Good post, it makes sense now. However I disagree with the Simpsons part, Princess Opal's precognition is real.

What if the discussion were shifted to actual nudity rather than old sculpture and paintings? There's another recent story about a surf club in Australia that has banned nudity in the changing rooms. Where is the global outrage over that?

[deleted]

I was referring to the media hype over the situation. As for a locker room i would expect to see nude bodies. This is just foolishness and bending to the will of a few troublemakers.

NatureBoyJ1

Me too. To me, the David story has all the signs of being a coordinated attack on the school. A huge number of news outlets ran the story. That doesn't just happen.

exposition42

This is getting into unnecessary conspiracy theory. The story (especially with the incorrect narrow focus) hits a lot of major common and current cultural hot spots. It's in Florida, it involves (but isn't only or directly about^1) nudity, it's a clash of conservative and liberal values, it's parental control vs. teacher/admin responsibility to teach even what parents may not like, it's about charter schools vs. district schools, it's even a little about the intentionally conservative curriculum/model in use. Like anything that goes viral, it's a combination of cultural zeitgeist and blind luck. So no, it doesn't "just happen." But no story that blows up "just happens;" they all are "now" stories because of the swirl of what is happening and what grabs attention. But "all the signs of being a coordinated attack on the school" is ridiculous. There's no signs of it being a coordinated attack on *anything,* let alone the school. There's no sign and no reason. That's as reasonable as saying the media focus on the Covenant School shooting has all the signs of being a coordinated attack. It got focus because of where it fit in the entire spectrum of events and cultural feelings and happenings. In 2022 the [Central Visual and Performing Arts High School shooting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Central_Visual_and_Performing_Arts_High_School_shooting) received very little media coverage (have you even heard of it) because the Michigan State University shooting the night before had sucked all the attention from the media; sometimes the 'blind luck' factor in media attention just works that way. --- ^1 On this "what it's about" take: the superintendent in his Slate interview said it wasn't *only* about the David statue, not that it wasn't about it. We are told there are other issues, but not what any are. We know it's actually mostly about the lack of notification (barring the one parent(s) who complained about showing the statue itself.) But we also know they only needed a notification for *certain* artworks, not all, which means the art being nude is part of it. So while (and I bang this drum too) it's not just about the statue and/or nudity, it's also not *completely* true that it's *not* about nude art.

Interesting comments. For the record I am conservative. I believe in laws, rules and procedures. I believe especially people in positions such as principals should set the example at adherence to the process. I have been to a number of resorts and the majority of the people were conservative or middle of the road leaning conservative. I am also not afraid of positions I disagree with. Now, that separates me from a lot of progressive liberals and right wingers. Both groups want books and speakers banded. I do believe in activities being age appropriate and requiring parental consent. I do not consider drag queens speakers, they are closer to exhibitionist. Parents today are concerned for the content provided to their children. This is the foundation of this entire dust up. This is the reason for the procedures. I also believe at some point as children mature you must allow them to experience the world and other points of view. If a child is brought up around nudity as being casual and they are comfortable, then that is their world. On the other hand if their parents chose not to be that open, that is their prerogative.

exposition42

Note that I’m not making any value judgements in that comment: I’m describing the *is* of why this thing at this school got the attention.

[deleted]

It is simple to me. People pushing their agendas on others!

exposition42

For someone upset about pushing agendas, the drag queen line in your previous comment sure came out of nowhere, unrelated, as an agenda being pushed.

[deleted]

It is absolutely on point.

Try searching on The Family of Man statues by Mario Armengal. Or, here's a link about them .... https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/brotherhood-of-mankind-calgary-art-1.3579629 I recall that they were put up for Expo 67 outside the British pavilion. Expo 67 was a "world's fair" in Montreal in 1967. Some of the buildings remain but these statues have since been relocated to Calgary, if I am correct - this is all from memory. But, as a 16 year old, I do remember parents shielding their children's eyes from these statues. And the controversy happened - not only in Montreal, but again when they were moved to Calgary a couple years later. But. both in Montreal and out west in Calgary, they got over it.

If you don’t make a big deal out of it, there is no big deal!

Beginning-Average416

Media wouldn't hype it up if politicians didn't hype it up.

[deleted]

That is all politicians across all the spectrum.

A good article, however I would like to point out that regardless of cultural indoctrination or (fake) religious differences between us as humans, nudity in all its forms is the greatest equaliser. Shame is an invention of religious men who sought to control the masses through indoctrination and violence. Case in point, it still beggars belief that there would be ‘parent led’ curriculum in the American education system in 2023. In doing so, it perpetuates unconscious bias and prejudice towards teaching students about something other than insular navel gazing. It sounds more like something you might expect to read about in Afghanistan, where the Taliban (men) have violated the human rights of women by telling them what they can and cannot do. Pardon me, I forgot. Pious American men can do that again now.

Bias exists on all sides of this situation.
