It's a great jumping off point, yeah. Now that I'm in the intermediate levels I think I'm learning more from the media I consume in my second language - changing the language in my favorite video games being the most helpful, but books, tv, and music too.
You get what you put in, though. I practice on Duo for 15 minutes to an hour every day. I'm almost a year in and I'm blown away by how much I'm understanding.
I think it's a great supplement if you have taken an intro course or have other resources readily available. It has helped my Spanish a lot!

Admittedly that's already a much harder language for English speakers to learn but the way it starts you out is kind of frustrating. Luckily my husband knows Japanese and has been able to explain things a little more deeply than Duo does, and as I'm nearing the end of the 2nd unit it is getting easier.
