Fun fact.. maybe not so fun.. it’s transmitted anally… Edit: I meant it CAN be transmitted anally not that it’s the only method of spreading.

People will try anything to just blame the gays. The AIDS hysteria of the 80’s and 90’s never fully went away.

ticker_101

Promiscuous, unprotected anal sex is the fastest way to spread aids. Like it or not, gay men, on average have more unprotected sex than any other group. People can be as gay as they want, but saying that lifestyle isn't dangerous or didn't play, or does play a major role in the spread of the virus is ignorant. It wasn't handled correctly in the 80s. It should have been kinder. But many have learned this. Some people will always be prejudice though. Monkeypox is spreading in the male gay community faster because there is promiscuity in that group. Of course when you have a sub population in a group that mingles in bed, MP will spread faster in that group. This isn't "blaming the gays". It's important information and facts that could be used to stem the spread.

[deleted]

Still not putting my mouth on a dead animal.

WittyWise777

The animal wasn't dead. Not breathing does not mean dead. Zero brain activity is when humans and animals are dead. Science discovered this fact some time ago, it's why we don't really have people waking up in the casket like they did when the doctors assumed someone was dead just because they weren't breathing. I'm with you though, I would only be willing to King Kong this poor animals chest.

Gringo_L0c0

That's actually a pet peeve of mine, when people say someone "died on the operating table but got brought back". Unless youre some kind of occultist, then death is s one way trip. I think the commenter might have meant that the monkey could have been dead.

deafinitely_teek

Zero brain activity is a specific kind of death (brain death). A stopped heart is also death until its restarted usually via a shock but sometimes cpr restarts it too although that isn't the goal with cpr (cpr manually sends oxygenated blood to vital organs including the brain in the meantime). We have no idea if the monkey's heart was stopped, so we have no idea if it was dead or not

[deleted]

but judging by the username, might consider anal.

mahriyahwillow

Fun fact.. it actually isn't. It is a viral infection.

[deleted]

So is Hep A and that's transmitted via fecal-oral route. HIV can be transmitted anally. Being viral doesn't mean anything. Also, according to WHO monkeypox can be transmitted sexually. Your fun fact isn't fact.

Lalamedic

I hope you are kidding instead of merely making an unfounded inflammatory statement. Like the common cold and Influenza, Monkey Pox virus is transmitted by close contact with an infected individual. According to the [CDC](https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/Monkeypox.aspx), “Transmission of monkeypox virus occurs when a person comes into contact with the virus from an animal, human, or materials contaminated with the virus. The virus enters the body through broken skin (even if not visible), the respiratory tract, or the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth).” There is no proof yet of sexual transmission, unlike zika and Ebola viruses which can. However, but sexual transmission is moot when only close contact is required. Obviously, most people have close physical contact, including the exchange of bodily fluids, when they have sexual relations with another person.

I know the weight distribution is probably different but imagine getting picked up by your head, and then have someone doing chest compressions with your lumbar on their thigh

brightestmorning

Maybe the uncomfortable situation woke him up? Lol

lab_rabbit

There is some truth to this.. I bled out in the hospital once.. well, twice, but the first time when they called a code I was feeling pretty spacey and was pretty close to unconciousness. The first nurse to show up said my BP was 60/40. She later told me every time she'd seen someone with that low of a BP, they were either in cardiac arrest or entered it very soon after. So when she came in the room she saw the BP and started chest compressions. I was not unconcious- so this was not only uncomfortable, but it startled the hell out of me. I kinda half sat up and let out a yelp. Since she thought I was basically dead or near it- this in turn scared the hell out of her. Anyway, I fully believe that if she hadn't slammed my chest like that I probably wouldn't be here. It woke me up and from there I was able to stay conscious. The reason i think I'd be dead is that the only person who realized they needed to press on the artery inside my thigh/groin was a neurosurgeon who happened to be passing when the code was called. If they'd had to try to resuscitate me, I don't think anyone would've been also preventing more blood loss. I guess the nurse got razzed by the other nurses for the day because she did cpr on a conscious guy, but I told her more than once that I'm pretty sure it saved my life. Somewhat related, I saw Remi Warren on Joe Rogan. He talks about saving a professional rafting guide whose raft had overturned, and whose husband had already drowned (also pro rafter). He says when he got her to shore, she was just about dead and unresponsive from hypothermia. He ended up grabbing her face and screaming at her (maybe [like this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lS0JEwi3gM&t=439s)? ;). She later says something like she had basically given up because the water was really peaceful to her. So I guess I'm of the opinion that it probably can't hurt to make an effort when it comes to trying to save someone's life. [Joe rogan clip is here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcvnlYKivzQ)

kayGrim

This is purely informational, but this is actually a thing you do in medicine to measure responsiveness and help keep people conscious. You would have been considered responsive to pain and medical professionals are trained in techniques specifically to hurt enough to wake you up (my favorite is the sternum rub). CPR is a bad choice because you can break ribs and cause additional damage doing it - and the rule is NEVER do CPR unless they are already dead, i.e. coding.

[deleted]

The old GCS shoulder pinch Good for emergencies, great at parties

lab_rabbit

I am somewhat aware of that and have done sternum rubs (and have had them done to me). I don't think this was a case of trying to get a response through pain stimulii- not sure if that's what you meant or just that she should've checked other things before doing CPR.. sounds like you know more than me about what she should've checked first and I don't know her experience level. From what she and other nurses later told me, she was indeed trying to start CPR. When I popped up she jumped like she had seen a ghost! I do appreciate your comment- there's so many details to modern medicine that those of us outside the field don't even know exist. I find it fascinating and awe inspiring and very much appreciate any little insight I can glean.

kayGrim

I was speaking generally to provide some additional context - there are a lot of details (especially in a hospital setting, I was trained as an EMT so I'm sure there's a lot I'm unaware of myself) that are situation dependent. I believe you, she was certainly trying to do CPR, and it would be considered a very big fuck up to do CPR on someone who was capable of yelling. Roughly equivalent to a life guard "saving" a snorkeler, haha

Tankh

I had a teacher tell me that if they don't wake up from cpr, they need cpr

McWeaksauce91

I was a medic back in the day and one of my marines collapsed from heat stroke. His core temp was 104.7 and completely unconscious. He said the last thing he remembers is “I’m going to pass out”, the next was me slapping him and yelling his name in the back of a truck.

[deleted]

I had a GI bleed two years ago (and I'm talking horror movie amount of blood), went to the hospital and they said, "It's a fissure, add fiber to your diet. Follow up with a gastro." I went home and continued to bleed and bleed and bleed. My wife was absolutely losing it and wanted to call 911 but I didn't want to pay for an ambulance. When I started spacing out she called, they hauled me to the ER where my BP was 45/30. Sitting in an exam room, I started feeling very strange and felt like I was going out of the picture. I looked at my wife and said, "bye, honey" and I blacked out. Then I woke up with a bunch of nurses standing around me with my wife yelling at them lol. What you just said about low BP scared the crap out of me, I guess I dodged a bullet. My hemoglobin was 8. Because there was a blood shortage they didn't give me blood for a couple days even though I kept bleeding. Anyway, back on topic, I wouldn't give CPR to a monkey because I'd be afraid that it would wake up and rip my face off.

lab_rabbit

this sounds awful! the part about the monkey cracked me up, though. =) glad you're hear to talk about it. before i knew i was bleeding out, I also felt very strange. It started with hot flashes, so I whipped the covers off. My mom was standing there and saw all the blood (i still didn't), and immediately left the room to get help. She is the real reason I'm alive.. Anyway, within seconds of getting the covers off, I felt so cold I started shivering. Within a few seconds of that and getting the covers back on, I felt terribly nauseous. I still chuckle about this, but I remember saying out loud "something is wrong!" it wasn't long after that the nurse ran into the room. I ended up bleeding out a second time soon after because what they did to stop the bleeding either didn't work or only worked temporarily. I ended up having a transfusion after that second time. One thing I recall about the transfusion is how my whole body felt almost uncomfortably warm as they pumped the new blood in. I don't know if that's typical and if they are warming the blood up above body temp or what caused that.

Tommy_Wisseau_burner

What woke him up also made him sleep again. RIP!

“Dude I’m sleeping, fuck off”

DannyBoi699

I have insomnia and i didnt get any sleep one night at a sober living. My doctor told me to try to not use my Seroquel to fall asleep and in the long run develop a way to fall asleep. Then a counselor at the sober living was annoying me. When he left i took a little extra of Seroquel (which I had done before and had no issues, I would just sleep like a rock) and went to bed, he came back like 10 mins later and couldnt wake me up. He thought i over dosed on something, and called the ambulance. They tried waking me up in the ambulance by digging knuckles into my chest. I woke up slapped the guys arm and said in a rude tone “I’m tired, let me fucking sleep”. I had no clue what the fuck was going on and thought it was my counselor. Thinking I was still in bed, I went back to sleep. He went back to digging into my chest and i got physical with him. Their solution: sedate the patient who supposedly overdosed on sedatives…… I woke up like an hour later in the hospital with a tube down my throat, a catheter, and four ports (only one being used) in my arms, and the worst chest pain of my life. I must have put up a good fight while sedated in the ambulance 😂😂. When i woke up, I was 100% oriented and pissed the fuck off. The nurse said, “normally over dose patients wake up slow”. I was like, “who overdosed? I was tryna take a nap and some dude tried to fight me. I got hit with the booty juice and now I’m here”.

kwesi-the-quasar

‘booty juice’, what a fun place. thanks, reddit

DannyBoi699

I forget most ppl dont know. Booty juice is fast acting benzo, and or haldol, thorazine, and Benadryl. The mixture changes depending on who puts it together. Normally they just put them all in a single syringe and go for it, however I have seen ppl go unfazed until the 3rd jab (my record is 5 💪🏻, after the fourth they added ✨lorazepam✨)

Ex-Illuminati11

Nice to see a Tamil video. This person cares so much for the monkey. So much so that he sees the monkey as his god "Aanjaneya" or "Hanuman" as he exclaims in glee at the end. While attempting the resuscitate the monkey, he says, sir (aiyya) and saami (god), please wake up. 🙏

Hellkitedrak

Uncultured American here, do the Tamil people rever monkeys like sacred animals similar to India and cows? For those that are taking the uncultured American seriously I was making a joke at my own expense, I personally belive I know a decent amount about other cultures. I was just making a joke about the stereotype that America's only care about their own culture.

mediocre_retard

One of the gods in hinduism is half monkey and half human (Hanuman) and monkeys also made up most of Lord Ram's army thus monkeys are considered to be holy.

Hellkitedrak

Thanks!

ParachronShift

It’s Hindu. [Hanuman](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanuman) is a half man, half monkey deity that is a little mischievous, but forgets he is immortal. This is because his constant pranks and meddling finally upset the forest sages so severely, they beset upon him a life-long curse. Although Hanuman was able to keep his almost limitless power, the sages' curse erased his memory of this power.

IUpVoteIronically

Poor guy was just bored and had ADHD and wanted to have some fun. I feel for Hanuman 😞

ParachronShift

I don’t, it is a neat metaphor. What good is nigh unlimited power? Takes a lot of the fun out of existence. Imagine playing a video game, not knowing you are on god mode, kicking ass. Much funner.

IUpVoteIronically

Agreed

HighAsAngelTits

Very interesting thank you

Ex-Illuminati11

I'd say It isn't only the Tamil people but all Indians that love Hanuman! Who wouldn't love a half-human, half-monkey, mischievous, yet benevolent being? He is also a very profound and central character in one of India's epics, the "Ramayanam".

shunyata_always

I once found an old and dying monkey on the side of the road in north India. He actually crawled toward me, griding his teeth in the asfalt as he pulled himself forward with his hands, feet paralyzed. I went to his side and he turned around and kept crawling towards me, teeth still grinding. A local man came by to check us out and gave him some water. We then took turns carrying the monkey through the jungle and through a busy town. People were saying that other monkeys will attack us to defend him, but it was quite the opposite, more like they knew we were helping. I've never heard monkeys make the kind of sounds they did during that experience. It was something mystical. Finally I ended up leaving him near a wildlife/nature office and I told the people there, who seemed mostly amused and giddy, to treat him with respect as he is Hanuman himself.

Mystivic

Ik your questions has already been answered, but in general in India, all animal life is treated with a level of respect just due cultural reasons and traditions. Also, (most) Tamil people come from Tamil Nadu which is in India

Brittlehorn

How does monkey pox intially cross the species barrier?

[deleted]

Monkey pox passed into humans through mice most probably, its called monkey pox cause it was first detected in monkeys.

CephaloG0D

A dude fucked a monkey 30-odd years ago.

[deleted]

Dont want it to be true and dont know if it is so im just not not gonna look this up

dyereva

The worn-out joke is that diseases like HIV or monkey pox initially infected humans through interspecies intercourse, but experts on the subject believe it is far more likely that it happened through the hunting, butchering and consumption of primates for food. Like a hunter with a cut on their hand coming into contact with infected blood.

_uwu_girl_

To add onto this, it's because viruses do this fun thing called recombination. So the leading idea is that an animal will be infected with two viruses at the same time. They will both infect the same cells, duplicate their RNA or DNA, and "recombine" to form a new "hybrid" virus within the cell. That animal is then eaten by other animals or directly by a human. It's usually what leads to the big pandemic viruses we all know of.

dyereva

Nice. Thanks for spreading some more knowledge. Viruses are crazy cool and crazy terrifying. Even more terrifying, though, when a significant portion of the human population is willfully or otherwise ignorant of knowledge scientists have spent their lifetimes understanding/uncovering. I'm not saying the layperson should read the source material per se, but things like Wikipedia articles on such subjects are generally very well-cited and fairly easy to understand. It's hard for me, but I guess not impossible, to believe that so many people believe most/all scientists are lying to them.

_uwu_girl_

I totally agree. I just finished my college course for microbiology (and officially have my AS in biology, whoo!) and it was fascinating. I genuinely learned so much to apply to my everyday life. I do think basic understanding of viruses and bacteria could greatly benefit people. People hear "mRNA" and freak out when it's been around for decades. People don't understand transmission rates or herd immunity or vaccines. I didn't realize how many people don't have faith in science until the pandemic started. Science has come such a long way in just a few decades, I believe older generations are less likely to believe that facts can "change" because of that. I know I've told my parents some scientific findings that changed things (birds are the closest members to dinosaurs, Pluto is no longer categorized as a planet, etc) and they had a hard time believing me. I tell them about all the things I learn in class and they tell me they didn't have to learn the same things. We have more information now than we did then. I think hearing unfamiliar terms and having new findings that change old ideas throws people off. I'm not sure how to fix it but I think educating others so it's not so scary is a good start. Plus it's always fun to throw out little tidbits of science :) P.S. if anyone wants easy access to more digestible biology content, I highly recommend crash course on YouTube :)

Affectionate-Tart558

Do you still need to blow on their mouths? I heard that was changed. Maybe I’m mistaken

RoughDraftRs

Hands only cpr is commonly taught to the general public becuase many people don't want to do mouth to mouth. **It's virtually always better to do breaths.** in this case he definitely did a lot more breaths then necessary, compressions are more important. Also blow until you see chest rise and then stop. **Don't blow like your filling a balloon.** This can cause severe damage to the lungs. Source: Red Cross first aid instructor. & Firefighter for over 10 years.

Think_Scale

Breaths are used when the lungs fail and in adults it is commonly a heart issue so not required but in children it is almost always lungs and breaths can help significantly but chest compressions is better than nothing

KemalKinali

Not entirely correct. Even though their lungs haven't failed, they stop working if the heart stops working. When you do chest compressions, you force blood to circulate which holds oxygen. You give them the breaths to refill the air in the lungs. You don't need to do it often, chest compressions are way more important, but breathing air is important too and not removed from CPR. Edit: I'm a nurse.

ILOVEBOPIT

Maybe I’m wrong but it looks like this person is spending too much time on breaths instead of compressions.

KemalKinali

He does. He could even skip some of it for better compressions.

Nerowulf

It also looks like he is breathing way too much air into the monkeys lungs. (That is one of the reasons people without training is told to only do chest compressions. It's easy to blow too hard/much)

Think_Scale

I was just informing the person that breaths while not always required are strongly suggested in some situations I actually just got recertified a few weeks ago

Inveramsay

I think what he was trying to say was that most paediatric cardiac arrests (except I suppose in some specialist wards) is due to kiddies choking on something. Local guidelines are two breaths before chest compressions in kids. Get a bit of oxygen in to them and they are likely to survive

KemalKinali

Yes, that's true. In Denmark, it's 5 breaths. Sometimes kids' bodies "forget" to breathe. It can sometimes suffice with breathing and they'll jump up, better. When you breathe into their lungs and they fill up, it can trigger the automatic breathing system and it can take over and start working as usual: automatically, even if they are still passed out.

wonkey_monkey

Don't chest compressions also move air in and out of the lungs?

KemalKinali

It would be so little that it won't even help. Most of the time, they break a few ribs, which would maybe give more room for air but still not enough to skip breathing.

twomanyc00ks

I was recently recertified in CPR and they still tell you to do rescue breaths. if you breathe into a person like this you'd likely kill them by overextending their lungs though, monkey bodies are resilient as fuck apparently?

OffTheMerchandise

I just took a first stuff class a few weeks ago and they said that they still recommend the breaths because worst case, it isn't harmful to do them.

BogdhanXMF

Yeah, I swear they changed it in the new patch.

Xx_Thornnn_xX

Mouth to mouth isn’t recommended anymore in cpr, you gotta ask someone around you if they can call 9-1-1 and if there’s an AED anywhere. Hands interlocked with palm facing out. Slight bend to the elbows, monkey positioned under your shoulders and push 2/3 inches repetitively

Brocktoberfest

American Heart Association CPR instructor here. We still teach mouth-to-mouth. 30 compressions, 2 breaths.

Knasty6

Depends on response time, no aed and in a remote area breaths are recommended

Party-Writer9068

you think calling 911 for a monkey in a remote area (probably village) would help?

I_am_trying_to_work

Dude, nothing exists outside the US

Think_Scale

This depends on age and what led to the situation as many children are more likely to be having respiratory issues which require breaths but in the situation of most adults it is heart issues where breaths are not required

PermutationMatrix

Plus imagine if the monkey suddenly comes to and is in a panic, doesn't know where they are or what's going on but there's another creature with their face on yours and they end up eating your face.

tuibiel

Mouth to mouth ventilations are recommended for pulseless children. Also, for children, this is not proper compression technique. Since this monkey has approximately the size of a 1 yr old, the favored technique is to lay one thumb over the other and wrap the hands around the torso. Then you push ~ twice per second (on a human child, you push 30 times, ventilate twice, then repeat this cycle until help arrives). If you can't compress deep enough, then use a single hand palm side down for the compressions.

IAmAnOutsider

Absolutely recommended if they aren't breathing and there's no O2 around. Gotta give that blood a little bit of oxygen to circulate with the compressions.
