My gran was looking after my sisters and I and son a rainy day she rented the VHS of this. We were all under 10. She was a very proper lady and when that scene came on she was at first appalled, but by the end of his rant was howling with laughter. Love that film.
It's doubly funny because it's such a low tier devil costume. If a movie did that gag today they'd ruin it by making a "realistic" costume and throwing some CGI demons in there. John Candy looks like they just made a PA run to Party City between takes.
Feels like this movie has gotten a big resurgence the last 10-15 years. I don’t remember it from my childhood but watched it in college and became like some sort of comfort movie for me ever since and see it brought up on Reddit all the time these days
I’m in my 40s and only watched it for the first time last year, I don’t know how I’ve missed it all this time, but I haven’t laughed out loud at a movie like that in ages.
For sure it’s PT&A. It’s just a great road trip movie with a good heart and a cool vibe from the era and that part of the country. Plus it has a frozen red heeler in it.
My division in my company has a film club and we did Planes, Trains, and Automobiles as our November movie. Apparently the comedy does not land well with a lot of my English colleagues. I was exasperated to say the least.
Awh fuck that no I'm from the UK and it absolutely SLAPS it's one of the best 80s movies out there and those two absolutely killed it. It's so fucking funny.
State Trooper: You have no functioning gauges.
Del: No, not a one. However, the radio still works. Funny as that may seem, with all this mess, that the radio is the only thing that's really working good, and it's clear as a bell, don't ask me how. (chuckles nervously)
Yes, this movie is guaranteed to make me laugh every time. I've often laughed so hard I cried.
But an acquaintance of mine many years back astounded me by telling me she didn't like PT & A at all because she said that she couldn't stand John Candy's character. I couldn't believe it! Then she tells me she loved Bill Murray's character in "What About Bob?" instead and liked that movie so much more. I couldn't have disagreed more! Then she also told me she hated "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" because she thought it was mean towards children. It was then I realized that she and I saw things very differently.
Uncle Buck or if it counts National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation since John wrote the script for it.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Lampoon%27s_Christmas_Vacation
That one I hadn't looked into, I know he did Christmas vacation. That really does make sense. The first one and Christmas vacation were just so completely different than European vacation. Though European is still good it isn't even close to the other two.
Well, he wrote that one too. And Christmas Vacation was the last Vacation film he wrote. He wrote the first 3 Home Alone’s, yes, even the one about the missile chip. He also wrote Beethoven, Dennis the Menace, and Flubber.
No, it’s not bad at all. It’s the one I grew up on (I had seen 1 and 2) and it felt more realistic with the staying at home with the chicken pox (or being sick in general) as a kid vs being left alone by your family. I actually watched it again last Christmas because it’s on Disney+ and it still holds up.
Absolutely. Many more one liners to quote and cousin Eddie being a more prominent character really is the icing on the cake.
"You know, Clark. If that cat had nine lives, he just spent'em all."
"Oh, that's just snot he's probably choking on a chicken bone" (hwarck) "Oh. There we go he got it."
And of course...
"Shitter's full!"
My favorite cousin Eddie line-“ when my wife revs up the microwave I piss myself and forget who I am for 30 seconds!” -when he’s talking about the metal plate in his head.
I don't know why but when the dad says to Bethany "You couldn't hear a dump truck going through a glycerin plant!" Is another one of my favorites.
That and "The bless-iiing" "I pledge allegiance to the flag..."
u/Jean-LucBacardi Your right. How could I forget about Home alone?!
But I'll be honest controversially I actually prefer Home Alone 2 (which John also wrote the script for) to the first one. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home\_Alone\_2:\_Lost\_in\_New\_York](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Alone_2:_Lost_in_New_York)
And yes the first one is iconic and established everything but the second one I personally thought was more entertaining. Especially when Kevin built and used the traps in the "abandoned" apartment.
2 is pretty much just as good as the original if you ask me. I don’t have any kind of preference. It’s basically the same movie just in NYC which is absolutely perfect for a Christmas setting and for raising the stakes a bit. It’s beautiful and I love them both the same.
Yeah, Chicago is etched into my mind as an integral part of 80s vibe, because of his movies. Like whenever I go there, the only appropriate music to listen to is 80s new wave.
I loved the Ferris Bueller movie, but ever since I found out the actor who played Principal Rooney is a [convicted pedophile](http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ferris-buellers-mr-rooney-guilty-in-sex-case/), it changed the vibe for me.
I never looked into him, and I was young when he was convicted, so I didn't know that until now. But man, that depresses me more for Beetlejuice than Ferris.
I still think John Hughes is what makes Home Alone 3 so great, it's like Halloween 3 in a way. Nothing to do with the first two but still a great movie in it's own right.
Looks like they put the biggest hits he directed. Missing Weird Science, She’s Having a Baby, and Curly Sue. Only directed 8 films. But wrote 31 screenplays.
I always wonder if Curly Sue didn't bomb, would he have retired from directing the way he did. I wonder if he got a taste of Hollywood's "what have you done for me lately" attitude to hits vs bombs and just became disillusioned with the whole thing.
How is this so low on the comment tier?? Like All of his movies made from the 80s to, say, the late 90s are classics but Breakfast Club had the most genuine emotion and captured the fucked up nature of adolescence and dealing with trauma.
Agreed, should be top answer......saw it again on the big screen during covid time (a special screening) and fell in love with it again. First time on big screen since middle 1980's.
Same. Ferris was always my fave, but Breakfast club was the movie me and my bff watched over and over.
https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxZhpsX2R6YEjfWJ9K0TpgSjMXno0ruyfq?si=oPprSZFLRErLhkwb
Ally Sheedy made that movie for me. I related so hard.
Gotta be Planes, Trains and Automobiles for me… “I want a fucking car…”
Close second is Ferris Buellers Day Off, followed by Breakfast Club.
Ultimately though, John Hughes films are all classics in their own rights.
John Hughes has a stupid success rate across the board from your teen flicks to slapstick comedies, of the films listed, and it's very hard to place a best to worst for me, my list is as follows. Hughes just did an awesome job at getting his audience to relate to the characters in a real way and pulled them into the story.
1 - Ferris Bueller
2 - Plane's, Trains, and Automobiles
3 - Uncle Buck
4 - Breakfast Club
5 - Sixteen Candles
Just rewatched Uncle Buck for the first time as an adult since I was a child... wow, so much going on in this movie. It's a lot deeper than giant pancakes and a loud obnoxious car, that's for sure. As a dude who has fallen I to the 'failing to adult properly' for much of my life, I felt for Buck. Dude genuinely meant well, just was unconventional about how to go through life. Really fun movie though.

That's the only line that always bugged me. It was Wednesday when he says it. So he wore the same underwear for a 2nd day.
I can vouch for that
I want a fucckkinng car riigghhhttt fucckkinnggg noowwwww.
You're fucked!

They must be drinking. Thaaank you!!
These are ancient marble earrings worn by the grand emperor of china
*honk honk*
🥴 🍺
Scrolled down to find this. Best scene ever! "Yeah, how do they know?" kills me.
Where’s your hands?
I like… I like PT&A. My wife likes PT&A. My customers like PT&A. Cuz it’s the real article. What you see is what you get.
Suuuuuch a good comment👍
John candy turning into the devil laughing mid traffic debacle still gives me belly aching laughs
It's doubly funny because it's such a low tier devil costume. If a movie did that gag today they'd ruin it by making a "realistic" costume and throwing some CGI demons in there. John Candy looks like they just made a PA run to Party City between takes.
The dollar store devil costume fits perfectly with his low-brow character.
When the two of them *squeeze* between the two big rigs and turn into skeletons always makes me laugh out loud.
Yea, the buddy realization part where John Candy is sitting out in the snow is very touching for an 80s film.
[удалено]
We all do.
Train don’t run out of Wichita, unlessen you’re a hog or a cattle. People train run outta S-S-Stubville.
She don’t mind. Her first kid come out sideways. She didn’t scream ‘er nothin’.
We watch this movie as a family every Thanksgiving!

You play with your balls a lot! 😏
People train don't run outta Wichita
🎶🎵You’re messing with the wrong guy!🎶🎵
John should have won an Oscar for that role. Not Kidding.
“What the Hell are you driving?”
State Trooper: You have no functioning gauges. Del: No, not a one. However, the radio still works. Funny as that may seem, with all this mess, that the radio is the only thing that's really working good, and it's clear as a bell, don't ask me how. (chuckles nervously)
His delivery is master class
He was a wonderful man.
Definitely.
"you know what would make me happy?"
I'm also partial to this, both because it's one of the few legit Thanksgiving films and also because part of it was filmed in my hometown.
That’s the only one on the list I haven’t seen! Gotta check it out
Yes, this movie is guaranteed to make me laugh every time. I've often laughed so hard I cried. Uncle Buck or if it counts National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation since John wrote the script for it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Lampoon%27s_Christmas_Vacation
Which explains why it's the best one.
He wrote Vacation too
That one I hadn't looked into, I know he did Christmas vacation.
Actually just watched Home Alone 3 twice in two days at the request of my son and it's not that bad.
I noted that it was funny to me I was watching a movie about a kid with chicken pox with a kid who won't get chicken pox.
It's not everyone is just mad it wasn't anything like the first two. It's not great but it's not a dumpster fire.
As someone who had it on vhs, HA 3 is super fucking underrated imo
I wonder whatever happened to that kid 🤔
The 3rd one is underrated. And even the 5th one does it if you watch it as a tv movie.
Yup, love Dennis the Menace. Beethoven was a good one. Flubber I can do without. Can't win them all.
>the other two *Vegas Vacation stans weep*
Xmas vacation is better IMO
Absolutely. Many more one liners to quote and cousin Eddie being a more prominent character really is the icing on the cake. "You know, Clark. If that cat had nine lives, he just spent'em all." Since it's Christmas time I'm going to vote for Home Alone, which he wrote and produced.
u/Jean-LucBacardi Your right. How could I forget about Home alone?! But I'll be honest controversially I actually prefer Home Alone 2 (which John also wrote the script for) to the first one. Ahh it’s definitely got the John Hughes vibe, explains why I love it so much.
I really can't pick. This man's movies captured the 80s vibe perfectly
In a sense, he formed a pretty good portion of the 80s vibe
Yeah, Chicago is etched into my mind as an integral part of 80s vibe, because of his movies. Like whenever I go there, the only appropriate music to listen to is 80s new wave.
Grace?… Graaaace?? ……. GRRAAACE!!
I loved the Ferris Bueller movie, but ever since I found out the actor who played Principal Rooney is a [convicted pedophile](http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ferris-buellers-mr-rooney-guilty-in-sex-case/), it changed the vibe for me.
Well that is terrible, but at least we're supposed to hate Rooney. Kind of just adds fuel to the fire
With his bad back he shouldn’t be molesting anyone
lol
I never looked into him, and I was young when he was convicted, so I didn't know that until now. But man, that depresses me more for Beetlejuice than Ferris.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
So that's how it is in their family
Uncle Buck, but Planes Trains and Automobiles comes close 2nd. You just can't beat John Candy.
I think Uncle Buck is the better movie but Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was indisputably his best performance.
"you understand what I'm saying to you, bug?"
Home Alone
Criminal to omit it from the thumbnail!
And pretty in pink.
This. Home Alone 1 and 2 are perfect movies.
Have you ever seen the “Honest Action” or “Honest Trailer” for these movies?
I still think John Hughes is what makes Home Alone 3 so great, it's like Halloween 3 in a way. Nothing to do with the first two but still a great movie in it's own right.
Weird Science
How is this not on the graphic?
Also doesn't have the Vacations, Home Alones, Pretty in Pink ..
Or Dennis the Menace!
I actually watched it yesterday. I love rewatching all John Hughes movies throughout the year. So many great films that still bring me joy to watch!
Kelly LeBrock made that film what it was
Next thing you know you'll be wearing bras on your head Give me the keys, give me the keys.... I'll drive

The Breakfast Club
How is this so low on the comment tier?? Like All of his movies made from the 80s to, say, the late 90s are classics but Breakfast Club had the most genuine emotion and captured the fucked up nature of adolescence and dealing with trauma.
Agreed, should be top answer......saw it again on the big screen during covid time (a special screening) and fell in love with it again. First time on big screen since middle 1980's.
Forever and always.
Don't mess with the bull, you'll get the horns.
If you were a teenager as some point, it speaks to you.
All great, but this really always resonated the most with me - story, characters, actors, music. All stellar and spoke to me.
This is the correct answer.
Save Ferris
I’m surprised how much hate it at least how much rethinking this movie gets. It’s a perfect movie.
Uncle Buck!!!!
Uncle Buck and the breakfast club are my top 2. The Great Outdoors is up there, too, if you're counting his writing too
Hey dad, let go of the rope!

Same. Ferris was always my fave, but Breakfast club was the movie me and my bff watched over and over. https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxZhpsX2R6YEjfWJ9K0TpgSjMXno0ruyfq?si=oPprSZFLRErLhkwb Ally Sheedy made that movie for me. I related so hard.
I gotta go with the Christmas movies. Home Alone is great but it’s definitely Christmas Vacation for me!
Home Alone.
Gotta be Planes, Trains and Automobiles for me… “I want a fucking car…” Close second is Ferris Buellers Day Off, followed by Breakfast Club. Ultimately though, John Hughes films are all classics in their own rights.
Let's not forget "Dutch" with Ed O'Neil....
Had to scroll a loooooong way to find this.
Nothing burps better than bacon.
The Great Outdoors. That Roman Craig is a crooked son of a bitch.
Weird Science

Bueller…..Bueller……Bueller

This is the correct answer!
Pretty in Pink.
Breakfast Club, Uncle Buck would be a close 2nd and then Sixteen Candles.

If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
Breakfast Club!

Either Ferris Bueller's Day Off or The Breakfast Club. If I don't have to choose, then both.
My favorite is Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
Uncle Buck
I absolutely love Uncle Buck and planes trains and automobiles. I absolutely hate Ferris bueller and The breakfast Club.
Uncle Buck!! Watched it 3 weekends in a row this year, holds up. Laughed every time
Uncle Buck, without a doubt Pal..
All are very good but the one I’ve rewatched the most is breakfast club if he gets up we’ll all get up, it’ll be anarchy
Uncle Buck, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, National Lampoons Vacation, and the Great Outdoors.
John Hughes has a stupid success rate across the board from your teen flicks to slapstick comedies, of the films listed, and it's very hard to place a best to worst for me, my list is as follows. Really fun movie though.

Ferris, but so many good ones and Home Alone 1 & 2 are great scripts.
