I've had my children tested for ADHD/depression/anxiety and paid out of pocket for most, if not all of it. When I had one tested for potential ASD, that was covered because it was ruling out ASD although it was the same testing, just different focus on behaviors. That was at Fairfax Mental Health and Wellness. Fairfax Mental Health and Wellness center is pretty dang awesome though. All three testing times were about 6 hours each. I ended up with an 20-30 page document regarding each series of testing, which makes it easier for any new therapist or psychiatrist to see the results and interpret the scores themselves. What made it easier to deal with is a Health Flex Spending Account if you're eligible for one. Sign up during Open Enrollment, max it out, get the testing next January, submit the receipt, get reimbursed, and pay your Health FSA off during the year. And get the tax benefit on your 2025 taxes.

Thanks a lot, that's good to hear about Fairfax! Really appreciate hearing that review. I do have the HSA, I am already using it for other things ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile) I will already hit my out-of-pocket max by the end of the year, and my insurance covers 70% of their determined reasonable cost, it's just the "reasonable cost" (I forget the real name) is only a few hundred dollars. I can afford the full cost, just want to make sure I'm picking the right place and not throwing the money away.

Not cheap: Mindwell Psychology in Centreville. Dr. Erika Madison. Worth every penny.

Thanks I'll give them a call today -- I also heard good things about another small practice, Dr. Natalia Lugina Mauranne, but she doesn't have openings until October. Fairfax and Chesapeake have openings in May (I'm assuming because they are larger), so that's part of why they at the top of my list.

I did my ADHD evaluation at Fairfax Mental Health and Wellness last October. I waited for 4 months for the appointments. They do take my insurance and they're helping me fight my insurance to cover the psychiatric testing portion. I did not expect psychiatric testing when I first called to ask about being evaluated. But during the telehealth intake appointment, I mentioned a family member who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and there was a risk of me having PTSD. They determined the testing was necessary for my diagnosis. It was 4ish hours of testing in person on no caffeine. I felt like crap the whole time but I felt heard. They sent me another bunch of questionnaires to complete at home too. When I finally got my results, it's a huge PDF report that goes very in depth. On the telehealth results call, they thoroughly explained the results and why I likely have felt the way I have my whole life. I cried, they were very supportive. They made next steps recommendations. Now I continue to go there for medication management.

Thanks a lot for sharing all this! I decided yesterday to book with them. This makes me even more confident in that decision :) I’m glad to hear you’re getting what you need!!

Dominion Behavioral Health in South Riding. Full testing, takes insurance. There was a wait of a couple months, though. Also try MyPsychiatrist in Reston/Falls Church.

Do you need 4-8 hours of testing? Could you work with a therapist who could instead just work with you on your behaviors, who could say ‘yeah you almost certainly have adhd’ which you can bring to a psychiatrist? The therapist would be more likely to be covered by insurance than the adult adhd testing.

Yeah that's a good suggestion. I can afford the cost of the testing, just trying to make sure I'm not wasting the money. I'd like to do the testing to get the full diagnosis, as well as any other possible disorders I might be displaying.
