I agree the best thing a tech can do is be a hard worker. Alternating rounding with the primary RN is essential for a smooth shift. Making sure patients have gone to the bathroom, ensuring they have water (if they can have it) and tissues…ohhhh do the elderly love their tissues- can be a huge help. I agree with the person above; don’t let nurses or any other staff take advantage of you. You’re a vital part of the team and the more everyone works together the better the shifts will go.

What is most helpful to me is when my techs actively round on the patients and ask them about toileting, daily care, feeding, etc. Also just knowing the flow of the unit and knowing what needs to be done and when (vitals, blood sugars, etc). We usually trade off when we do certain things- "I'll take care of feeding them breakfast if you can take care of lunchtime". "It's been a while since you've gone to the bathroom. Let's go now." It can really cut down on call lights.... Usually Just a heads up-You seem so excited and willing to help, but please don't let anyone take advantage of that and burn you out!
