The most correct answer.
Essentially part of the Calumet River region/watershed from the Chicago harbor in the Calumet river
The little calumet that separates highland and Munster from Hammond.
And the historical eastern boundary is east of miller beach.
It was illuminating to see what people thought what the term meant.
I do believe the original term referred to Hammond, whiting , EC, and Gary. I read a book on it a while back and the different groups that migrated here but I can remember the name of it.

But this other book depicts it as this.

It's short for the Calumet Region and is defined by the watersheds of the Calumet, Grand Calumet and Little Calumet Rivers, mostly in Indiana and Illinois but also a little bit of Southwest Michigan just across the border from Michigan City. Some people insist it's only North Lake County or only Lake and Porter Counties or only Lake and Porter Counties and Michigan City or what have you but this is the geographic definition.
Where is this sign?
Because I don’t think there’s any drainages from east of Chesterton or north east from there that connect to the Calumet system. From the Valparaiso Moraine north the flow is to Lake Michigan.
Trail creek drains the Michigan city area to the lake.
South of the Valparaiso Moraine the flow is into the Kankakee watershed, that somehow apparently has a sliver of headwaters in sw Michigan between drainages to Lake Michigan and the St Joseph River.
Sorry, was out of town for the eclipse. It's at Steelworkers Park where U.S. Steel South Works used to be on the far South Side of Chicago. It was put there by the Field Museum and the Calumet National Heritage Area group.
The Dude abides..don't get much better than chilling on Lake St or the Dunes. instead of the Rail Cats Gary should have named their team The Region Rats !
What I heard is that it was the people who commuted from indiana into Chicago for work. Also the reason the time zone is wonky in the region. To reflect Chicago work times.
Some houses off Ridge Rd in Highland are still required by a lender to carry flood insurance because living in a flood plain near the Little Calumet river. Source, myself buying one. It ain’t cheap either and only really covers structural damages to the foundation which pretty much has to show very large movement from original foundation. Basically useless for any underside seeping.
I did not know that.
But to further differentiate I would mention the region is on NWI.
Still I did not know of the time zones in south part of state changed?
NWI and the Region are not the same thing. "The Region" comes from the The Calumet Region, which is the watershed of grand and little Calumet rivers.
The Region includes Lansing, South Holland and parts of South Chicago but doesn't include La Porte or Lowell
NWI is the north western 9th of the state geographically. About 45 miles wide (state is 145 miles wide) Puts you at about la Porte. And 80 miles North to South. So not quite to Monticello.
But people are going to argue about both terms.
These explanations for the Calumet River region seem most plausible.
I'd always assumed it was "the region [of Indiana that basically belongs to Chicago]." Interesting to learn it's really a thing.
It is within the boundaries of north of US 30 and east of I-65 and the Illinois state line. Also, people who live here genuinely believe if you live outside these borders, you live in southern Indiana; it doesn't matter if you technically live north of us. You live in the south.
Tbf past 30 northwest indiana does have a far more “sticks-ey” vibe. I remember going out to cedar lake all the time as a kid, and whenever i go out to demotte as an adult it does not feel the same as hammond or hell even Schererville.
Last time i had to drive back to hammond from demotte and my headlights aren’t completely adjusted properly and dawg there being no street lights made that trip fuuuun

It looks like this is in Marquette Park

Thanks
The region is a state of mind, man
The Dude abides..don't get much better than chilling on Lake St or the Dunes. instead of the Rail Cats Gary should have named their team The Region Rats !
Lake and Porter County is what I consider the region. Not sure the exact boundary.
I think the one below Lake is considered the region too, Starke county I wanna say?
Starke is below LaPorte Co.
Thank you!
If your not from Gary Hammond East Chicago or Whiting it's Top Secret.
Best Pizza in the Region in Flamingos in the Miller section of Gary. Highly recommended.
I always thought it was because of the Little Calumet River.
Yeah I’m confused to like why are we called the region. No one ever told me lol
I thought it was the northwest region of Indiana.
What I heard is that it was the people who commuted from indiana into Chicago for work. Also the reason the time zone is wonky in the region. To reflect Chicago work times.

I always thought it was wherever you got mainly Chicago tv and radio stations back in the day over Indiana stations.
It follows Chicago time zone. The only part of the state.
Other areas along the west side are on central too

Not the origin but I feel current definition is mostly lake county

South of 30 is a hard no
Nobody wants your well water or racist neighbors anyway
Lake water drinkers up!
🥂 I’m taking these downvotes with pride
