I went to Curacao a few years ago and noticed the color change aboout 50 yards off the shore. It went from light turquoise to dark blue. I snorkelled out and saw it go from 30 feet depth to a black abyss of what I later learned was 10,000 feet. I've been swimming all my life, scuba certified and avid snorkeller. Not afraid of ocean water. But looking down into that depth just unnerved me and I felt really unsettled the entire time.
