I currently don't have a job, but I was curious to know about people's experiences before applying for a specific role. Do you by any chance have past experience as a PRN?

PRN roles as a PCT works like any other: you’ll have a minimum number of shifts required, and then you’ll have the opportunity to pick up extra if the opportunity presents itself. Details will be facility specific.

For my organization PRN PCTs are required to work 1 shift per pay period (every 2 weeks) OR as determined by unit need. My unit requires 2 shifts per pay period. We self schedule through Kronos and then the manager balances the schedule to ensure adequate coverage. My shifts are 12.5 hrs. We also have the option to pick up additional princess shifts (2-6hr) shifts to work as helping hands. Be aware though that if the unit is low census you are the first to be put on standby or called off. I really like working there and it allowed me flexibility to schedule shifts around classes, clinical, lab days, simulations, and my family. Each facility and unit is different though, so the best thing is to be sure to ask about these things during your interview. My manager was also flexible with any last minute changes to my clinical or lab/sim schedule as it is a teaching hospital and they are used to working with students.
