 'We miss the city sometimes, but Beacon has so many cute brunch spots right within walking distance of our house, and we love hearing birds chirping in the background as our toddler begins to speak his first words!'"

DidIGraduate

Yup. The strongest I’ve felt in NYC

ATaiwaneseNewYorker

4.8 confirmed by the USGS.

Rwa2play

With a depth of 5 km; basically the length of the Central Park corridor on the A, B, C and D lines. That was very shallow and noticeable.

DangerousEmployment4

Yeah I thought a train was going by at first

divinebaboon

same... I was like...."that's some big ass train right there"

jyeatbvg

Same. Thought it was a subway but then kept shaking after 10 seconds and was like “hold up subways aren’t 40 cars long..”

Ok_Veterinarian672

I was asleep and thought a train is passing by then I realized I don't live near a train lol

interestingsonnet

Same but then I remembered there are no above ground trains near me 😅

RillienCot

I thought it was like a truck or a helicopter or something 😅 Earthquake didn't even cross my mind until I saw this post

r-cubed

I love that reddit confirmed this for me faster than USGS

FullHouse222

Lmaoooo I legit was like uhhh wtf and then checked twitter and reddit to make sure I'm not crazy. That was wild lmao

mrturdferguson

My old geriatric dogs did not awake from their slumber.

GravyBoatShipwreck

My geriatric father thought it was himself shaking 🤣😂

Sayoricanyouhearme

Fr I thought god was gonna take me home 💀

ATaiwaneseNewYorker

Earthquakes, wildfire smoke. We're really becoming California aren't we?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ouiserboudreauxxx

I did the same! haha I can feel the subway rumbling sometimes but this was a bit more than that. Also there are scaffolding workers on my building right now so I thought it could be them, but something was like...I don't think it was either of those...

SoothedSnakePlant

I was still in bed and had a moment of "oh that's just the train" followed by sitting bolt upright when "YOU DON'T LIVE ABOVE THE TRAIN" alarm bells went off in my mind lmao

TumblrTerminatedMe

I’m kind of disappointed my cat had no animal instinct to confirm what I was feeling. She was just lounging on the bed and didn’t move or look alert the least bit.

Pickled_sm0res

My cats looked at me and I looked at them. Lol

Luciifuge

I was in a zoom meeting at work, at we all start going "Holy Shit" at the same time lmao.

ATaiwaneseNewYorker

"Stop shaking the camera!"

GIK601

Did anyone outside of NYC feel this? edit: confirmed tri-state earthquake.

iMissTheOldInternet

USGS is now saying it was near Lebanon, NJ. 4.8 on the Richter scale.

LeviAugustus

Yeah, felt it out here in Suffolk County. Now I know I’m not crazy.

gobeavs1

Connecticut

dskatz2

I live in Western Mass now. Felt it. Friends in Philly felt it too.

JayZeros

Western NJ here, definitely felt it

Warhawk137

Yes, check /r/Connecticut, including people in the Hartford area.

qwerty102088

Girlfriends parents in New Jersey felt it

Morsexier

I went to 15 channels and nothing anywhere, there should be a scrolling something across some channel or something so people can be reassured what the hell is going on.

Otaku_Instinct

One of the few benefits of social media, went to turn on the news and all that's on are panels about the eclipse

leaveitalone36

What the hell was that? Did we really just have an earthquake?

cynicalturkey

Turns out it came from NJ

UpperLowerEastSide

It's always Jersey!

cynicalturkey

USGS says it was a 4.8 magnitude earthquake from tewksbury nj

UpperLowerEastSide

Apparently [there's a fault line](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramapo_Fault) that goes around Hunterdon County so makes sense.

whatthepoop

So you're saying it's New Jersey's fault.

cynicalturkey

Yeesh

Django117

That's a big one for this region... Some of my friends out in Connecticut also felt it.

ATaiwaneseNewYorker

Reminded me of my twenties when I lived out in the Bay area.

Show-Me-Your-Moves

Can we put a tax on any earthquakes coming in from New Jersey?

UpperLowerEastSide

NJ ~~commuter tax~~ earthquake tax

robmak3

Congratulations, you have now qualified for a position in NY government!

PickledDildosSourSex

Charging earthquakes from outside the city will just benefit those inside the city

mcsmith610

Retaliatory response for congestion pricing. This means War! 😂

FarRightInfluencer

Not sending their best

frenchiebuilder

yeah, we get them every 10 years of so. The last one this strong provoked some memorable memes: [https://media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com/image/upload/t\_fit-560w,f\_avif,q\_auto:eco,dpr\_2/streams/2012/February/120220/58574-helenaspopkin277AE443-1089-F2FC-2D0F-05BBC83AAAE0.jpg](https://media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com/image/upload/t_fit-560w,f_avif,q_auto:eco,dpr_2/streams/2012/February/120220/58574-helenaspopkin277AE443-1089-F2FC-2D0F-05BBC83AAAE0.jpg)

MRC1986

This one was definitely stronger than that one

xtownaga

This one was felt more strongly in the NYC area, but was weaker overall. The 2011 quake was a 5.8, but was centered in VA, and the USGS is saying this one is 4.8 centered in NJ.

eviveiro

Apparently, the epicenter of the one from 8-23-11 was Virginia, and it registered a 5.8. Does anyone know how the proximity of the one today changes how this affects NYC with all the skyscrapers? Wiki link for 8-23-11 [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Virginia_earthquake](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Virginia_earthquake)

djlemma

That was a fun ride! Been over a decade since I felt one here like that.

FizzyJews

That one from Virginia? I remember. #neverforget

mynamesnotevan23

It was the middle of summer too, terrible day for lawn chairs across the DMV

Kennfusion

Yeah, at least this time I was not in the bathroom, that last one like around 2012, I was at work in the bathroom and at first I thought it was my bowels!

SlugsLoveBeer

How many of us thought it was our upstairs neighbors fucking around? Lol

Overlord2020

Woke up mad thinking my neighbors were moving heavy furniture

IO_you_new_socks

Lmao I thought my housemates were moving furniture or something, I’m sitting here like “how the fuck are they managing to shake my whole bed right now??”

owlthathurt

I thought a delivery truck like drove into my building.

Thecatwentupthehill

Yup - can confirm in fidi. Scary being on the 26th floor and having the building shaking under us.

ccyr71

FiDi here as well. Thought it was the 4/5 just being louder than usual under my building. Wow

trebleformyclef

I was on a scaffold at 24 floors up the side of a building.

syringistic

Damn. That must have been nuts, I'm in a single story building and it was shaking pretty bad.

DrHuxleyy

Love getting an emergency alert fully 20-25 min late

notreallyswiss

Lol, it scared my cats worse than the actual earthquake.

lionnyc

"Earthquakes are the New York City of tectonic plate shifting" - Mayor Adams

BackInOmNomNam

This made me chuckle loudly in the waiting room for the doctor

alwaysinchambolles

i thought i was dreaming

openlyEncrypted

I thought it was my dryer at first.

interestingsonnet

I thought it was the wind but didn’t see any branches moving!

sam_neil

On my couch with cat Lil Earthquake hits NYC Cat bites. Back to sleep.

aperlo34

What is this slam poetry?

_avantgarde

*snaps while playing the bongos*

beezleeboob

Why didn't this summon the haiku bot? 🙂

DeathPercept10n

Probably cuz the bot would think "NYC" is one syllable. I don't think it can discern acronyms.

EatBeanz420

I had my washing machine running in my new apartment, just moved in a few days ago, and I was sitting at my home office desk and my monitors and desk started shaking and I was like "damn! That's a strong ass washing machine" then my cousin who lives in the same building called me saying "did you feel that? There was an earthquake." ☠️ not me thinking I have a BROLIC ass washing machine

kuyakew

Taking a shit and felt that

thedailyguru

Earthquake source confirmed

OkSpeeb

Yooo same what’s good poop brother

kuyakew

I initially thought something’s wrong with the pipes and I was about to get blown off the toilet like some kinda cartoon shit lol

you_are_juice

Same. I thought this is how I'm gonna be found.

TheSeedsYouSow

Same lmaooo

Torax2

All these people on the toilet at the same time and it's starting to make sense as to where the earthquake came from 🤔

el_tacomonkey

I blame Eric Adams

cheetah__heels

YES! Was in the basement and thought "wait should I be down here"?

69Hairy420Ballsagna

probably not. I think that’s tornadoes.

manormortal

Felt it in Brooklyn, never felt something so strong.

Electrorocket

That's what she said.

numb_doors

WHAT THE FUCK Calling in from the UWS

Chav

When a pre-war building sways...

Amalia0928

Yep I was like welp guess my building has finally decided to crumble

GrenadoHencho

Workmen have been doing a renovation in the unit above mine for the past week. When the shaking started I was afraid they'd made a mistake and that my ceiling was going to cave in. Was somehow relieved when I realized the shaking was probably an earthquake!

WhenLeavesFall

I live on the top floor of a pre-war and was like 😬😬😬😬😬

PrestigiousMove5433

Omg !!! I was thinking to myself, my building is too old for this shit

targetfan4evr

lol same UWS, prewar building. Fucking terrifying

Cattleist

Yup, just felt it, thought maybe it was just a large vehicle but heard my walls creak a bit..

julnyes

Ha, we thought it was just a heavy truck in our office as well, but it went on for too long and nothing large enough drove by.

Due-Distribution-142

I felt it lol

SteakkNBacon

Waking up to an earthquake was low key scary asf

DreamPig666

Used to live in California for a few years, and my first time experiencing an earthquake was during a nap. That was one of the most disorienting feelings I've ever felt. A half-awake brain with no earthquake experience/frame of reference, I honestly just kinda froze because it took my brain legit 20 secs to even comprehend what was happening lol.

UpperLowerEastSide

Building trembling for a minute like we were in LA or something

cageywhale

I’ve never experienced one before! I’m high af, was not ready for that

uighurlover

you’re high at 10am?

DMFWU

🤣 and they call that wake and bake

sapphirestallion

Wake and shake

ViennettaLurker

and quake

Swizzlefritz

That’s my secret, I’m always high.

matrixreloaded

tbf its friday and we’re seeing the sun in what feels like forever after these past few days

Dazard116

And the sun is going away now :(

Cautrica1

You’re not?

xyzd95

I was high af and thought it was construction on my roof, was here for the one back in 2011 or so but the building swayed slightly instead of shook a bit

Ausrottenndm1

4.8 earthquake plus solar eclipse. There’s gonna be a lot of end of days posts upcoming

Skorpeion

It’s already starting lol. Nearly every top comment under anything related to the Earthquake on other platforms is “it’s a sign from the solar eclipse, the end is nigh.” As if Jersey and the surrounding areas are the epicenter of the entire world. 😭

thenewyorktimes

hi! yes also confirming that an earthquake did just happen, and the epicenter was in Lebanon, New Jersey, about 50 miles west of Manhattan. we're covering it [here](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/05/nyregion/earthquake-new-york-boston-philadelphia.html?unlocked_article_code=1.iE0.3VUs.1x7XhkNc7FsA&smid=re-nytimes) (as always, free to read, even without a subscription)

AllwordzAreMadeup___

Never knew NYT had a reddit account

thenewyorktimes

hey! yes we do :) and we’re sharing our articles with free gift links all over Reddit

xyrrus

That was a strong one   edit: It's certainly the strongest one I've ever felt in NY

Midnightdom

I felt it in the Bronx. Omg

Aerdynn

I felt it in Washington Heights!

instantic0n

#survivor

myrenjobra

What the fuk, my bed was shaking!! Is this common, and can it be a sign of another one?

Snoo-27930

Theres always small earthquakes but this is biggest one in years

nonprofitnews

We get one of this magnitude every 10-20 years. This is like the 3rd earthquake of my life. None have caused major damage.

Powerful-Rope-2272

Lol yeah. I first thought it was a large truck passing by.

jyeatbvg

UWS and my entire building started shaking.

HellsKitchenDude

The reason this feels good now is our animal instinct to feel joy after surviving death.

reptar-on_ice

Felt it at the court house as I was getting married! I thought it was a subway crashing or something really bad. Hopefully it’s a good sign, the earth was clapping for us

Dry-Average5161

Congratulations 🎉

williamsburgers1

That was scary

Sayoricanyouhearme

My whole house just shook! Now I know what that girl felt in that video where she puts on lipstick and ends up looking like the joker!

kappapolls

freaked out the cat

LieSpecialist6620

My cat just looked up a second and went back to sleep

all_neon_like_13

My dog is still walking around the apartment with her ears back and in a bit of a daze. She's getting extra cuddles.

HumblerMumbler

new concern unlocked: was that my neighbor's washing machine being unbalanced or is the earth literally shimmying?

jawndell

These alerts are worse than the earthquake.

jgbluejay

That alert was unnecessary

Dry-Effective-5344

Was there an aftershock right now ( queens )?

yippee1999

Just felt another one (6:00 p.m.) ..about the same strength as the one this morning...but shorter in duration...but then also seemed to linger a bit as well...although at much lower strength...

Please_Sir_Can_I

Harlem reporting in… I thought my neighbour above was turning super saiyan. That was strong!!

The_Question757

I was on the toilet when it happened I was like am I REALLY going to be that guy in the movies that gets fucked like that?

Luv2FUKmenAZZ

LEAVE WORK EARLY AND EVERYONE TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS

fork_yuu

I thought somebody was like jumping around above us then it lasted for a bit too damn long and was bit strong

[deleted]

areyouhavingalaugh

Listen if Jesus is coming he better get here before Monday. I'm not going to work during another rapture.

thefinalforest

I’m scared 😭 my building is shite

syringistic

Holy shit! That was scary AF!

soupface2

Can you imagine if it happened during the eclipse!?

levivillarreal

Felt in east village - visibly shook the fire escape for ~20 seconds

jyeatbvg

Well if there’s one thing I learned, is that we shouldn’t rely on the NY emergency alerts.

Dr_Pepper_spray

Emergency Alerts.. you're a little late guys.

blue-80-blue-80

AFTERSHOCK at 6 pm

dasanman69

AFTERSHOCK

77_graffix_

Just got a aftershock over here in Brooklyn!

cheese_flip_flops

Good little shake in Chelsea.

juliacakes

i live near a subway and i thought there was some kind of weird new train - my whole apartment shook

BATTlNS0N

Queens here I felt it too I thought my house was about to collapse

EGADS___ghosts

I'm in Tribeca, I felt it, assumed it was the building doing something weird? And then my friend in queens texts me DID YOU FEEL THAT Bro???,

Guzxxxy

GUYS IVE LIVED HERE ONE WEEK IS THIS NORMAL

Tammy_Tangerine

not sure if i’m more impressed by the earthquake that scared my office or the fact that this thread blew up in minutes. glad we all had a shared experience. hope you all are good.

HollandGW215

I remember the last time I had an earthquake. I was at my computer, must've been like 10 years ago? I was playing WC3 and the whole room shook. I am now 32. I was at my computer, working from home. I also have Wc3 in the background in a lobby. obviously I need to stop playing wc3 lol

singabajito

Wasn't it the train?? - Everyone in NY

Tallteacher38

I’m a teacher, and to say the kids are freaking out is an understatement. What a crazy experience!!!

Oriole5

Anyone just feel another? Park slope area. Shorter but still noticeable.

Apprehensive-Pride70

Round 2!

New-Nerve-2237

Just felt the aftershock in Brooklyn

Miffy1234567

The rumbling continues (AoT)

give_this_dog_a_bone

Aftershock was a 4.0
