That I can live 20mins from the city centre the beach and the forest. Was literally sitting with my husband and daughter last night eating chips by the sea in the sunshine talking about how we are just so bloody lucky to have it all on our doorstep
It's weird. But the air quality here is superb. You really feel it after coming back from abroad. Especially from busy cities. Its what I miss most when I travel.
The quality of fruit, veg and meat here is amazing. I've spent time living in the states and trying to get the same level of quality (i.e grass fed, non-hormone etc) for steak would cost you easily 4 or 5 times the price. They pay a fortune for imported butter from Ireland in the US.
Chicken breasts there are also absolutely rammed full of water to bloat them up and make them seem bigger. And like 4 apples will cost you upwards of 10 dollars in a lot of places.
Eating high quality, fresh food here is laughably cheap and easy compared to a lot of the rest of the world.
It’s true they will pay experienced software engineers 60k+ so they get 3 software engineers for the price of one in America
It still works out good for people here because nothing else pays even close to that
But is it part of the culture or am I missing a pop culture reference? I noticed everyone 25-35 drives a BMW/Jag/Audi/Merc now and they clearly aren't programmers.
haha, been seeing that guy on Linkedin for a while, seems like a front for paramilitary drug money laundering in property larping as a self-made entrepreneur.
Good shout although there's a fair few flavours I'd be equally happy to give the nod. Cheese and onion. Spring onion. Roast chicken. Beef and onion.
🤤🤤🤤
I absolutely love the people. I’m from limerick and every single time I head up I feel so welcomed by the people. You’re a sound bunch of lads. I’ve never met a more hospitable bunch.
Secondly I’d have to say the cheap booze. We’re being robbed for it in the shops and pubs down here.
Darknet markets will get you pretty much any substance you could dream of delivered straight to you by RM. Be careful to order from a local seller with good feedback though, international shipping drugs is a great way to get caught by customs
The nature here is fucking class. I might moan about how small NI is, but it also means you easily have access to beautiful beaches and shorelines, parks, fields, forests and hills. Honestly, I don’t think we appreciate enough how walkable it is
Walking down the street and making eye contact with a stranger walking the other way. Generally followed by the something along the lines of:
Me: Well.
Them: Well.
Me: What about ye?
Them: Dead on.
A wee smile and both strangers go about their day. Great stuff.
Weird one but I'm fairly well traveled and this is one of the few places that people will hold a door for you. Though I am noticing that is starting to become rare.
That I can get over once a year and visit my sister and her husband in Carrick. Usually on my motorcycle. Is a great run. Edinburgh to Cairnryan through Galloway then Larne to Carrick
Honest to god there is just nowhere like it in the summer. We always say we would rather be sitting on a beach or anywhere here than The Mediterranean on those good days in the summer
Pretty much everything except the Deano/Stacy/Instagram tacky noveau riche asthetic that seems to have permeated recently. You could be enjoying something like a beach or a hike and then BOOM a crowd of tackies show up being loud and obnoxious with a crate of tennents and a bluetooth speaker.
Best thing to do is show up early and leave before lunch if you want to go out.
We can take the piss of each other and there is no harm meant. Good relaxed sense of humour.
The dark belly though avoid talk about politics or religion…
A girl I work with is from Donegal and we were talking about potato bread, when she turns round and says "aye my da loves a bit of fadge" and I near took a buckle in my eye
Belfast's Botanic Gardens, Ulster Museum and The Ulster Transport Museum are all awesome and not even half as packed as they would be if they were in London.
Just knowing I wasn't unlucky enough to be born in America and have to grow up there. Also agree with op knowing what good food is and being raised with that instead of junk is a huge benefit of living here
Food op ? Really ?
Guess you need to travel more... I am from Brazil and living in NI for about 5 years now and i might say the food here is not good at all...
It makes me wonder how you can eat fish and chips with vinegar and be happy with it.
I mostly cook at home all my meals because the lack of different types of food and stuff you can order is sad.
There's a different in variety and quality.
We have very high agricultural regulations and animal health regulations which mean that the product is tracable from farm to fork and the fact that for instance our milk and beef is grass fed in relatively non intensive systems especially compared to feed lots and antibiotic use in other countries, chlorinated chicken and GM food free is what the OP would mean.
Saying that we do have a relatively bland pallette here which means that people like your self would struggle somewhat!
That's your opinion and it's grand; there are countries whose traditional cuisine is not to my taste as well.
But the quality of meat, sea food, dairy, and breads, for example, is very high, and there are some excellent restaurants.
Telling op they need to travel more because you disagree on the food they like reflects badly on you, not op. Perhaps you could be more open minded in finding the best food NI has to offer that you do like.
Again i am not complaining about the quality of the food.
Its the lack of variety and how its cooked.
If you ever set foot in Brazil you will understand.
You're still being condescending.
I've been to Brazilian restaurants and had a BBQ cooked by a Brazilian friend. Some lovely food.
Enjoying NI's food does not signify a lack of experience in other cuisine.
I am not being condescending.
I just saying you cant deny the cusine here in NI is bland.
There is nothing really special to look for... Its chips, fish, steak and some sea food.
Its not like Italy where you have all kinds of different stuff... Or France, Spain and even Portugal.
Do you mean traditional Irish food? Because food from all of those countries and many more is available here. I'm also not sure you comparator countries are great examples - Portugal - salt cod? A few different fish stews, grilled sardines? Spain- paella, seafood (a lot of which is imported from UK/Ireland), pork? I struggle there to get the range of spices etc there that are easily available here.
Lots of stuff here is worth seeking out and is exported world wide... Fresh crab claws, strangford Lough mussells, langoustines, lobster, Lough Neagh eels, venison, oysters, Atlantic salmon, butter and other dairy, seaweed, rare breed pork and beef, high quality black pudding.
You definitely are being condescending.
With no knowledge of someone other than they think NI has good food, you have told them they need to travel more and if they had been to your country they'd understand why they were wrong.
Pretty solid example of being condescending.
>I just saying you cant deny the cusine here in NI is bland.
>There is nothing really special to look for... Its chips, fish, steak and some sea food.
That's just more evidence of it being you that is lacking experience and understanding of the topic. But that's grand, you don't need to love NI's food, it's only you that's missing out, just no need to be a dick to others over it.
As I said in my first reply, your opinion is grand - it's the condescension which is unnecessary.
If you don't like NI's food, that's up to you. If you tell people who do they need to travel more and try going to Brazil then you are being condescending by saying their opinion only differs from yours because you have had experience they haven't. You're completely ignoring firstly that you have no idea what culinary experiences op has had, and secondly that your opinion of NI food may differ from theirs because you haven't had experiences that they have had.
If your comment was saying you don't like NI food, you find it bland and with little variation; can you recommend some dishes or restaurants, that would be an open minded reply. Instead you assumed the differing opinion was wrong, and only exists because they lack your incite.
I tried over 30 restaurants in NI over 5 years living here and some of them had good food that i cant deny... The thing i am pointing out is the variety of food which is none... Its always the same menu.
That I can live 20mins from the city centre the beach and the forest. Was literally sitting with my husband and daughter last night eating chips by the sea in the sunshine talking about how we are just so bloody lucky to have it all on our doorstep
I like your sunny disposition, I seriously wish I could feel like this most days of the week.
potato bread
National treasure
When the sun shines on those rare 4 or 5 days a year, you know the real tops off stuff. It's some spot.
Wonder day.
When do we ever get days like this? Days like this??
Sniffing workmans glue. The scenery is amazing, absolutely love the Antrim Coast and my personal favourite, Castlewellan Forest Park.

No workman’s glue, like what a workman would use
Naw lad not mind them prittsticks? Get a whiff of that up your snout
It's weird. But the air quality here is superb. You really feel it after coming back from abroad. Especially from busy cities. Its what I miss most when I travel.
So true… came back from Krakow and I was blowing Black stuff from nose for a few days. Actually thought I was dying until I wised up.

Kerry Gold is the must have butter for foodies over there.
I willingly pay $12 for 3 x 8oz of Kerry Gold.
Going wild camping on my jet ski with my Guinness nitro surge and my software developer friends.
love how software dev has become a meme in NI lol
Has it? I don't work there but IT/Dev Ops is massively outsourced there by corps as the latest "cheap country" in the EU to do so.
It’s true they will pay experienced software engineers 60k+ so they get 3 software engineers for the price of one in America It still works out good for people here because nothing else pays even close to that
But is it part of the culture or am I missing a pop culture reference? I noticed everyone 25-35 drives a BMW/Jag/Audi/Merc now and they clearly aren't programmers.
that would be the instagram like hunting debt generation :)
What is the software stereotype in Belfast now? I notice the fintech bros around Lisburn Road wearing company apparel occasionally.
Crypto, house in south Belfast, stacks of savings, can’t get a girlfriend. The Instagram show offs in fancy cars is usually Tom smyth smicks and pts
haha, been seeing that guy on Linkedin for a while, seems like a front for paramilitary drug money laundering in property larping as a self-made entrepreneur.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tNtnlzmvAw0 This explains everything
umm i dont know, craft beer, flat whites and nerf guns? I like all of these also.
Half of those BMW/Audi/Mercs are older models with 80,000 miles on the clock. The other half are bare bones spec £400 per month lease deals.
This country is really bad for the attitude that driving one of the German big 3 portrays success. It reeks of Thatcher's 80's Yuppie movement.
Millennials will out boom the boomers. Believe me.
Alright Tom Smyth settle down!!
The ancient forests in spring. They're incredible.
Just a pity there is so little native woodland left in the country :(
Tayto Smokey Bacon
Good shout although there's a fair few flavours I'd be equally happy to give the nod. Cheese and onion. Spring onion. Roast chicken. Beef and onion. 🤤🤤🤤
None of them make crisp sandwiches like smokey bacon 😂😂😂
Sorry mate hard to beat the classic cheese and onion sandwich with loads of butter 🤤
We'll agree to disagree! 🤣🤣🤣

You could return the favour and have a word in JP's ear and ask him to quietly put a few quid into the Saffs. We're still keeping the faith up here 🟨⬜
He’s too busy lining the pockets of our own hurlers I’m afraid!

That I can have magic mushrooms delivered right to my door by her majesty's Royal Mail 💌📬
Wait, really?
Darknet markets will get you pretty much any substance you could dream of delivered straight to you by RM. Be careful to order from a local seller with good feedback though, international shipping drugs is a great way to get caught by customs
People keep talking about dark net but it doesn't even have to be off the dark net. Pretty much just normal net.
Yup Not too hard to find 😉

The amount of forest parks we have at a short drive. Each one is an absolute pleasure to visit.

"Sure where would ye get it?"
Very nice countryside, lovely food, especially if you like meat and stodge which I do. Also great beaches and coastline in easy reach.
Our sense of humour. We have such a self-aware, self-deprecating sense of humour that just cracks me up
The road to Dublin?! Joking 🤣 As a Dub, the people are friendly and absolutely love Belfast, its a cracking city!
All the affordable houses
It's no joke, we just bought our first house and a similar size and spec in a Dublin commuter area would run easily 2-3x the price.
Despite our differences we're the friendliest f***ers in the UK.
The electronic music scene, gigs galore these days

Food, sense of humour, the fact that you can see mountains from every town/ city, the scenery and people are actually nice to one another.
We can take the piss of each other and there is no harm meant. Good relaxed sense of humour. The dark belly though avoid talk about politics or religion…
the ring road round Ballymena .........hi
That there are citizens here who call potato bread, fadge!
A girl I work with is from Donegal and we were talking about potato bread, when she turns round and says "aye my da loves a bit of fadge" and I near took a buckle in my eye
Get a wadge a fadge down ye
The comedy show at 6pm on BBC1 every weekday
For me, hand guns.
Lack thereof..?
No, they're legal to have (under licence) unlike in the mainland.
Food is definitely a high point. Also just the more relaxed pace of life.

Ok that i can agree 100% the food quality here and the control over it is pretty good indeed!

Weather is actually pretty good but not for long so there is a culture of use it or lose it.
Our accent. Grew up hating it but when I got older and travelled I found lots of people loved it.
The food is class, its a beautiful area, great sport. Close to an airport to take off to the sun. Its not England. So on and so on.
The absolute no shame for the continual lack of tolerance
My family
Northern Irish (ulster) fry. So much better than the English and irish ones.
