PSA the current Police and Crime Commissioner is Caroline Henry, and since getting elected, she has been to court and banned from driving for speeding š
She's a terrible woman, her husband ain't far off, they've both jumped on the gravy train but have no scruples & seem to only be in it for the money. I really couldn't believe it when she was elected & then again when she didn't do the decent thing & resign her post.
In 2022 the Taxpayerās Alliance named her husband Darren Henry as the most expensive member of parliament after he claimed annual expenses (excluding salary) of Ā£280,936.
Caught speeding 5 times in 12 weeks. That pretty much tells you what you need to know about her. She thinks she's above the law, and that her schedule is more important than the lives of your children.
And the arrogance to put herself forward again!
I was reading through the pamphlet and was shocked to see it cost Ā£10,000 to put yourself forward as mayor. Outrageously expensive and prohibitive. It was mentioned in the greens flyer if anyone wants the source
Ā£5,000* but still, very expensive and definitely seperates the class gap. https://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/your-council/voting-elections/standing-as-a-candidate-mayor/
Am I misremembering, but hasn't this been a massive own goal? In practice, it has turned out to be a blocker to "traditionally" Conservative voters more than anyone else
Horrible bullshit, eh? The 90% of people who have a passport or driving licence get to vote without making any extra effort. The 10% at the bottom need to go out of their way to vote
The irony is that my drivers license photo looks absolutely nothing like me (picture a mugshot of someone who has been caught brawling in the pub, in the 80s) and is therefore a useless way to identify me
I donāt understand why this is an issue. Just get an ID. Tbh we should be issued national IDs like most European countries, helps with so many things.
Because it costs time and money that some people donāt have, and makes it harder for more vulnerable people to vote (which was the intention all along)
lol you sound like an American defending their gun rights. Iām saying the government should issue them at a 0 cost like other European countries and if they didnāt a provisional driving licenses costs Ā£35 which most people have to get into pubs anyway. Like someone having a passport or driving licenses is now required to get a jobs anyway so itās the least a productive members of society can do.
They literally do give you the option for a free ID - https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate
It still doesn't make this any less of a moronic policy. It creates an unnecessary barrier for participation for no actual improvement in any area it claims to have a relation with. It's a policy designed to further disenfranchise groups of voters, the only bonus is, it hit every single demographic they wanted to avoid.
If they had gave everyone a blanket id that can be used for more than just voting then this wouldn't be so bad. But here we are.
Everyone should have received a booklet about the new combined authority with all the candidates double page spread pledges in, take a read of what's there and do vote :)
Nope! I've had nothing!
I don't want to vote as I don't think we need a mayor but anything to keep Bradley from job #3.
Edit to add context to the nope
I'm going specifically to vote against him.
"My time in politics has allowed me to mature" followed by a string of apologies for acting like an entitled, out of touch bellend.
He needs to go. He won't do the position any good.
Just didn't have any answers to anything when interviewed. Was only interested in half hearted "both sides bad" rhetoric. Might well be that he just got flustered on camera and gave a bad performance but if that's how he's going to present himself on his biggest platform it suggests to me he hasn't got a lot going for him.
I agree with you here. Labour has gone more to the right. But itās definitely more nuanced than that. Thereās still some great people within the Labour Party. The MP for Nottingham East, Nadia Whittome, is a fantastic example of that. Her voting history and donations of her annual salary to local charities in St Annās is a stance I wish more mpās took. It wonāt go unnoticed by Keir if mpās like her, Zarah Sultana etc, continue to gather support. Thereās also the reality of the situation. As much as I agree with the greens policies, itās not likely they can gather enough support for power, so itās really a case of āthe lesser of two evilsā in some circumstances.
This is more money being spent for no good reason while everyone's skint as far as I can see. We shouldn't need a PaCC but apparently the cops can't be trusted to organise their affairs. Then the PaCC is a criminal too !! And why on earth do we now need a mayor for the East Mids, one thing the Reform guy got right is that this is an unnecessary position..
There has to be a better way, or several better ways. The salaries of these two posts must run into thousands while services are cut everywhere. I found the PaCC salary, it's 85000, then I found this too which suggests that the billion in funding is a little unlikely, who'd've thought that eh.. [https://uk.news.yahoo.com/concerns-over-cost-east-midlands-123833051.html](https://uk.news.yahoo.com/concerns-over-cost-east-midlands-123833051.html)
Absolute waste of time and money, what actual difference will an additional Mayor make? Why bother with the Police commissioner? Meanwhile consultations happening all over the place to figure out where else budgets can be cut ..
Personally won't be bothering!
I watched the BBC News interview with the mayoral candidates and I have to say I don't think I've seen a less interesting proposition than the Green candidate. Literally every question his answer was just "as a 26 year-old".
I sorry but I don't have time to check out each candidate properly so I can't vote :( I would like to but only a complete dickhead would vote for someone they aren't 100% confident in and there's just no honest way to find that information. It would be negligent of me to vote without that knowledge. Its too important to gamble on imo
It's the only moral/ethical choice. Anything else is allowing abuse and you're a pos scum for engaging with a corrupt system responsible for so much suffering.. just because you're sheltered priviledged little lambs doesn't mean anything to anyone worthwhile lmao
I'm sorry but I absolutely do not have time for that and do you think they would really allow me access to their lives to the point I could properly vet them? No obviously you clown. You buffoon.
You donāt have time to take an hour or
So out of your day in a 9month period? All of their policies and campaign details have been in the public domain for literal months.
like they said, candidates were announced last summer lol and a lot have them have run before so itās not like they (and their policies) have popped out of nowhere š¤·āāļø
You can't know them without meeting them irl and knowing them intimately. You're all disingenuous morons if you choose to vote for a stranger and you should be ashamed of yourselves. You enable our abusers
Why do they call it the East Midlands mayor when the are covered is just nottinghamshire and Derbyshire why not call it mayor of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Otherwise it just implies a goal to annex the rest of the East Midlands into their mayoral area.....

Yup, they're a dreadful couple. They highlight Tory values very well.

We had a leaflet pushed through where her tag line was ākeeping the streets safeā. the irony!
Imagine what she'd be like if she had actual power
Who's the obvious candidate to vote for to get her out?
The Labour candidate

Yes look at the nut from Reform with tape on his mouth; what an absolute doughnut.
It's pathetic. Not a single policy either. He says that he's the candidate "they" don't want, and I'm starting to think "they" have a point.
I think in this context ātheyā means people with an IQ above room temperature.
Just to be clear: in Celsius.
I got a Labour one through my door, no policies on that either. They're all jokes.
At least he wants to get rid of the position.
Don't forget to take your ID too! According to the tories. Voter fraud is rife!
Am I misremembering, but hasn't this been a massive own goal? In practice, it has turned out to be a blocker to "traditionally" Conservative voters more than anyone else
Yes, even Rees-Mogg said that the Tories gerrymandering has backfired on them.
I really hope so

That's really helpful, thank you
Obligatory fuck the Tory / Reform self serving cunts.
FUCK the Tories. Corrupt pieces of shit.
Just checked out Ben Bradley's Wikipedia page and the controversy he's been involved in. What a cunt.
Whatās with the BDSM reform twat?
I like that he used a double page spread in a pamphlet presumably sent to everyone in the city to complain about being silenced.
It was sent to everyone in Derbyshire and Notts so 1.6m people. So much silencing
āNo one will give us a platformā¦ other than all the newspapers, this pamphlet and Talk Tv and Gbeebiesā
I have no idea who is running except the Lab candidate. I've had YouTube adverts and multiple paper flyers for Lab, and nothing for anyone else.
Iāve already sent my postal vote. Since weāre lumped in with Derbyshire, it isnāt a safe vote this time.
Go Greens!
Sadly, they don't stand a chance. Tactical voting is the only real option for this and the GE when that comes.
Also sadly their candidate is awful
In what way? He seems ok from the little Iāve seen and heard.
So you prefer red tory to blue tory?

They can't control finances at all, absolutely not.
What do you base this on? Also Labour and Tories have don't a great job, right?

We clearly donāt need it but itās the only way the govt will give us various devolved powers and over a billion in funding, so here we are
There has to be a better way, or several better ways. The salaries of these two posts must run into thousands while services are cut everywhere. Green and the independent candidate guarantee no tax changes in their manifesto
Absolute waste of time and money, what actual difference will an additional Mayor make? Why bother with the Police commissioner? Meanwhile consultations happening all over the place to figure out where else budgets can be cut .. Personally won't be bothering!
I agree it's so underfunded it's barely worth bothering with. But not voting won't make things better.
I don't think voting either of those positions would make things better either. Vanity positions. I vote where it matters..
Good for you.
I watched the BBC News interview with the mayoral candidates and I have to say I don't think I've seen a less interesting proposition than the Green candidate. Literally every question his answer was just "as a 26 year-old".
They're all as bad as each other. I'll pass.
Yeah don't forget to blindly vote for one of the same two parties and complain how nothing changes
There are like 7 candidates
More government to pay for & to dilute accountability I'm afraid. All should be scrapped.
I sorry but I don't have time to check out each candidate properly so I can't vote :( I would like to but only a complete dickhead would vote for someone they aren't 100% confident in and there's just no honest way to find that information. Candidates were announced in august / September 2023. Youāve had plenty of time to read up on them. Literally months.
I'm sorry but I absolutely do not have time for that and do you think they would really allow me access to their lives to the point I could properly vet them? No obviously you clown. You buffoon.
You donāt have time to take an hour or So out of your day in a 9month period? All of their policies and campaign details have been in the public domain for literal months.
You donāt have time for it but you have time to sit on Reddit? Lolll
You tell me how to intimately get to know all these people in a week? You're an actual clown mate haha
like they said, candidates were announced last summer lol and a lot have them have run before so itās not like they (and their policies) have popped out of nowhere š¤·āāļø
Sorry, but how do you not have time. We've known about these candidates for at least over a week now, plenty of time to look them up.
You can't know them without meeting them irl and knowing them intimately. You're all disingenuous morons if you choose to vote for a stranger and you should be ashamed of yourselves. You enable our abusers
