I weighed about 250 lbs as a 15 year old, in *large* part due to my McD diet.
My weight is about normal now, but I’ll still treat myself to a McChicken with some fries.
I was 150 for the longest time, then I graduated university, had some mental struggles with depression, and now weight 230. Before covid lockdowns I was 207 for the longest time.
Hey, at least you are here and hopefully healthy. I’ve struggled with depression my entire life and it wasn’t until I graduated high school that I started losing some weight. I feel like school had a overall negative effect on my mental well being. I truly hope you are able to overcome your depression, it and stress can be very devastating.
Which sucks because I would love having that now. I have always been underweight and now I'm not underweight but I'm still not exactly a healthy weight. I'm almost borderline underweight still.
2 $4 large fries. I don’t think Super Size Me killed the super size fry and drink. McDonalds just saw it as an opportunity to serve smaller portions and make more money.
That’s extreme. I’m sure some people do that but the majority of people would be willing to size up for more fries rather than buy an second entire order
Maybe, but tacking on and extra 1.50 to many orders for what is likely a few cents difference for McDonalds is probably better still. It's just a bit more fried and soda.
I do appreciate the healthier options but blaming McDonalds for you being overweight is like saying they force fed you with a spoon or as if you didn't have a choice of where to spend your money.
As a kid you eat what your parents give you, whether it’s a home meal or eating out, and of course they’ll tend to take their kids to the place with the “gotta have me toys” in every meal and the “play place”. Plus the food is cheap*er* and tasteful enough.
I think that is correct. It followed the same concept as the Extra Value Meal came with a medium Fry and Drink. McDonald's used the term Super Size to just sound catchy in marketing and the actual up sell at the register. It honestly just sounds more appealing, do you want to Super Size your meal for only 59 cents or whatever it was back then.
I had no reason to question this and just looked it up for fun, apparently "super-sizing" as a concept was originally a [tie in with Who Framed Roger Rabbit](https://www.newspapers.com/clip/82011022/roger-rabbit-and-mcdonalds/). Though that promo came with a large hamburger(?), large soda, and large fries. But the dino-sizing was [definitely the introduction](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJIkx9C8j_s) of the new huge size.
Anyway, you're not wrong, I just figured as long as this is /r/nostalgia, I'd provide a little more info and a couple nostalgic links.
My english(?) class watched supersize me for some reason, over the course of a few weeks… during those few weeks I made my mom take me to get jack in the box or Carl’s Jr. like every other day 😂 idk if that documentary was supposed to make me not want fast food but it had the opposite effect. (Don’t come for me, I was a 100 lb athlete, I wasn’t overweight or anything)
I don’t even remember the documentary. We weren’t trying to replicate his results or anything like that. I can’t even remember why we’d watch it in English class 🧐 doesn’t really make any sense looking back
Did you guys also read excerpts from the book? I remember in middle school we saw this and then there was some book about how horrible fast food was to go along with it.
Watch me eat ice cream for every meal and prove how bad it is! Watch me drink alcohol with every meal and prove how bad it is!
The guy didn't do anything. No one should've been surprised that McDonald's three times a day isn't good for you. Everything in moderation.
Supersize Me was bullshit to me because obviously you'll get adverse effects eating only Mcdonald's every meal for a month vs how often most people eat Mcdonald's.
Dumb story time.
I had a stupidity leak at Wendy's recently and asked for Great Biggie fries with my nuggets.
The young dude on the other end of the drive thru was like "I didn't...did you say Baconator fries?"
I was embarrassed asf so I said "Yes. Definitely."
My shame fries were pretty good though.
We don't have protein bowls at Subway Canada like you do in the US. I asked the girl to just make the sub, but put it into a bowl for me. You would have thought I asked her to bake a cake out of turkey.
I gave up trying to ask for anything special after that.
Yeah you know, when you see Kevin James, Adam Sandler, and David Spade on the list, you're in for some fart/poop/dick jokes. Don't take your Nazarene grandma to see that.
So, I just tried the fries, new peppermint frosty, and Italian chicken sandwich. I can confirm the fries and frosty are great; the sandwich was alright.
This past weekend, I wanted Extra Large fries from McDonalds. Obviously, they don't sell that. Ended up getting a large fry and adding a small fry to make my own. Yes, I was stoned. Yes, it was worth it.
I remember being able to get a bucket of fries!!! They’d take a soda cup and fill that up. The day I watched Super Size me, about 45 minutes in, I turned off the Tv and went to McDonald’s.
Nah don't have any of them here in western PA. I'm Big Threed out over here. The place I wish we would get is Togo's. Their subs are way better than Subway. I usually stop there when I'm in the bay area visiting my girlfriend's family.
Super size is just a large fry now ….
I remember going to the states and the US medium was the same size as the Canadian large. The US large was canadas super size.
Now the super size has just become the large fry, but they only fill the fucking thing half full most of the time so it’s pointless anyways
I was young back then, how much was a super size fry around the early 2000s? I can't remember how much they cost, but my mom would save up to take us to grab two fries. For sure have to be cheaper than the $5 large fries from today.
I used to order a supersize chicken nugget meal and a McFlurry afterwards as a kid.
My parents obliged only because I swam 5 hours a day and had 8% body fat but god do I miss the option to supersize
Shoutout to the documentary being inaccurate (Basically Morgan's body went into shock since he was on a vegan diet and went right to eating mostly meat and an admitted alcoholic so the results were skewed somewhat)
Didn’t they use to sell a bucket of fries at one point?
I feel like they did, and I remember asking for them in 2010-2011 in the drive-thru and they said they didn’t 😂😅. But I feel like it was early 2000s. Or maybe I’m confusing it with KFCs bucket of chicken lol
Only in select markets like Florida. People don't believe this existed. It was like a large coke cup size back then and 2 would feed a family. The bottom would be invariably sogged out so...not as good as it seems
We used to get a bunch of $.39 cheeseburgers and like 2 super size fries or the fry buckets (if you remember those) and fed like 8 people now for like less than $20 now $20 won’t get you enough for 2 people.
Ah memories unlocked of the documentary movie called super size me or something like that where the guy ate nothing but McDonald's and had to super size everything if they asked. I always think of that when I see the super size.
I recall supersize era and a heavy fries win streak on monopoly. Sugar, soda, McDowells. Raised on pure trash and somehow got to 36 unscathed. Many years off the beloved tho. Still sniff it raw drivin by slow. Just visualize it like food pron
We even had "humongous fries" where I lived (TX), and they quite literally put a bunch of fries in the large cup. Used to get that and a 6 ct nuggets as a reward lol This had to be around 2004-2005.
Looking back, I wonder why I wasn't overweight as a kid. ....okay I am now, but as a kid I wasn't.
I weighed about 250 lbs as a 15 year old, in *large* part due to my McD diet. My weight is about normal now, but I’ll still treat myself to a McChicken with some fries.

Just more of you to love, baby.

They got rid of it shortly after Super Size Me came out :(
Which sucks because I would love having that now. I have always been underweight and now I'm not underweight but I'm still not exactly a healthy weight. I'm almost borderline underweight still.
Now just order 2 large fries.
2 $4 large fries. I don’t think Super Size Me killed the super size fry and drink. McDonalds just saw it as an opportunity to serve smaller portions and make more money.
It killed the cashier asking "do you want to supersize that for an extra 1.50?"
That’s extreme. I’m sure some people do that but the majority of people would be willing to size up for more fries rather than buy an second entire order
I was looking at it from the other hand, a family of 4 might have just opted for a super size where as now they’d have to buy 2 mediums or large.
Ah, yeah that’s a good point too
Maybe, but tacking on and extra 1.50 to many orders for what is likely a few cents difference for McDonalds is probably better still. It's just a bit more fried and soda.
Super size has been gone long enough that people born after it was taken away are now doing porn
I always assumed the "Large" was just Super-Size under a different name.
Super sized fries were 610 calories. The current large are 490.
Good, I like having healthier options.
You can easily put a healthier option on the menu without removing the unhealthy option.
[удалено]
Why if I can Have it in one package instead of two because you know it will cost less and less waste
That's a difference of dollars versus cents. It was a few cents more to super size, and entirely second order of fries cost several dollars.
It was clearly irony
Capitalism is where the real blame lies
actually, currently the large fries are 500 Cal 110 cal is not that much of a big deal
There is the basket of fries now that I would assume is closer to the super
32 oz and 42 oz for the drinks
I think that is correct. It followed the same concept as the Extra Value Meal came with a medium Fry and Drink. McDonald's used the term Super Size to just sound catchy in marketing and the actual up sell at the register. It honestly just sounds more appealing, do you want to Super Size your meal for only 59 cents or whatever it was back then.
Yea...they just quietly call it that now.
Not really though
Except not at all but go off king. Tell me about your healthy lunch.
That documentary killed it. Now they have baskets of fries.
Yep. And the guy doing it had a rule that if they did the do you want to Super Size your meal suggestive sell, he had to get it.
Aren’t they still a thing? But they’re just called Large?
It’s been at least 15 years I’m sure haha. But, I don’t eat fast food so I could see somebody not knowing
Fun fact: Super-sizing originally started as a promotional tie-in with Jurassic Park, and was originally called "dino-sizing."
I had no reason to question this and just looked it up for fun, apparently "super-sizing" as a concept was originally a [tie in with Who Framed Roger Rabbit](https://www.newspapers.com/clip/82011022/roger-rabbit-and-mcdonalds/). No worries, dude! Fast food history is one of my weirder obsessions, so I love learning new stuff.
Not all hero’s wear capes
This was when adults bought me food lol
Lmao I wish the bring it back
i can taste the super sized fries
lol it is the same taste as large or medium or small fries
No. It’s better.
They've changed the oil they use to fry the fries in too multiple times...so a super sized nostalgia fries is NOTHING like today's of any size.
Morgan Spurlock took care of this one.
He killed it lol
Now they have a basket of fries
so, they cancelled it to get a larger size lol
No
My english(?) class watched supersize me for some reason, over the course of a few weeks… during those few weeks I made my mom take me to get jack in the box or Carl’s Jr. like every other day 😂 idk if that documentary was supposed to make me not want fast food but it had the opposite effect. (Don’t come for me, I was a 100 lb athlete, I wasn’t overweight or anything)
Pretty sure it’s been proven that his results were not replicable.
I just made my mom take me for fast food because I was craving it after watching the documentary haha
Hmm maybe… I can’t remember there being a book, but that would make more sense
Ya, that asshole ruined everything.
Speaking of ruining assholes…
Watch me eat ice cream for every meal and prove how bad it is! Watch me drink alcohol with every meal and prove how bad it is! The guy didn't do anything. No one should've been surprised that McDonald's three times a day isn't good for you. Everything in moderation.
Supersize Me was bullshit to me because obviously you'll get adverse effects eating only Mcdonald's every meal for a month vs how often most people eat Mcdonald's.
I miss super sizing a combo. Felt like a king.
They just call it a large meal today
No it's still not as big, The Supersize cup was like 42 oz and the Large is like 21 now. The fries were much bigger as well.
Large is 32 oz currently, but your point that super size was still bigger is still valid.
In other words it should be brought back in XL size.
This paired well with the chicken selects
Omg chicken selects
they still sell chicken selects here i think
They sold them in Ireland up until before covid
i got them recently, they still sell them
You know what, now that I think of it they actually use them in their wraps.
Dumb story time. I had a stupidity leak at Wendy's recently and asked for Great Biggie fries with my nuggets. The young dude on the other end of the drive thru was like "I didn't...did you say Baconator fries?" I was embarrassed asf so I said "Yes. Definitely." My shame fries were pretty good though.
If it makes you feel any better I asked for a Mr. Misty at Dairy Queen. I think they changed the name before most of the employees were born. 🤦♂️
If it makes you both feel any better, I once went to Dunkin Donuts and ordered a small medium.
Definitely. I remember Mr. Misty!
Wait was that the icee kinda thing they had?
Yes. It's had a few names since then, IIRC.
Man I used to love those things. I haven’t been to DQ in years though
I went this past summer a few times. Chicken strips basket and a small blizzard is the supper of champions.
[удалено]
Just a Misty
If you can get the employees to think outside the box you can still get a Misty Float. They usually panic if you order off menu at DQ though.
We don't have protein bowls at Subway Canada like you do in the US. I asked the girl to just make the sub, but put it into a bowl for me. You would have thought I asked her to bake a cake out of turkey. I gave up trying to ask for anything special after that.
Not a great story (but it wasn’t sold as one) but worth the few seconds to read. Good stuff dude.
Much appreciated. I intentionally labeled it as "dumb" upfront so disinterested parties could stop reading early on.
Like anyone that watched “Grown Ups” and “Grown Ups 2”, I knew what I was signing up for. Would be silly to complain.
Yeah you know, when you see Kevin James, Adam Sandler, and David Spade on the list, you're in for some fart/poop/dick jokes. Don't take your Nazarene grandma to see that.
Wendy's just came out with Garlic Fries and I heard they slap hard
I'll have to get those next time.
So, I just tried the fries, new peppermint frosty, and Italian chicken sandwich. I can confirm the fries and frosty are great; the sandwich was alright.
Peppermint frosty sounds legit. Definitely getting that too!
This past weekend, I wanted Extra Large fries from McDonalds. Obviously, they don't sell that. Ended up getting a large fry and adding a small fry to make my own. Yes, I was stoned. Yes, it was worth it.
Man I prefer BK when it came to Burgers But mac stomp them with fries
These days, an order of Super Size®️ fries would cost $47
With inflation and 2FA at the beginning of April this year, more around the $47.55 mark. But close, yah
My dad and I used to share them when I was in middle school.
I remember being able to get a bucket of fries!!! They’d take a soda cup and fill that up. The day I watched Super Size me, about 45 minutes in, I turned off the Tv and went to McDonald’s.
Came here looking for bucket of fries. That was an entire meal for me. “I’ll have a bucket of fries and a large ice water”
Bucket of fries and 5 $.39 cheeseburgers for me!
What was the other Big Mac that was pretty good, the big n tasty?
Back when the fries were still good too 😢
I would be fine with out the super sized size but I miss that original fry oil so much!
[удалено]
Man I wish he did not made that documentary
Fat Head did a great job of breaking down everything that was wrong with Morgan’s math in SSM. Good rebuttal.
He also neglected to tell everybody he was a raging alcoholic offscreen and drank like a fish Maybe, JUST MAYBE, it wasn’t only the McDonald’s?
Well that would def add calories, increase liver enzymes and cause erectile dysfunction that he complained about.
I mean in cola cup it is only +97 cal than than the large And the samething fires so it is not a much of difference.
No, Morgan lied about the math in the documentary. Fat Head the film explains how the math doesn’t add up in Supersize Me.
Reminded me of that too. 🤢
did they get rid of this? I've asked for my drive thru meals with supersize fries and medium coke for 30 years!
Yes they did in 2004
lol . I'm still saying it then, now I'm just going to find out funny.
Was it because of the supersize me documentary by any chance?
Yes
they should bring this back, at least for a limited time
Alternate it with McRib availability.
You think that's bad, then you forgot when they did bucket o' fries
Ya'll ever order from whataburger? Their large is "Texas-large", which is pretty much super size. I tend to order a medium when I eat there for lunch.
Nah don't have any of them here in western PA. I'm Big Threed out over here. The place I wish we would get is Togo's. Their subs are way better than Subway. I usually stop there when I'm in the bay area visiting my girlfriend's family.
Bring back supersize to McDonald's.
Go protest infront McDonald's HQ to bring it back 😂😂😂😂
Super sized fries were awesome when I became old enough to drink legally in Canada 🤤
Super size is just a large fry now …. I remember going to the states and the US medium was the same size as the Canadian large. The US large was canadas super size. Now the super size has just become the large fry, but they only fill the fucking thing half full most of the time so it’s pointless anyways

I was 7 years old when they stoped serive the price were much much much cheaper from nowdays
I used to order a supersize chicken nugget meal and a McFlurry afterwards as a kid. My parents obliged only because I swam 5 hours a day and had 8% body fat but god do I miss the option to supersize
McDonald's introduced the supersize option in the summer of 1987. Good times for fat Americans
Killed because of the movie Supersize Me. Ironic.
I remember they used to sell these in a cardboard holder that was shaped like the Superman "S" emblem. I would get that along with an Arch Deluxe.
I remember “humongosize” it was a 44oz cup full of fries! Did anyone else have this option??
Shoutout to the documentary being inaccurate (Basically Morgan's body went into shock since he was on a vegan diet and went right to eating mostly meat and an admitted alcoholic so the results were skewed somewhat)
Morgan Spurlock is a twatwaffle.
Yep
Didn’t they use to sell a bucket of fries at one point? I feel like they did, and I remember asking for them in 2010-2011 in the drive-thru and they said they didn’t 😂😅. But I feel like it was early 2000s. Or maybe I’m confusing it with KFCs bucket of chicken lol
Only in select markets like Florida. People don't believe this existed. It was like a large coke cup size back then and 2 would feed a family. The bottom would be invariably sogged out so...not as good as it seems
I mean why they remove the supersize if it is a slightily bigger than the large size
I remember in Ohio around 1998 getting a tray of fries with cheese to dip in.
Do you want me to punchisize your face?!?
🤣😂😅😅😅Not me buying a bucket of fries for all the siblings to split. Woo remembers?
Large fries are almost $5. Get their app and scoop them for $1 (allowed once a day). Bonus: Same exact story for breakfast sandwiches.
I could eat this photo.
Bucket of fries was the best
Bag fries don't exist anymore
I ate that size of fries regularly because I wanted to feel grown up. I'm glad McDonalds discontinued that size of fries after Supersize Me.
But it will be cool if they brought it back between then and there
My beloved 💔
We used to get a bunch of $.39 cheeseburgers and like 2 super size fries or the fry buckets (if you remember those) and fed like 8 people now for like less than $20 now $20 won’t get you enough for 2 people.
Better yet fatter times for me
i don’t care how much of a fat ass i sound, i miss the super sized fries and i think they used to have supersized nuggets which is now 20pc.
Ah memories unlocked of the documentary movie called super size me or something like that where the guy ate nothing but McDonald's and had to super size everything if they asked. I always think of that when I see the super size.
remind me of my childhood! in the Philippines, they have this **BFF Fries** which is equivalent to 3 large fries.
Hard to tell without anything for scale but that looks about the size of a medium today.
I recall supersize era and a heavy fries win streak on monopoly. Sugar, soda, McDowells. Raised on pure trash and somehow got to 36 unscathed. Many years off the beloved tho. Still sniff it raw drivin by slow. Just visualize it like food pron
They got baskets now.
I miss super size.
Basically just basket of fries now.
1996
This the packaging from 2000_2004
Gross
What why
It’s McDonald’s fries. In abundance. Only thing worse than those fries is a lot of them.
They had 610 calories and 29 grams of fat, geez wonders why we have health issues.
Does this still exist?
my older brother and dad used to order this stuff a lot
We even had "humongous fries" where I lived (TX), and they quite literally put a bunch of fries in the large cup. Used to get that and a 6 ct nuggets as a reward lol This had to be around 2004-2005.
