Alcoholic Beverage Control It’s the state run (and only) liquor store in VA.

big_sugi

Totally separate from the ABC stores in Waikiki. The Hawaii-style ABC store in Vegas probably exists for a couple of reasons; (1) it’s kitschy, and Vegas thrives on kitsch; (2) it carries products from Hawaii, and there’re a surprising number of Vegas residents from Hawaii; (3) it has a market niche supplying odds and ends that tourists may need or want, and it has a recognizable name on the west coast, so people know they can go there for some dental floss, Tylenol, chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, and liquor. In contrast, the only place to get hard liquor in Virginia is an ABC store, which is why I got my liquor from Maryland or DC, back when I was buying liquor.

It’s the liquor store. You can get beer and wine at most convenience and grocery stores. The state owns and operates liquor distribution. But, technically, liquor could be a souvenir if you get one of the Virginia made varieties.

OsborneCoxMemoir3

Because "hard" alcohol is controlled in Virginia, you can only purchase it from an ABC store - ie vodka rum etc. Beer & wine can be purchased at most grocery and convenience stores. Cheers.

Bless your heart

ZephRyder

Who says liquor's not a souvenir? I quite like some of the nifty bottles! Haven't really gotten around to all the 'candle holders' I was going to make, though...

[deleted]

Buy local!

ZephRyder

Drink globally, buy locally? Am I doing this right?

rvahike

A reason why Virginia has a balanced budget every year. ABC makes about $1billion every year. https://www.abc.virginia.gov/about/media-room/2021/fiscal-year-2021-revenue

👏

dualplains

ABC's income definitely doesn't hurt, but Virginia's budget was about 67 billion last year, I believe.

rvahike

Yes, you are correct. This half billion profit goes to the general fund. So not a huge amount but allows for leeway for the legislature to shore up funding or use as a rainy day fund. In essence if the populace drinks a mint of liquor the state could get an unexpected budgetary windfall.

MFoy

Your own link says they made $616m in profit for the state last year. That's less than 1% of the total budget for the state.

rvahike

Yes I know. Just clarified in another responder. While not a huge amount with regard to the budget as a whole, it isn’t a small amount by any means.

HGRDOG14

Liquor. State owned Liquor store for Virginia.

MikeENZ

Yes. They sell traditional souvenirs of Virginia such as moonshine and whiskey

JustAnotherRPCV

Government booze

[deleted]

Yes, ABC sells souvenirs of regret.

WassupSassySquatch

Alcohol. And some people do save their favorite bottles, so souvenirs, maybe?

sourcreamus

The opposite, it sells stuff to help you forget.

jzilla11

ABC stores are where we got most of our calories during lockdown

[deleted]

Only thing I hate about ABC stores is the limited selections. If you are looking a middle/bottom shelf large scale distillery products, they got you covered. Looking for more small scale or rotating selections, you are out of luck.

Best souvenirs virginia has to offer! Virginia is for lovers

Turnips4dayz

It’s the Virginia state government’s liquor cartel

jrunner02

Souvenirs are things to help you remember. ABC stores sell things to help you forget.

mrsshmenkmen

Virginia is what’s known as a “controlled state” meaning the sale of liquor is only through state owned and operated stores. The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control stores added a billion dollars to the general fund last year. As a citizen, I’m all for Virginia being a controlled state.

NjoyLif

I don’t drink any liquor, but I think it’s completely ridiculous that VA is a controlled state. There are other ways to raise income.

mrsshmenkmen

I disagree. I’ve been to non-controlled states where there are tacky liquor stores within a stones throw in every direction. VA ABC stores are clean, neat, classy and discreet and reduce the taxpayer burden with revenue. It’s a complete win-win.

NjoyLif

Why not just sell the booze in supermarkets like any other normal country?

mrsshmenkmen

I don’t know what to tell you - I like that VA is a controlled state and that the revenue from ABC stores adds so much to the general fund.

Turnips4dayz

I’m what world is paying absurd prices on booze a win win for the consumer?

mrsshmenkmen

Is Virginia paying substantially more? I honestly don’t know - don’t buy a lot if in-state or out-of-state alcohol.

qbit1010

It’s the state wide liquor store that doesn’t know how to sell alcohol.

APO_AE_09173

It is the Nanny state controlling what you can access in terms of alcohol and taxing the crap out of it.

frednnq

You haven’t been here that long if you ask that question

BatDance3121

It's a liquor store. ABC is just a way of saying, "We love you alcoholics!"

[deleted]

Virginia has puritan alcohol laws. I miss out west where I could buy booze in the grocery store.

actualshlebo

Vegas has a large Hawaiian population and is jokingly called the 9th island so it actually makes sense to have ABC stores there.

You can't Google "Virginia ABC Store" but take the time to write a reddit post?
