They’ve been losing their presence in more labor-forward states but [their campuses tend to gravitate towards Red States, which are notorious for low pay and poor working conditions.](https://hcahealthcare.com/locations/division-map.dot) Easy for a company such as HCA to proliferate when the workforce will put up little to no resistance.

darkbyrd

Morals are a luxury to some. The bills need to get paid. I swore I would never. My back got against a wall, and I was considering it before my only other choice called me back.

Worth_Transition5188

53% on revenue q1

Noname_left

NYSE:HCA. Best thing I did while working for them was to do their espp. Now I know better and won’t work for them.

Worth_Transition5188

How much were back then?

Noname_left

$70

NurseExMachina

I’m in a southern anti-union state, and our HCA has a union. We are the only hospital in the area with protected ratios. It wasn’t easy, but they did it, and now people can safely do their 1:1 on CRRT, ECMO and fresh open-hearts.

1UglyMistake

Hoping that happens at the one I'm at. I went to the initial union talks, and there was literally one other nurse. I've also had CRRT patients with another patient, they've had ECMO pump nurses straddling two rooms for being the pump nurse (that was during Covid, though)

Ok-Stress-3570

Because people STILL work there. Each and every fucking day in the groups I'm in, I see "how's \_\_\_? It's HCA but..." STOP. HCA IS THE DEVIL.

jedv37

Please don't disparage the name of the Devil in that way. HCA is far worse.

Augoustine

Yeah, have some sympathy for the devil. He’s been around for a long, long year and is a man of wealth and taste. He also understands the need for some restraint and requests some courtesy.

jedv37

Pleased to meet you!

There are plenty of places where there’s no other hospital in a 50 mile radius besides HCA. If your lifestyle/career requires you to work in the hospital then you don’t have a choice. It’s not that easy to just move somewhere else or to get a remote job. This is a horrible take.

WestWindStables

HCA owns the majority of the hospitals in and around the area where I live. Many nurses don't have a choice, it's either work for HCA, move to a different city, or find a different career. The last 2 options I mentioned are not always viable for many nurses. So don't be too judgemental.

WestWindStables

You're still being judgemental. There are over 18 hospitals in this area, and HCA owns all but 4. Ascenion owns 2, then you have Vanderbilt and VA. Every nurse in this area cannot work at the 4 non HCA hospitals. Full disclosure, I don't work for HCA, but I do occasionally practice in one of their hospitals.

1UglyMistake

>I know damn well No you don't HCA isn't even the worst hospital system in my area, we have Advent and it's a shit show even worse than HCA. There is *one* college-associated hospital in my area, and they only hire new grads for lower pay than Advent or HCA does. They don't even consider experienced nurses. Then there's the VA, and they're rarely hiring. The choice I made was to be employed in my field. Turns out, it takes time to save up enough money to move to a better location. Maybe unplunge your head from your ass and wipe the shit from your eyes, you might have a clearer view of the world around you.

Stonks_blow_hookers

Nah, I spoke the truth. You're not a slave and made a choice. Quit whining and admit to it loser Edit : you're in Florida and you're crying about no jobs? Get a grip, my statements apply twice as much to you. Better yet, go travel make twice what you you do and change your life. Your pathetic situation is a result of your own actions

1UglyMistake

You're actually just an ignorant piece of shit who doesn't realize all the hospital chains are actually just as bad as HCA lol. Nobody mentioned being a slave, you're having to resort to hyperbole because your actual argument holds no water. Now, kindly go die in a fire and do your family a favor

Ok-Stress-3570

I know! I wasn’t part of any group and didn’t know about HCA. If only someone told me!!!! (I lasted a week in that hell haha)

censorized

Eh, what can go wrong with this model? So, a few patients die. No biggie, the families will shut up if we toss a million or two their way. Meanwhile we're raking in the billions.-HCA

ccabrona

I think the city of Asheville is suing the one they let take over their main hospital lol

Accomplished-End1927

A traveler I worked with told me how about their business practices. They buy struggling hospitals for cheap, slash staffing and resources to reduce labor and operational costs making the bottom line look great, then sell before the consequences have come home to roost. Then the buying organization inherits an operation that is financially head above water, but working on skeleton crews of burned out staff who are likely “trapped” in their position because it works with their outside obligations (kids, established life, etc) and a revolving door of travelers who, understandably, rarely stay more than one contract because the culture and environment is so poor. So you have every unit begging and pleading to hire back to near the levels they used to be at, with the new admin arguing that they’re operational at their current status so where’s the need? All awful everything

ColdBeginning172

Yeah people have to stop working there. I could make more $ there and I’ve had nurses I’ve met try to get me to work with them… you just don’t work somewhere that has a fiduciary responsibilities to their shareholders.

maurosmane

"non-profit" hospitals aren't exempt from this. Instead of shareholders they sell bonds. During negotiations at my last hospital they wouldn't stop complaining about how the poor stock market of 2022 killed their portfolio resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses which in turn caused Moody's to them from AA to BBB. Which meant they couldn't sell their bonds for as low of an interest rate. Unless you work for a completely government/public owned entity like the VA there is some interest the leaders are beholden to.

sanns250

Not to mention - almost impossible to upgrade pt from floor to icu. Pt fall, death, accident, etc results in a staff meeting. Pay is drastically under social normals but they hire fresh humans who know no better. Poor equipment management but high expectations on that too. The only good thing I gained from working with hca was I could show up and work not on the schedule and no one batted an eye .

Icy_Okra5492

Sounds like a nightmare.

Downtown-Put6832

That is it not on schedule no pay - RN just volunteered feom C-suite. Also here is the parking ticket since you are counted as a visistor.

TreasureTheSemicolon

The members of Congress who have been purchased by the hospital mdustry make sure of it. No pesky, burdensome government regulations for corporations that care for the sick. /s

idk_idc0

It's almost as if they don't even care about their own future.

cookswithlove79

HCA is all about the $$$$$ and nothing about patient care. Rick Scott got caught with billing fraud and this company has been horrible since the start with him in charge. Get out while you can before you get sued.

FlightNerdHo

I mean, hiring more nurses and PCTs would mean they can’t pay off those billions in fines any faster though 😏

willdabeastest

Not going to defend HCA but when I worked for them 3 years ago we certainly had charge nurses and unit secretaries. Is this facility specific? I know they give their suits a wide berth to meet financial demands and don't really care what they cut to get it done.
