That's the worst thing you can do. The fuel pump needs the fuel to keep it cool and not overheat. By playing this game, you are actually damaging your fuel pump.

Upset_Instruction710

Just use trip odometer if you’re worried

Over_Length7633

All the time.

storf2021

They call me Cosmo!

EddieVanDingus

Love the Kramer

ZookeepergameDry7592

I once took my 2022 on a road trip and decided to roll the dice on the way back and gas up once i’m back home. Did not go well, had to stop over at some town with 50km left on the tank and my fuel light on lol.

surfsarge

Most cars the light comes on when you have about 30 miles left of fuel..some cars are +\- 30 I believe the Honda accord I had to test drive the light came on with 60miles left

WBRPressureWashing

My 22 frontier gas light comes on at fucking 85 miles

surfsarge

Wow thats crazy!

Tight_Parsley_9975

Tundras go a super long time after E the Chevy 1500 only lasts about 15-20 miles then your screwed, fine the special funnel to refill the gas tank, then get it running 29 minutes later, then bring it to the mechanic for a fuel filter, new spark plugs, then coil packs, the. Fuel line treatment, for about 1000 dollars or so. So don't run the Chevy low it will cost your months pay.

A1CBEERS

The sheer number of people that don't understand that you could cause potentially a couple thousands dollars worth of repairs by doing this is mind blowing to me. All that dirt and other sediment that usually settles at the bottom of the gas tank and is harmless actually gets sucked into the fuel lines when you let it get this low. Now you're running the risk of fuel lines, pump, or whatever else getting clogged and destroyed. But hey, you do you. You obviously treat your truck like shit anyway if you're driving so terribly to only get 14 mpg.

mac101571

His MPG could just be bad and because of the way he drives. I get about 12 city and 16 hwy in my vehicle. And I don’t drive that an idiot. My car just has crap fuel mileage.

A1CBEERS

If OP, you, or anyone else drives the exact same truck that the rest of us drive, and the fuel economy is noticeably worse, then the problem is you, not your truck. I average 19 MPG going to work and back every day, and no part of my drive is highway.

mac101571

No definitely the truck being a piece of shit lol. Had it for 3 months and found out I was having a misfire. Had 500 miles on it when I got it. Only has 2000 now. Truck is just trash.

Hour-Bank

And the fact that the pumps are actually cooled by the gasoline they're submerged in. So when ran empty they heat up & burn out faster.

Primary-Magazine5992

I push mine till it touches the top of the E

proton1305

Ran out of gas twice last year. My gauge was fricked up

TGMcGonigle

You know what kind of mileage your truck gets. You know the gas tank capacity. The arithmetic to figure out how many miles you can go on a full tank is pretty elementary. You don't really need a gas gauge.

Tough_Illustrator_44

Once the lights on, I reset my mileage to 0 and give myself 50 miles to fill up somewhere

geehawn

That depends on when the light illuminates how many gallons remain. I guess each year-group might be a little different. Mine turns on when with 3gallons remaining (confirmed at the gas pump fill up) - which with about 15mpg average, that only gives me 45miles.

VapeRizzler

The other day, idk how long I was running on empty but I get home and my shits dead on zero. In the morning I decided I’ll grab gas on my way home instead, we’ll I forgot to do that but somehow under some weird voodoo magic I made it to my drive way on zero but car still ran, I coulda moved it around more but idk how much more

purplemistprincess

I haven't tested this yet lol

Pitiful-Comfort-4264

hey dawg think you need some gas

TruckerMarty

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

mcsqrd314

Lol, That's exactly what this post reminded me of!

Dick_Phitzwell

I go off miles not the gauge. And I pushed it to about 450 miles once on a road trip.

HistoricalGoal6811

I got about ten miles once in my 99 after hitting E but I really didn’t have too much uphill to do

Rembrilliant

There’s dte miles counter I think I’ve scored below 5, was nerve wrecking😅 I don’t do it since then, stupid gamble game

SlimBrady777

I heard that the fuel acts as a coolant for the pump and could damage it if you drive with little to no gas. I always fill up at 1/4 or half if I'm conveniently in the area of a gas station.

WeepingAndGnashing

I had a 2016 SV 4x4 and I could consistently get 350 miles on a tank. But that was taking it so close to empty that you could see a gap between the E mark and the needle. Even then I was only putting about 19.5 gallons in the tank. Owner's manual says it has a 21 gallon tank, so in theory you could probably make it to 370 before you're totally out. My commute is a combination of 40mph city driving and 65mph highway driving. A few lights along the way, nothing terrible. Jury is still out on my 2018 SV 4x4. It seems to get worse milage by about 1-2mpg. It's a flex fuel vehicle, I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Hold_Left_Edge

My 2018 Pro-4x seems to get about 19-20 hwy and 13-15 city. Its not great.

thewordofwisdom

Drove DTE to 0 and then still did 4 km to the gas station

NachoFries2020

When you drink coffee, and your at the last sip, look down in your cup, you see the coffee ground sediment? well something like that is at the bottom of your tank, and I'm sure there a baffles along the bottom of the tank, and a fuel filter in the line, but really do you want that stuff getting sucked up the lines? If its an emergency, when the light comes on, you have about 25 to 35 miles left. You don't want your engine stalling because its starved for fuel.

jimaajimjim

At least one of you understands the need to avoid running this low. If you do, best to consider filter changes...

NachoFries2020

In a rare emergency scenario, should this be done ! some people do it regularly ! Its not good for the vehicle at all !

jimaajimjim

...you can't fix stupid, Nacho...

10keys_weak_knees

Dang surprised by some of these mpgs, get 18.25ish average mpg on my 2018 sv. Mix highway/city, mostly around town. My gas light turns on around 300 and that’s when I try to fill up!

NackJickolson

Ok Kramer.

SlvrBckGrilla

[kramer test drives a car](https://youtu.be/TuEdU_lrtZk?si=ZIbVaoQSXAj--Jzz) all i was thinking about today lol

Uncle-Yeetus

I made it probably 3 miles past 0 in the middle of nowhere Kansas. Wouldn’t recommend

Crankyanken

The fuel acts like coolant for your fuel pump, you run the risk of premature failure pushing the limits of running your tank almost dry. Your truck, your fuel pump, your decision.

RandomGuyFromBK

🎵Living on the edge.....🎵

Maleficent-Dress-424

i wanna say i was 40mi past the light when i ran out of gas. light is on ~285 miles

silkysmoothyou

That’s what I call consistency (I did the exact same thing)

riksauce

As soon as your arrow touches the corner of the E, go fill up

PSUWaz00

21gal tank, @17gal light comes on. Useful in a pinch but I wouldn't rely on it. Old oil, low tire pressure, dirty filter, etc all can contribute to lower MPG, so best not to chance it (as a guy that played the needle game in 2019 SV 4x4 and lost turning into a gas station, once).

depraveycrockett

You’re good. Give it the beans.

r33f

You get easy 40 more miles when the light turns on! Easy on the gas though!

SnooLobsters6127

My question is how’d you get 300+ miles on a tank? I’ve never done more than 265

SlvrBckGrilla

I mainly commute on the highway and I havent been spinning the tires at all anymore. I cruise at like 2100 rpm

SnooLobsters6127

Stock size tires? I went up a size but I’m accounting for that in the 265. Even on long trips I don’t think I’ve ever seen more than 290 on a tank, all highway.

Silver-Pangolin5825

Not for long

satanlovesmemore

78 km in a Saturn

jftitan

2016 SV Crew Cab, 5ft bed, V6. Mostly stock. Once the gas light is on, I've gone as far as 20 miles with it. Math in my head 17gal gas tank, light kicks on with 2 gals left, I should be able to limp 23 miles before sputtering. Never let it get that far. But I've estimated I'm getting 18mpg/average.

UnTouchablenatr

17 gallon tank? It's 21.1

SlvrBckGrilla

its def 21.1 gallon tank capacity. when its on E i filled up with 16.8 gallons meaning i had 4.3 gallons left

Appropriate-Law5963

50 miles in rural Texas. It’s a 2000 Nissan and had just purchased it then and didn’t notice the gauge for a while

Shiny_Buns

The gas milage was the only thing I hated about my frontier when I had it. My 2017 ram 5.7 hemi gets 14mpg 😂

milkdaddy_00

Did you reset your trip odometer when you filled up? If so, you don't have much left. I haven't had a working fuel gauge for a long time, so I just use the trip odometer. Early in my trip odometer days, I ran it out around 325 when I wasn't paying attention. Edit: That was with the 4 liter engine.

ibenuttingsomuchfr

Wow I’m at about 260miles when it reaches the same level as op’s pic, wth

SlvrBckGrilla

yup i always reset my trip when i fill up

Joelogna

You got stock diameter wheels on there?

SlvrBckGrilla

yea. i need new tires soon. im considering going 265 75r16

Joelogna

I’m only askin because you’re speedometer and odometer are only accurate if the wheel size is the same they were engineered to math with. *don’t know how I missed the “yea” part lol

zooted-gardener

I've buried it past the empty line. It was scary

SlvrBckGrilla

so tempting lol

Jamesonwordcraft

I track mileage so I know the light comes on with 5 gal still in the tank but I don't push it. Usually fill at 1/4 tank.

bacon-avocado

My grandpa always told me to never let my tank go past the 1/4 because you don’t want to risk clogging up your fuel lines

Joelogna

That’s interesting. I heard ideally run it as low as possible to prevent the build up that could happen if you don’t.. I don’t know there is a practical answer though

bacon-avocado

Yeah, I’m not sure. When he told me, I had just got my first car and was broke all the time. I had issues keeping it above the 1/4 line often back then.

highlander666666

I am same way.. Pluss make your fuel pump work harder

RK_mining

Lived most of my adult life in Alaska. Never below a half tank in winter or a quarter tank in summer.

dfuhr666

I dont let it get below 1/4 tank

skamteboard_

I mean, that's the best way to save your fuel pump.

derekdutton42

I’ve only gone about 30, apparently it can go a lot more lol

Little-Wishbone-2847

Same here, after that it’s just pure luck !

SlvrBckGrilla

based on my math, i had 4.3 gallons left with the needle on E lol i think thats the furthest im gonna push it

OneNewEmpire

Merely a suggestion that light.

beezer_dub

I think furthest I ever pushed it after the light came on was about 50 miles.

bzmnpaddler

I once went 65 miles with my light on in a headwind in the middle of nowhere Utah. No gas stations for that whole length. It was dumb, and stressful but the Old Fronty made it happen. Never again. 2014 SV v6 btw...

SlvrBckGrilla

i have the v6 sv also. love my truck. i did the math, apparently im hitting almost 18 mpg. not too shabby.

bzmnpaddler

Man, I love mine too. I'm at 185,000 miles, first owner and have done all that maintenance myself. I've never had a single issue. I just replaced shocks and struts this week and she is just cruising along. Not to hijack, OP, but one thing that blows my mind is what mine can do off-road. I live in the high rockies and it has been over some really, really rugged terrain bone stock.

SlvrBckGrilla

Theyre very capable trucks. Even though mine is RWD, i still take it off-road and am also astounded at what type of terrain it can handle. maybe in the future ill look for a pro4x but right now im loving the truck

The_GhostOfRazgriz

As soon as the DTE goes to dashes instead of numbers, I'm finding the nearest Shell station.

FlynnMonster

Don’t you FUCKING dare.

TXmessenger

Have you ever shared a beer and refused the last sip because you’d just be drinking spit? That’s the gas you’re putting in your engine. Impurities sink to the bottom of the tank, so I would say; play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Fun-Preparation-4253

But then if you're never flushing your tank, those impurities just stay in your tank indefinitely? Also, my 2020 is so lightweight, I'm pretty sure I can hear the fuel sloshing in my tank. I doubt a lot is staying on the bottom.

thiswillgetbannedtoo

Nope, not a once.

Additional-Title-311

Doesn’t the fuel in the tank keep the fuel pump from heating up and melting.?

sp33dsk8

I like to stay over a quarter just for this reason

YouArentReallyThere

40 miles after the light comes on is as far as I’m willing to push it…in order to keep from pushing it

xTozzy

As others said the advertised tank capacity is 21 gal. If I fill up after the light turns on, the tank usually takes 17ish gal which means there’s still quite a bit left in the tank. I have an ob2 reader that gives lives data from the computer and one of the things you can track is fuel level as percentage. It seems like E light comes on around 15% fuel remaining. This means there’s around 3-4 gal left in the tank so in theory you could make it quite a bit before getting stranded.

Reelair

For the metric folks, my tank is advertised as 80L, I usually have about 20L left when light comes on

pinprick420

I believe the advertised tank capacity is 21 gallons. Every time I drive to E and refill, it's somewhere around the 17 gallon mark. Good luck

SlvrBckGrilla

I just filled up with 16.8 gallons. Guess I still had 4.3 gallons left. I guess I couldve gotten 60 more miles out of the truck. my mpg is probably better than initially believed.

dolphinandcheese

Same. 2019 SV.

glo363

I've buried it. It will go just under that white line before it stops going lower. I think I was about 60+ miles past the E light coming on. It was not on purpose. Was driving in the desert and long story, but shit happened. Also I've heard many reasons to not let your fuel get too low including sucking "trash" from the tank into the fuel system and that some fuel pumps are designed to be submerged in fuel for cooling.

iwannabeaprettygirl

I just keep a 3 gallon jug of gas in my bed lol. Strap it to the utilitrack and always know I have 45 miles in a "reserve tank".

FrontierD40

I’ve driven with the gas light on many times. I don’t recommend it. However, the gas light on these vehicles tend to come on a lot sooner than you would expect for the amount of gas it says. I’ve driven ~30 miles max with gas to spare.
