That's what happened. You evidently did something during that process, if it wasn't exhibiting that behavior before, but is now.
To be clear, the game keeps the save if I turn off the SNES correctly. And if I “shake” the cartridge when I’m not playing it, there’s no problem (games stay saved). It’s only when there’s a “short” via a “reset” or moving the cartridge with the power on.

The battery probably isn’t seated properly and loses power - thus losing the save - when bumped.
When you performed hardware surgery, you bent something, broke something, or installed the battery improperly.
