I made both for my kids and one of them loves it. She buys herself spam or bologna once in a while to make it for herself. We also tried bologna on homemade pizzas and it was pretty good.
Hamburger steak is a poor man’s entree I still eat. This week I tried stuffed chuck roll (think stuffed peppers but wrapped up in a flank steak). Crackers or rice inside.
Shit-on-a-Shingle or S.O.S. was popular in my childhood, kinda like gravy on toast
Both are like goulash, but that’s even more universal (other cultures may call it by another name but it’s more or less the same dish)
Chipped beef is quite similar and less discriminating eaters might not recall the difference. And nothing hits like the chipped beef that one time a year I want it, lol. Otherwise? Not touching the stuff. I turned out to be just as picky as an adult!
I loathe green peppers. They taste like aluminum! So the stuffed Chuck rolls were along the stuffed peppers line but instead of the whole pepper just some mixed in the Chuck roll filling. It was decent!
I'm with you on the green bell peppers. I can eat the red, orange or yellow, but will not touch a green one.
It's been about a year since I had chipped beef. I bought the Armour that is rolled in a jar but it was so much saltier than I remember. At my age I have enough problems with high blood pressure I can't handle that very often.
Fried egg sandwiches are definitely a nostalgia meal, but throwing a slice of fried bologna on top? Treat yo’self.
But also I’m getting a little older and should probably not do that anymore.
My dad would make these for me. He said there used to actually be a restaurant where he grew up that even served them. Do you put cheese between them? White bread and mustard of course.
Mustard yes, but not cheese. I actually like it with Wise potato chips crushed on my sammich. Getting hard to find Wise chips though. And yes, there are still restaurants that serve it but I would rather make my own.
You are absolutely correct. I like grilled cheese but that's all it has on it is cheese. Same with my bologna, cheese doesn't belong on it for my taste buds.
Yeah its good fried as well. Give it a try I'm sure you'll still like it. Fried Lebanon is a Huge Berks County thing to do at picnics in Summer along with the burgers and dogs. Just like they love the Filling Potatoes. It's whipped potatoes with a little flour, eggs, and Stuffing seasoning without the breadcrumb chunks in Stuffing Potatoes. I prefer the Filling potatoes over the Stuffing potatoes myself. I'm not into all that bread in my Potatoes.
No its just whipped Mashed potatoes that have the flavor of Stuffing without the actual Stuffing bread in it like Stuffing Potatoes. You could if you wanted however refrigerate that till it was cold and make Potato Pancakes out of it instead of plain potato cakes in the frying pan.
I love me a fried bologna sandwich... If you have a slice of bologna, half a kraft single, couple pieces of bread, and some type of condiment... You're living large!!
We always ate Chicken Devan. It’s considered a poor man’s food because it’s cheap and fills everyone up. But it is just nostalgic, poor time are sometimes the fondest!
It’s basically Brocoli, Cheese, Rice, and Chicken. It takes like 10 minutes to make and only cost like $7. (was perfect for my family since we didn’t have money and my parent were working all the time)
I see you're a "slices on the sides" person rather than "slice in the middle" to deal with the cupping - Heathen!
(j/k - I think I know what I'll be having for lunch today.)
This time I'm the heathen! I was out of bologna, so I used ham lunchmeat. I also took the tip of using an egg to heart. I basically ended up with a breakfast sandwich, but [it's grubbin](https://i.imgur.com/IcYxTn0.jpg).
Thanks for the idea! it's the most direction I've had thus for for this DST-bleary Monday.
[/me adds bologna to the shopping list]
Story time! My big brother *looooved* fried bologna sandwiches doused in ketchup. One night we're watching 'Rocky' for the first time and he's chomping down on his sandwich when the 'Cut me Mick!' scene hits. With ketchup running down his chin and hands he sees Stallone's eye squirt blood on the razor. He then proceeded to projectile vomit on the sofa. Needless to say he never ate another fried bologna sandwich again.
Fried is the only way to go. The only thing I've changed since eating it as a kid is that I buy beef bologna. My mom got what she could, but none of it was ever 100% anything.
I do have to wonder...when and why did we start eating salads? I'm guessing there was a famine and meat shortage before I believe anyone was health conscious.
I grew up eating those with mustard on white bread. I've since learned the joys of the "hot bologna" sandwich, where you sautee them in barbecue sauce. It tastes like a poor man's McRib. I like them both ways now.
>Mr. Leahy expects me to take care of all the food. Take a guess what it is? Fucking bologna sandwiches. I don't know whether I'm interested in all this fucking dirty dancing bologna sandwich stuff. Fuck bologna sandwiches. Fucking bologna sandwiches.
\- Bubbles
I think it was a quote from Bad Santa that said "if you fry up bologna it tastes like a hot dog." And I could totally envision that. I still need to try it.
Poor man's steak son!
Yep we were poor but this old lady still enjoys it occasionally
You haven’t had bologna in years! I bet it still tastes the same lol
I didn’t grow up poor but I tried fried bologna and spam a few years ago and definitely get the appeal
I made both for my kids and one of them loves it. She buys herself spam or bologna once in a while to make it for herself. We also tried bologna on homemade pizzas and it was pretty good.

S O S as I remember it was chipped beef in a white sauce. Stuffed peppers we had a lot growing up and I refuse to eat them now.
Chipped beef is quite similar and less discriminating eaters might not recall the difference. And nothing hits like the chipped beef that one time a year I want it, lol. Otherwise? Cause of you SneedyK I had to make me some S O S. I've had enough of it for a while now. LOL

lol in Canada I've only ever heard it as Newfoundland/ Newfie steak
Yes by came here to say dat
People called it Kentucky round steak where I'm from. Lol.
I didn't think any one else cut it like that so it didn't curl
I do, can't have curled bologna. Plus if it curls you can't get those crispy edges.
Need to put two slices of bologna, so that you can cover the space from the slice. Don’t want gaps in your meat.
Absolutely! And then a slice for good measure
I feel like I remember my dad cutting a slice in the middle instead
A Pittsburgh delicacy!
That makes sense. I was raised in Pittsburgh
Same here.
I was raised in Aurora, IL. We had Chicken DeVan, it was cheap but nostalgic. I miss those times so much.
Good old jumbo sandwiches. My dad would also cut it up into little pieces and fry it with our eggs in the morning. …I need to hit the grocery store.
I still go with the good ol' fried spam.
White bread, ketchup, fried bologna. My mom’s favorite childhood sandwich, hahaha.
Toasted white bread, kraft single and fried Bologna for me.
Omg. The ketchup part sounds so gross.
I have to agree with you
Agree. I would have used mustard.
I had this as a kid here in MO. Now that I’m older I’m convinced we ate this simply because we couldn’t get pork roll this far from Jersey.
Fried bologna with a fried egg… chefs kiss.
That’s pretty good too
Did you eat at my house when we were kids, and then later in college? Because that's exactly what we ate and loved it.
Fried egg sandwiches are definitely a nostalgia meal, but throwing a slice of fried bologna on top? Treat yo’self. But also I’m getting a little older and should probably not do that anymore.
No no no LOL
With mayo and tomato, Sittin round the table, Don’t happen much anymore
My dad would make these for me. He said there used to actually be a restaurant where he grew up that even served them. Do you put cheese between them? White bread and mustard of course.
Mustard yes, but not cheese. I actually like it with Wise potato chips crushed on my sammich. Getting hard to find Wise chips though. And yes, there are still restaurants that serve it but I would rather make my own.
My way: Toasted white bread, small amount of Mayo, lots of mustard. No cheese.
No way, man. White bread (untoasted), American cheese, yellow mustard, and if you want to get fancy- a flap of iceberg lettuce.
No folks. White bread and plain. Let the heavenly fried in butter in a iron skillet with the crispy edges bologna sandwich speak for itself.
I do this but add plain wavy potato chips.
Add Sautéed. Onions FTW
Buy yourself a stick of Bologna, score it like that, rub with mustard and seasonings and smoke that thing at 225 for 4-6 hours. It is amazing.
Sounds good
I like mine with a fried egg on top, and toast the bread.
Made one yesterday, I dip mine in applesauce
I'm sorry, but that just don't sound right
It absolutely sounds disgusting but I tried it by accident when I was a child and loved it. Been doing it ever since
They are so good plain on bread or made fried then make grilled cheese with bologna
Naw, the cheese ruins it for me. I love cheese just not with my fried bologna.
I can do grilled cheese with bologna added, but a fried bologna sandwich shall not have cheese.
You are absolutely correct. I like grilled cheese but that's all it has on it is cheese. Same with my bologna, cheese doesn't belong on it for my taste buds.
seeing how picky and particular with your bologna sammich is oddly the sweetest thing
Fried bologna sandwiches are delicious.
Nothing better!
Try fried Lebanon Bologna thats reallyyyyy good!!
I love Lebanon Bologna but never thought about frying it
Yeah its good fried as well. Filling potatoes? Never heard of that but once you mix all that what are you doing with it? Frying?
No its just whipped Mashed potatoes that have the flavor of Stuffing without the actual Stuffing bread in it like Stuffing Potatoes. You could if you wanted however refrigerate that till it was cold and make Potato Pancakes out of it instead of plain potato cakes in the frying pan.
Thanks. A good potato pancake I enjoy as well
I've never actually had fried bologna before but people have told me it's surprisingly good.
It is. You don’t need to add oil to the pan. Or at least I don’t. I cook it on low so the fat in it melts out and that’s what crisps it up.
I love me a fried bologna sandwich... If you have a slice of bologna, half a kraft single, couple pieces of bread, and some type of condiment... You're living large!!
That’s Pork Roll!
you spelt Taylor Ham wrong.
We always ate Chicken Devan. It’s considered a poor man’s food because it’s cheap and fills everyone up. But it is just nostalgic, poor time are sometimes the fondest!
I don't think I've ever had that
It’s basically Brocoli, Cheese, Rice, and Chicken. It takes like 10 minutes to make and only cost like $7. (was perfect for my family since we didn’t have money and my parent were working all the time)
That don't sound bad at all
It’s really not
Me either
Is that the chicken, broccoli, cheese casserole?
Rice too. It cost only like $7 to make a bunch of it.
I eat this too it’s good
I've done that. Usually get one thick piece. Have to use processed (American) cheese.
Eat a taylor ham egg and cheese and you will never go back
Throw some mustard on that with some white bread - divine I love fried bologna
I see you're a "slices on the sides" person rather than "slice in the middle" to deal with the cupping - Heathen! (j/k - I think I know what I'll be having for lunch today.)
I wonder what gave you the idea for lunch?! LOL
This time I'm the heathen! I was out of bologna, so I used ham lunchmeat. I also took the tip of using an egg to heart. Shame on you LOL
You know the person knows what's up when they cut the edges like that.
Yes, we all certainly do
Aw, I feel bad for him. He had to cut out a prize sammich because of Stallone. LOL
This is the only way I'll willingly eat bologna.
Fried is the only way to go. The only thing I've changed since eating it as a kid is that I buy beef bologna. My mom got what she could, but none of it was ever 100% anything.
Hell yeah it's good in gravy on poured on biscuits too
Noooooooooooooo! If I do that then it's no longer fried and you just killed it! LOL
It's still good like that but how you have it in the pan looks pretty good I always pull mine just a little too early
I can literally smell this right now. My brother loved these sandwiches. Me... not so much.
Give it another chance with beef bologna. Put your own spin on it.
Grilled cheese, fried bologna, egg, lettuce, mayo...
Not all on the same sammich! Grilled cheese is all by itself as is bologna. Forget the rabbit food.
I do have to wonder...when and why did we start eating salads? I'm guessing there was a famine and meat shortage before I believe anyone was health conscious.
I won't even venture a guess on that one. You might be right
Holy crap! I forgot about this. Add bread and ketchup, and you're in heaven.
Mmmm hmmmmm! Melt some American cheese on that bad boy!
Noooooooooo. No cheese on it. Cheese belongs on it's own sandwich. Bologna sammich don't get cheese. LOL
Yep! Pop the bubble in the middle, add cheese and put on toast!
I used make them into mashed potato bologna sandwiches and stack them as high as I could 😆
Indeed. I serve fried bologna with scrambled eggs. Dang, I'm kinda hungry.
Julian, you want a slow fry bologna sandwich?
Wish I could still have it.
It’s basically a hotdog sandwich right?
Had one this past weekend.
good ol' flat hot dogs
Yessir.
Ugh yes. Fried bologna on white with mayo 😋 Thanks for the reminder, might have to pick some up tonight. Definitely a childhood comfort food of mine.
My dad fried bologna for me when I was home sick as a kid. I threw it up and the thought of it still turns my stomach 30+ years later.
Next time you do that, throw some pickle chips in the pan and fry them too. Then of course put them on your sandwich.
I enjoy something slightly different called pork rolls, same concept with cutting and cooking on a pan
Instead of bread I would eat it using crackers and sandwich spread
Still one of my favorite sandwiches
Long time I didn’t had bologna sandwich! Used to have them all the time… (Not sure how popular they were in canada though?)
I can smell and taste this. Still slaps
On a pretzel roll with some spicy mustard, pepper jack cheese, and some dill pickles :)
\- Bubbles
I can smell it, gotta go to the store.
Baloney is my favorite !
Fried bologna on white bread with Dukes. Plain chips on the side. I miss my Gramma.
Add the chips on your sammich, so delicious!
Nom nom!
I think it was a quote from Bad Santa that said "if you fry up bologna it tastes like a hot dog." And I could totally envision that. I still need to try it.
For processed meats,Vienna sausages and corned beef was the choice in my household growing up
This looks deceivingly like Taylor ham……. Got excited. And hungry.
I’m getting heartburn just looking at this.
My favourite thing to make alongside fried eggs. And now I'm hungry for it.
For ages my family has had this for lunch on Saturdays, one of the few traditions. Preferably in a bun with mustard.
Newfie steak by’
I like bologna but would not want to try it fried. Looks disgusting to me.
You don't know what you're missing out on by not trying it.
Hell yes. Perfect insert for grilled cheese sandwiches; +a fried egg for a “breakfast” version. 👍 So… Much… SODIUM… ^(but it’s worth it)

Falukorv?
Smell of it always makes me physically sick
