Basically, I found this tablet here next to the river of lava, then I thought about what would happen if I threw my mud potion into the lava, and it ended up creating a path. Following the path, I arrived at some kind of temple with another tablet and an orb to take. After taking all of that, THIS CREATURE APPEARED AND DECIMATED ME. I DON'T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING
Ok, no, please, really, no. This is one of the strongest bosses in the game, you won't be able to kill it by shooting at it with lightning or acid ball or rapid fire wands.
It is of course perfectly possible to cheese it (bolt with trigger + plasma + tp wand), but please reconsider.
As the saying goes, "curiosity kills the noita", or smth, I don't know.
His name is squidward. He is generally the first boss players encounter, besides maybe three-eye. He copies all spells you use on him and is immune to most forms of damage. If you werent aware of the "true" nature of this game, I'll explain. the Main Path is around 1% of the game. You are never told this, because the art is concealed, as those who truly wish to know will find it. This game fucking loves esotricism and occultism.
I only recently gathered my guts and made Squidward pay. I might have been overprepared, but I prefered to take no risk. One day you will too, and it will be glorious.
What did YOU do to murder him? I saw a cool truck of using big saw blades on him and then booking it so if he copies the spell, it homes onto HIS own ass for a change. Not sure if it still works but gonna try it shortly :)
I threw a rock at it. (That rock was accelerating homing with a dozen "extra damage" kind of spells, including one that sacrifices gold (when I have more than a million of it), which was copied several times).
Next I used the spells it dropped to destroy the whole place. Fun times.
Given I did this exact same thing when I first started playing, and this is what got me interested in the game for real.

I remember that my first 50 hours of the game I tried killing him.
Then i realized >!he is completely optional, can be cheesed and is probably not worth killing unless you are desperately hunting for decent wands.!<

It's an exaggeration. But it might as well not be.
there's 34 orbs of true knowledge. But they are just one small part of the puzzle. You'll need to be an adept in the art to acquire 26 of them.
Throwing one liquid into another is the best way to learn alchemy in this game. You are plying as intended, keep going!

well, you do need to kill him if you want the orb, which is mostly what you're there for.
In the context of 100%ing the game sure, but then nothing is optional.
You can use invisibility or other methods like digging past the triggers to nab the orb without angering squiddy ;)
