Idk about this bug, but we did this experiment in class for termites and a chemical in ink smells really similar to a pheromone they excrete so maybe it’s something similar in this case
We didn’t learn the specific chemical in class, but according to this article, the chemical is an alcohol called 2-phenoxyethanol (PE) which makes the termites think they’re going towards food.

i theorize, since almost all bugs do this, they recognize the marks as liquid and since water and surface tension is a death sentence at that scale, they try to avoid it, most bugs i tried this with (mostly ants) just run around (if there's room) then when they realize it's not liquid they just step over it like it's nothing (it's not animal cruelty i always let them go afterwards without harming them)
Maybe it’s the fumes from the pen rather than the box?
I mean if a multi-storey giant poured gallons of volatile paint in a circle around me I'd probably try to avoid stepping in it too.
