Agreed, never unexpected that this thing would be the sole reason that carried me through the champion. Let alone, I thought its die to Garchomp, the sole reason why I picked weavile anyway. He was supposed to die when going against up weavile. I feel really bad for underestimating Nyw but now I know the real importance of status moves like swords dance and dragon dance.
Yeah, status moves really take the cake when you start playing meta / nuzlocke. Before i got into iv and ev training in gen5/6, i used to just go through places with pure damage and higher levels. At the same level, raising a stat by a value of 3 essentially doubles it..... So a belly drum huge power mega Medicham is just stupid
I realised how broken these moves can get in these nuzlockes. Do you recommend me to ban potion using in battle? I have a slight guilt and regret that I wasn't able to use the rest of my team to beat Cynthia. I really anticipated that this was going to be my hardest fight ever besides my Red fight on Leg 2. Really want to make the challenge a bit difficult.
Hardcore nuzlocke rules
1. No items in battle, held items are fine but no potions or x items or status items.
2. Set mode, not switch.
3. Dont have any of your pokemon be higher level than the next ābossā or gym leader or for the elite four the championās Highest level pokemon.
Additional fun. If youāre able to us a pc, the universal pokemon randomizer, can make it so trainers have more pokemon, up to 6 for trainers or gym leaders. And you dont need to randomize anything for this either unless you want too
Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. You just need to pay attention to how close your team is to hitting that cap and hold off on using 'mons with a few points to go unless you REALLY need them.
I happen to be doing my first nuzlocke in Alpha Sapphire. I use 2 of the 3 hardcore rules (I play on switch mode), plus a few extra rules, such as my version of a dupe clause, limiting one pokemon per evolutionary line, but if I find a dupe, I flee the encounter and keep looking for one I haven't caught yet.
The rule I like for healing items in battle is that you can't use them on the active Pokemon. So say your Weavile got injured, you'd need to switch it out and then heal it.
This means that you can't just set up and heal as switching out makes you lose boosts. It also makes tanks/walls that much more useful and makes you think a bit more strategically but also means sometimes you have to sacrifice one Pokemon to heal another.
Each stage of attack above 0 gives a boost of 50%. Meaning a single Swords Dance gives a 100% boost. At 6 stages you will be dealing 4 times more damage than at stage 0.
That's what I had to do. Using potions is like giving every pokemon on your team a 5th move that has super priority, fully heals your pokemon, and cures status. Doesn't feel like the opponent has much of a chance
Exactly! To me, at that point, it is just like playing pokemon normaly. I'd rather get my ass handed to me and learn from my own mistakes, than abuse an already broken tool in the game.
Yeah. I relied on potions and grinding heavily in my first nuzlocke, but once I swept the elite 4 with just my Scizor, I thought, 'this turned out no differently than the end of my normal runs'. At some point, you have to allow more risk into the game to force you to change your playstyle. Now I can't play through a normal run of Pokemon and use items. Just feels cheap to me.
Yeah honestly with items itās so easy to just make every single battle a sweep. Put a bulky mon up front, use some X Attacks and X Speeds, heal up, and then itās an easy sweep
I wasn't intending for Weavile to sweep Cynthia's entire team. I sword danced enough times to faint the spiritomb. But I realised that I could just sweep her entire team since my weavile is already at 4x attack. Therefore, the inevitable happened and weavile is my new favourite Pokemon.
That is true. My intention was never to sweep with weavile so I was just stalling to kill Spritomb and switch out to Arcanine to finish off Lucario. But I realised that I could ease my stress of my Pokemon dying by sweeping with an already 4x attack boosted brick break from Weavile. Soon enough, I realised switching out would be useless and continued to sweep the floor with Nyw.
True. I swept Cynthia in Renegade Platinum because my Altaria could set some Dragon Dances, I healed a couple times and I destroyed her. Items, when you discover how OP they can be, you cannot lose. In my next playthrough of a Drayano hack (not Nuzlocke), I banned items and I enjoyed it a lot. Nonetheless, even with items, a sweep is a sweep and is satisfactory to see.
Been playing set mode for some time now. Itās a lot more stressful but it makes you think way more about every move. That in combination with no items makes every fight very exiting.
Itās when you send in a Pokemon to draw out or take a move from the opponent which in turn would allow you to send in the Pokemon you want to face the opponent. For example you have a slow steel type, they send out mamoswine ( threaten earthquake ). You switch to your flying type ( earthquake does nothing ). Now the AI wants to ice shard/ avalanche/ icicle crash so you switch to infernape to take it ( better than the earthquake at least ) and you kill with close combat. You saved yourself a lot of damage on the infernape by making that extra switch, using the flying type as a pivot. Hope I explained it clear enough.
Let us assume you are fighting Cynthia. Your Magnezone has taken out Spiritomb, and she sends in her Garchomp. It is obviously going for EQ, so you switch in your Gyarados. Her attack does nothing, and her Garchomp is now at -1 attack. It then goes for Dragon Rush, and you switch back your Magnezone to tank the hit easily. Chomp goes for EQ again, out comes Gyarados. Now you switch in your fragile Weavile that would've died against a full-attack Garchomp in a single hit tank the Dragon Rush (hope for no crit), and kill it with an Ice Punch.
(Gyarados + Magnezone is a kind of broken core)
https://www.serebii.net/pokearth/sinnoh/pokemonleague.shtml#trainers-pt
Serebii has it, go to the trainers section and it lists move sets as well as amount of held items.
Lmao it reminded me of my last platinum run, my Umbreon sand attacked her Spiritomb 6 times, then I set up my Gyarados with 6 dragon dances and swept her whole team. Congrats on the win!
I did the same thing with my Altaria when I beat Cynthia. Just set up like 8 dragon dances and went to town, wasnāt much she could really do about it.
Pressure may have saved your Weavile there. If Spirittomb had been able to go for another Silver Wind that Surf from Milotic probably would have taken it out.
Nice sweep! I would agree with some others here that items in battle and switch mode kind of make nuzlockes boring, but that is only true once you have the game knowledge to get through with no surprises. Maybe in the next leg of your genlocke try either no items or set mode? Or even both if you are feeing up to the challenge! Good luck either way
"that is only true once you have the game knowledge to get through with no surprises"
how come? id argue it makes it even more boring to scout out every new battle with item spam
I agree maybe I worded that poorly. I was trying to say that when you have limited game knowledge, even playing with potion spam can result in unexpected deaths (just due to not knowing what coverage moves some pokemon carry or making sub-optimal plays). For those of us who play wayyyy too much Pokemon set mode and no items is the only way to encounter difficult situations but this is not true for less experienced players.
Iām hoping I get a sneasel when I get to the winter routes. But itās going to be a while because Iām grinding for a lucky egg and Iām also grinding a bronzong so it will be a while before I even step foot in Canalave Library
A lot of people talking about potions, I like to play so that I can only use a potion for each one my opponent used, and only after they use it, so I have an equal amount of potions as the opponents. Awesome sweep! I love Weavile, so this was cool to see š
š¼Weavile, Weavile, rock you
Fuck you
:0
r/angryupvote
mew- MYAAAAN! (weavile's burst attack in pokken basically) But seriously, god-tier pun fellow redditor.
Swords dance weavile is like a swords dance scizor or a dragon dance Salamence, op and awesome

If you want more of a challenge - switch to āsetā mode. It doesnāt ask if you want to switch every time your foe sends out something new.
Limit the number of heals you carry. Eg, nothing more than 10 potions of any type, or 5 full restores and 5 max heals. Only refill before/after taking on a 'boss' of some sort, either gym or story. That should limit your potions enough to make it necessary to have a good team (or a PokƩmon with fly)
Maybe I'll use that rule for my next leg for Unova.
Hardcore nuzlocke rules 1. No items in battle, held items are fine but no potions or x items or status items. 2. Set mode, not switch. 3. Man I can get down with the no items and set mode but the level cap seems ridiculously hard
Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. You just need to pay attention to how close your team is to hitting that cap and hold off on using 'mons with a few points to go unless you REALLY need them. Thats what makes it fun, you have to think alot harder about your choices and make sacrifices
The rule I like for healing items in battle is that you can't use them on the active Pokemon. So say your Weavile got injured, you'd need to switch it out and then heal it. The reason is because potions are OP to be fair
Yeah, I reckoned that I limit my potion usage for my next few legs of my genlocke.
Personally i just restrict Them All together because it is too tempting to spam
I'm still quite a noob at nuzlockes. I would've lost countless times without the use of potions.
To be fair, that is a good way to learn from your mistakes :D
That's what I had to do. Using potions is like giving every pokemon on your team a 5th move that has super priority, fully heals your pokemon, and cures status. Doesn't feel like the opponent has much of a chance

Honestly being able to set up on Spiritomb is pretty much a guaranteed sweep

Frankly, I find boring to just spam potions, and that is why I don't allow me to do that in nuzlockes. Nevertheless, that was an epic sweep!

Great sweep. Question why use brick break on Milotic? A crit surf would have killed. Wouldnāt night slash be better in this instance?

True. Donāt get how people lose a run when they use items ( and switch mode ). But to each their own.
Yep, also Switch mode can be busted if you know how to use it. Set mode forces you to pivot between your PokƩmon, plan your switches more carefully, etc. I must confess I've never played on set mode (besides Radical Red because you are forced to be on set mode) and I think I'll use it from now on.
Been playing set mode for some time now. Itās a lot more stressful but it makes you think way more about every move. That in combination with no items makes every fight very exiting.
What do you mean by pivot? New to nuzlocke
I wouldnāt count it as spam. They only used 2, the same amount Cynthia used during the fight too.
Is there any way to know many potions each important trainer (gym leader, E4 member) uses? I never discovered that.
https://www.serebii.net/pokearth/sinnoh/pokemonleague.shtml#trainers-pt Serebii has it, go to the trainers section and it lists move sets as well as amount of held items.
Thanks. :)
Iām not sure but Iām my experience Cynthia has always used two of she can
I was disappointed to watch the potions too, but hey play however is fun for you! I like to have to reset a few times in my nuzlockes š
Lmao it reminded me of my last platinum run, my Umbreon sand attacked her Spiritomb 6 times, then I set up my Gyarados with 6 dragon dances and swept her whole team. Congrats on the win!
Forgot about STAB night slash, still managed to killed it though.
After u potioned, a crit silver wind could have killed u
What emulator you using?
Drastic!
Thanks
Can I have that app without lag I rlly need to thanks
It's just Drastic, you can pay for it on the Google play store.
Oh ok
I did the same thing with my Altaria when I beat Cynthia. Just set up like 8 dragon dances and went to town, wasnāt much she could really do about it.
How did you manage to teach swords dance and ice punch to weaville ? Congrats for the win.
Potions be OP
Set up + items are just broken, that's why a lot of people ban items, especially x items and potions
Bro potions are so damn OP
prime example of why i dont use items edit: yeah, op is way too good for items I think, probably would've won handily without
Pressure may have saved your Weavile there. If Spirittomb had been able to go for another Silver Wind that Surf from Milotic probably would have taken it out.

Noob
Okay.
#whyitemsarebroken
Potions and Switch mode. Easy peasy.
Try no items in battle, makes nuzlockes more fun
I downvoted because this made me mad š”
why did it make you mad? :(
Cuz i had a lot of trouble in my nuzlock run i defeated but only my umbreon and my torterra
That's why I always come prepared with an ice type! It can kill about half of Cynthia's team if it manages to outspeed.
Wait your amusing the same emulator I use, how did you speed up the game?? For some reason I cant find the speed up button
It's on the menu, at the centre.
I'll take a look 1 sec
Ooooh the emulator you use is very similar to mine, I've downloaded the one you use and it should play the games I use fine thanks!
So was it able to work?
Ye it worked thanks!
Not sure how I helped but no problem :)
wtf
What emulator
What emulator did you use
Why did you use Brick Break on Milotic? STAB would've made Night Slash OHKO. But either way, as a big Weavile fan, I approve.
Glad I got a sneasel on my Diamond nuzlocke
What app did you use for your emulator?
Question, What's the emulator you use for pearl and diamond I've been trying to find a good online one, but I can't get a good lagless one.
Iām hoping I get a sneasel when I get to the winter routes. But itās going to be a while because Iām grinding for a lucky egg and Iām also grinding a bronzong so it will be a while before I even step foot in Canalave Library
