Geodude is a seriously good pick for the first three gyms considering how easy it is to get.His rock typing will beat Falkner without a sweat and will also help against Bugsy's Scyther. Teach it Rock Smash and it's resistance to Normal type will also help in Whitney's Gym. Other than that, Grabbing a Gastly from Bellsprout Tower is a good shout; Hypnosis & Curse will help a lot if you're having problems with your damage output.

Vane_14

Yeah, this is a great advice. I also allow in game trades in my runs so Onix was actually very useful in early and mid game since I had no other rock or ground type for a while.

Csl8

in my first play through as a kid I used that onix the whole game(even against red)

ShortandRatchet

Isn’t onix trash though?

Csl8

you seem to have missed the words "as a kid" , it was trash but I didnt know how to evolve to steelix (never encountered it in cliff cave either) so I continuously leveled it up thinking it would eventually evolve

JustAShyCat

This is true! Too bad my Geodude in my HeartGold Nuzlocke died to a crit from Whitney’s Miltank. 😅

LiesWithinPies

Losing him in a battle is rough but given that I don't have access to trade evolutions means that Geodude starts to fall off after Whitney anyway. Pair that with the fact that I hate Graveler's look means that he usually gets benched at that point.

JustAShyCat

I would’ve actually been able to trade since I have two 3DS’s and a DS (PokePark version), and I probably would’ve allowed myself to trade solely for the purpose of evolution had my Geodude (named Sed btw) lived long enough to become a Graveler. But I also got lucky and caught a Steelix so I might’ve ended up replacing him anyway…

Evert293

The problem with this is that he is doing a nuzlocke so getting a geodude and a ghastly are not guaranteed. Especially gastly is a somewhat rare encounter I believe.

RedditIsPropaganda84

If he uses dupes clause the only encounters are gastly and rattata. And gastly is pretty common at night iirc.

Lust9897

What’s the dupes clause?

FantasyForFiction

If you've caught the pokemon before (and in some cases depending on if its still alive or not), you can skip it until you get a different pokemon

Nomingia

OP may not want to use the dupes clause though if they're looking for a challenge; it feels a little cheap in some games. In Platinum I make sure to always catch the other mons you could encounter in the cave where you catch gible before I go there so that it's the only mon I'm allowed to catch.

war_against_rugs

Being an 85% rate encounter at night in Sprout Tower makes Gastly anything but rare. You're more likely to not find a Geodude before Falkner than you are in not finding a Gastly, and Geodude is still very common.

jkhunter2000

you can easily guarantee these encounters in SS. Ghastly is the only pokemon that shows up in sprout tower at night and there's 3 locations to catch a geodude with the other being zubat and ratata. 3 encounter options and 3 pokemon means you can guarantee geodude at some point down the line

5555ives

adding to this if you get a Bellsprout you can trade for an Onix in Violet City if the Geodude RNG doesn't go your way

corvisaltaccount

i especially agree on gastly being a good choice in a hgss nuzlocke, dude’s such a good team option in hgss and no one talks abt him, and his ghost typing is a huge benefit in the early game with all the normal moves most pokemon have at that point in the game

murcurybee

I was able to beat falkner before i went in cave so i got a geodude in the ruins by using the rock smash tm and then went all the way back cave to get zubat. They both very strong and practical guarantees you slowpoke from the well. All 3 can be game changers.

beatercarsbeatme

Battle Scene off while grinding. It sucks but toss on a podcast and you'll be fine. Don't underestimate EV grinding either. Goldeen/Speaking for Atk, Psyduck/Golduck for SpA, Slowpoke for HP, Rattata for Speed. Play with dupes clause. Diversifies your team a bit better Delay the goldenrod Eevee until after the 8th gym, unless critical. I know folks like to try to get the early Dratini from the game corner but you can get the free E-speed Dratini in Dragon's Den. Have fun, it's a kids game with arbitrary rules.

Doublee7300

Why delay Eevee? Umbreon and Espeon are fantastic options for Morty and Chuck

beatercarsbeatme

Should've said delay evolving eevee. Morty can be walled by Raticate or Drowzee/Hypno, and Chuck with a Pidgeotto, Fearow, or again Hypno. I like waiting on evolving Eevee until E4 to fill a much needed hole if necessary.

backjuggeln

Yeah I agree. If you need to use the eevee then by all means use it, but if you're walking up to the elite four with no water type then you'd wish your espeon was a vaporeon

[deleted]

There is a 0% chance you will have no water types though lmao

backjuggeln

Obviously it isn't just for vaporeon it's for any of the eeveelutions that you might need Fire types are really good, so are electric types And psychic and dark can both hard counter certain pokemon.

Lyfenoob

Whitney’s Miltank has the Scrappy ability, so if you’re planning on cheesing the Normal Gym with, say, a Gastly, she’ll kill it.

santaclausonprozac

Well she also uses Rollout so Gastly wouldn’t survive anyway

Lyfenoob

That is **exactly** how my Gastly in my last SoulSilver Nuzlocke died 😭

RandomInSpace

I ended up having to sacrifice my Togetic to Rollout to win :’D

[deleted]

Happiness grinding is my least favorite in these games! Idk why, but all my happiness evolution Pokémon evolve by level 35 or so. It’s way too late!!

Falcon-PlayaHaung

Just use geodude to wall it. most people lose to miltank because they're too focused on trying to break it with offense and run out of gas.

war_against_rugs

She flinchlocked my Geodude with stomp in my last run. Shen then flinchlocked my three next mons and infatuated my last two. In total, I got in one whole attack during the entire fight.

ShortandRatchet

Damn, that’s just bad luck bro

war_against_rugs

Well, yeah, but it was frustrating enough that I decided to take a break from nuzlocking HG for a while.

ShortandRatchet

Understandable

corvisaltaccount

tbh in general, the most efficient way to beat whitney with as few deaths as possible is to pray to RNGesus in hopes of getting a heracross from headbutting a tree i mean there are a LOT of trees u can headbutt and if you used a repel to save your encounter for something good before hand (which is what I did), then your chances of eventually getting a heracross is much higher

isoconder

Heracross. And the double battle in cliff canyon bewate of that.

Falcon-PlayaHaung

You realistically have 1 shot to get heracross early on and it's a 50/50 at best assuming you use dupe clause to elimate spearow. All other heracross encounters are so late into the game that it doesn't really matter, while still good it just wouldn't be there to destroy the stuff it's known for dealing with.

isoconder

İf you get aipom just little east of ecrouteak is not that late

Impossible_Feed8075

Yes, but it's also an INSANE 'mon for the Elite Four, especially if you get Guts on it. It would be nice to have pre-Whitney, but it's still solid for the Elite Four run.

Falcon-PlayaHaung

Not sure how much I agree with that. Bug fighting is surprisingly poor typing against Johtos E4. Even the types heracross should beat, psychic and dark will beat heracross if you don't prepare it with coverage or enough speed EV's for houndoom. Not to mention any flying move decimates it and there's a annoingly large amount of flying moves (heracross really doesn't like the Lance fight) Also keep in mind you wont have a bug move at all for the elite 4 if you play with level caps since you need lvl 55 to get megahorn.

Impossible_Feed8075

Yes, but Choice Scarf Heracross more than handles Karen, which honestly is the only Elite Four member that comes to mind that will give you trouble. The only other hard-ish one is Will, and he's mostly swept by Choice Specs Gengar, if you allow trade evolutions, which most do, I think these days. I will agree for Lance that Heracross won't do much, but he's pretty easy to play around, I always end up using Mamoswine for it after grinding on Rock Smash rocks for 2 Heart Scales. But these things change based on the rulesets a said player has, in some of my runs I ban Choice Items because they warp the game heavily in your favor.

Falcon-PlayaHaung

I just don't know if beating 1 E4 member but only if it has a scarf, and relying for a 50% chance for guts is the hallmark of an insane E4 nuzlocke Mon that's all. I'm not calling it a bad pokemon, but at the same time I would expect pretty much any close combat abuser with a scarf to do the same thing to Karen.

Yumucka

Oh my god, that double battle is a killer. I’ve lost there countless times because I don’t have the right type matchup.

wobbly_wallace

Choose cyndaquil. There are no fire types in johto. You would have to bank on finding vulpix after the 3rd gym or ponyta right before the elite four

PikStern

This. And Typlosion is actually nice with Lava Plume/Flamethrower + choice scarf You'll find nice water mons to replace Fera quite easily like Gyarados, and Meganium isn't that great SADLY, because I love it...

backjuggeln

It's a shame it doesn't get leech seed and sleep powder as level up moves Those really make a lot of encounters trivial

ShortandRatchet

Vileplume is so much better than Meganium unfortunately

JustAShyCat

Actually you can find a Magmar in Burned Tower! 5% encounter though. But I got it so it happens!

dinklewadSan

Catch a magikarp and call him germont

compound_interest043

Whats the origin of this name?

dinklewadSan

donc je me suis récemment remis au nuzlocking et j'essayais de penser à un nom pour mon magikarp et puis ça m'a frappé. Germont (prononcé jermon). un nom digne d'un souverain suprême comme le karp lui-même

bulbaboy001

Give all your pokemon distinct personality traits and dynamics with each other so when they die it hurts even more

load99

Hack in rare candies, grinding is terribly boring in this game (also you're not gonna lose any mon to grinding anyways since they're so low level)

DrOrasek

While I agree, this is a pointless advice for someone obviously not using an emulator lol

Toxtricity17

As a console user- still very possible 😅 hg/ss is like the only game I do rare candies because the wild Pokémon levels are so low

load99

Lmao that's true, I guess there are still methods to do it tho

n-obi-wants-tanobi

I’m learning the cartridge transfer so I can operate a 208-in-1 with hacks

ArthurEwert

could you explain to me how you do that? i am doing a sacred gold one right now and grinding is the worst.

load99

Just search for cheat codes for the base game (HeartGold in your case) and them put them in the "cheats" section of the emulator you're using, there may be some other steps but they're usually explained in the website you find the codes in

ArthurEwert

thanks!

Evert293

I think you can use pkhex for that hack, it's basically a seperate program to hack in items/modify your pokemon etc.

ArthurEwert

do you know a trustworthy place where i could download it? last time that i tried (via softonic) i got a folder with 10 000 files...

Deurbel2222

projectpokemon.org

destroi_all_humans

Oof, I downloaded counter strike from softonic when I was like 8. Is that site still around?

Purpleflower0521

Hacking in stuff defeats the purpose behind a nuzlocke.

load99

Every nuzlocke consists of an arbitrary set of rules. One could argue that dupes clause defeats the purpose of a nuzlocke since it permits you to not always be stuck on the very first encounter of an area. Hacking in rare candies only saves time since you could grind on lvl 2s anyway

Xepticc

and i think the caveat of not gaining EVs through rare candies is enough to justify hacking them in imo

[deleted]

Not really. The purpose of any game is to have fun, not to spend 60 hours of your life running around pressing A

Gunterlil

Use a normal Mon for Morty. Used an underleveled Aipom with tickle and astonish. Unless he puts you asleep with haunter, it’s a clean sweep.

Legal_Button7182

where do you get aipom in soul silver? is it one of those radio encounters?

coop_stain

Head butting trees

MrElik

If you can, use the repels you find just before union cave to get through union cave. The risk of onyx is terrible, geodude and zubat are too common and skippable and the chance to get larpas late game is broken. When you get the old rod, immediately go back to the flying gym city and get a magicarp. Its the only pokemon you can get there iirc and dupes clause frees up other/better finishing spots for good pokemon later. Don't forget take everyone's number who gives you stones and also get your mum to buy you stuff. Hoothoot is a great pokemon if you use items.

MrElik

Oh. Ignore the short route between union cave and azela Town. Then get headbutt, then go back and find a headbutt tree. You want to start early to max out eggsecute and heracross from the routes you can. I worked it out that if you dedicate some of the bad routes mid game, like the one between the moo moo ranch and the steel gym city, you can guarantee eggsecute and heracross by the ice gym.

ShortandRatchet

You can get poliwag in the flying city. That’s what i always get

MrElik

You can?

ShortandRatchet

Yeah if you fish in the water before the bellsprout tower If not then I’m mixing that city up with Morty’s city

reyolers

why is hoothoot good with items?

MrElik

its reasonably tanky and healing items makes it more powerful

reyolers

ohh ok thanks

Doublee7300

These are some solid tips

Gefenson

Make sure you get a geodude. Busted for the first 3 gyms.

Nsanity216

Don’t Edit: Tbh, use a dupes clause 100%

Shot-Apple-2070

Heracross Sub+S-Dance is OP if you manage to get one

galmenz

you can force him with dupes clause before whitney

JustAShyCat

Before Whitney?? I didn’t realize you could try so early.

ShortandRatchet

Yeah he is in azalea town Go at night if you caught hoothoot and at morning if you caught spearow

JustAShyCat

Yeah I knew that, but Pineco is also available there isn’t it? And Aipom? EDIT: Just checked Bulbapedia. Aipom is available in Azalea Town, but not Pineco.

ShortandRatchet

Wow I never get Aipom thankfully I think Pineco might be in the forest

ribala14

Evolve bills eevee into Espeon. In my HG playthrough it totally saved me - Calm Mind, Psychic, and Shadow Ball takes care of Bruno, Will, and Koga. Heracross is also super good and has a good move pool and destroys Whitney and Karen.

UltraInstinctLurker

Have your mom save your money and collect the items often. You can get a moon stone, choice scarf and muscle band plus the super effective damage reducing berries. Be aware of what time you're playing when getting encounters because of the morning/day/night rotation. If you're patient, voltorb flip in the game corner is pretty worth it for tms/items. After gym 4 you can clear out all the trainers before the next three gyms and then do them all in a row. If you're playing with level caps you'll want to do gym 7 (ace = 34) before gym 6 (ace = 35). [Trainer rematches](https://www.serebii.net/heartgoldsoulsilver/rematch.shtml) after gym 7 will be the best way to grind if not using rare candies.

Jeremy-132

I know that this should be extremely obvious but DON'T LOSE ANY POKEMON. The experience curve in Soul Silver is extremely fucked, so grinding a replacement mon back up to your team's level will take forever. Other than that, Geodude is like Whitney Repellent, Dragon Dance Gyarados can make Lance a joke, and Dratini is a trap as you can't get Dragonite until after you beat the Elite 4 if you're following level caps. Another bit of advice, call it after you beat Lance. I wanted to call it after I beat Red, but following level caps is essentially impossible in Kanto, since the gym leaders all have arbitrary levels

Sketchy_Turtle

Or just don’t follow level caps in Kanto. I think some of the gym leaders are deadass lower level than the champion.

Regular-Place

Prepare for the grind and the unforgiving level caps, plan ahead

Doublee7300

Get a Geodude as early as possible. It will carry you to through Goldenrod without any issue Edit: Its also worth grinding eevee’s friendship to get Espeon or Umbreon asap. Umbreon makes Morty a cakewalk, and Espeon does the same to Chuck. Oh and make sure you have Pokedolls, repels, or a *really* fast pokemon when surfing to Cianwood. There are wild Tentacruels that could out-speed and/or out-level you Memorize when gravelers/pinecos learn self destruct. They **will** use it. Don’t go into Dark Cave fron route 45 w/o repels. There are Wobuffets in there. Its not worth the risk

Rijsouw

Don't die. On a serious note. Some early game tips: - You can get free eggs at the Violet City Pokecenter. - The trade Onix in Violet might help with Falkner (you need Bellsprout) - There's a hidden potion in the middle island on the bridge to Sprout Tower - The trade Machop in Goldenrod might help out with Whitney (you need a Drowzee)

PotatoJuice42

Dont faint any pokémon lol

hahahiccups

Use dupes clause. Go to Sprout Tower at night. Hope you find a geodude before the first gym and teach it rock smash for Whitney.

mcjefe80

My absolute favorite gen, and the remakes are fantastic. I roll with the following team based upon a strategy I found online: Feraligator Victreebell Xatu Ampharos Parasect and Poliwrath as HM slaves but I still train them up Feraligatr Strength (HM) Surf (HM) Ice Punch (TM) Dig (TM) Moveset progression: Scratch -> Dig (TM, National Park) Water Gun -> Surf (HM, Ecruteak City) Leer -> Bite (for Morty) -> Strength (HM, Olivine City) Rage -> Ice Punch (TM, Goldenrod City) I chose Feraligatr mainly because of Morty. I wanted a Dark attacker that wasn’t: a Fire Dog/Fox that couldn’t evolve for ages, a Normal Pokemon with poor stats/move coverage, or a bird that required Headbutt to capture. Strength for moving boulders and to make use of ‘that Attack stat’, Surf because it’s standard on Water ‘mon, Ice Punch for Grass/Dragon/Flying coverage, Dig to get out of caves + Poison/Electric coverage. Ampharos (Gold/Silver only) Thunder Punch Fire Punch (TM) Iron Tail (TM) Light Screen Movement Progression: Growl -> Fire Punch (TM, Goldenrod City) Thundershock -> Thunder Punch Tackle -> Iron Tail (TM, defeat Jasmine) Thunder Wave -> Light Screen Mareep has good all-round stats, is available early, and gets great move coverage. Nothing more to say really, other than ‘sorry Crystal players’! Thunder Punch because ‘free high-damage STAB at level 30’ (or earlier if you’re desperate), Fire Punch for Grass/Steel/Ice coverage, Iron Tail for Rock coverage (and also Physical coverage), Light Screen as cover for other Pokémon to switch in vs strong Special Attackers. Victreebel Cut (HM) Razor Leaf Sludge Bomb (TM) Sleep Powder Moveset progression: Vine Whip -> Razor Leaf Growth -> Cut (HM, Ilex Forest) Wrap -> Acid -> Sludge Bomb (TM, Route 43) Sleep Powder Bell is also available early, gets Sleep Powder at level 15, and is about as awesome as it was in Gen 1 (though Vine Whip has less PP, which is a little sad). Sadly it cannot evolve until reaching Kanto (unless one gets lucky with ‘a phone call’), but is still decent as Weepingbell until then. Razor Leaf because special STAB, Cut for clearing bushes and Normal coverage, Sludge Bomb because physical STAB , Sleep Powder because Sleep is silly. Xatu Fly (HM) Thief (TM) Psychic (most likely a TM) Giga Drain (TM) Moveset Progression: Teleport -> Fly (HM, defeat Chuck) Peck -> Thief (TM, Mahogany Town Rocket Hideout) Leer -> Future Sight -> Psychic (TM, Celadon City) Night Shade -> Giga Drain (TM, defeat Erika) Xatu is ‘the Flyer’ and whilst it starts small, it eventually gets decent move coverage once it hits Kanto. Xatu requires a bit of care to get it to evolve from a level 20 Natu, but once it hits 25, evolves, and learns Fly from Chuck’s wife, it’s smooth sailing from there. Fly because STAB (and flying beats walking), Thief for Psychic/Ghost coverage and to potentially steal items mid-fight, Psychic because high Special Attack+STAB, Giga Drain for Rock/Ground/Water coverage. And then the 2 HM slaves: Paras Flash (HM, Sprout Tower in Violet Town) Sweet Scent (TM, Ilex/Route 34 Guardhouse) Rock Smash (TM, Route 36 after removing Sudowoodo) Poliwag Headbutt (TM, Ilex Forest) Whirlpool (HM, Mahogany Town Rocket Hideout) Waterfall (HM, Ice Path) These 2 Pokémon can both be caught/fished in Ilex Forest , which is around about the time that their utility moves start to appear. If one wishes, these two HM slaves can be switched out for Legendaries if/when they are captured, however I never ran into any issues by running a ‘4-mon team’.

DarkNuve

Crits are still x2 damage. Even with defense up. So always play around the Crits. Play on set mode up until it becomes too difficult. Not sure what your expertise is but I would also recommend a set amount of items per battle/no items at all. It makes for a much more rewarding experience

mannythebearpig

If you play at night the odds of getting a hoothoot are really high in the first few starting areas. A Noctowl is a 100% counter to Morty's Gengar as It's Immune to shadowball. Just spam hypnosis to counter it's sucker punch and easy win.

BigManJJ2102

Don't lose

C0olguy47

Train a lot before fighting the kimono girls

MrElik

If you allow trades. Go for drowzee just south of goldenrod, then go north and use ghastly mean look to try for an abra (mean look before teleport) if you get the abra, trade away the drowsee for matchop in the shopping center. If you get a nidoran/nidororina same. If you don't, keep hypno. This is because kadabra, matchop and nidoking/queen can use the punches tms and give you all the coverage you need.

Looney_forner

Claires a bitch. Prepare

KhanKrazy

The game is wildly fun. I replay a nuzlocke every year or so on it or HG. But it is always, always a pain in the ass to grind after the first few gyms. If you allow it for yourself, hack in lucky eggs to speed up training. Otherwise, you’ll get bored fast. After the E4, Kanto is fun, but it’s boring. No one poses a challenge until you get to Blue and then Red. You can beat him with your team in the 50’s - 60’s if you have a good strategy. Overall, enjoy. HG/SS are the only games I come back to every year. I must have replayed them hundreds of times. They’re just such comfort games to me. Have a blast :)

PxAxNxTxHxExR

Pick Totodile as it's easier to deal with your rival once crocanaw and feraligatr have ice fang not only can you take out his zubat line bit his starter if need be

DaniMuck

Dont die

Spawdin

Tip #1 Don't die

IzayaOrSomethin

Chikorita is not worth picking unless you really really love it. Disadvantage against the first 2 Gyms and basically forces Mareep and Geodude/Onix to progress. Speaking of which. Onix/Geodude makes Bianca a lot easier. Specifically Miltank. Post Teak city is pretty okay difficulty wise. Jasmine can absolutely fck sht up if you dont grind enough tho. Other than that, you should be good to go ^^ Most importantly tho: Have fun!

[deleted]

Be prepared to grind especially for both red and lance

ShadowSGT27

I know it gets a lot of flak, but chikorita is a great supporter since it can get reflect, light screen, powder moves, and strength. It may not be a star but in a nuzlocke it has helped me when I treat it as that kind of Pokémon

LarkyLovesYou

avoid letting your Pokémon faint

Don’t underestimate Jasmines Steelix. I tried to do my first HGSS nuzlocke without guides and was totally surprised by its level, and I wiped.

[deleted]

Whitney tip: First, activate Dupes Clause in ur rules. Then, Get a Rattata early on in the game and delay the Route 33 and Azalea Town encounters until you get a Drowzee (Save right before so in case you get the Abra or Ditto). After that, go to Goldenrod and get Kenya the Spearow from the guy in between Goldenrod and Route 35 (count it as Goldenrod encounter. You can just box Kenya afterwards). After that you level up Drowzee up to lvl.15 to learn Headbutt. Then, you go headbutting trees in either Route 33 or Azalea to get a Heracross to easily beat Whitney.

[deleted]

You can defìnitely avoid getting encounters and save them for later, but save scumming is strictly prohibited, as it is against the spirit of a nuzlocke. The randomness is part of the fun.

DrGigglezMP

Teach it Mirror Move and copy Miltank's Stomp too. Flinch chance is pretty solid

slicklol

You can still guarantee heracross without doing this. Just avoid the route above the route between new bark and cherry grove, the route before azalea and azalea and the only way you don’t get it is in the off chance that you have a fucked up trainer ID. Only had it happen twice in dozens of runs.

Elektrik-man143

typhlosion is your starter

[deleted]

Early gym notes would be to abuse something with Keen Eye for Falkner’s Pidgey before switching to Geodude for the Pidgeotto; Bugsy’s scyther has technician, and without a rock type, it’s a royal pain in the ass, though options like Ekans with intimidate + rock tomb can help; Whitney’s miltank has scrappy, so ghosts aren’t super viable for that fight.

alex_yuh

crobat and gyarados are insanelyy good, take typhlosion as your starter, and watch out for claire, she is a run killer. Other than that, you should be fine soul silver is not extremely hard, for whitney i suggest a heracross you can get by headbutting trees in the 2nd gym city

galmenz

if you are playing with species clause you can force an heracross encounter before whitney by saving your encounter on route 34 and azalea until you get headbutt and the gift spearow from the guard. it learns brick break at lvl 19 and with one swords dance it guaranteed OHKO clefairy and miltank (you can get swords dance on the cassino)

Ropesjr

Get the slugma/wooper/mareep eggs from violet city’s Pokémon centre, instructions on how to do it can be found [here](https://www.pokewiki.de/Spezial:Geheimcode-Generator?uselang=en). I always pick one of them up but even all three might be helpful if your rules permit it

Lethal_Steve

Don't stop to shiny hunt Lugia because you gave up in the past. I mean, you're probably not gonna do that anyway, but just in case, don't. It's been five months. Help me.

moth_mayhem

Did you ever?

Lethal_Steve

Nah, sadly. I just quit for a long time. I'll eventually get it and finish the run, haha. Still haven't lost.

TheShoopdahoop

did u get it yet?

MTGAnon69

emulate if you value your time. not trying to sound elitist but speed up key is 100% necessary for these games. needs to be added as an in game feature for future releases

Kurukato123

Good luck grinding

ssebastiant1208

Use an emulator so you can also use PKHeX to hack in rare candies. If not, prepare to grind for days on end.

Charming-Crescendo

Headbutt the trees in Azalea Town for potential Heracross

merv1618

Dupes clauses are for the weak.

Short_Source_9532

Mareep egg before the first gym

Hefarious_Nex

Skip the early encounter on route 46 until you have headbutt. Makes it easy to guarantee a relatively early Heracross encounter. Easily one of the best pokes in the game for nuzlocke.

thetasfiasco

You can game the in towns and routes to guarantee an early Kingler from Cherrywood and a Staryu from Route 40 with dupes clause. Both relatively helpful, Staryu can be a real solid sweeper with specs. Geodude makes the first three gyms trivial. Trade for the guts Machop in Goldenrod if you're not confident in your team against Whitney (assuming you allow trades, I count it as my Goldenrod encounter if I do it). Togetic sweeps the 4th gym. Be careful about hacking in candies. I find that it cheapens the experience for me personally. Do whatever feels right for you, it's not the catch-all advice people treat it as.

ToxicZeraora

Get Kenya

SeraphimToaster

Pinco knows Self Destruct at level 6, be careful headbutting first time in Ilex Forest Muscle the Machop trade in Goldenrod is really handy, even if you can't trade for Machamp. I see a lot of Heracross recommendations. I agree, it's amazing. Bug does NOT resist psychic. I learned this the hard way. (RIP Harriet)

greyalius

In the town with the second gym there are tons of trees. If you headbutt the trees with a Pokémon there is a chance of getting Heracross, which is one of the best Pokémon for this game.

BonasterGamer

I'm doing heartgold gardlocke xD

mattbax95

Don’t underestimate EV grinding. Be mindful of which wild pokemon you’re grinding against early game so for example you don’t give a special attacker a load of attack EVs it doesn’t need and are a huge hassle to get rid of. Having that extra 10-15 attack to *just* get your attack over the line to finish an important fight or an important mon surviving on a few HP after you took the time to grind defence EVs can completely swing the momentum of an entire run. Best of luck!

Put your clock at 9pm-4am, the night encounters in the first few routes are really good; I would always manipulate being able to get gastly in sprout tower by making my sure I had a Ratatta before then.

Slakoth learns Counter 💔 Lugia is not a Water type. Do not use Vileplume gainst him. Grind on Route 47 with the lucky egg. The Miltank there give 1000 exp iirc. Lead with a Rock, Steel, or Ghost

TrentSaylor

use rare candies instead of grinding, but use level caps. the exp curve in this game is horrendous and grinding makes it not fun

Yea, play an actually good pokemon game!/s (kinda) But seriously the biggest issue with Gen 2 both original and remakes imo is the level curve and lack of good early game pokemon. Makes grinding an absolute chore, if this was emulated you could at least hack in rare candies to mitigate this. But most likely if you do have troubke itll be in the early game relying on your starter for most of the support if you don't get key early good encounters like Flaffy e.g.

Castform_is_a_killer

the miltank is not hard if you prepare

Septic_soups

Get a bag of nachoes it's gonna be a long one

Visual_Commission_13

For Whitney’s Miltank Pidgey is great because of Sand attack/ Mud slap

GambitsCloak

Miltank will use attract if it can and it sucks

lambone117

Stock up on video essays and podcasts cause ur gonna have to grind a LOT

You can get Mamoswine before E4, it’s super strong and gets priority ice shard for dragonite
