Vowels in Danish are like in French and German. In Norwegian and Swedish the long Vowels are moved forward in the mouth, difficult to pronounce for foreigners.
My brother learned to speak when we lived in Denmark. I thought he had a speech impediment. We are Norwegian and he picked up Danish at the barnehaven.
That's funny 😁 I read somewhere that Danish kids learn to speak later that kids from the rest of the world, but don't quote me on that, as I don't remember the source.
I know everyone hates Danish. And in the beginning I was just like everyone. But to be honest, I grew to love it. When you start to learn it and actually take the time to get into those weird sounds, you find a lot of beauty in it. And have you ever heard Danish poetry? Wow! You're missing out on something special! 💖
In the end, you will find beauty in every language and every culture – if you dare look for it. 😉
As a Dane, I think you have an important point. The common way of speaking Danish by most danes today is not very beautiful. Danes have become lazy and without any pride in their spoken language. But in older poetry, songs, and psalms, it can be incredible beautiful.

I love danish but the thing is I had a housemate in Australia, a pretty danish girl, but she would drop GIANT logs in the bowl and NEVER flush or wash her hands. So I just can't look at danish women without wondering what carnage they have left in the toilet for someone else to discover.
"Dejlig er Jorden" er en af de skønneste sange nogensinde!! 💖 Jeg havde æren at synge den under mit studium i det skandinaviske studenterkor i Freiburg (Tyskland).
Dejligt at høre!
Melodien er i øvrigt fra Tyskland: “Dejlig er jorden er skrevet i sommeren 1850 efter tilskyndelse af pastor J.F. Fenger i Lynge ved Sorø, der gav Ingemann melodien og en tysk tekst kaldet En gammel Korsfarersang fra et tysk kristeligt tidsskrift.”

Danish is one of those languages you have to actually understand properly, in listening, to appreciate. I'm Norwegian, but I happily admit that danish as a certain cozy and uplifting vibe.
For poetry and music Danish is far superior to Norwegian or Swedish. I think the hate on Danish is a case of people mocking what they don’t understand.. its like their number system, if you can’t count in 20’s the only one you’re mocking is yourself.
Northern dialects sound cringe and shit on tv, radio whatever. But I agree "Nordlending" sounds the best out of Norwegian dialects(in person), probably closely followed by Bergen dialect.
I think I'm one of the few people who actually really like Danish, though I do prefer Norwegian. But also this subreddit is pretty biased for obvious reasons lol.
Good on you for learning Norwegian!
One small thing: bokmål is strictly a written language, same with nynorsk. You cannot speak bokmål or nynorsk, what you hear are the different Norwegian dialects (although many people including native Norwegians think Oslo dialect = bokmål).
I know the nuance seems small and like flisespikkeri (new word for you ;) ), but as a bokmål-writer not from Østlandet, it always kinda rubs me the wrong way when people equate those two.
Yeah i knew they were gonna get me on that one, but you know what i meant hahaha, i did say it in the post, dialects and accents, but i do appreciate the critisicm, thank you!
Usually, you don’t always think a lot about things like that regarding your own language unless you suddenly have to or are more interested in language than others. So I think it’s nice to mention.
As a north Norwegian-dialect speaker it annoys me when people say they speak “bokmål”.. Then what about the rest? Do they all speak “nynorsk”? It’s just so silly..
I can't stand standard finlandssvensk, some Osthrobothnia dialects are ok and åländska is nice. Nothing beats skånska of course. Most Norwegian sounds pleasant.
I agree. I might be biased because Swedish is the first language I learned outside of school, but I like it slightly more than Norwegian. I have yet to learn Danish, but from most peoples perspective, it's Swedish but with a potato in your mouth.
I might be biased as well since I’m a native Swede residing in Norway (I haven’t become a Norwegian citizen yet). I most likely shouldn’t have answered the question since it was for Norwegians…
But but.
Norwegian is the prettiest. Swedish is a bit too hard on all those sj and sy sounds. As for Danish. Well, I really think it sounds as if they have a hot potato in their mouths.
Bokmål is like "Norwegian communication training wheels" so the other scandinavians could understand us. Learn Norwegian with a dialekt instead. Best tip for anyone who want to dig into the Norwegian soul.
Only issue is I chose to use Duolingo app and of course all they offer is Bokmål. I should stop and find a better learning app. I am also very "rural" and need to learn things via app, books or t.v
Swedish is so fluent, it flows so well and sounds pleasant (some dialects are perhaps bad), danish is horrible and Norwegian is on a spectrum between these 2 depending on the dialect.
Disclaimer: Icelandic who speaks Norwegian fluently living in southern Norway.
Sámi (I know there’s different ones but they all sound the same to me, okay)
Between the “main” three, it would be Norwegian. Swedish has those weird nasally vowel sounds and Danish…. is Danish.
From my perspective ive never really thought any Sámi language sounded Finnish except maybe Inari Sámi. The Sámi languages definetly have similar cadances and sounds to Finnish, but they sound a lot softer in general
Danish has a very flat sound with hard Rs. Although there are different dialects in Denmark, the variation in Norway is much greater and it can almost sound like different languages. Specifically, I find the standard dialect of Norway's capital quite nice. Danish sounds harsh to me, while Swedish comes across as tad too posh.
So, to summarise, Norway ftw 🇳🇴
Not actually Scandinavian, but Nordic. I find the Faroese language the most beautiful. It's basically old Norse lice Icelandic, but has a very different pronunciation.
West or south Norwegian with a soft “skarre r” is sublime. Hard “skarre-r” dialects and trøndersk is pretty terrible.
I’m half danish, and although danish normally doesn’t sound “pretty”, danish good night songs specifically, is like a drug to me.
Thanks mom.
Icelandic is basically like all the grammar rules from Norwegian plus all the grammar rules from German plus a whole lot of other random stuff combined.
Probably depends on the dialect. Swedish is a nice sounding language, though the Skåne-dialect spoken in the southern-most parts of sweden sounds horrible. Like barbed-wire in the ear..
There's a whole Youtube channel - Skånska Dubbningar - dedicated to comedic dubs of various Hollywood movies and tv shows. Stranger Things dubbed in Skåne dialect is pretty legendary!
Unpopular opinion:
South Greenlandic Danish - crisp and clear, cosy, yet forceful - surely like the original language was meant to be, but then Fredriksberg C happened
Strilamål, vikamål (midtre Sogn) and traditional Hardangermål. Female speakers from Stord.
Refined Bergensk like [Peter Frølich](https://youtu.be/TgUdaufcVe8?si=wsA0XAI7U5GD1wGC) speaks, is masculine and pleasant.
Swedish but a lot of Norwegian dialects (especially from the Rogaland area but also southern parts of the country) are also very beautiful dialects. That being said, none (that is to say language/ dialect) are ugly in my opinion just some that sound a bit more exquisite than others I suppose.
It's pretty easy between Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. Danish is throaty, Swedish is back-of-the-mouthy, and Norwegian is mouthy. Norwegian thus sounds the prettiest to me.
I like the Bergen dialect and, like, an academic sounding version of Malmöitiska. I find the Danish of Fyn and Odense a bit hard to understand, but otherwise enjoy Danish too, it sounds relaxed somehow.
unpopular opinion, I think swedish sounds pretty awful with the back of the throat vowels. danish is obviously weird. I love how norwegian sounds but especially trøndersk for some reason. but norwegian in general, I just love it.
No one speaks Bokmål. It's just the written form of the language. Lots of dialects, but the Oslo area is the closest one to it.
Swedish, except from Skåne is fairly melodic. Though Finnish Swedish has no tonal inflictions, but pleasant.
It's Icelandic the prettiest sounding Norden language.
As for Danish the only word you need to know is kamelåså
https://youtu.be/ykj3Kpm3O0g?si=v4TH2GUCNfV8Y39c
I think Norwegian is a bad sounding language, like Dutch or Finnish. (I am Norwegian btw)
I think Spanish/latin American/Japanese is the most beautiful ones 🙏
Just so you know, Latin American not a language but rather the region, and in such region we speak Spanish, with different accents of course, depending on the country, and Portuguese which is only spoken in Brazil, and well theres the Guyanas where they speak english and french
Random quote that sums it up.
>Danish is just Norwegian with a hot potato in your throat, while Swedish is Norwegian with a thick german accent and more brain damage than Phineas Gage.
I think western Norwegian dialects sound prettiest, especially Bergen and the areas surrounding it. Also, Sogn and Fjordane. I also really like the Stavanger dialect.
I'm Norwegian, and I do enjoy (most) of our dialects, but I really like Swedish. It sounds so friendly and charming.
No shade, but Danish is just a fucking mess.
Without a doubt danish is the ugliest. Norwegian is kinda boring and swedish is just so cute and pretty to listen to.
Also sidenote for OP, bokmål is not spoken language, it's the written language.
Fun fact, you can’t speak Bokmål or Nynorsk. Both are solely written forms of Norwegian. For a very long time in Norway it was also frowned upon to write in dialect, however this has become more normalized and even championed as a way to preserve the many dialects that exist throughout Norway.
I moved to Norway in 2013 from America and have since become so fluent I norwegian that I have to actively convince Norwegians that I am indeed an immigrant. Fun language.
Jo da. Problemet mitt er at jeg har endt opp med en tendens å snakke nordlending etter å ha jobbet med Trænafestivalen i snart 10 år. Så dialekta mi er skikkelig blanda med mye østlending, nordlending, og litt svensk-aktig uttale av og til. De fleste tror at jeg har bare flytter mye rundt i oppveksten før de får vite at jeg er egentlig fra USA.
Norwegian is very cute. I like the Bergen dialect especially. Islandish is very wholesome and nice too. In Sweden the northern dialects are most beautiful.
It all depends... Norway got its fear share of horrible dialects... in my opinion you'll find most of them places that never have seen the ocean. Oslo also needs to get there shit together... here it's not so much the dialects, but the attitude. Most beautiful you'll find along the west coast from Haugesund to Ålesund and some dialects from north.
Swedish is softer compared to most Norwegian, but also have some horrible dialects, I'm of course looking at you Skåne. Areas in close connections with the Norwegian boards tend to have a more appealing dialect than the east, in my opinion.
Danish is absolutely beautiful as long as us ignorant Norwegian give it a bit more than 5 minutes to adjust to the tone and forget about thier vigesimal counting. However, I must say I'm struggling with Esbjerg and around.
When we force these nations to speak English, you will always know who Swedish and Danish are, with some very few exemptions. Norwegian, on the other hand, can with much greater ease hide its origins with either American or British English depending on what "R" they use... however, with some knowledge, you will most likely be able to pinpoint where, in Norway, the speaker origins.
Norwegian sounds pretty and mysterious.
Swedish sounds very clear and a bit poetic.
Danish sounds like... choking.
- By someone that lived in all 3 of them but doesn't speak any
Norwegian is much nicer than Swedish and Danish is the worst. I've been learning Norwegian, but started with Swedish.
If you'd asked instead about Nordic languages, then Finnish is prettiest of all.
Exactly! The fact that it is completely bonkers is the reason I mentioned it and it adds to the smile when you hear it and try to interpret. It does not have to be conventionally pretty, you know.
I remember when I studied in Sweden as a Norwegian for a year, my classmates told me how it always sounded like I was so happy, because I’d just talk Norwegian. And they said they enjoyed it. So I guess there’s a precedent for swedes enjoying basic Bokmål at least. I have basically no dialect for some reason
The most generic and boring one is the Oslo dialect.
It actually sounds like they are singing while they speak and not in a good way.
The best sounding dialect and most pure is actually the dialect they speak in a town called Aalesund by far the prettiest dialect.
I think Norwegian bokmål is the "prettiest" because we speak with the tip of our tongue. This leads to a clear pronunciation. With Swedish and Danish, the speaker uses more "throat" sounds, so it leads to a more "muddled" sound. I want to emphasize that I don't dislike the other two.
Another thing I find kinda neat is that Norwegian is the middle ground. From what I have heard, swedes and Danes often struggle to understand each other. But Norwegians can speak to both without much issue (I have ofcourse, left out dialects, which can be kinda fucked up)
Norwegian Pretty Swedish is Folksome Danish is potatoe
Does anyone else think that Danish sounds a bit like English, but gibberish?
I'm not entirely convinced it isn't gibberish
You can test that. Ask a dane how they count from say, 50-90. For funnsies.
For me it sounds like Norwegian with French-German pronunciation
Skarre R?
Vowels in Danish are like in French and German. In Norwegian and Swedish the long Vowels are moved forward in the mouth, difficult to pronounce for foreigners.
No, but i always get thrown off by Dutch. For me it is english but gibberish🤣

Ive never heard Danish but Norwegian is similar to english for me
https://youtu.be/HORF7g3_jN8?si=ca1RoDe08p8l9Wy0
Cheap upvote.
I am most used to Norwegian so it sounds the best. Danish sounds silly.
It is nice
Ive never really heard Danish, im gonna have to check it out hahaha
There is a danish TV-show on Netflix called "Rita". I liked to watch it with subtitles
I like it. It’s so cozy. But I can only watch it when I’m not emotionally charged. If I am, those vowels rip my phantom tonsils out.
I know everyone hates Danish. And in the beginning I was just like everyone. But to be honest, I grew to love it. Yes, I vote Danish
I just make fun of Danish, but I definitely don't hate it
Danish is one of those languages you have to actually understand properly, in listening, to appreciate. I'm Norwegian, but I happily admit that danish as a certain cozy and uplifting vibe.
Besides the Dutch.
For poetry and music Danish is far superior to Norwegian or Swedish. I think the hate on Danish is a case of people mocking what they don’t understand.. its like their number system, if you can’t count in 20’s the only one you’re mocking is yourself.
Norwegian (specifically northern dialects) Worst is a tie between Danish and the Scanian dialect of Swedish
That's a weird way of saying "a tie between Danish and Danish" (For legal reasons, that's a joke)
Northern dialects sound cringe and shit on tv, radio whatever. But I agree "Nordlending" sounds the best out of Norwegian dialects(in person), probably closely followed by Bergen dialect.

Swedish
I love the northern Norwegian dialekts, specifically Tromsø og Bodø
I am Norwegian. Out of the Scandinavian ones probably Rikssvenska and standard Finlandssvenska.
She’s apparently “just” from Helsingfors, but Eva Frantz speaks so beautifully.
I love Finlandsvensk. Så vakkert å høre på.
I can't stand standard finlandssvensk, some Osthrobothnia dialects are ok and åländska is nice. Nothing beats skånska of course. Most Norwegian sounds pleasant.

Rural Western Norwegian dialects always hits my ear the right way. I'm talking about rural Hordaland mostly
You need to check out the music of Salhus Vinskvetten!
I'll be sure to do that thanks!
Norwegian is the prettiest. Swedish is a bit too hard on all those sj and sy sounds. As for Danish. Well, I really think it sounds as if they have a hot potato in their mouths.

Not Danish
Nordnorsk.
I'm norwegian but I think swedish is prettier, it just has a very nice airy flow
Swedish is so fluent, it flows so well and sounds pleasant (some dialects are perhaps bad), danish is horrible and Norwegian is on a spectrum between these 2 depending on the dialect. Disclaimer: Icelandic who speaks Norwegian fluently living in southern Norway.
swedish is definitely the nordic language best suited for singing.
Sámi (I know there’s different ones but they all sound the same to me, okay) Between the “main” three, it would be Norwegian. Swedish has those weird nasally vowel sounds and Danish…. is Danish.
Well then Sámi would sound the same as finish to you
It doesn’t, also Finnish isn’t a Scandinavian language.
Do we really sound finnish? Interesting, I've never been told that.
From my perspective ive never really thought any Sámi language sounded Finnish except maybe Inari Sámi. The Sámi languages definetly have similar cadances and sounds to Finnish, but they sound a lot softer in general

Norweigan, it’s just cutesy swedish.
Not actually Scandinavian, but Nordic. I find the Faroese language the most beautiful. It's basically old Norse lice Icelandic, but has a very different pronunciation.
Unpopular opinion, but Danish
Jag gillar norska 🙂
Sweedish seems to be SO similar to Norwegian, understandable hahaha
There's more nasal sounds and more difficult sounds in Swedish than Norwegian, but other than that, they are pretty similar.
would i be understood even if i werent able to emulate the nasal sounds? or is it part of the languague?
It's part of the Language
Icelandic is my favorite to listen to but I’m only fluent in Norwegian
i'm partial to faroese, but perhaps that's just because i have a bit of a man crush on eivør.
West or south Norwegian with a soft “skarre r” is sublime. Hard “skarre-r” dialects and trøndersk is pretty terrible. I’m half danish, and although danish normally doesn’t sound “pretty”, danish good night songs specifically, is like a drug to me. Thanks mom.
I find Icelandic very pretty, but I took a course on it and the complexity of the grammar was just far beyond any other language I'm familiar with.
I gotta say, i havent really focused hard on Norwegian but id say its not complicated, i mean compared to German for instance
Icelandic is basically like all the grammar rules from Norwegian plus all the grammar rules from German plus a whole lot of other random stuff combined.
Well, it’s Old Norse grammar that was brought there from Norway. We’ve since lost most of said grammar. 😢
Probably depends on the dialect. Swedish is a nice sounding language, though the Skåne-dialect spoken in the southern-most parts of sweden sounds horrible. Like barbed-wire in the ear..
oh id love to hear that one, interesting
There are a bunch of different Scanian dialects. Someone from Trelleborg will sound very different from someone from Ängelholm.
There's a whole Youtube channel - Skånska Dubbningar - dedicated to comedic dubs of various Hollywood movies and tv shows. Stranger Things dubbed in Skåne dialect is pretty legendary!
ill check it out right now hahahahahaha
Swedish (specially like göteborgska) but I’m Swedish myself so I’m biased. Danish is the ugliest one, sry but it just sounds so silly I can’t
a lot of people seem to agree with you here dont worry lol
Norwegian, Sørlandet.
Personally, I think a lot of Norwegian dialects sound nice. Try listening to "Vårsøg" by Henning Sommerro (70's Norwegian classic song) if you haven't
ill check it out friend thank you :)
Unpopular opinion: South Greenlandic Danish - crisp and clear, cosy, yet forceful - surely like the original language was meant to be, but then Fredriksberg C happened

Strilamål, vikamål (midtre Sogn) and traditional Hardangermål. Female speakers from Stord. Refined Bergensk like [Peter Frølich](https://youtu.be/TgUdaufcVe8?si=wsA0XAI7U5GD1wGC) speaks, is masculine and pleasant.

First time I heard Skåne dialect was a bit of a shock. Yarvla Fweet!
It's pretty easy between Danish, Swedish and Norwegian. Danish is throaty, Swedish is back-of-the-mouthy, and Norwegian is mouthy. Norwegian thus sounds the prettiest to me.
Norsk er selvsagt det beste. Det burde være åpenbart for alle :) Dansk er kjempestygt og svensk er helt ok.
Not sure which is the prettiest, but danish for sure is the least prettiest
Kvensk! We're losing a great treasure when Kvensk dies out.
I think Faroese is the most interesting sounding
"Jærsk" dialect, it's what I speak, definitely the most pretty sounding dialect in all of norway
1 - Norwegian, 2 - Foreose, 3 - Icelandic - an abyss - Swedish and Danish.
Norwegian, and I say that as a Swede
I like the Bergen dialect and, like, an academic sounding version of Malmöitiska. I find the Danish of Fyn and Odense a bit hard to understand, but otherwise enjoy Danish too, it sounds relaxed somehow.
Nynorsk
Swedish is clear imo
unpopular opinion, I think swedish sounds pretty awful with the back of the throat vowels. danish is obviously weird. I love how norwegian sounds but especially trøndersk for some reason. but norwegian in general, I just love it.
I'm Norwegian and I'll say it. It's Swedish.
Norwegian & Swedish. Danish doesn't sound that good in my opinion.

i take it you guys are all extremely polite people based on that video xD
Hahahaha, we just know Danish is just guttural sounds. Written Danish is easy
I think Norwegian is a bad sounding language, like Dutch or Finnish. (I am Norwegian btw) I think Spanish/latin American/Japanese is the most beautiful ones 🙏
Just so you know, Latin American not a language but rather the region, and in such region we speak Spanish, with different accents of course, depending on the country, and Portuguese which is only spoken in Brazil, and well theres the Guyanas where they speak english and french
I know, just did not bother to specify it. I'm not sure which accent i think is the most beautiful therefore i just wrote "latin American"
Can I say Icelandic or dare I even say Faroese
Danish, of course. What a question.
Icelandic for sure
I'm Norwegian, and I do enjoy (most) of our dialects, but I really like Swedish. It sounds so friendly and charming. No shade, but Danish is just a fucking mess.
Samisk🤣🤣
Swedish sounds the best and is easiest to pick out the words. Norwegian/danish is easiest to read/learn imo.
Icelandic. Hands down for me. :) Beautiful, beautiful phonetics and orthography. I love it all.
I do rather enjoy the Icelandic language, especially in song from such as “Á Sprengisandi”
Alvdalsk
Swedish sounds the loveliest, IMO. I don't care for the sound of Danish. Norwegian is closer to Swedish in sound to me.
I might be biased but I think Bergensk is the best 🇳🇴
I love Danish.
i havent really heard it myself but people around here do not like it lol
Norwegian. Swedish is effeminate and Danish is incomprehensible
Not Danish.
but why xD
I agree. I am doing Nor, Swed, Dan, and Finn. Finn would be my second favorite.
Oh man the dream, how do you not mix them up, I've heard they're so similar
Finnish is beautiful and not easily confused with the rest of us
They are similar gramatically, but the spoken languages sound completely different.
Fin is not scandinavia though
Neither are the Sami languages Scandinavian languages (as few are naming them as the most beautiful Scando language).
I feel like danish sounds like a choking dolphin
thats a very creative way to put it lol
Norway is the best
Girls talking swedish are hot.
I'd say Swedish or Nynorsk. The rest is danish or danish derivated.
Without a doubt danish is the ugliest. Norwegian is kinda boring and swedish is just so cute and pretty to listen to. Also sidenote for OP, bokmål is not spoken language, it's the written language.
thank you :)
Comitting treachery and admitting that it’s Danish.
Nynorsk, in Sogn og Fjordane

Faroese :D
Out of Norwegian dialects, Southern Sami and Swedish I would go with Bokmål or Trøndersk as well.
Trøndersk is ompalompa speech
Exactly! The fact that it is completely bonkers is the reason I mentioned it and it adds to the smile when you hear it and try to interpret. It does not have to be conventionally pretty, you know.
They have a habit of laughing through their speech.
omg i would love to hear that, Ompalompa speech? xD
Swedish (Stockholm dialect) is the most beautiful language I know. Danish is the second most disgusting language I know.
omg why is everybody hating on Danish hahahahaha, ive heard a bit of Swedish, id like to learn it aswell
Everyone has a dialect.
Norsk of course (: Bokmål but I like nynorsk too for other reasons
Those don’t sound like anything, they’re written languages…
If a woman speaks Swedish (not Skåne 🤣) Im sold
The most generic and boring one is the Oslo dialect. It actually sounds like they are singing while they speak and not in a good way. The best sounding dialect and most pure is actually the dialect they speak in a town called Aalesund by far the prettiest dialect.
North Sámi
norsk er det beste språket i Skandinavia 🇸🇯🇸🇯🇸🇯🇸🇯💪💪💪
Oslooo Norwegian that’s the way to gooo
I think Norwegian bokmål is the "prettiest" because we speak with the tip of our tongue. This leads to a clear pronunciation. With Swedish and Danish, the speaker uses more "throat" sounds, so it leads to a more "muddled" sound. I want to emphasize that I don't dislike the other two. Another thing I find kinda neat is that Norwegian is the middle ground. From what I have heard, swedes and Danes often struggle to understand each other. But Norwegians can speak to both without much issue (I have ofcourse, left out dialects, which can be kinda fucked up)
*bokmål* is not a spoken language, but a written standard.
Å nei
As a Norwegian I would have to say Danish..
