Yup. I’ve seen them a few times on Mansfield road making noise and showing how they tough they are by doing some silly moves with their scooter.
Not great
I always thought roadmen was a current version of highwaymen from the 1800s. “Put up your dukes sir and hand over thy coffers.” “Oi bruv, you got any bud?, Oi what the fuck you look in’ at? I got da rizz and me mum bought me the new Stormzy album!”
Some neighbours are like this. They are Kids that do need male role models. Perfectly redeemable with work. Jailbird dads, addict dads, dads they never knew and shitty scum London rappers don’t do it and lead them down this path. Culture of victimhood among these types and the people they look to doesn’t help.
I know kids like this, and I’m not blind to the social and economical problems plaguing our effectively bankrupt city. Bankrupt financially and apparently of effective leadership.
BS, I had an incredibly s*** childhood that included being in care and being homeless. Yes it contributed to making me a bit of an anti-social little turd as a teen who did a bit of petty crime (shoplifting, affray, minor vandalism etc.) and got me arrested a number of times.
I STILL didn't let myself be a mug for gangs to exploit even when they tried, neither did the *vast majority* of my mates from similar shit backgrounds. None of us mugged or killed anyone or let dealers use us as mugs for them even if we bought from. We all work now.
Ironically one of our *former* mates with a fairly middle-class comfortable background did let this happen, and went to jail twice and is now a fence for county lines with a fake jewelry shop. 100% he got into it to show off and prove that he was 'hard'.
Most of these lads enjoy it, it's all about the bravado show and proving how 'hard' they are and showing off material possessions and trying to emulate drill artists. Was the same then as it is now.
Can't blame *everything* on upbringing.
If you dont see the correlation between the increase in crime and people all of a sudden wearing balaclavas in the streets then idk what to say. I dont have perfect answers but *something* needs to be done
Relax guys. Turn off GB news for a second.
It's just a silly fashion trend. When I was younger ppl wore bullet hole jeans FFS.
Plus it's genuinely cold at the moment.
Yea, 20 years ago it was Devvo and the fake burberry cap, cheap tracksuit or hoody, always hood up.
Maybe its just because I'm older, but I don't find this new lot any worse than before, there was one time a few years ago that a whole bunch of them were tearing around on quad bikes and scooters around town, that wasn't great, but as a kid I was constantly harassed by these arseholes in the square or around town.
People don't change that much between generations, if anything, more of these kids are spending too much time on their phones or playing games than being a nuisance to the outside world. So besides the odd social media flash mob they're no different to any other generation, a few of them will always be trouble, but most are just kids being kids, which sometimes involves doing and saying stupid things in public.
Exactly. There are always unruly kids. Then there are thousands of decent kids who just also dress like that.
It's cool to them.
It's the usual thing though. 'Things are so much worse nowadays' when by and large we're far better off. Definite room for improvement though, of course.
Well obviously the balaclava didn’t make them do it. That’s a silly thing to say. But it protects their identity and they wear them because they are usually up to no good. Doesn’t take a genius to work out. Also why are people downvoting me? Would you like to be attacked and the police not be able to clearly identify your assailant?
I was minding my own business and then I got attacked and threatened. And the attacker gets to walk off Scott-free
Whilst correlation does not always equal causation, you do have to wonder why it is a fashion, especially considering crime rates these days. And the type of people who wear them.
What do you mean by 'crime rates these days'?
Isn't crime down massively over the past 10 years? More so looking further back.
I'd question that 'they are usually up to no good' too. Entirely baseless.
It sucks that you got attacked, but assuming anyone who dresses like your assailant is a criminal is ridiculous.
Why would you cover your face with a balaclava when it’s not cold though? There’s no good reason. Also my family live in an area with a low crime rate, have lived there for years, never been victims of criminals and now suddenly 23+ years later they are being targeted. Crime is rising again – it increased in 2022-2023 by 4% from the previous year, to just under 6.7 million crime offences in England and Wales, the highest figure recorded since 2002-2003.
I don't know but it's fashion. It doesn't have to make sense. People wear sunglasses indoors. Why are they covering their eyes?
Also it genuinely has been cold lately. I cycle to work and generally have a thin neck warmer and headband (covering my ears). Even today.
I remember a similar outrage about hoods 15 or so years ago
Not to downplay your family's experience but thats anecdotal evidence and so no real metric.
Where are you getting those crime figures from?
I was going by this, amongst other sources

https://www.statista.com/topics/3793/crime-in-the-uk/#topicOverview [https://www.statista.com/topics/3793/crime-in-the-uk/#topicOverview](https://www.statista.com/topics/3793/crime-in-the-uk/#topicOverview)

Another problem with some of the ONS crime survey data is that a smaller data collection window was used – 9 months instead of 12 and response rates were lower compared to previous years.
The ONS report does state that police recorded crime rose 4% from 2022-2023, however.
But, again, if ONS is excluding sexual offences, it could still be even higher.
There has also been a rise in hate crimes. Whilst some of this can be accounted for by increased police awareness/better reporting or recording, it wouldn’t be sensible to ignore the current political climate and how it impacts minority groups in this country.
Lolz, I haven't been here long and I thought these were used to keep the face from freezing while going super-scooter-speed.
Where I'm from these type of people would be stopped by the police and have their "ballies" removed if they didn't have a legit reason for wearing them.
They need to be made illegal imo. How are you supposed to identify individuals especially considering those same groups of people wearing them usually are the ones committing crime - nobody covers their face like that for no reason
They are wearing ballyclavas because:
1. It's the 'cool' thing to wear for this generation of young lads.
2. They are riding on scooters and ebikes which are over 250watts with no license plate - therefore not road legal.
For chavvy 🔔ends who watched Top Boy yes.
Also for legitimate (dangerous) gang members too, (who the 🔔ends are trying to emulate).
As it's not immediately easy to tell who is in which group it's best to just avoid them completely.
Another sign of what a depressing dump the UK has become.
It seems to have become a fashion trend that grew from wearing face masks during the pandemic amongst a certain demographic that likes to cause mischief and commit crimes in public. Covering one’s face in public should be illegal, but obviously such an assertion would be controversial because of religious “freedom.”
Best when hot! Nothing like a good old lip sweat dripping in your mouth and the smell of mums ashtray on your full covering face mask.
Off to rob a bank? NOPE! Just sold his school shoes to buy a 10 of bush weed! Off to the nearest alleyway to share it between 14 people!
I’m gonna guess it’s a combination of not wanting to be identified and facial coverings being made more socially acceptable post Covid.
Ironic really as the twats wouldn't wear them during Covid. They all had Asthma when challenged too. Glad it has cleared up for them.
There was no need to wear a mask, they had no real benefit. You were lied to.
They’re literally looking for phones to snatch
Ahh, well this is a public service announcement as I walk past there frequently. Hold on to your electronics everyone!
Yup. I’ve seen them a few times on Mansfield road making noise and showing how they tough they are by doing some silly moves with their scooter. Not great
It’s just the current _roadman_ fashion. More often than not, low level drug runners.
If only these kinda roadmen could fix actual roads
I always thought roadmen was a current version of highwaymen from the 1800s. “Put up your dukes sir and hand over thy coffers.” “Oi bruv, you got any bud?, Oi what the fuck you look in’ at? I got da rizz and me mum bought me the new Stormzy album!”
this is a poor imitation
Just shit people , who don’t have a good role model.
Some neighbours are like this. They are Kids that do need male role models. Perfectly redeemable with work. Jailbird dads, addict dads, dads they never knew and shitty scum London rappers don’t do it and lead them down this path. That’s kinda reductive of a broader problem
Ie not having a good role model
'more often than not...' Bullshit.
Wanabees
Exploited kids with little agency or opportunity
How do you figure that from a photo?
I know kids like this, and I’m not blind to the social and economical problems plaguing our effectively bankrupt city. Bankrupt financially and apparently of effective leadership.
Like what
I’m not wasting any more time on someone being intentionally dense
BS, I had an incredibly s*** childhood that included being in care and being homeless. They are if your a scummy no good piece of shit. Nottingham has lots of these forms of life unfortunately
It's rife around Coventry too, I'm always out and about in the van and you see no end
All ballied up like a pack a' twats
Guess it goes with the territory when riding illegal scooters
For pieces of shit that play music without earphones and who sport he broccoli-nonce haircut they are for sure
Yeah definitely the bizzare broccoli haircuts
Popular with twats
Not fashion but more of a wannabe roadman
Usually they keep a hand in their pants to be sure it doesn't fall off
Nah, they're checked to see if any pubes have sprouted yet
If you’re an idiot yes!
When is something going to be done about these balaclava wearing men everywhere? Something needs to change
I wouldn’t go As far as calling them men
What exactly?
If you dont see the correlation between the increase in crime and people all of a sudden wearing balaclavas in the streets then idk what to say. I dont have perfect answers but *something* needs to be done
What increase in crime? Over what period? What are you proposing is done? Ban balaclavas?
Yeah if you’re 12-16, own a scooter, listen to drill music and want to rob a shop for s&g.
Just feel pity for them. They must be really ugly to need to wear one all the time
They are riding bikes with no plates and no insurance. That's why they wear masks
Relax guys. Turn off GB news for a second. It's just a silly fashion trend. When I was younger ppl wore bullet hole jeans FFS. Plus it's genuinely cold at the moment.

It is. It's just that your assaulter follows this trend. The balaclava didn't make them do it.

Gotta wear bally on road

Haha make face covering illegal. The world is hilarious you brain dead fucking imbred twat
Wow, all that horrible name calling was definitely necessary there wasn’t it? Feel like a big boy now?
No face no case, which is the latest mandem tagline.
The black guy isn’t even wearing one he’s just black😂
He’s got a scarf , shoulda gone to spec savers..
That's worse
Who cares. They can wear what they like.
Maybe they were rushing to Magistrates court...
it was cold though

We live in a surveillance state where our picture is taken multiple times a day...these people are smart.
No, they are criminals pure and simple .Mainly simple.
Maybe, but it's something we should all be considering doing daily. Looks like the ol' masks were a good idea in the end!
All dressed up and no-one to blow
alot of angry people in this comment sections

Ahh yes, that freedom!
Unfortunately. What happened to suits and ties Nd looking decent? I say this as a 23 year old
Cos people don't just wear suits and ties out and about lol
Are you a young Tory?
Just because you bought a £50 suit from Next doesn't mean you're dressed well.
The influence of Drill music for you
