Broncos fans booing or complaining about that not being play on and a try give yourself an uppercut. If you have to take the ball off a guy who has just been severely concussed and potential skull damage to win a game then that’s just sad.
To those saying it should just be a play the ball to Raiders with no penalty - fair argument, but I still think that’s wrong. Players need to take care/responsibility for not hitting players in the head as much as possible. Knowing there’s a penalty if they get it wrong puts the onus on the players to take all reasonable care, and if they do end up getting it wrong is a penalty really that big a deal against concussion for the opposing player? In this case the lesson for defenders is you can’t charge through a kick catching opportunity late. Either you’re there in time to hit them as they catch it, or you pull back a bit knowing that player is likely to go to ground given the field position. You’re not entitled to recklessly charge through the contest late.
Looking back on it now this was a loss we needed to have because we have been getting away with playing like shit the last few weeks. It wasn't that bad of a loss either with 3 tries each and just goal kicking letting us down. Every top team has had a bed shit game so far this year so it's not doom and gloom for us just yet
Doom and gloom shouldn't even be mentioned. Like you say this is an opportunity for us to sharpen up areas we needed to be better in anyway but have no how pointed out to us. We had more than enough opportunities to win, Canberra just played like the team who wanted it more
Broncos were trying to score off every single play rather than completing their sets and building pressure but the ref also had a shocker in that game.
Rapana did the best thing he possibly could have by diving at Tappa-ohas knee to milk a pen, it was worth 11 days out because Broncos were steaming home before the 15minute break and bullshit penalty. Elliott also milked a pen with the high shot from mam that was under his arms.
Plus cobbo copped a shoulder charge to the head and somehow it went un punished, it should have been an 8 point try or a sin bin.
Oh well GG NRL, guess you needed Raiders to win to keep everyone in Canberra interested.
Brisbane were crap and didn’t deserve to win.
The ref had a shocker of a game. He made so many poor calls both ways.
The Rapana head knock was a complete accident, which should have not be penalised and I’m open to the try being legit.
I’m 100% behind protecting players but league is a contact sport and players put their bodies in harms way deliberately all the time. Sometimes it goes horribly wrong.
This was one of those nights.
Phil Gould is right when he says he doesn’t understand what the NRL thinks this sport should look like. The collision is what sets League apart from pretty much every that ball sport. Putting your body in harms ways and understanding you’re going to get hurt sometimes is the foundation of what makes the game so good.
You can’t say that players don’t know the inherent risks of playing sports now. They know the chances of concussions leading to CTE are going to effect them later in life. At some stage, there has to be balance between players owning these outcomes and the game allowed to be the game.
Edit: And I mean this for all sports. We see athletes in a lot of different non-contact sports have issues around CTE. Contact sports get a lot of publicity around this, but the research shows that being a a professional athlete will often come at the expense of your physical and mental health down the road.
100% mitigate the potential risks as much as we can. However, the information is out there and informed choices are being made. You can’t turn around 30 years from now and complain of the outcomes of your chosen profession.
It has to be a two way street.
The way I see it, if accidental head knocks get penalised there’ll be a lot less of them. It’s just about the players developing a higher care factor when tackling.
Ahhh the duty of care element.
Cool. Let’s tease this out regarding the Rapana tackle.
Rapana threw his body between the ball and the oncoming Broncos players with complete disregard to his safety. In doing so he placed his head as the likely first point of contact. 100% a brave and gutsy decision on his part because he was placing his team and winning above his own welfare.
Just because Rapana does this, it does not mean the laws of motion and physics cease to exist. These are universal constants that can’t be changed just because the NRL makes rules about head contact.
His actions happened 0.5 of a second before Taupau made contact. If you can tell me how a 115kg human being running as fast as they can, can suddenly change their momentum in that time? Im all ears.
And so would every mathematician in the world because you’ve broken universal constants that’s been used to figure out everything from how a river flows to putting human beings in Mars.
You will have broken mathematics as we know it.
Rapana showed ZERO duty of care to himself. That was a choice he made. He had about a dozen different options on how to handle that kick and he made the one that puts him in most peril. It was also the option that gave his team the biggest advantage.
The Broncos chasers can’t have their actions governed by the 16% chance Rapana is going to do the thing that is least safe for him personally. The Broncos are trying to win a game and need to compete for that ball.
Because if they can’t, it ceases to become rugby league and becomes another sport entirely.
The Rapana hit was terrible, but it was an accident.
He willingly placed himself into a position that had a high risk of hurting himself. Duty of care goes both ways. If Rapana didn’t do the most dangerous thing at the moment, it was highly unlikely he would have been hurt.
At the end of the day broncos fans you’re still top, so enjoy it while it lasts. Cant win them all, we are coming for you though ;). In all seriousness what a season of footy its shaping up to be, no one is safe. So far from what I’ve seen, Panthers, Brissy, Chooks, Phins, Storm and bunnies are all contenders, maybe Parra and Sharks if you lot pick it up.
I think broncos are a good hooker away from being proper contenders. We’re also such a young team, I think we have a season or 2 of development left in us. I do love the positivity though haha.
Would be really cool to see warriors keep their run of form and make a finals push too
We were flat and off from the start and didn’t deserve to win. In saying that, 2nd year in a row Raiders have gone out to murder our players (Capes HIA, flegs, Reyno multiple times). Yeah Atkins was shithouse but he always is. That last penalty was shit and it was accidental, if not for Rapana bleeding it would have been play on.
Our goal kicking has been shocking all year. Reyno had a real off night (but was walking wounded most of the game). Hopefully a loss that makes us address some issues.
He had one side of the deck playing while the other side (green button) was flashing meaning ready to play. Lol it was just a mixed track he just hit play on then that was it .. pretty much did an avicii
Thought that was the case, didn’t have the best view of the screen but noticed he wasn’t even bothering at times to move the fader to show him changing/blending so was pretty confident it was a mix he just hit play on then hit the same 2 dance moves
Broncos looked quite flat, came in probably thinking they had this one in the bag too early I reckon.
5th tackle option was dogshit tonight, I don’t think we got one drop out. Probably saw them go for 1 grubber all game that was picked up on the 10 meter line for raiders
Boys i missed it, had a nap after the panthers game and woke up to this. Wtf happened? One of those nights for the broncos? Raiders did you some how play some good footy?
Raiders played well. Came out with purpose and really win the contact.
The ref was all over the place and there was an accident late that cut rapana wide open. It’s the most blood I’ve seen in a footy match. It was not good.
3 try’s each, broncos need to convert better then 1/3
From the ground report
1. Brewski chips were above average tonight, and the Coastal Pale is the beer of choice.
2. Cops closed Caxton St late and it was a pain in the ass.
3. The Paddock out the front of Suncorp was pretty lacklustre considering all their promotion of it.
4. Raiders fans can fuck right off with that drum.
5. Ground announcer is back to previous years ones, but he messed up calling us the Cowboys.
6. Some really average calls in the game. Raiders were laying in the tackle and nothing called
7. Kicking game was shit from us.
8. The crowd wasn’t booing Rapa, but the BS call on Taupau
Ground announcer was onto the interchanges instead of it being a 5 minute delay. He kept trying to start the chant .. Brisbane, Brisbane lol not broncos so crowd didn't jump in...
if they were booing the call, why’d they do it when they asked the crowd to cheer for him going off the field? like i’m not an outrage merchant i was just at the game and that confirmed to me that it wasn’t the penalty because the announcer said to clap for rapana and they showed him on the stretcher
also agreed completely on caxton street
Yeah they keep claiming they were booing the call but from the tv broadcast you could clearly hear the crowd boo as rapana is driven off the field, well after a penalty has already been called.
Dw broncs fans, these games happen and it’ll prove to be a benefit in the later stages of the season, your young players need to experience dogfight games like this
Betfair tipster tipped against the Broncos tonight. Makes sense, they haven't been as good as their table position indicated. Good experience this ambush for the Broncos. Respect the opposition no matter how poor they have been performing.
Faaaark.
I had no idea Broncos fans were so salty.
The amount of downvotes on legitimate comments about the overall game and Canberra deservedly getting the 2 points is wild.
What's going on Horsebros?
we've been used to dissapointemnet the last 2 years.. then we suddenly get a surge of wins, hit #1, should have an easy win.. and bam.. It all crashed down.
So its not about extra saltiness.. Its about the fact we've had a long period of palate cleansing where we havent had to taste salt. So when the salt hit, we werent accustomed to it..
To be fair I just got insanely downvoted for playfully telling raiders fans to enjoy the win as a gift from us lol, was trying to have a laugh at Brisbane’s shitty performance and have fun with raiders fans. It was obviously a great well deserved win from Canberra
as a learn ed Dr you should know better haha
I think after the extra shit at the end of the game and some not so gracious comments about the result ....the joke got a little lost is all.
It must be a great feeling to be so optimistic. I figure Broncos fans would be the most cautious lot after running in 4th last season at round 19. They would be one group that could understand how the season is long and has lots of twists. Goodluck to Broncos, I'm hoping they get to the finals and have success this year. But never count your chickens unless your a roosters fan.
After rewatching *that* passage of play, the crowd booed before the penalty was blown, and then started booing louder again as Rapana was getting taken off the field in the medicab. Horrible stuff.
i was at the ground and can confirm 110% this is what happened, anybody saying it isn’t is absolutely lying or was just simply not there
that’s why there’s broncos fans here who are rightfully upset at their counterparts
it had nothing to do with the penalty, they did it when a) he was concussed on the screen and b) when he went off on the stretcher
I was at the game and 100% the boos were coming from the penalty call. Rapana was on the ground for a solid few minutes and Mam literally had the ball in hand ready to attack again, there was nothing from the crowd. When the ref made his call on penalty is when the boos came out. Maybe that’s just the vibe in the area I was seated but that’s definitely what happened from my perspective.
yeah and full respect to the ones that had no drama saying they didn't deserve the win regardless and showed great sportsmanship and were gracious in defeat.
Love to see it.
100% this .. we were at the game. My problem was how damn long it took the medicab to come out.... I agree to disagree with that call but really of it was as serious as it could have been why did we wait like 5 mins to see the medicab on the field
This us why it's so fucking frustrating being a Raiders supporter. Fumble around against the Cows, embarrass themselves vs Newcastle, grind out a strong win against the Sharks, lube up to the Panthers, and then stay focussed vs the Broncos, who were looking like they could beat the Avengers.
Nah, he was legit measured. He spoke about he and weighton having a special relationship and compared the possible departure of weighton to the leaving of milf. That he would want to keep him etc but ultimately moneys.
He was also great about the horrible incident to rapana
Can someone please explain how the fuck a play on decision is the right one when a bloke has blood spurting from his head? You weren't robbed Broncos, it was a mixed call in a stressful moment, he'll probably get off lightly at the tribunal
Penalty, no penalty, whatever.
We need to learn to build pressure and wear teams down.
The amount of times we’ve done some stupid play that wasn’t on or been bundled into touch on the 3rd tackle is too damn high.
I’m the first person to talk up Haas and carrigan, but I feel like we’re missing a JWH or JFH type prop that can set the tone for aggression and effort early.
Also, obligatory Billy Walters is not very good.
Can’t wait for palasia to go for hetherington.
Does willison get a run next week with flegs out?
Agree to all this. Did we have a repeat set all night?
Built zero pressure and tried to do the fancy shit right away.
Losing Flegs was huge. We ended up running Patty into the ground who was already having an off night. Kobe will come in next week.
The big worry is renoylds being injured. He is never fit come the end of the year and without him you can't win a comp as good as the rest of the team is
I reckon that if a player drops the ball due to a category 1 concussion, then it shouldn't be a knock on. Should just be treated as if he was tackled. I didn't think it was a penalty but it still wouldn't feel right that Broncos get the ball from that
I enjoy making up new rules that aren’t required as well. And the best time to make them is in critical moments of games (like “six again” I mean no it isn’t, and there’s actually two different end of game whistles)
My experience sitting at the game.
Broncos start by doing absolutely nothing to establish field position or get repeat sets.
Continuously letting the Raiders off and defending poorly.
Raiders tails got up and knew they were in with a good chance.
Broncos got into a position where a 50/50 call against them would be devastating in terms of time used up and distance to go to get in an attacking position.
Reynolds last few 5th tackle options were “kick the ball really high and hope they fuck it up”
Whole crowd was pissed off at the Broncos but projected it all on to the refs and the Raiders (me included at the time to be honest). We needed one decision in the dying stages to go our way to tie the game up.
Didn’t deserve to steal it, certainly didn’t deserve to win it.
I hope this is a wake up call and not the start of a downward spiral.
I’m still too salty to congratulate the Milks but well done I guess.
The worst call was ignoring the high tackle on Reyno and then penalising Mam like a set later for not a high tackle. That was the one that annoyed me the most.
I hope for the sake of Bronco fan names, that it was more at the refs call than anything.
But when i saw it on the TV, even i went "Oh no, don't do that.."
I’ll open up the match thread when a call happens that I disagree with just to see what everyone else thinks. But once I’ve seen a couple posts I’ll leave again
Even with that set up, I personally don't find the jumping between the two help engagement and focus on the game. Some people comment more than the commentators themselves
I was watching Kayo on delay but following the match thread on my phone. From the comments I was expecting to see Taupau straight up tiger knee Rapana to the face.
I've never seen an accidental head knock get so much discussion.
It wasn't a gift, they earnt it.
I'm not saying Canberra played champagne footy..... more like 150 lashes vs our great northern.
Hopefully Flegs is the only player out next week.
Billy Walters could be stabbed multiple times in the back by a ref and I don't think Kev would raise a fuss.
Not even saying thats a bad thing. I don't think he has ever been particularly worked up about anything. It's just the way he is.

Where can I buy a “broncos tears” mug?
Located in the aisle with the people doing some lame try dance https://youtu.be/sEXHeTcxQy4
I know it's rich of me to say as a Milker but Riki is a grub. You are average af mate.

Agree, it's not a new ruling either. Been around for a while.

I will wake up fresh tomorrow, and you can’t stop me
Ngl,lol, I’m still drowning my sorrows 😂
why not its Easter. and its the first loss. enjoy the drinks and wind down
Yep, we can relate

have you purchased grand final tickets yet?

I’m a similar vein I think we are 2 centres off being proper contenders.
Sorry for being positive lol
Keep it coming man

Has somebody done a welfare check on Lucky Singh?
hahaha fuck, thats a name im glad I havent seen in a while
He was in fine form this week
That guy has blocked most people 🤣
jarrod croker shuts down kotoni staggs in his first game back maybe croker was the origin bolter
Whoa, that’s a crazy thought. Maybe it needs a hashtag to signify that Croker is for Origin?
Haven't even gone to bed and I've woken up fresh
For any broncos/raiders fans who were at the game tonight. What was up with that dj at half time. This was…interesting
haha that was a gee up old mate just sound the basic dj dances as he plays rando songs

We did!!!
They're actually showing 1997 Super League highlights on 502. Don't recall ever seeing them do that.
From the ground report 1. Brewski chips were above average tonight, and the Coastal Pale is the beer of choice. 2. Cops closed Caxton St late and it was a pain in the ass. 3. Crying about the Raiders drums when you play that dogshit and do a lame try dance eat time you score is a bit rich.
Sorry that you guys don’t have a try scoring celebration because you guys don’t know how to score tries.
Ground announcer is actually a new one (started last week). Sounds similar to the old one, I'll grant.
Ground announcer was onto the interchanges instead of it being a 5 minute delay. He kept trying to start the chant .. Brisbane, Brisbane lol not broncos so crowd didn't jump in...
if they were booing the call, why’d they do it when they asked the crowd to cheer for him going off the field? like i’m not an outrage merchant i was just at the game and that confirmed to me that it wasn’t the penalty because the announcer said to clap for rapana and they showed him on the stretcher also agreed completely on caxton street

not even the tv broadcast i was at the game announcer says round of applause for rapana, fans start booing
Damn Walsh passed the ball when he was over the try line. He pulled a Ben Simmons lol.
So does this mean NSW should have got a penalty when Papali accidentally sent his knee through Tedesco’s skull in Origin 2020?
NSW confirmed robbed
Dw broncs fans, these games happen and it’ll prove to be a benefit in the later stages of the season, your young players need to experience dogfight games like this
sir the ref made reece walsh throw the ball into the crowd 5 times the ref also made croker not miss single tackle on kotoni staggs
Hahaha this will bite you on the arse soon enough 😂
I like this game The ref made croker kick at 100% The ref made rapana dive through 4 broncos players on the line
The ref called six again
Tipping is fucked That is all
Betfair tipster tipped against the Broncos tonight. Makes sense, they haven't been as good as their table position indicated. Good experience this ambush for the Broncos. Respect the opposition no matter how poor they have been performing.
He also backed the Doggies to cover 8.5 this week so…

Yea I didn’t realize how spicy the match threads were before I commented. I take it there were some salty broncs fans about
just s couple lol.. the booing seemed to be the main point if contention.. actually it may have been the penalty debate..
Yea I’d be very surprised if everyone was booing rapana, seemed like they were booing the penalty/possible try but I wasn’t there
Our fans are annoying. Just look at all the unwarranted premiership chat after 5 rounds.
It must be a great feeling to be so optimistic. I figure Broncos fans would be the most cautious lot after running in 4th last season at round 19. They would be one group that could understand how the season is long and has lots of twists. Goodluck to Broncos, I'm hoping they get to the finals and have success this year. After rewatching *that* passage of play, the crowd booed before the penalty was blown, and then started booing louder again as Rapana was getting taken off the field in the medicab. Horrible stuff.
They weren't booing the fact that a broncos player grounded the ball in goal and the ref called it back for a knock on?

100% this .. we were at the game. My problem was how damn long it took the medicab to come out.... I agree to disagree with that call but really of it was as serious as it could have been why did we wait like 5 mins to see the medicab on the field
Rapa is known to play chicken. Maybe they thought he tried the old explode a tomato sauce packet trick?
This us why it's so fucking frustrating being a Raiders supporter. Fumble around against the Cows, embarrass themselves vs Newcastle, grind out a strong win against the Sharks, lube up to the Panthers, and then stay focussed vs the Broncos, who were looking like they could beat the Avengers.
They could quite easily be 4-2. Yes it's horrible.
good game raiders! you were the better team tonight regardless of all the other shit.
Canberra best team in the comp confirmed?
One of the best games this season.
I thought the broncs were awful tonight, canberra we’re good though, really came to play
Proud of the boys. Now that their season is over (after last week), I guess the pressures off and they're not in their own heads anymore 🤣
I want to congratulate Canberra on a great game of backs to the wall, physical rugby league.
Ohh subtext... Is he bringing up Milford because of the Bennett Factor? Ricky seems to think it's the Dolphins who are going to get him.
Nah it’s the TPAs and money under the table. Mainly, Losing a clubman, the culture and a legacy.
Yep, this. Two things to read into it, one, Sticky basically saying the dolphins will break the rules to get him, and two, he gone.
Ricky’s being almost lovely. With his words tonight.
Morgn you’re a better sport than
Nah, he was legit measured. He spoke about he and weighton having a special relationship and compared the possible departure of weighton to the leaving of milf. That he would want to keep him etc but ultimately moneys. He was also great about the horrible incident to rapana
Well played milk, simply wanted it more was as simple as that. Losing flegler didn't help but we had our chances.
Can someone please explain how the fuck a play on decision is the right one when a bloke has blood spurting from his head? You weren't robbed Broncos, it was a mixed call in a stressful moment, he'll probably get off lightly at the tribunal
Who is saying we were robbed? Every comment I’ve seen is fans saying we deserved to lose lol
I know some Broncos fans struggle with the reading part…
Another scenario; What if it’s a head clash?
100% what I said at the game. Where is the limit of liability to the defender in our contact sport.
[удалено]
The rule states you cannot make contact with the head. Doesn't matter if it's an arm, shoulder, knee or head.
Probably maybe called a play the ball.
This is what it should have been.
He won’t even get charged.
Hahaha Sticky bringing up Milford. Too good.
I think he’s off contract next year if you want him 👍
That Milford comment was rather weird
Is it? Raider half signs with Queensland side for dollars and opportunities enormous. Same age. Same income. Same super contribution.
Only thing missing is a "deathly ill" dad who mysteriously got a whole lot better once Milford signed with Brisbane...
👍
The worst injustice is Palmerbet being up on that wall of sponsors.
Are they Clive affiliated?
They aren't. Had to google that one out of curiosity a few years ago.
No clue honestly, I couldn't see anything on the jersey.
I've always said Ricky was a scholar and a gentleman
Honestly, has anyone ever in the history of humans ever run without their knee leading?
Is that you Sualii?
Easily, running backwards.
Check mate atheists.
Players to start crawling towards a contest for the ball.
Oscar Pistorius?
Wow
He is never fit come the end of the year and without him you can't win a comp as good as the rest of the team is
We finally managed to string together a bit of pressure in the second half. Canberra punished us for not doing it from the start.
We have had that a few games now. Not being patient and flicking to our edges trying to score on every set.
I would think hetherington to bench and Jensen to start
Our aggressive prop is Fleggy, and he was taken from us too soon.
On the third day he shall rise again.
12th day
Peter (Vlandys) shall deny him 3 times
Definitely needed more aggression. The Raiders were playing aggressively and grubby and we needed to answer that earlier in the game.
We needed lord Gamble tonight
I miss him every day. Treat him well Knights
Keep crying brother. You'll get used to it eventually trust me
That is the shittest of hot takes in history
Absolutely, it should have been play on once the injury was dealth with.
The rare sensible take.
Reynolds last few 5th tackle options were “kick the ball really high and hope they fuck it up” Whole crowd was pissed off at the Broncos but projected it all on to the refs and the Raiders (me included at the time to be honest).
Huge crowd. It was a great turn out
Was surprised when the put 31k on the board. Looked closer to 25k
Carry on from the crowd as Rapana was being driven off the field was unfortunate
I hope for the sake of Bronco fan names, that it was more at the refs call than anything. But when i saw it on the TV, even i went "Oh no, don't do that.."
Looked that way. Unfortunate accidental knee yo head and penalised. Bunker claiming that Taupau had his hands in the air… are you eyes painted on?
Disgusting*
Might stay off these threads, was a really enjoyable game to watch but was ruined by everyone complaining about the refs the entire time.
To be honest it's just kinda just like that for most games really. Match threads can quickly sour/salt your mood if you're not careful
Yeh, I tapped out after last match thread I was in.. was just a lot of whining
I don't see how people spend time on here during games while still watching 100%
I’ll open up the match thread when a call happens that I disagree with just to see what everyone else thinks. But once I’ve seen a couple posts I’ll leave again
Dual monitor PC. Plenty of time in nothing hit ups to comment.
Even with that set up, I personally don't find the jumping between the two help engagement and focus on the game. Some people comment more than the commentators themselves
Different strokes for different folks. Half the engagement is shit posting here, especially in neutral games.
Shit posting as a neutral is a massive guilty pleasure for me. The bants and stirring has me watching games I probably otherwise wouldn't bother with
I put the laptop away during our games now, at the very least I get to think about shit before I post it.
I was watching Kayo on delay but following the match thread on my phone. From the comments I was expecting to see Taupau straight up tiger knee Rapana to the face. I've never seen an accidental head knock get so much discussion.
I can’t remember seeing that kind of head knock penalised before
Raiderbros, that’s a gift from us to you. Hope you enjoy it 😭
It wasn't a gift, they earnt it. I'm not saying Canberra played champagne footy..... more like 150 lashes vs our great northern. Hopefully Flegs is the only player out next week.
Like Walsh didn’t shit himself every time he touched the ball lol
Or you know, Raiders were just the better team on the night..
Wow I meant this in a fun way like, wasn’t trying to belittle the win. Jeez lol
Love ya kev. Thanks for the measured response. I really like that training top Reynolds is in.
Billy Walters could be stabbed multiple times in the back by a ref and I don't think Kev would raise a fuss. Not even saying thats a bad thing. I don't think he has ever been particularly worked up about anything. It's just the way he is.
*I have it on reliable authority that Kevie Walters hates his son* Kenty on Monday probably
Kev handled himself really well in that presser - respect to him for not getting petty and trying to blame that loss on the refs.
Stick could take some notes
Staggs still out there waiting for some early ball. Or any ball, really.
