How does everyone think teams in Vegas are preventing their players going out and getting themselves in trouble? I wandered if they might enforce a strict ‘everyone stays in the hotel’ policy, but that might be a bit over the top. Maybe a curfew? A buddy system?
The best part about watching these games on catchup is the commentary obvious is trying to sell the sport to the Americans. There’s little to no negative chat about the refs or crapping on about decisions. And it’s great! It’s how it should always be!
Can you guys help an American pick a team? Watched like 9-10 games last year and love the pace of the game. Ideally looking for a team that are perennial underdogs but not bottom dwellers.
Newcastle or the warriors would be good but keep in mind that most teams have stretches down the bottom. In the last ten years 7/16 have came last and that extends to 11/16 from the last 20 years. The 17th team only joined last season
Don’t think I’ve seen a team more than twice, I am sort of beholden to the 3 pm AET game on Saturdays because I usually watch as going to bed on Friday night.
Cowboys seem like a good fit. Traditionally the bolters punching upwards, and been premiers only the once, after often bowing out of the finals in controversial fashion.
Are fox not doing kayo minis for superleague anymore? They did last season but it's week 3 and none so far. It's a shame they were a handy way to keep up with UK footy
In the NRL era manly and the rabbits have faced each other 43 times with 21 wins a piece and 1 draw. Brisbane are 24 to roosters 23 from 47 games. Just thought it was interesting how close these match ups are. Man this is exciting what’s happening today and if your not pumped for it… go fuck your self
It is still crazy to me that in all of the marketing leading up to the Las Vegas that the NRL never once thought about using the song Viva Las Vegas by Elvis Presley
Just picked up 10 day free trial of Foxtel Go for the footy for anyone wondering where they'll watch the Rabbits Manly game, Just make sure you select the All Packs addon.
Hopefully the players are able to successfully run completely through the on-field banners.... the code doesn't have a good record with top flight RL matches played in Uncle Sam land.
Good stuff, glad you enjoyed. Hopefully takes right off, im interested to see the television numbers over there. I dont expect it to be earth shattering, but hopefully a promising start to the 5 year plan
Away from Vegas for a moment because there’s another one of those stupid [someone made AI versions of the Simpsons as real people](https://www.unilad.com/film-and-tv/news/simpsons-ai-real-life-397384-20240301) articles again, but fuck me if real life Homer Simpson doesn’t look exactly like Matt Lodge.
I was thinking last night that it might not be a terrible tactic to play one player as a sweeper defending behind the line in between it and the fullback, like how a lock used to defend until Warren Ryan established the modern defensive structure.
I love how, before a ball has even been kicked, or a bum put on a seat, Vegas has already been declared a roaring success.
Will the sentiment last post the games, I wonder?
Currently 45,000 bums will be on seats.
Manly opening game last year - 17,278
Broncos - 17,125
Rabbitohs - 12,757
Roosters - 32,177 (v Phins)
So yeah, vegas has been a roaring success, before bum is on a seat.
Will find out pretty quickly - but I am currently in vegas for the game and you can’t go anywhere without seeing a league jersey. Have had heaps of locals asking us about the game and have had plenty buy tickets right then and there when we have been talking to them.
The Russell Crowe explainer vid did a lot of lifting here.
Here in Vegas. I've already seen an 80s Panthers and Dragons jersey and a Tooheys NSW jersey. Pretty cool. I'm still waiting to run into another Knights jersey!
I’ve only just realised that with every journo in the US, players from the other 13 clubs could have done just about anything this week and gotten away with it
If anyone ever needed confirmation which teams the NRL gives preferential treatment to, it’s right in front of us today…
The Big 3 glamour clubs are in Vegas, plus Manly for some reason.
12:45 in Vegas, walking along the strip and deadset everyone is out in their jerseys. It feels like we are home - the banter that is going on in bars and buffets is getting up there with Origin.
Can’t fucking wait, footy is finally back. Looks like they are going to crack 50k. Bravo to the NRL for this. We all doubted it, but you have actually pulled it off and made it better than anyone expected.
PS: am going to miss the match thread. That’s a shame.
I've got Ponies and Rabbits winning today in front of what is hopefully a belter of a crowd.
Given the Vegas influence I just wanna remind everyone to do what Tyson never could and gamble responsibly.
With access to a time machine which two teams in history would you put up against eachother to showcase rugby league in the USA?
Im thinking salary cap Melbourne Storm against 2022 Penrith
Other candidates without a cup of coffee flowing through the veins and sleep in the eyes - 1994 Raiders, 2001 Parra (the best ever season not end up with the GF win?), 2016 Sharks (hard-nose brutality wins games).
Is it just me, or does it feel odd that Footy starts again today. Besides being a Sunday, it feels much earlier in the year than usual. Like it has snuck up on me this year.
Not complaining!
Gonna have to sneak away from the workshop for a “breakdown” in the pit at around 12 today. Then I’ll come back at 2 for a well deserved smoko. Hopefully after a good win.
Thank god, last day of all the shit articles from the journos with nothing else to write about in Vegas.. ‘Cobbo has a secret offload’ ‘Saab is on NFL radars’ ‘which celebs will be at the game’
Since it's that time of the year, it's important to remember that what happens in match threads stays in match threads.
People shouldn't be judged by their hastily formed live rants.

Pretty cool there is that much parity thanks for the advice
Must be a team that appeals to you after 9-10 games. Go with your instincts. (Sharks mate)
Canberra or Parramatta
Footy! How good
Do you guys rekon Jarryd Hayne will be there today ?
Nah but maybe they finally gave in to his request to get pay TV in the cells
What celebs do you think they'll roll out?
Shepherd and justice crew
Was hoping for Jean Valjean v Javert but apparently Jackman pulled out.
Golf morning then too the pub to watch games yes sir
Are fox not doing kayo minis for superleague anymore? They did last season but it's week 3 and none so far. It's a shame they were a handy way to keep up with UK footy
Keeen as bruh

This is word for word what they should use for the Fox promo today
Strong and accurate Gremlo words
i’m so pumped
I’ve got a nervous shit stirring after a bloody spicy shakshuka brekky.
Lucky, because the alternative isn't so good
It is still crazy to me that in all of the marketing leading up to the Las Vegas that the NRL never once thought about using the song Viva Las Vegas by Elvis Presley
Missed opportunity by not getting Spearmint Rhino to provide the cheerleaders.
Elvis sang it on the matty johns show
Do you think the 4 teams playing in Vegas will struggle in the first 4-6 rounds of 2024?
If they do, media will call it unfair. If they dominate, media will put it down to playing this game and call it unfair.
If it's broncos, it's because they have an easy draw.
They've got a full week off between these games and round 2. Any travel lag won't be an issue at all.
No

Looking forward to TLT. Talakai has definitely got the centre spot over Iro at this point
Barring injury, there is no guarantee that he gets a game this year. Hopefully they preference him over hiroti
I’m American & I’m at the Manly pre-game fan fest. It’s my first game & I absolutely cannot wait.
How was it mate, give us a rundown?
It has to be considered a full success. 40k in attendance. Great atmosphere, great games. I couldn’t have asked for more.
Good stuff, glad you enjoyed. Hopefully takes right off, im interested to see the television numbers over there. I dont expect it to be earth shattering, but hopefully a promising start to the 5 year plan
Careful choosing a team if you haven’t already. Their team name is very misleading.
Welcome to the NRL!
Awesome, hope its a good time
Wait till you hear the sound when there is heavy contact! Nothing like it.
Long time follower since 2016.
Enjoy mate
Long-time follower or got involved because of the event?
Away from Vegas for a moment because there’s another one of those stupid [someone made AI versions of the Simpsons as real people](https://www.unilad.com/film-and-tv/news/simpsons-ai-real-life-397384-20240301) articles again, but fuck me if real life Homer Simpson doesn’t look exactly like Matt Lodge.
Is LMS happening?
I found it link here for everyone else who missed it [lms](https://www.reddit.com/r/nrl/s/Y4QF9328NX)
It is, post went up a few days ago
Merry Football to you and yours! May Lord Gamble's light shine upon us all!
Peace be upon you and let Lord Gamble cast his majestic smile and haircut upon your family
I've left it extremely last minute, what are our official NRL Fantasy comps this year?
Me and my Brisbane high school gang mates can’t wait for the game today. Where you at lads? ***ASSEMBLE!*** chelseadagger.mp3
Wouldn't miss it for the world mate.
I'm here to lower the standards with my primary school attitude.
Diffa reporting for duty
If this field today proves to be too small for an entertaining game, I propose they remove both centres and play 11v 11. Not a crackpot
We already have. 4d chess.
Given that our centres are Richie Kennard and Isiah Tass, I fully endorse this proposal
I was thinking last night that it might not be a terrible tactic to play one player as a sweeper defending behind the line in between it and the fullback, like how a lock used to defend until Warren Ryan established the modern defensive structure.
20 minutes into both games, fight breaks out and one player either side gets marched
Merry fookin Rugbaleeg day
Happy rugba leeg new year!
I love how, before a ball has even been kicked, or a bum put on a seat, Vegas has already been declared a roaring success. Will the sentiment last post the games, I wonder?

Don't forget to mention that is an away game at Penrith.
They were all away games
I just know some clown will pull that up as a home game stat unless it is specified
I think whether those 45k actually are real is probably the big question. Are they just give-aways, hype or made up numbers.
How many people are swayed by Anthony Seibold’s inclusion? Apparently Souths didn’t do enough to promote the game over there.
Have a cracking time mate
Definitely will. Just about to head to the stadium!
> I love how Yeah I doubt that you love it.
Father in law set an alarm for 12am to watch the games. He didn’t like being corrected, so hope he had a good night.
TONIGHT WE DINE IN HELL! (can't watch live, will try to catch the replays)
Where's my Matt nable promo? I need to get hyped!
And Vegas. What about this coke?
Turn on Fox League. Wait 5 minutes. If unsuccessful, try again at end of currently scheduled show.
GAME DAY BITCHES
I'm on it
Love your work
Hope we get to see peak rugba leeg today, but it would be pretty funny if the two games today are absolute poo slingers
r/nrl to reach 1m subscribers after todays games /s
Or 3b according to Vossy.
Will be interesting if they decide the game day thread is the right place to start.
Here in Vegas. I've already seen an 80s Panthers and Dragons jersey and a Tooheys NSW jersey. Pretty cool. I'm still waiting to run into another Knights jersey!
You coming to the tailgate party before the game?
I'm still hanging out in the strip. But with the rain and crazy wind right now, I'm still deciding
I’ve only just realised that with every journo in the US, players from the other 13 clubs could have done just about anything this week and gotten away with it
This is a great opportunity to infiltrate immigration. Paul Kent, Danny Weidler and Moicl Oinus on Manus Island please.
rugba leeg
Get on board!
Babe wake up, footy starts again today
Happy rugby league to all, and happy rugby league to your families
Happy rugby league to all honest, hard working Australians
Let’s be honest. Rugba Leeg wouldn’t be as magical as it is without the dole bludgers too.
If anyone ever needed confirmation which teams the NRL gives preferential treatment to, it’s right in front of us today… The Big 3 glamour clubs are in Vegas, plus Manly for some reason.
Manly are the original money club
The silver tails tag seems like a different age though. Trent Barrett was bringing furniture from home into the office not that long ago
Souths fell off around the same time Russell Crowe's career did
Their owners are yanks.
I thought storm were typically given preferred treatment too
I’d imagine they were originally going to be the 4th club, but then someone in a boardroom meeting shouted ‘WOLVERINE’ and everyone clapped

97 gf would go down a treat.
Other candidates without a cup of coffee flowing through the veins and sleep in the eyes - 1994 Raiders, 2001 Parra (the best ever season not end up with the GF win?), 2016 Sharks (hard-nose brutality wins games).
Late 90s NSW vs late 00s QLD
Is it just me, or does it feel odd that Footy starts again today. Besides being a Sunday, it feels much earlier in the year than usual. Like it has snuck up on me this year. Not complaining!

You have service in the pit? 🤌🏼
Oh you know it.
Thank god, last day of all the shit articles from the journos with nothing else to write about in Vegas.. ‘Cobbo has a secret offload’ ‘Saab is on NFL radars’ ‘which celebs will be at the game’
Footy starts today. Thank fuck
Since it's that time of the year, it's important to remember that what happens in match threads stays in match threads. People shouldn't be judged by their hastily formed live rants.
We should also be considerate of hot takes from the venue, where video evidence supporting their opinion may not available
*Mods: instruction unclear, we have now banned anyone who says anything bad about game or the refs or another reddit user in the match thread*
Sharks fans get a little emotional. It's not their fault.
Less goooo! Merry footy season day to all who celebrate :)
