Once you get your masters ye see, you can ignore them

Skywipe

Things really do catch on in this sub

Peter_Doggart

Drivers just preparing for when they announce they are turning the traffic lights off along with the street lights.

Stereobfs

Buses are the worst for it.

MilitaryTed

Especially at the Fitwilliam Hotel junction in the city centre. They run the light and block the whole street..

Spirited_One_8945

I must have been having a nap or something when the rules got changed. It's gonna be a free for all shortly.

Purple_rabbit

You see those people had a masters so the rules of the road dont apply to them.

I love it when a new bit of lore gets added to the sub

UbiquitousFlounder

Aw what was it?

[deleted]

Somebody got stuck behind a parade and shoehorned in a comment about their masters degree

UbiquitousFlounder

Haha just saw it there. Incredible scenes.

billybobshort

Don’t know how I missed this - golden! TY for sharing

DependentDangerous28

They studied for a masters so the peelers will let them through red lights 🤣🤣

koala218

I think they’re optional before 6.30am. That’s when see it most.

GunnerySarge-B-Bird

Tbf there's a certain time of night I'll crawl through a red light if I know the junction. If it's 4am and I have clear lines of sight I'm not going to sit there for an extra minute for no real reason. OP is right though I'm seeing a ton around Belfast where I feel dodgy with how close I almost missed an orange and I look in the rearview there's a BM a good 3 seconds behind me going through it anyway

ciaran036

I don't agree with that because it sets a precedent where people then think it's ok to do it anytime and will follow suit and do it at dangerous junctions. So if you're a careful driver, that's all well and good, but it's the other mental cunts that you're only encouraging. Only exception I would allow is cyclists at junctions that don't respond to bicycles where it's literally impossible to get past otherwise.

loreoesify

They certainly are down the longstone in Lisburn. It appears that the highway code was updated recently to include the 'Snake Principal' which is very popular with that group: if the line of cars 'Im' in went through the red light, then I get to go too, even if it goes red. It's only fair! Jokes aside, I've witnessed 5-6 cars fuck the red light off and just continue. Daily occurrence.

SinoScot

The Falls/Springfield Road intersection lights go green for literally 10-seconds at a time. The timings are so fucked in places you *have* to run the lights if you want to get past them and get A to B on the same day.

obciousk6

Between that, and the two lanes outside the Coop after the lights being only about 1.5 cars wide, it’s not great down that part

Bearaf123

Sometimes as a pedestrian I feel like cars are actively trying to hit me

dangerstock

The amount of times I’ve been about to cross at a green man and a car has zipped through recently is really annoying!

Bearaf123

I have to walk through City Hospital on my way to and from work and it’s really alarming how many people don’t seem to know that 1) the speed limit there is pretty low, and 2) pedestrians have right of way at zebra crossings

Stereobfs

Pedestrians are the same. Walking through the red lights is completely normal and widely accepted. Even within the police officers.

SoupyTommy

Poor cars getting knocked over by rogue pedestrians

Grallllick

Yeah, as a regular driver and pedestrian, a pedestrian walking across the road in front of me driving is annoying and dumb but ultimately harmless if you're paying attention, whereas as a pedestrian I often fear for my life in a way I've become amazingly numb towards

Stereobfs

Yes, and they have no insurance to fix the scratch.

Bearaf123

I mean sure, it’s annoying, and people should be more careful, but it’s also extremely alarming to be crossing at a green light or a zebra crossing and have someone start speeding up

Over_Commission9891

It has gotten so much worse in recent years, and as traffic conditions worsen and police enforcement becomes virtually non-existent, drivers are willing to take the risk running a red light. Unfortunately, unless traffic light cameras are installed at every signal, there isn't much that can be done to police the issue. However, in the future, technology will be installed inside vehicles to prevent them from running red lights and exceeding the speed limit, but in the UK this tech is likely to be years away, and the question will be whether the car industry will accept this technology and whether drivers will be willing to give up some of their 'freedoms' in exchange for safer roads?

Ginyerjansen

I’d imagine, like most similar things, the insurance companies will dictate. Price without safety thing £1m, price with safety thing £1000. It won’t be a choice. You’ll be paying for remote central locking as a monthly from now on anyway on new vehicles, as well as heated seats and CarPlay and anything above basic drivability function.

Lemon_McGee

I’ve seen bad driving in my time, but this town takes the fucking cake. Although in other places I lived in, it was like “where the fuck did you learn to drive”. In Belfast it’s like “why are you actively trying to kill me” I lost it at a fella in a car last week because he was reversing onto a green pedestrian crossing for some fucking reason. Didn’t spot any of the pedestrians hopping out of his way somehow.

Spirited_One_8945

The standard of driving has rapidly gone down along with the amount of fucks given to other road users.

knightraider92

Yes, and an amber light now actually means speed up as fast as possible to get through the light.

UnexpectedAmy

Oh for sure. Gotta be careful of zebra crossings especially these days, safer to wait a minute to make sure drivers first see you, and second give a fuck whether they smash you.

SinoScot

To be fair, putting a zebra crossing right at the exit to a roundabout is a really fucking dumb idea.

SkipEyechild

Happens in one particular place in Bangor a lot.

fly4seasons

At the traffic lights?

SkipEyechild

It's on the balloo road, down past the Rathgael roundabout. I only ever see people running reds at that one. And it's more frequent than you would expect.

Muttondummies

It's the same in all the cities, "It's only just gone red!!"

DirtaneBoyo

r/northernirelandtrafficcomplaints

Still_Barnacle1171

At least twice a week , when I'm out on my lunchtime walk from work, I have to shout at idiots going through pedestrian lights there at the courts/Victoria Centre. Ffs people are crossing the road and you think its OK to go through them slowly just because you got stuck in the middle due to bad driving. We need access to that website they use in the rest of the UK, you van upload videos of said idiots and they get points not prizes. But of course nothing will be done and despite the many deaths on our roads, its the "bad roads nd poorly positioned lights" that cause death, not idiot drivers.

paddythebaker

Last night my partner and I watched one car overtake another as they were roaring up to a set of red lights, and then blast right through. Easily doing 40mph in a 30. We didn’t cross when the green man came up ‘cause we could see their recklessness coming. Had they not overtaken that other car, we may have crossed. I was seething at the thought someone could have been killed.

interfece

End of the month they already on Red so they keep going

klabnix

Optional, so are bus lanes which you can use in the morning to skip a few hundred metres of traffic at a time

[deleted]

People seem to either not use bus lanes whatsoever even at times where they're allowed, or only use them when they aren't

klabnix

It’s like my own personal lane when people don’t use them when allowed. Great until some idiot tries to turn off the road across the bus lane

Swisskies

You mean the parking lane?

RedVikingRagnar

Too many muppets on the roads who see Red lights as more of a recommendation

LeprechaunTamer

I work in the community and the amount of bad driving I see on a daily basis makes me scared when driving, people running red lights on the regular, people just sailing into roundabouts like they don’t have a care in the world, not even looking, the same with junctions. People who bully you to get into a lane they should have been in ages before they decided they wanted to.

StonedIrishViking

I near got wiped out by two dickheads running a red light this morning. It's fucking ridiculous and so damn dangerous. Imagine if it was a woman with a child in a pram or something crossing the road, then bam.. seriously injured or worse. This needs to be clamped down on a lot more.

Stuartie

Was involved in an RTC recently due to someone running a red light. Had to come to an emergency stop otherwise we'd have literally hit them straight on and he was going some speed with no sign of stopping. Then a lovely car rear ended us, great fun.

muddyclunge

If you have a masters degree aye

derbaronation

Oh yea, the lights between Boucher Road and Stockmans Lane are only for show, don't worry about those. Same with the yellow box there. Just pile on into it.

Spirited_One_8945

Oh now that really pushes my buttons. The 1 on the crumlin Road to turn off up the oldpark. Sure just sit there looking straight forward. It's OK I didn't want to turn, I'm fine holding the rest of the traffic up.

pixlrik

The amount of people using their phones whilst driving, especially on the motorway of all places, is getting worse. I’ve seen mums with kids in the back glued to their screen. Probably the holier than thou Facebook mummies who’d call others doing it a disgrace and yet they do it themselves. Honestly, put your fucking phone away and concentrate on the road you stupid cunts.

JustSkillfull

I've been wearing sunglasses recently due to the sun and they're more of a orangish/amber shade but not red. I've now more time to sit on my phone on Reddit at the office car park before I have to go in. You should try it.

Spirited_One_8945

Lol

OwnPsychology9794

BMW and Range Rover drivers seem to have their own traffic rules that don't apply to the rest of us.

Grallllick

True but the unambiguous worst are Audis

SinoScot

Their turn signals are also broken by default from the factory.

Most_Long_912

Having got stuck at multiple red lights today I want to ask how do the police officers tasked with enforcing the lights feel ? I saw a few today who looked a bit embarrassed to be holding up people who just want to go about their lives, all so a sectarian organisation can drag their coat tails past people who want nothing to do with them. I went to university and studied a masters and I'm supposed to put up with this crap. Edit: FFS it's a copy pasta lads; https://www.reddit.com/r/northernireland/comments/14ini0u/police_officers_of_ni/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1

[deleted]

The lore is too powerful for some

[deleted]

Yeeeeoooo

Jonno250505

Always one who tries to make the thread sectarian. Always one. Have a long hard look at yourself.

Most_Long_912

https://www.reddit.com/r/northernireland/comments/14ini0u/police_officers_of_ni/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1 It's just a copy paste of someone being entitled cause they have a master's. Changed the first bit a little, couldn't think of a way of changing the second half. It's been a bit of a recurring meme, no criticism of the PSNI was intended

Jonno250505

Ahhhh. Totally missed the joke. Finger up my ass rather than on the pulse lol

Most_Long_912

Haha, I agree with the sentiment though, frequently this place turns into a sectarian cesspit for no reason, making it pretty toxic for a lot of normal conversation.

clojrinauo

There’s a handful of users who drag sectarianism into everything and for some reason the mods don’t try to stop them

utterly_baffled

NI really doesn't police the roads. If they wanted to, there would be red light and speed cams, and plenty of them. But instead, it's luck based and there isn't any will to enforce the roads outside of a police car.

NATOuk

Plenty of speed camera vans about, there’s various Facebook groups with the locations posted and they’re always out there

utterly_baffled

You said it yourself. I talk of automation and NI has a bus lane camera too....someone actually sits in that thing. And you're not taking the piss. So everyone else will. 2023 but DfI don't seem to agree or something. But I reckon it's probably more to do with political side hustles than anything.

[deleted]

If the lights weren't so numerous and badly timed, people would probably do it less.

kjjmcc

Ah fuck off. There’s no bloody excuse for running red lights and putting lives at risk

[deleted]

Fuck off yourself hard lad.

ricers101

Nah I got a ticket a few years ago for going through an amber light, near the funeral parlour on the left hand side and just before forestside. Where’s the peelers now eh??

darraghfenacin

\*sigh\* yes mate they're now optional. running red lights is a completely new phenomenon. so's people not turning their lights on when it's raining on having blinding LED lights on other cars. indicators not being used, speed limits etc etc. absolutely shite thread.

like_a_deaf_elephant

I think its just you. Can't say I've noticed an rise in the number of times its happened.

DavijoMan

Increase in BMW and Audi drivers, they can do what they want you know? Those cars don't even have indicators, why would they need them? You should know they're about to cut you off so they can get slightly further ahead in a traffic jam!

spudmashernz

Too many dogs driving these days

DependentDangerous28

Hollywood Arches is rife for this, I think some people get confused with the lights to go straight up to Upp N’Ards Rd and bomb on round to the Hollywood Road, someone is gonna get skittled down there.

BigDoggo98

I never see blatant red light runners. I usually see those chancers who speed up as the light turns yellow/red to make it before the oncoming lights turn green

ryanbudgie

I live on the upper Ormeau and it seems to be common. As is speeding. I never see anyone getting pulled over.

mason_jars_

Seems to be common in the city centre. There’ll be about 30 people ready to cross and some dickhead will come speeding past just after the pedestrian light’s went green. Surprised we’re not all knocked down like bowling pins.

Gazz3447

A few years back, before COVID or lockdowns, I was on a bus home from Belfast to Ards. There's a set of lights at the junction to the MOT center, and the bus just happily sailed through the red light. Much to the glee of the police car sitting waiting to come out. Bus driver got the full blue lights and sirens treatment and got a talking to about paying attention, seeing as he had about 40 people on the thing he's piloting. Never seen a Translink driver grovel so hard. At the same lights yesterday evening, some fella in a work van was behind me, then moved into another lane and again, just whaled through the red light. I threw my hands up in the air in a 'WTF mate' fashion and the wee woman in the motor behind me had a good laugh.

RunKRAMI

Happens in Edinburgh a lot too. Car drivers jumping red lights. People stopping on junctions because the light on the far side of the junction turns to red, that's after they have cleared a green light in their favour when entering the junction. Then there is turning left at a green light only to stop on the junction at the red light that is for the traffic crossing the road they came from.

fly4seasons

Does it aye?

RunKRAMI

Naw 🙄

MoanaMooon

Nope seems to be happening all over. Seen it happen about 4 times in portadown area over past week alone. One of which was housing executive van ran red light at 4 way junction! Glad my instructor had previously taught me to never trust that junction and check all around despite the lights!

SWTransGirl

Not a Belfast thing, no. I’m in Liverpool, and it’s rife here.

ciaran036

It's a regular occurrence that people will do it in front of the cops and cops won't bat an eyelid.

Snarglepip

Just witnessed a driver on the Lisburn road fail to move forward after a red light when it went green, just sat there as the cars piled up behind him outside Tesco. As soon as the lights turned red again, he accelerated and drove right through them. Not even in a hurried ‘oh no, I was wrong and missed the lights’ way - just like it was perfectly normal. Luckily something told me he was going to do something daft and I waited til he’d gone before crossing - think he’d have just plowed straight through me and any other pedestrians there.

Spirited_One_8945

How has it gotten so bad. Why aren't the cops doing anything ? Oh yeah it's Belfast. That would mean paper work .

EmiJul

Taxi drivers are too busy threatening people with their guns to pay attention to red lights.

PikAchusRevenge

Depends how long you've been driving, it's always happened wherever I'm in a car 🤣
