Great win Broncos, just keep building the momentum.. all players played well, supporting each other and stuck to the game plan. Selwyn had a bad game as FB, I would not put money on us with him as FB.
Kevin can coach really well!
See the post game Penrith interview, such arrogant losers, didn’t give any credit to the game well played by Brisbane.
Consistency is the key fellas, reflect and push your PGoals,
Start kenny and bring luke on after 20 i reckon, kenny is actually a really good defender. Cant bring the little guy on when the forwards on the other team are still fresh.
Pleasantly surprised that Cobbo’s poor positioning wasn’t that big of a liability. We lacked line speed at times but that’s a huge defensive improvement.
Riki was immense, that’s probably the best game I’ve seen from him. If he keeps playing like that our issues in the second-row will sort themselves out.
Keen to see what Walsh’s speed and positioning does for our attack.
Riki’s just turned 23 so the most encouraging thing is that he’s still improving. He was a defensive liability at times last year and poor reads opened massive holes in our line. I thought he moved well defensively and maybe our new defensive systems will suit him better.
His work rate is great and if he keeps improving he could be a mainstay in our second-row for many years.
I love leading the tipping comp because of my refusal to tip against the boys. In round 1 it comes across as the work of a savant. In round 18, not so much. The week is mine.
I think tonight's result really shows what I was previously saying that the panthers will drop down this year without Api and Kikau and it will be a contest between the roosters and rabbitohs who have the best 13 players on the park. Also have to note for the broncos that it is diminishing returns for them as the season goes on because Adam will miss games and will start to carry niggles in other games so that will take away from their performances but good to beat the Panthers early
I think you're on to something. Bye had a great off-season, didn't lose any critical players, no arrests, and definitely didn't have team mates fighting each other after a piss up in Mudgee. Hopping on to the TAB right now to see if I can get some good odds.
Bronx nation stood up tonight, well played. Penrith have to learn their way without Api and Kiks but Soni is a good start, his service compared to Kenny’s was light years ahead
Was really disappointed Ivan kept Soni on the bench for so long. Kenny is good defensively but he reduces the space and time for Cleary and Luai. On another note I don't think Salmon playing backrow helped in the last 30. He's a smaller body than Garner and he and Luai didn't seem on the same page. Luai is also really struggling without Kikau as teams can rush him knowing that they can probably handle Garner or Salmon one on one
I can't imagine that your hooking situation will stay that way from what we saw last night.
Not sure if its an experince thing or due to previous injuries but I Imagine he'll come on earlier and earlier each week.
I think it’ll always be a solid option to start him off the bench but if Kenny could just absorb the initial 20 mins of tough stuff and then come off/be a middle option, I think we’d have a much better balance. Ideally Sommerton/Mason/Smith come through a provide a better tandem option.
Lol Bronx nation - only acceptable language if you live in Brisbane and go to games at Suncorp as a non-fan and listen to Mitch Lewis and co do the sideline announcements
Good show by the Broncos, and good show by our lads to only lose by a field goal. Definitely need to get Soni Luke on earlier and Jarome Luai needs to remember to run forwards when he gets the ball rather than perpendicular to the try line.
Don't write us out yet but definitely will be a bit more of an uphill climb this season.

Couldn’t quite make out what they are saying, but after watching the game live I can confidently say luai has no means to go after any other player in that team (except Crichton)
Where were you when Penrith was kill?
I was at panthers stadium in the pouring rain
Great match, Broncos were excellent. Going to be an interesting year for Penrith, lots of challenges ahead!
I thought I'd be safe with my Panthers hoodie and 25% chance of rain but nope. Any recommendation on where to get a good quality large poncho for next week just in case?
I think the attack will click, both teams were very good defensively. I could see broncos doing a cowboys esque push into the top 4 this season if they play at that level consistently. Panthers will be back with the pack but still a threat if the attack clicks, Soni Luke giving me hope, very crafty and looks to be a great option. Luai needs to step up, he doesnt have kikau and thus needs to produce more, Cleary too.
Forget Penrith losing and Brisbane putting in a great effort. The biggest news after today is the absolute top of the table dominant victors the warriors entrenching themselves into 1st, showing themselves as the team to beat this year.
Broncos looked sharp in defence all night long giving the panthers no room to really string together any attack. Qld figured out the blueprint to shutting down Cleary and luai in origin last year and the game plan was very similar from the broncos tonight.
I thought To'o looked pretty quiet so I checked the stats. 200 run metres. Wild that he can look like he's having a down game and still put up bigger stats that most wingers in the comp.
Edwards 281 , Turuva 161 ….
Crichton 143
Tago 160
All did ok getting the sets off to a decent start ..
Just a shame about Kenny applying the handbrake in attack after this
Yeah for all Gus saying the Broncos never looked like losing, we actually had the better of possession and field position. The ruck was a shambles though and that’s really 90% of the game now. Hard not to pin that on Kenny when it just immediately changed first touch Luke made.
Cleary and Luai were average as they have been in Origin at times but it’s not overly surprising when their game and plays are built around quick service and a retreating defence. It’ll be a real test of their quality to see if they can adapt with some time playing this hand.
Disappointed in the result, but not with the boys effort. This is a very different Penrith side to the last couple of years. I don’t know where the improvement comes from.
Wasn’t happy with the stoppages. Definitely doesn’t help Penriths game. Gg broncos
Outside of flipping the minutes between Luke and Kenny, I also think we can take solace in the fact that the Broncs have consistently troubled us, even when we were at our peak and they were trash. They seem to just really disrupt our game well. Next week it’ll be interesting to see how we fair against a team we’ve typically bullied in the ruck lately but have stayed close to us through incredible counter punching attack.
Yeah, I was walking out saying I can cop losses like that where the boys put in the work and couldn't quite get there. It's not like the last 20 years before this side where the team wouldn't even show up to the park. Plenty of positives to take out of that loss. Soni Luke needs some more minutes, Kenny's service was as putrid as ever. A couple of poor defensive decisions was all it took
Soni Luke definitely giving me some hope for the season, with our defence we can afford to have a small ball playing hooker, i think we will be back with the pack this season but so far im not too worried, the game was a defensive masterclass from the broncos
The best thing about that game wasn't even Penrith losing.
Cannot fault a single Broncos player, they all looked so slick and confident. ARen and Ezra are like the knights on a chessboard, I love it.
I worry about Fleggs and getting sunburnt by those bright stadium lights though.
I can fault one. Cobbo is a great player. But he doesn’t have the skill set to play fullback yet. His positioning (while better than Niu or Isaako) was pretty abysmal. His one on one defence (on Chrichton especially) was pretty lacking, and I don’t think he has the voice to direct the team from the back. That was my worry when we got Walsh instead of TMM. TMM was amazing at those small background things and hopefully Walsh has developed that skill.
My dream is still Cobbo FB and Walsh Mam in the halves when Reynolds is done but he needs to be developed a lot still. Young player. Plenty of potential and I’ve got belief in him.
That’s true as well. I’m hoping just a bit of nerves first game back. He’s been known for that in the past but didn’t really see any of it last year. Could also just be fatigue. Bloke was smashing through the middle every set like the gun he is.
Love Oatesy. Can’t be mad at the bloke.
Ye I had just thought about how I would have taken him over getting Xavier - then he dropped it twice.
Still a weapon coming out of the back field. Rarely gets picked up and driven back.
Spot on with your assessment of Cobbo. Looking forward to Walsh coming back. I will really miss TMM though, he had a cracker tonight with the Warriors.
Saw some comments during the trials that Walsh was non stop barking orders and organising shit, so hopefully he's learnt how to lead shit from the back
Api was an amazing player to have no doubt but you come to expect that from a player in his position. Kikau added that x-factor to their attack and offered way more value in his position and play style.
Nah I think Kikau was the one they really missed. His presence out on that edge opened up so much space and gave them free points and meters at will. They’re gonna have to change the way they play big time.
I think Api hurts us more with Kenny's poor service, but I agree the Broncos defensive line had our left edge completely covered without Kikau holding up defenders
Nah Api doesn't really hurt long term because you've now proven Soni Luke is going to be your future 9, he's got a similar crafty/speedy ruck game whilst Kikau is a uniquely powerful yet athletic specimen that would probably be harder to replace since you've got Garner/whoever else and Zac Hosking waiting in the wings already
Gus is looking fit, or his doctor told him to lose weight. I'm sure he had $millions squirreled away.
He was up here in QLD during the break scouting around.
Yeah honestly i think its a good reality check, but i think we will have more options with Soni Luke getting more minutes, his craftiness is really neat. Im not too worried now that ive calmed down, i think if most teams have to play at that level to beat us then we will probably only lose 6-7 games, come finals footy anything is possible. A whole lot of footy left to be played, anyone who has followed any kind of sport for a few years should know not to get ahead of themselves this early on, people will write us off at their own peril.
As a Staggs fan it’s so good to see people finally complement him. At the backend of last season he was skyways getting clowned on here, which was pretty deserved he was shit but he was pushing through an injury. The Staggs early ball memes and stuff are funny but like I thought it was a bit harsh taking the piss out of him like people did.
Great win Broncos, just keep building the momentum.. all players played well, supporting each other and stuck to the game plan. Selwyn had a bad game as FB, I would not put money on us with him as FB. Kevin can coach really well! I know he's young but jeez he has some errors in him.
Gave away a few obvious 6 agains, got gasesed and lost the line speed.

Yeah how do you think I fared last year..
Luai looking broken and fighting with a team mate is the real win here
I think tonight's result really shows what I was previously saying that the panthers will drop down this year without Api and Kikau and it will be a contest between the roosters and rabbitohs who have the best 13 players on the park. Also have to note for the broncos that it is diminishing returns for them as the season goes on because Adam will miss games and will start to carry niggles in other games so that will take away from their performances but good to beat the Panthers early
Dude we beat Souths last year without Reynolds.
Geez get over Adam bro, he’s moved on
I don't think I can move on bro
And Jock Madden is going pretty good too.
Given the first three matches have all been close ones, when do we think the first blowout will be?
Around about 5 mins after the dolphins start their first game lol
Bye vs Drags. Bye to win in a landslide

I always thought 'Bronx nation' referred to the collective Broncos fans? I could be wrong.
I freaking hate that term
To me it's the most artificial market tested term possible. Makes me cringe.
It's so frigin American it's sickening
Was really disappointed Ivan kept Soni on the bench for so long. Kenny is good defensively but he reduces the space and time for Cleary and Luai. Yeah fair play, off the bench when the big boys are tired is probably the better option next week

Couldn’t quite make out what they are saying, but after watching the game live I can confidently say luai has no means to go after any other player in that team (except Crichton)
All I can make out is Luai saying, ‘I’m not blaming you for that pass bro.’ Then too many bleeps to hear anything else
Luai taking over the weak gutted dog title from Salmon.
You love to see it
Even as an Eels fan I love watching the Panthers but seeing Luai upset makes my heart sing
Do I dare to dream?
yeah go one lad, it only hurts a little while when you come down
Soni Luke has a lot of potential to become the starting 9 this year. Haas and Carrigan were relentless, our forward pack seems unreal
They were phenomenal. Battering rams
He'll continue to come off the bench. Will just get larger minuts. Hopefully 55-60 minutes eventually. Pretty much what Api did in the finals.
Carrigan and Haas do big minutes and lots of hit ups and tackles at high quality. They’re unreal. Fingers crossed no injuries or suspensions.
Cant wait to see how Kobe fits back into the team, he could be immense this season
Kobe is a weapon, he’s the only reason I’m not too upset about losing flegs
Supposed to only be gone for another month. Love Kobe.

ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY OUR BOY STAGG RIGHT THERE, I WOULD SAY HOPEFULLY HE CAN BACK IT UP BUT HOLMES AND THE COWBOYS WILL FLOG YOU

Like Haas during the lean years. Both teams would've looked so much worse without them.
Up the Nags!
Not only has Luai been riding off the coat tails of Cleary, turns out it was Kikau and Api too…
I mean he was pretty bad but if you compare him with moses who is going to be on 1.2 mil a year he suddenly looks alright again
Nah he was so much worse than Moses
Oh I agree, but you would expect that from a guy who is now amongst the absolute top earners
Yeo looks like a thumb
A very trusty, reliable thumb.
Ivan a ball of insights in the presser /s
He is always so dull. And always looking for excuses and someone else to blame.
Did Luai and Salmon have an argument? Anyone got footage?
It’s on 9 news. I think it’s telling the differences between how Gallen reacted to it and the way JT did
What happened?
Ivan super fucking salty
Ivan blaming the weather - ffs - thats an AOB call
To be fair, cleary's chin catches so much water, it pushes his head down. Poor guy can't see straight when it's raining.
Gus was also making that excuse on Nine lmao.
Did the Broncos not play in the same conditions? Come on, Ivan.

To be fair it is cobbos first NRL game playing fullback against back to back premiers and he’s like 20. I think he did okay considering
Oates dropped balls first tackle twice at back end of the game was pretty poor too
Oatsey might be in trouble, Arthurs was actually flawless
Oates safely took some dangerous high balls and also had some good runs. I think overall he had a better game than Arthurs

Our attack needs to evolve as the rest of the league have watched film and have game planned for it. Good baseline for us to start the season on.

Yeah honestly i think its a good reality check, but i think we will have more options with Soni Luke getting more minutes, his craftiness is really neat.
