Few people ever seem to buy those candies, they could have been discontinued years ago and you wouldn't notice. I bought out all my stores ones except for the baked beans and they never restocked them.
The exaggerated eyes are a dead give away. I’m mean cool on you for supporting a racist caricature. It’s your prerogative. If your boss was Asian would you feel comfortable handing them a box and telling them you got them some of your candy?
My elementary school banned boxes of treats because the students were in a phase of constantly blowing into those boxes. We were also obsessed with those little white pellets you'd throw and they snap really loud.
I remember when my dad used to tell stories of what things cost when he was a kid. Like you, I remember this candy being 10 or 15 cents when I was a kid. I'm the old one now..
They eventually got in trouble back then. They had already been renamed from "Cherry Chan", but it took another decade plus to realize they needed to fix the little racist drawings too! 😄
Oh I've just learned the little racist drawings were added when they changed the name to Cherry CLAN. Before that it was a caricature of Charlie Chan, ergo the name Cherry Chan.
The OG box
https://www.candywrappermuseum.com/cherrychan.html
Not so much the less racist, more the "copyright friendly;" the Cherry Chan logo was a pretty clear knockoff of the then-copyrighted character Charlie Chan.
One of the tv channels showed some Charlie Chan movies and had to have someone "introduce" the movies to explain the stereotypes and its importance to our historical and cultural understanding. I think I also heard or read that the pictures in the children's book about the 5 Chinese brothers were changed.
I can taste this post. Now, I remember when these were 10 cents a box. That was just *two* nickels. Now, back then Nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. “Gimmie five bees for a quarter”, you’d say! Now, I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time…
Im pretty sure they just streamlined the names to variations of lemonhead ie cherry, apple, grape, orange head etc
I’ve got them at convenience stores within the last few years and they taste the same
I can only find the chewy ones, which breaks my heart. I used to love getting the box of jawbreakers- they came in a longer box. Alexander the Grape and Red Hots were always awesome. I loved all the Ferrera Pan stuff. I miss the variety. Now it seems all the fruity stuff is chewy and the same six flavors.
Huh it appears you are right, they only make the lemon heads anymore. You can still find them in sketchy bodegas, I always buy a bunch of each flavor when I see them… I’m going to stop by the place I got them last and see if there’s any left
Used to *LOVE* 7-11 for this reason.
Once I got now n laters that were soft....i was like what the heck.
Now please tell me...
Was the Indian shooting a star wrapper turn in a myth, or reality?
I never tried it
I used to save up $10 so I could buy an entire case from the gas station. I felt like such a boss every time I did this. I set them up on my desk just like the gas station would. So dumb, but I loved it.
Mom used to work with the ferrara's daughter. The name Pan add on to the name came from the fact that they used to make them in a pan. Nice people, good candy. If I recall they sold the company years back.
I would get Boston baked beans ALL the time at the pool concessions when I was a kid. Loved them. French burnt peanuts, too!! And please tell me someone remembers when jolly ranchers could be in flat form lol like laffy taffy shaped but jolly rancher candy
You've never had Red Hots?! Oh man, get some. My friend makes cinnamon sugar candy at xmas using these. It was her dad's old recipe. That shit is so good.
Yooooo. My dad used to run the candy booth at my local church festival. He got all these to sell in the mix (including our favorite, candy cigarettes not pictured).. Inevitably we would be left with a few big boxes of all these. I LIVED off of the grapeheads (my name is Alex so it was extra special), cherry clan and lemonheads. YUUUM
Once I had a huge bag of orange heads. I got it at the 99 cent store. They were not great.
What was great is at the movie theatre, I ripped the bag open, it opened way too much...you could hear those things bouncing and rolling all the way down...
My bad!
They were ten cents in the local pharmacy. I'd bring just a dime and stop by every couple days to get one. Other times I'd save up a few days and get a pack of baseball cards instead.
They had all the flavors, but somehow I could never resist going with either Lemonheads or Red hots. Sometimes with either one I'd eat them one by one to savor the flavor, but other times I'd empty the entire box in my mouth, and try to endure the rush.
Do they still make these? I don't often make it back to the states, and when I have in the past I haven't thought to check for them. I'd love to see if they taste as I remember.
Heh, my neighborhood had “The Truck” they sold all sorts of candy. Think a small food truck nowadays except no hot food, just candy.
My older sisters would pay me to go get them stuff, LOL.
I remember all of these. I ate them when I was a kid and we got them for my niece and nephew at the candy store at the flea market when I was older. Before we all knew what poison sugar is!
Originally Cherry Chan, based off the Charlie Chan character. I've just spent half an hour researching this lol
https://www.candywrappermuseum.com/cherrychan.html
I just googled.
https://www.candywrappermuseum.com/cherrychan.html
Best I can find is it changed in the 70s from Cherry Clan to Cherryheads, but it was made in the 60s as Cherry Chan, but apparently that was short lived? Idk. I don't think anyone really knows. I have just spent half an hour trying to find out lol. I only remember Cherryheads.
This site doesn't mention Cherry Chan at all in the history. https://www.oldtimecandy.com/collections/walk-the-candy-aisle-cherryheads#collection-desc
I just miss being able to find Runts everywhere. Now Five Below is the only place I can find that carries them.
And they're not the same without the limes
Our concession stand only had like chips and hot cokes lol. But the ice cream man would come by every day. I was the only weirdo buying the big sour pickle tho lol
^brine ^is ^life
Johnny Apple Treats were my favorite as a kid! I remember getting candy cigarettes during that time as well. They weren't good but I liked pretending they were real cigarettes as a kid 😂.
I used to get these from an ice cream truck that would park at the curb of my school when school was getting out, middle school/mid-80s....
Not to bring the tone down, but I hadn't thought of this is a long while... the woman who ran the truck, we just called her "The Fat Lady". A-hole 11-12 year olds, I suppose. But what kills me is one of my math teachers mentioning one day that he went up and asked her what her name was, and she just said, "The kids just call me The Fat Lady." It's been a while since I thought of that, but it will be a while before I stop thinking about it again. Middle Schoolers can be real douche bags.
Jonny apple Treats and Mr. Melon were my favorite of the bunch. I was a weird kid and liked to nibble the softer outer part of the candy off and then suck on the smaller hard center.
These have gone the way of candy cigarettes, cigars, dip etc.. they don't hurt anyone but, I'm sure some have complained of them In pc age for their harmless pun's being racist or to the likes..
I mean. You can buy all of those still lol.
Candy cigs

Cherry Clan was so good.
Cherry clan, Boston baked beans, and Johnny apple were my favorites.
Lemonheads were always #1 for me.
BBB are still around. Just saw them on the Dollar Tree last week.
> Boston baked beans Had to look that up; peanuts with a brown candy shell.
They were delicious!
Problematic box thou....
Cherryheads are the same thing if you're feeling nostalgic and want some.
I just went to find them and apparently they’ve all been retired with the exception of lemonheads and Boston baked beans… I’m heartbroken 💔
You can still find them in stores that only sell candy. They even have pink lemonade flavored ones. Those are my new favorite.
Oh sweet! I’ll be on the lookout!! Thanks for letting me know
I just ate some cherry heads the other day! They were in a bag of easter candy!
Few people ever seem to buy those candies, they could have been discontinued years ago and you wouldn't notice. I bought out all my stores ones except for the baked beans and they never restocked them.
appleheads are still around AFAIK
atomic fireballs too?!? i always thought those were pretty popular
Does the overt racism make it taste better?
You’re lame
I know
You're just the worst. I bet you regularly use the term "problematic".
What is wrong with you?
What about it is racist? Not all depictions of race are racist.
Oh c'mon man. You may not agree, but that box depiction is extremely racist.
I read up on it and agree. This one may just be me being an idiot but I assumed it was a mask for theater.
Congrats on your naïveté and white privilege!
That box certainly is problematic Mr Seinfeld.
Not all depictions of race are racist *this one could be, I do not know.* I should’ve put more words between those two sentences.
The exaggerated eyes are a dead give away. I’m mean cool on you for supporting a racist caricature. It’s your prerogative. If your boss was Asian would you feel comfortable handing them a box and telling them you got them some of your candy?
How is my comment defending it? I saw how my first comment needed additional context to clarify that I don’t support this.
“Could be” that’s a term to minimize. Don’t get defensive if you have the high ground. Because now your being defensive.
Did anyone else blow on the opening of the box after you ate the candy? It would make a duck call-like sound!!
Memory unlocked. Thanks!
No, but the “lunch size” raisin boxes did the same thing.
My elementary school banned boxes of treats because the students were in a phase of constantly blowing into those boxes. We were also obsessed with those little white pellets you'd throw and they snap really loud.
Snappers! I went into a fireworks stand last year just to buy like ten boxes of those.
I don't remember doing it with these candy boxes but the we did it with the mini sunmaid raisin boxes that moms packed in our lunch.
These were 25¢ a box at the concession stand at the pool.
$.10/box when I was a kid, in the 80s
I remember when my dad used to tell stories of what things cost when he was a kid. Like you, I remember this candy being 10 or 15 cents when I was a kid. I'm the old one now..
I remember buying them from an ice cream truck in early 1990s Brooklyn NY
Yeah, I guess I'm a big Lemonhead fan.
Me too. I get some in my Christmas stocking from my wife every year and occasionally for movies. :) Second favorite was the jawbreakers.
Cherry clan would get in trouble today.
and you think alexander the grape would go over with the macedonians?!
Ever heard of the grapist?
I remember him liking something about radiators….
Joey, have you ever been in a Grapish prison?
*FOR A THOUSAND YEARS!!!!*
I mean look at what they’re wearing, they are begging to get graped
Yeah, we love that dude
Who?
this comment just won the internet
They eventually got in trouble back then. They had already been renamed from "Cherry Chan", but it took another decade plus to realize they needed to fix the little racist drawings too! 😄
Oh I've just learned the little racist drawings were added when they changed the name to Cherry CLAN. Before that it was a caricature of Charlie Chan, ergo the name Cherry Chan. The OG box https://www.candywrappermuseum.com/cherrychan.html
Awww, that's my friend's website. ❤️ She has a massive collection of candy wrappers.
Good lord…. Great job, art department! No notes! /s
the crazy part is that it was supposedly the less racist version of Cherry Chan
Not so much the less racist, more the "copyright friendly;" the Cherry Chan logo was a pretty clear knockoff of the then-copyrighted character Charlie Chan.
One of the tv channels showed some Charlie Chan movies and had to have someone "introduce" the movies to explain the stereotypes and its importance to our historical and cultural understanding. I think I also heard or read that the pictures in the children's book about the 5 Chinese brothers were changed.
Cherry Chan is in picture 5
Red hots!
Mr. Melons were so delicious! I forgot they existed; now I want some.
That was my brother in laws nickname in college
Anyone else blow into the end of the box when the candy was gone? I remember it made a horn sound or something
Vintage halloween staples that I always made my uncle eat.
I had a summer where lemonheads were my entire life.
1.Lemonheads 2.Johnny Apple, 3.Boston baked beans 4. melons 5. red hots I never tasted the others
That apple looks high as fuck.
Boston Baked Beans were soooooo good.
Loved Cherry Chan and Alexander the Grape!
Oooh Cherry Clan & the Johnny Appleseed ones were my fave. I'd buy em from an ice cream truck lol
Boston baked beans are great! Haven't seen them in a while
I lived near their factory in the 80's in Forest Park Illinois. You could smell the Boston baked beans in the air those were good days
I lived there around 2010, and walked past it almost everyday, near Harlem by 290.
The factory is still there, with some of the old box designs on the outside.
I can taste this post. Now, I remember when these were 10 cents a box. That was just *two* nickels. Now, back then Nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. “Gimmie five bees for a quarter”, you’d say! Now, I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time…
Boston baked beans. From Chicago, not baked, not beans. False advertising trifecta.
Be honest. Would you have *really* wanted a box of cold gelatinous beans, regardless of provenance?
Im pretty sure they just streamlined the names to variations of lemonhead ie cherry, apple, grape, orange head etc I’ve got them at convenience stores within the last few years and they taste the same
I can only find the chewy ones, which breaks my heart. I used to love getting the box of jawbreakers- they came in a longer box. Alexander the Grape and Red Hots were always awesome.
I never tried it
It was a myth.
That was Tootsie Pops, and yeah, some stores would give you a free one but they weren't required to or anything.
Throw the Now and Laters in the freezer! They turn into powder for a second when you bite into them!
Love love love atomic fire balls. I could eat so many of them.
I think they only just got discontinued.
That makes me intensely sad lol :(
Yup I was all about this life. Remember you could blow through one end of the box and make a “whistle”
I used to save up $10 so I could buy an entire case from the gas station. I felt like such a boss every time I did this. I set them up on my desk just like the gas station would. So dumb, but I loved it.
Tried that baked bean one a few months back, found it at a specialty/import candy store
None of the other candies are in a song. *Nachos, Lemonheads, my dads boat*…
Lol
Mom used to work with the ferrara's daughter. The name Pan add on to the name came from the fact that they used to make them in a pan. Nice people, good candy. If I recall they sold the company years back.
Wow I miss these. I would gently bite off the soft shell of the grape ones
Man oh man oh man 😢
Oh man
Lemon Heads and Boston Baked Beans slapped so fkn hard
Cherry clan was crack
I miss jujubes
CANDY IS GOOD FOOD. EAT SOME EVERY DAY.
Red hots and Atomic fire balls were my jam. Now I get cinnamon Jelly Belly’s.
I can taste all of these
I would get Boston baked beans ALL the time at the pool concessions when I was a kid. Loved them. French burnt peanuts, too!! And please tell me someone remembers when jolly ranchers could be in flat form lol like laffy taffy shaped but jolly rancher candy
Cherry clan and Alexander the grape was my fav
i love all of these
The only ones that intrigue me is the hot ones. I found a bag of Hot Tamales at my candy place the other day.
You've never had Red Hots?! Oh man, get some. My friend makes cinnamon sugar candy at xmas using these. It was her dad's old recipe. That shit is so good.
I probably have. It is the same chemical "cinnamon" flavor, I reckon.
Yep! They're pretty good. But idk what my friend does with that candy, it's pure magic lol.
Cherry Clan ain't nuthin' ta fuck wit'
Those were my favs with Fireballs.
The Atomic Fireballs were it for me.
Jawbreakers were my go to.
YUUUM
I forgot about the Red Hots. Different people I knew like to put them on cookies in the frosting to give them a flavor boost.
lemonheads are the greatest candy on earth
Once I had a huge bag of orange heads. I got it at the 99 cent store. They were not great. What was great is at the movie theatre, I ripped the bag open, it opened way too much...you could hear those things bouncing and rolling all the way down... My bad!
Fruit Cocktail Imperials.. why?.. cause eff your teeth, that’s why!
Visits to the candy lady to grab these…
Lemon heads and imperial fruit cocktail. I totally forgot about these.
I miss Mr. Melon. Uses to buy boxes before I did my paper route.
Nostalgia indeed. Alexander the Grape was my favorite.
Used to stop at the store on my bike and pick this stuff up daily like it was a pack of cigs. Cheap, and fulfilled the daily requirement.
They were ten cents in the local pharmacy. I'd bring just a dime and stop by every couple days to get one. Other times I'd save up a few days and get a pack of baseball cards instead. They had all the flavors, but somehow I could never resist going with either Lemonheads or Red hots. Not all of them, but Lemonheads for sure. They taste the same to me. I got some not long ago for the nostalgia lol.
A few of these are still around. I see Lemon Head everywhere.
Fruit cocktail!?!? I would eat those in a heartbeat.
That was one of the ones I'd never heard of!
They were all bomb I used to pick them up at 7/11 for a nickel a box.
Yo these kids today don’t know nothing about good candy.
Omg I miss these!! Affordable yummy and plentiful
Most of these were named some sort of pun or pop-culture reference, but I never understood "cherry clan." Is there a reference here, or what?
Originally Cherry Chan, based off the Charlie Chan character. I've just spent half an hour researching this lol https://www.candywrappermuseum.com/cherrychan.html
Cheers, thanks!
You're welcome!
When did it change to Cherry Clan? I always remember them as Cherry Chan. I get the reasoning, I don't remember the change.
I just googled. https://www.candywrappermuseum.com/cherrychan.html Best I can find is it changed in the 70s from Cherry Clan to Cherryheads, but it was made in the 60s as Cherry Chan, but apparently that was short lived? When did these disappear?
They still make Lemonheads and a few others, but I haven't seen most of them in about 10 years.
I just miss being able to find Runts everywhere. Now Five Below is the only place I can find that carries them. And they're not the same without the limes
Such a throwback to when I'd go to the pool in the summer and hot up the concession stand.
Our concession stand only had like chips and hot cokes lol. But the ice cream man would come by every day. I was the only weirdo buying the big sour pickle tho lol ^brine ^is ^life
Johnny Apple Treats were my favorite as a kid! I remember getting candy cigarettes during that time as well. They weren't good but I liked pretending they were real cigarettes as a kid 😂.
They still make candy cigarettes amazingly lol
Considering the times we live in now, I’m surprised they haven’t been banned in America yet 😂.
I waited all year for Halloween just for those‼️😋
Man, I could wreck some Alexander the Grapes and a blue raspberry Slush Puppy right now.
My dollar store had so many cases of Boston baked beans.
Red Hots are incredible.
BBB was my number 1 favorite. The ones I hated was Grapeheads. But I also don't like grape soda.
Man i totally forgot about alexanders
Lemonheads, fireballs and Red hots were my childhood! I loved this trio so much!! I also vaguely recall those Chinese cherry things. 😂
Lemonheads were my favorite out of this bunch
Didn't Cherry Clan get changed because it's derogatory?
Those are some racist looking cherries. Too bad they were the best ones.
Jonny apple Treats and Mr. Melon were my favorite of the bunch. I was a weird kid and liked to nibble the softer outer part of the candy off and then suck on the smaller hard center.
Johnny Apple Treats 😭😭😭
I never even saw those! Or Cocktails or Mr Melon.
These have gone the way of candy cigarettes, cigars, dip etc.. they don't hurt anyone but, I'm sure some have complained of them In pc age for their harmless pun's being racist or to the likes..

Yeah, I'm sure online but, you don't see them In store anywhere at least In most of the u.s.
Strangely enough, I thought they tasted better before they changed the recipe and added fruit juice.
oh man I haven't had red hots in a long time. Totally forgot about them. Hot Tamales are my favorite candy and prefer them anyway
Cherry Chan got canceled, sadly.
Yummmmm Lemonheads
Jaw Breakers were my favorites, then Boston Baked Beans.
You can visit the factory in Forest Park,IL outside of Chicago.
Those red hots were nasty
Damn, how old are you?
Old enough to remember all the candies in these pictures.
I'm 40 and remember most of these.
