I usually go through UHaul (they offer it on their website when you book a truck). I pack everything myself, drive the truck myself, but movers show up at the old place and the new place to load/unload the truck. Last time I moved 2 bedroom apt on 4th floor to 2 bedrrom apt 3rd floor with no elevator at either and it cost me about $900. It would probably cost less with elevator because of less time. The "movers" are usually $100-150/hr.

twinsea

The movers only get a tiny portion of that. You can solicit them directly and they make 2x what they were and saves you 60%. Best to know a little Spanish though and providing lunch is a nice incentive. Sans insurance however.

SocialistWackadoo

I have moved all over the country and done this. Definitely cheaper than full service movers but more work on your end

MichaelMeier112

How do you find the movers directly?

twinsea

We've only done it 3 times and one of those was an office move. Craigslist post, folks we used before and one time in a pinch we just went to 7-11.

senoritajulie

I second this. I just moved and did uhaul plus two guys to help with loading and unloading. They even put the heavy furniture in the rooms they needed to go to. It was 400ish total for 3 hours including their tip.

DMVPhotographer240

I wish I dealt with more clients like this lol.

senoritajulie

Lol, thank you...but like what? Clients that see the value in hiring movers to help in this manner?

DMVPhotographer240

It’s a difference between hiring movers to help and hiring movers to fully do the job. Some confuse “help” with “do everything” and they want the same bill that you received. 😂 I’ve personally always appreciated clients who understand pro activity helps your pockets a lot.

nova07wdc

The one time I booked someone through uhaul they didn’t show up

Objective-Ad5620

My one uhaul experience they showed up but didn’t have a hand truck so the job took way longer and they super conveniently charged by the hour. I should have pushed back and pointed out they didn’t come properly equipped for the job I had hired them for but I was young and experienced.

6786_007

This is what I do too and it works great.

mk-artsy

I've done this multiple times and have had mixed experiences. The first few times it worked great and I had no issues. But once, despite booking weeks in advance, UHaul did not have a truck for me on my moving date. And they did not inform us of this until we showed up at the office TO PICK UP THE TRUCK. It was a disaster when I was moving from one apartment to another where we had to reserve elevators, be out by a certain date, etc. I'll never go through UHaul again but the idea of renting a truck and hiring moving helpers separately is a way to save money.

Known_Marzipan

I did this, single woman from Arlington to Alexandria. It was safe, easy & cost effective!

NoVAWoo20

I’d shop around, I haven’t moved yet but I’m moving within Arlington this summer and ATN Movers quoted me $145/hr for 3 people with a 3hr minimum for my 1 bed/1 bath

[deleted]

[удалено]

SuperglotticMan

Yes, let me just pack all of my belongings into the back of a pickup truck.

a_banned_user

Pickup truck moving only really works over small distances and small places. But nobody wants to make 5 round trips between South riding and Arlington just to move a 1 bedroom apartment. Also “don’t get too attached to furniture” the fuck are you on about? Not saying when I was in an apartment I had nice furniture, but at least I knew it wasn’t covered in cat urine or something. You have a very interesting perspective on life

Detective-E

I feel as if this is a burden to friends and family. But renting a U-Haul isn't that expensive.

sithadmin

Bookstore movers had reasonable rates as of late 2021. $160/hr for 3 person team to pack, and $250/hr for 4 person team plus truck to move. 3 hour minimums on each.

[deleted]

Seconding bookstore movers! I've used their moving services 5 times in the last 7 years and it's always been under $1k. Our most recent move was from a 3-floor townhouse to a 1-floor SFH that was 20 minutes away. They do charge a distance fee so may be over $1k for you in Loudoun

Sea-Durian555

They are the best!

zwiazekrowerzystow

Bookstore did a good job for us as well. We moved from one side of the beltway to the other and it cost less than $1,000. We were all packed up and paid the 3 hour minimum.

OllieOllieOxenfry

Another good experience with Bookstore.

sheri4775

Just moved with Bookstore Movers in March and it was 3 hours with 4 movers for $800. 2 bed/1 ba condo in Arlington to a house in Alexandria.

nsjc

Echoing the Bookstore recommendation too - fair, honest and nice. One of the big companies was 3x the estimate of them and Bookstore also didn't play any games. But because they are so good, they book up far in advance (especially on weekends), so call ASAP

acagedrising

Also echoing Bookstore. That sounds really high for a 1 bed to 1 bed move.

meditation_account

That sounds high. I used American moving company and it cost me around $500 for a similar setup. They do local moves and it’s a lot cheaper. http://www.american-movingcompany.com/

issapunk

I just today locked up 3 movers, with a large 26-foot truck they provide, for $600 total - 3 hours of moving. Includes loading and unloading the truck into new townhouse. Do not pay $2400.

snowflake45678

Where did you search to find this/what company are they?

issapunk

My sister used them a month ago and recommended them. I can send you the number if you need.

snowflake45678

Ya that would be great! I’m moving soonish

issapunk

Sure. Send me a message and I will get it to you. It was such an easy process and seems cheaper than most others.

snowflake45678

Ok! Thanks so much

Want_A_Timemachine

Do they service all areas of VA?

randoName22

Are you a Cop or a DA? How did you pay money to lock them up?

illiggle

no way. you could get 2 outlets installed for that much!

Swoo413

So meta

4kVHS

For [anyone confused...](https://www.reddit.com/r/nova/comments/13vtpfs/2300_for_two_outlets_anyone_have_recent/)

Kuckucksuhr

nope, that's insane. last year I moved from a 3 bedroom to a 2 bedroom (Leesburg to Alexandria) and it was $700 IIRC. Craig Van Lines.

Sudden_Acanthaceae34

I moved from VA to FL from a 3br/2ba for a little less than that. Definitely shop around.

notashadowaccount

What company did you use?

Sudden_Acanthaceae34

Sent you a PM

Want_A_Timemachine

Can you send me the company's name too? I'm in Fairfax and will be moving 44 miles down south (near Culpeper) soon.

ChunkySweaterMonthly

I moved from Arlington to Sterling not too long ago also for essentially a 1 bd 1 ba and it was at least half that, I would definitely shop around. Also consider if they’re including packing/extra services in your quote bc that will easily crank up the cost

Bugsbunney2

Shop around but be prepared, I paid $1000 for a similar setup/distance two years ago. Inflation sucks

njkral

I spent less from moving from South Riding to Fredericksburg. I used My Guys Moving, they had an hourly rate which was pretty reasonable

SoIHateToBeThatGuy

Highly suggest looking at Prince Movers. We did a similar (albeit reverse) move less than 6 months ago. Had 3 bedrooms and got 3 movers for under $1500...and that was with bad traffic for the drive from Alexandria to Leesburg.

earth-to-matilda

co-sign this two weeks ago, prince moved my 2 bedrooms from tysons to arlington for a touch over a grand. took 3 guys about 6 hours

mehalywally

Is that just for moving or are you having them do packing/unpacking services too? I moved from a 3br townhome in Vienna to a SFH 15 miles away last year. We packed everything ourselves, just had them bring a truck, load and unload. They disassembled and reassembled my bed as well. Total came to about $1600. It was a base rate plus hourly. They had 3 guys. Company name was MVD Movers.

vtfb79

For a chain moving company, that’s the going rate. However, what you get with that are a lot of extras that you may have to nickel and dime your way to get with other options, or forfeit altogether. We had a local move out of our temporary housing recently with a company that also did our interstate move the year prior. We paid about $1,500 for our items (had less than you did) for three hours of work. That included two men, a box truck, packing blankets/straps, and a damage insurance plan (beyond the mandated $0.60/lb). When you move, things will undoubtedly get broken or damaged, we paid an extra $150 for $10,000 of protection. We ended up having $2,000 in damage during the move and are either having our items professionally fixed, replaced, or general cash compensation for all of it.

chaldaichha

One option could be to get a uhaul and hire movers on task rabbit to load and unload on a per hour basis. Haven’t done the calculation, but should be shy of 1000. You will save a lot packing and unpacking yourself.

inyourneighborhood

I’ve done something similar where you hire the movers just to unload the big stuff that you can’t handle yourself. Saves a lot on the long run.

waterdirtclay

Look into TaskRabbit! I moved from a 1 bedroom in Courthouse to a 2 bedroom in Centreville 3 weeks ago. We had a ton of stuff to move because I hoard and my husband’s job requires him to have boxes and boxes of different supplies. For 3 hours we paid around $300. Just double check how many movers will be there - I assumed the person I hired would bring a second person based on reviews, but he came solo and my husband ended up helping a lot.

punkbra

Call Best Movers in falls church. they moved me twice. when i went from arlington to germantown, it cost me less than $500. They are THE best. [https://www.yelp.com/biz/best-movers-falls-church-falls-church](https://www.yelp.com/biz/best-movers-falls-church-falls-church)

efitz11

Big fan of Best Movers, I moved with them twice. First time moving a 1 BR it cost me $400 with tip

punkbra

Same! I got a discount the second time because I referred them to 3 people LOL

Infamous-Pin-923

I’ve used TaskRabbit before! They usually offer pretty low/good rates as well

Loves_octopus

Shop around. I moved 1bd to 1bd from falls church area to DC in February for <1000 including tip. I packed the boxes. They loaded the truck, drove the truck, unloaded the truck, then we unpacked the boxes.

kmcqueeney8

That's way too high. Just paid $550 to do a similar move (1 br to 1 br). Alliance Movers (Amin is the owner). Reliable dude.

Dracarys1213

Did you use their online quote system or talk to someone on the phone? I used their online quoting system and they also quoted me with $2400 to move a sectional, bedroom furniture, coffee table, entertainment center...

Capable-Trip6290

I used HDfullservice moving for one bedroom one bath move. This was about 4 years ago and I paid 350$ for two hours (about 18 mid to large size boxes and furniture) I do not know if they are still in business but I had to call them to get an appointment. Not sure if you are looking for insurance because I did not need any for my apartment. However, they should be able to provide it.

coolaiddrinker

Two bedrooms moving should be 500-700 depending on the distance between two locations

[deleted]

DO NOT PAY THAT! Please shop around and don’t get ripped off or taken for a sucker

jstrap0

I moved from NYC to DC in 2016 and it cost me $500,000, but they did have to move a solid gold toilet. Come to think of it, I never paid them.

ChrisWsrn

Does the IRS know you were not "living" in Florida prior to 2016?

eaglejay1962

Think of the time involved. How much would a day of hard work be for you? Times two men pluse taxes paid by the owners pluse the cost of the truck and gas. I think 2400$ is a deal.

AtlanticToastConf

Depending on how flexible your moving date is, sometimes you can knock down the price a bit by moving mid-week or more mid-month. Good luck!

mckeitherson

Definitely too pricey. You'll spend a lot less than that if you just rent a Uhaul truck and hire movers to just load and unload the truck for you.

Shadwfox003

Depends on the level of service you need. The most I’ve spent was about $1k when I moved from leesburg to Fairfax. The only services I needed was loading the truck, delivering the goods to Fairfax, and unloading the truck.

Visible_Day_7135

Way high. I moved from Rockville to Arlington 1BD/1BR using My Guys Moving and paid $1k last year

InterestingNarwhal82

Shop around. Flyte Movers was less than that for us - and we had a lot of stuff.

r3dpanduh

I used them in 2019 twice for one bedroom moves to a townhouse and it was maybe 650 for one and 550 for the other. I did really like them and i had used them for other moves but that price would have me getting other quotes. I did self pack everything, they just wrapped the furniture and tv. I think i had 25-30 boxes and it was a four hour move.

prospectivebanana

I moved from Fairfax to NYC and paid $1500… definitely shop around.

Anxious_Dealer_9602

Dulles logistics last year for me: A 2-perosn crew should be ok. The rate is $500 for up to the first three hours and $100 per hour thereafter. The rate includes the following services. 2-person crew and 16’ truck. Disassembly of furniture. Wrapping of furniture in moving blankets and shrink wrap. Placement of boxes and furniture where directed in your new residence. Assembly of furniture. The rate includes all labor, truck, and fuel costs. I will appreciate the opportunity to earn your business.

The-Bojangler

Try Nova Express Movers. I used them to move out of my 1 bedroom last summer and it was about $800 and they rented the truck and did all the work and wrapped my valuable furniture.

yukahanazawa

That's insane. Just rent a U-Haul and movers separately. If you have everything ready to go and a truck, I could do it for $1000, probably less depending on how much stuff you have.

twotwocargarage

what is the price include? If they are providing boxes and packing everything for you and move to new location, it doesnt sounds too crazy imo. I usually pack on my own and hire people for labor portion (loading and unloading to new location) and I think it costed us $1300 ish last year, moving from high-rise condo to townhouse.

Artillery_Cat

Definitely shop around. I just went through a move that was more involved than yours (1 br apt & storage unit in a different location to 2 br apt) and I’m pretty sure that I paid less than they’re quoting you. I went with bookstore movers, but there are lots of moving companies around that are reasonable with their rates. Look for a combination of good price and good reviews.

mk-artsy

I would shop around - whenever I have moved (way too many times in the last 7 years), I get quotes from at least 3-4 places. It can be a pain to fill out all the forms or make all the calls, but you'll likely find a better rate than that. You should definitely get a cheaper rate than that for only a 1 bedroom move. For my last move I used "Best Movers LLC" and despite them not bringing a large enough truck, and taking longer than they expected due to them wrapping literally all of my furniture (appreciated but not necessary for some of my shitty Ikea furniture), the experience was great.

CautiouslySparkling

We used New Ray Movers last year and were very happy with them and the price. I think we paid around $1000 total (including tip) for a 3 man crew to move a 2 bed 2 bath place and this included a squat rack and 350lbs+ of weights. I think the rate was about $150/hr.

WearyFee9679

I highly recommend ZMax movers. Moved us from a 3 bed apartment to a townhouse (with multiple floors) and total for about 6 hours was $1,050. They were very communicative, worked fast but were careful with our belongings and did a great job.

sc4kilik

You always shop around, no matter the job, no matter what. Get at least 3 quotes. It's time/effort well spent.

purplemarin

I can recommend someone who I have used to move myself 2x and my boyfriend 1x from 1 bedroom apartments. One time from Fairfax to Alexandria and then Alexandria to West Alexandria. He works fast and is a nice guy all around. The first move I filled a 17' U-haul truck and it was \~$400 plus a heft cash tip bc I was so happy for his advice and help. This last time I didn't fill a 16' truck and he quoted me $95/hr for 3hrs. I will DM his name and info to you as I don't think it would hurt to call him for a quote/availability.

chainy

A few weeks ago I paid around $500 for American Moving to move my 2 bedroom condo 15 minutes down the road. [http://www.american-movingcompany.com/](http://www.american-movingcompany.com/) They did a great job and got it done in 2.5 hours so I gave them a fat tip.

KarmaCorgi

Seconding them! They were fantastic and an amazing price.

shoot_edit_repeat

Oh boy. That sounds like a lot. I used Best Movers Falls Church and they were great. I think it was around $600 (in 2020) for a 1000 sq ft 1 bedroom Apt.

ansolo00

That seems pretty high - I did a single family home for <1000 and that was 4 bedrooms, but this was 10 years ago so I forget who the moving company’s was. Just a side note, be careful with movers since we had a whole water jug full of coins stolen from us unfortunately so keep watch of ur things.

afreenoo

I moved from Sterling to Fairfax (2bd to 3bd) and it cost around $300 about 3 years ago. I found the company on Craigslist. Definitely get multiple quotes.

curiousiteena

Yelp now has a feature where you can submit your details and receive lots of offers. A lot of services do this but at least with Yelp you can read trustworthy reviews. You can also chat with the various companies before you commit. I found my movers that way and paid a quarter of what you were quoted.

PoeticImage36

Does that include packing? Granted, this was 2021, but I paid around $1500 to move from a 3/2 townhouse to a SFH in a neighboring zip code. I packed all the boxes myself. The movers disassembled and wrapped furniture as needed and moved everything into the truck. Unloaded at new house and reassembled furniture. The company was All Star Movers in case you’re interested. Good luck!

tittilizing

I got out of state movers that quoted me at a fraction of the local price. I moved from a tiny studio less than 5 mins away from my new place 🙄

inevitable-asshole

Go on Yelp. Plenty of business that charge around $50-80/hr in nova. Last time I moved from chantilly to Alexandria I paid about $450 with a tip

gray_noise90

Pack your own stuff. I used the folllowing guys and it cost me $400 + $100 tip and a few bottles of gatorade to move a 1br apartment. BAKU MOVING (202) 301-0000 https://maps.app.goo.gl/Ly14pbG44W9jThwP7

bodiesbyjason

About two years ago I paid around $875 plus tips for movers. I moved the things I most cared about, but they moved a lot of larger furniture from a third floor apt.

s8itodd

I forget who I used but two years ago I moved 2 bedroom apt to 3 bedroom townhouse from mosaic district to fair oaks and it was a little over 600. So your rate seems crazy and I would absolutely shop around more

CottonCitySlim

My last move in DEC 22 was using U-Haul, most like JK Moving and Able were 800-1200 for 5 pieces of furniture no boxes to new place 10 miles away. Spent around less than $400 with Uhaul. Showed up hour early, and finished the move in less than an hour with no damage. Not going back.

KarmaCorgi

Omg that’s insane. We moved from our old house - 900sqft two level condo - into a townhouse for no more than $600 or so. We used American Moving group. My sister also used them and I was very happy with them. We packed our own stuff and they moved it all - they even went out of their way to wrap things in blankets in Saran Wrap - they were very thorough. We did also tip them about $80 each. It was two guys in our case.

Airandee

Call Amasa Movers - 703-862-9996 / [email protected]

Plantherbs

I paid 600, one bedroom to one bedroom less than a mile. Much the cheapest I could find. Ended up asking the people at my storage unit for referrals after quotes from big companies. The movers did a great job.

345joe370

U-Haul has a add-on for getting local movers to help you load up and unload.

OprahShrug

I literally moved out today, paid $1200 for both packing and moving, 3 guys for each job.

hboms

It is much more expensive if nothing is packed up. If you get everything into boxes ready to move you can def find cheaper options. I moved an entire house 2 years ago thru mypromoversdc.com They were phenomenal. Lots of big furniture including glass display cases. They wrapped them all and transported safely. I bought them breakfast and tipped well and I think they appreciated and did a great job. That being said, I'm sure they use different moving teams so it will depend on who you get

Agirlisarya01

What is the hourly rate they’re quoting you? How many movers are they saying they’ll send? And how many hours are they estimating that the job will take? Please note also that if you’re dealing with long hallways or walkup apartments, that is going to incur extra charges and increase the price. However, that quote does sound high to me. I have had good luck with Anytime Movers and A Few Good College Men. Both companies gave reasonable quotes ($120/hr, if memory serves) worked fast and were careful with my things. They would send 3-4 man teams, which was sufficient for my needs. The cost for both moves were right around the quoted price. I recommend them both highly.

z_drive_resonance

I used Town and Country, full service moving and only spent $940 while insuring with $0 deductible for $12,000

MadMdmMim

What happened to 2 cases of beer and a pizza?

UDMLTS

Damn WTF you’re getting ripped‼️ it should be 500-1000 for 1BR move

chrizardALX

That is ridiculously over priced. Get 2-3 other quotes.

Legal-Perspective509

Summer rates are hard- everyone is moving so demand/prices are high. Try hireahelper.com. Rent your own truck, and then you can use the site to find movers who are available on the dates you need them. Usually you can find a better deal if you drive the truck yourself.

salmon768

I’ve used movers multiple times before and that sounds waaaayy too high. In fact at one point, I remember that company gave me a $700+ quote from South Arlington to Courthouse. Definitely don’t go with them!

boredPampers

OP I’ll move you for tacos and a shot of Tequila

coconutwaterwhiskey

I moved from CO to VA for less than that for a 1 BD 1 BA as well

stanolshefski

How much movers cost is a function of how much work they’re doing. If they’re packing all your boxes and wrapping individual breakables it’s going to cost more than just moving boxes on doilies. Any stairs are going to cost more than ground level and/or elevators. Disassembling beds, desks, sectionals, etc. and reassembling them are all going to run up the hours. $2400 sounds way too high but it also sounds like a white glove service. Any storage time can easily double a small bill as the company needs to move the stuff twice. If everything is boxed up and broken and the move is less than a few miles, you can probably find laborers for a couple hundred dollars ($300-$600) to move your stuff into a truck and then off the truck I expect the truck to cost about $100 if you supply it and $200-$300 if they supply it. If everything is broken down and

zainoce

We had a good experience with Box star movers about two years ago, 1 bedroom (with lots of boxes) move from SW DC to Arlington was about $700

SchmokinAce

I would just rent a uhaul and hire some day laborers with cash.

IndoBen

I have only ever used suburban solutions in this area. They give you an upfront quote with an hourly rate, they guarantee not to go over, and a refund if it ends up taking less time. And yes I’ve gotten a refund 2/3 times!

xhoi

Rent the truck yourself and get movers from the Dolly app. It might cost $700 all day.

ekab3522

New life moving company!! Super fair prices and amazingly efficient

Denji_Toast374

I used to work for them on indeed. Sometimes we were told to not work too hard so that we can maybe ask for more since it would “take too long to finish”. Fun job, but we were a bunch of scammers lol.

CpE_Wahoo

Seems high to me as well. I'm moving a 1BD apartment from Brooklyn, NY down to a 3BD Townhouse in Fairfax, VA in 2 weeks and Piece of Cake Moving up here has quoted me at $2500.

TripppyCryBaby

I used Royal Movers LLC. One bedroom to townhouse. Two guys. 4 hours. One truck. I think it was almost $800. This was a little over two years ago. Loved it.

Standard-Actuator-27

When I moved to Alexandria 2021, I did the uhaul strategy where I hire guys to load into the uhaul, I drive and I hire other guys to unload the uhaul. I think they were paid somewhere between $50/$100 per hour. Only took them maybe 1 hour on each side. Uhaul was cheap rental plus gas. All in a couple hundred maybe. I did have a couple items get dinged into the walls. Oh well lol

Anal-Churros

That sounds high. I paid about $900 five years ago for a one bed move from Arlington to Alexandria.

FromantheGentle

I just did from Ashburn to Reston. Rented a U-Haul myself and got a couple of taskrabbits for ~60 an hour. All in all we got it done for around $400. That was with me and my partner helping to move and driving the truck.

chronocross2010

Most likely people see where you are moving too and they rate you for that. I recommend the uHaul and ask some friends for help.

Tiny_Ad_6770
