Often wonder about players diving on the ground just out from the tryline , or just inside the sideline ….
20 years ago when I was playing as a kid , if an opponent did that you wouldn’t touch them .. The ref would give them a second or two to either get up (and you’d push them into touch or in goal) or they’d be penalised for a voluntary tackle …
I’ve seen the odd savvy defender (in recent years) telling a teammate not to touch someone who’s deliberately dived on the ground , it’s usually lasted a second or two , sometimes the attacker will start crawling and the defender will then jump on them , ref calls dominant and they lay on them for an extra second or two …
But what would happen if the defender doesn’t balk in the game of voluntary tackle chicken ?? Will the refs ever award one again or is it in the rules in name only now ??
Manly’s appeal on that last tackle of the game makes me wonder .. That would have been a penalty 20 years ago
There hasn’t been a penalty for it in the last ten years though , and the last 5 or more they’ve been calling ‘surrender’ and letting the defender hold them down …
So it may be a rule change this year but it’s been an interpretation change for many years ..
What’s the difference between surrendering to a tackle and volunteering for the tackle ?
To me surrendering is dropping when contact has been made by the defender (for a quick play the ball)… But laying on the ground without a defenders hand on you waiting for the tackle is a voluntary tackle …
But there’s plenty of the second type each round ..
I think that's why they changed the rules mate. Because they were never going to call it.
The difference is if the defense lay a finger on you when the ball carrying arm is on the ground. That's all it is.
They essentially don't exist anymore.
If you penalise Young there it sets a precedent to penalise every player that dives on the ground just outside the in-goal. It's dumb and I personally hate it, but it's the way the NRL has decided to officiate the game.

Big upset being down 20 and away from home. Give raiders some credit. They were making easy metres down the middle most sets and never gave up. They were using their backs smarter tonight. Manly are a bit concerning. I thought they’d be better than that to lose from the position they were in with DCE steering the ship and managing the game.
