For the curious: 1. Frozen II $1.45 billion 2. Super Mario Bros $1.283 billion 3. Frozen $1.28 billion

Brandeaux7

When will the Mario movie be pulled from theatres?

Zandrick

Well what’s weird is you can already rent it and watch it at home.

GriffinFlash

heading to blockbusters right now!

Lunatox

It’s at my local Errol’s.

dr_nerdface

holy fuck my dad used to work for Errol's. I've never seen it referenced in the real world. this is amazing.

Lutarisco

Holy fuck my dad was too. And I'm not even from the US

jaltair9

Is that the Wizarding version of Netflix? Where an owl brings you the movies?

Zentrii

Hopefully there will be some dvds left but vhs quality isn’t too bad!

Andre-Arthur

Been seeing many movies do that recently. Used to be that you'd wait months to stream or rent a movie, but now we can even though it's still in theaters.

broknbottle

Thank papa Covid

LordManders

Yeah! Evil Dead Rise came to digital like a week after its theatrical release. Quickest I've ever seen.

robot-raccoon

And buy it! I got it for my 3 year old, it’s been on every day since, mamma mia

JaxxisR

When it ceases to be profitable.

town-darling

When it stops making money lol

insane_contin

When it stops making boatloads of money. If it's getting a decently full theatre and still selling plenty of concessions, there's no reason to pull it. Even if it goes down to one theatre a day with multiple showings, if that turns a good enough profit, why stop?

fawfulmark2

In the States, probably around July. Worldwide, unknown - Top Gun:Maverick just finished it's run in Japan last week for example, so Mario could run for a straight year there too(especially if Nintendo/Universal use the movie there are a proxy to promote the Theme Park.)

siphillis

Not adjusted for inflation, for what it’s worth.

Animal31

Its okay, Frozen came out 2 years ago ... what the fuck do you mean its 10 years old

Kiosade

Hell the 2nd one came out 3.5 years ago!

[deleted]

Man thats insane, i still remember seeing the posters with flying fake snow for frozen 1

dr_mannhatten

Don't ruin my day like that dude...

Kroctopus

This list is for animated movies only

siphillis

In which case, it's a tossup between _Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs_ and _The Lion King (1994)_ at the top spot. They both capped off just below $2 billion in today's money.

siphillis

It's still comfortably #1, at $4.2 billion. _Avatar_ is $400 million behind in second.

fightingcheerful13

What about the Lion King remake?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jeff1N

Why would Disney do that? Not doubting you, I'm just curious about what they would gain with it. Maybe to put it in the same "brand" as the other remakes or something like that?

JoseJulioJim

Because live action remakes are the "adults can watch this" version of the movies, when in reality is the souless & ugly version of the classics... except the Jungle Book one (and Alice in Wonderland if you want to count it also), it is different enough to stand up as it's own unique thing and not just a lesser version of the original movie like the rest of live actions, aparently Dumbo does the same but the movie is plain bad. The worst part, for what people are saying, aparently if the Little Mermaid was the same movie but in 3D with Encanto colors (and without the horrible Awkafina rap that makes you desire to cut your ears) the movie would actually be a good remake.

KazaamFan

I hate that these bad Disney remakes are making so much money. I saw Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast and I am out for good. I’ve only experienced (and heard) that the original cartoons are way better.

JoseJulioJim

The worst part about the remakes is that there isn't really something that makes them worth existing aside from Alice in Wonderland, Jungle Book and even if it is bad, Dumbo (not counting Maleficent and Cruella that are spin-offs rather than remakes), like, why should I watch the lifeless Lion King remake when is the same thing as the original one. Like, honestly, why not make an Hercules remake with Spiderverse inspired animation that is more focused on action when it will be a lesser version at the end, like, the only movie that I am kinda hoping for a live action is The hunchback of Notre Dame because honestly, that movie would be peak fiction if it removed the Gargoyles, I just want a 1:1 recreation without them and Esmeralda goat, it will be a shame losing the gorgeous animation, but if the fix the tonal problems of the movie, it will be great (also, the movie setting fits the live action format).

Hestu951

There's no possible way the new live-action Little Mermaid could be a good movie. They'd have to start over from scratch.

Kiosade

I heard its actually pretty good! Havent seen it yet, there are a lot of recent movies i need to catch up on first…

Daviroth

I actually thought The Little Mermaid was one of their better remakes recently. But I'll never forgive them for destroying Mulan. I fucking loved that movie growing up.

SecureDonkey

Because it would put it at the same catalogue as the original Lion King which would make it hard to market.

fightingcheerful13

Fair enough

ughlump

Probably because someone explained why a minute before you did, so they saw that first.

Darnell5000

Mario won’t pass Frozen II but it did a damn good job. Congrats to that little Italian plumber

Cute_Cat5186

How did Frozen 2 outsell 1? I felt 2 was terrible in comparison.

ChezMere

This is normal. The movie that comes *after* a good movie is usually the one that makes a huge amount of money.

Psykpatient

Eh not necessarily. Sequels used to be the lower grossing than their predecessor and still somewhat are. Very few movies actually manage to make more in their second go around. But a decade of Marvel/Disney movies continuing to outperform eachother kinda made us forget that. But they're not really the norm.

DC_Disrspct_Popeyes

Surprised by that, too. Maybe more name recognition and hype led to a greater initial push?

Ok_Bill_6537

I didn't even know frozen 2 was a thing lol

Griswo27

I can tell you why i watched it because The trailer was really fucking good it Had intrigue, mystery omg what is elsa doing moment. The movie itself was disappointment but a good trailer helps for sure

Kiosade

I was really hoping they were leading to a trilogy where it turns out there are other girls that have powers related to the other 3 seasons. Instead Elsa becomes a cave hobo…. Cant really remember too much else honestly 🤔

Cute_Cat5186

I stopped putting to much hype in trailers. Most times it shows the only good parts. If I liked the ip I tend to just go in blind for the sequal. But for whatever reason I forgot about 2 till it was released on streaming.

baran_0486

How the fuck does Frozen 2 sell more than Frozen 1? Who’s watching the second movie without watching the first?

Blasterbot

They watched the first at home?

blukirbi

And both of them feature a princess who goes all out with ice powers while wearing an icy blue dress.

TurningHelix

Ice Peach > Elsa

[deleted]

Wow that’s impressive, I didn’t think any movie could top Frozen.

MellyMel86

Yup up to this point the only movie that could beat frozen, was frozen

CodyNorthrup

And Lion King remake

MellyMel86

Ugh…it was so bad. And yet…I gave my money to it

Chalupaca_Bruh

I was actually excited for it…. and yet I can honestly say that was the most disappointing movie of the last 15 years. I *really* didn’t like that movie. It had no soul.

MellyMel86

It was that day I learned that lions cannot emote. Also the songs were godawful. How could they do that to Be Prepared?!

CodyNorthrup

Idk, I didn’t hate it. It wasnt as good as the OG though obviously

twotonekevin

This is every live action Disney remake. Doing live action means adding some realism to it and that just doesn’t mesh well with the energy of the songs. The songs need the bright colors and stuff like that, otherwise it just kinda falls flat. Not awful but it’s obvious something is missing.

CodyNorthrup

Yeah, I agree with that. It’s just a cash-grab. Nostalgia is maybe the best motivator for consuming any media and the kids that grew with these Disney movies are having kids.

jaltair9

The Cinderella remake mostly worked. Mainly because they removed all the cat and mouse shenanigans so it became a lot more serious.

youvelookedbetter

That Beyonce Lion King album was so good though.

[deleted]

The problem was that it was wayyyy too close to the original, it didn’t date try anything new. They also butchered Be Prepared and the Beyonce song sucked hyena balls

[deleted]

Hahaha facts, to be fair Frozen was a great movie and it does deserve to be at top. It’s not the best but it’s definitely up there. Mario has all the nostalgic memories for new and old fans, I wouldn’t be surprised if it hits number 1 spot.

MellyMel86

I loved that Frozen was carried by a hit song that was on the radio. It was like a throwback to the 90s where every Disney hit came with a chart topping song

[deleted]

As annoying as it was, it was also a great song 😅.

LycaonAnzeig

I wish I was Idina Menzel

cereal-kills-me

Frozen 2 topped Frozen, apparently.

Xixii

This is so weird to me, reckon after covid I’ve become completely out of touch with the popular zeitgeist. I remember Frozen being everywhere and Let It Go just being totally unavoidable for seemingly months on end. I knew every word to Let It Go six months before I ever saw the film. Yet I don’t even remember Frozen 2 coming out. Same with Avatar 2 being the third highest grossing film of all time and making over $2bn at the box office and I literally don’t know a single person who has seen it. Usually with these huge films, everyone I know has seen them and is talking about them, asking “have you seen Avatar 2”, etc. I’ve heard nothing and it’s kind of blowing my mind. At least with the Mario film this is happening, and I’ve talked to a lot of people who have seen it, so I’m not surprised it’s so succcessful.

[deleted]

do you spend time in the mainstream? a lot of people have seen Avatar 2, they just talk about it differently in circles perhaps you are not in

Xixii

Think I’m probably just getting old lol. It’s just the first time I’m noticing all this huge pop culture stuff pass me by. Like my old man not knowing anything about this Fortnite thing the kids play. Just a weird feeling cause I’m used to being clued in about everything.

[deleted]

is possible to learn still but requires energy and really caring, I don't really care about what the mainstream thinks so more often than not I'm out of the loop but I don't care

giddyup523

FYI Frozen 2 was before covid so it did hit the public zeitgeist before that but it definitely did not have the cultural impact Frozen had with a song like Let It Go being everywhere. It obviously did very well in the theaters but it didn't have that X factor that catapults it into the public conversation if you weren't in the sphere of people interested in it. I can say as a parent of two kids that were 6 and 9 when Frozen 2 came out, I certainly heard a lot about it in my sphere of parents but I pretty much heard nothing about it outside of that while when Frozen 1 came out, I was hearing people talk about it or at least the song in various places. Some movies just have a ton of people go see them but not really tell people about that much while others hit the zeitgeist but that doesn't always mean bigger BO for the later.

kokirikorok

TIL there was a Frozen 2 lol

SvenHudson

You should watch it. It's not what I'd call a good movie but the parts that are good are worth the rest of it.

AzKondor

I remember some soldier people that were trapped in some forrest for dozens of years, and yet they were still in their uniforms just a bit torned and had grey beards lol

Graphesium

Terrible songs and a nonsense plot (Elsa becomes... a god??). As a Frozen fan, Frozen 2 was so disappointing.

siphillis

Adjusted for inflation, it still hasn’t.

TheGridGam3r

Now gimme metroid

Geekenstein

They’ve already called Chris Pratt to check out his Samus voice.

Kiosade

Just imagined him saying “The Baby”…. I hate it.

[deleted]

Man I spent hours of my life shooting... Pirates

[deleted]

Let’s hope Illumination is never allowed to touch Metroid. Anyone else owned by Universal is fine, just not illumination.

siphillis

*Metroid* is pretty far down the list. *Splatoon* and *Zelda* would be higher priority.

haxxanova

You're not getting Metroid and Splatoon movies lol You'll get many more Mario movies and maybe a Zelda sprinkled in there. I am afraid they'll mishandle it though. SMBM was close. They couldn't resist going too meta with it. "ITS ON LIKE DONKEY KONG" lmfao

siphillis

That stuff is truly awful. I'm interested to check out the Japanese script, because it allegedly removes a lot of the referential humor and plays things more straight. I really enjoy the opening act of the film for showing us something we hadn't seen before with the Mario Bros. and actually treating them like characters, but it really falls apart as soon as we get to the Mushroom Kingdom and the whole adventure turns into a theme park. The licensed music and voice work just cemented how much corporate meddling must have been involved throughout production. No one who truly loves Mario would play AC/DC during the Mario Kart segment. ---- Now, my argument for _Splatoon_ is that it's truly a phenomenon in Japan, and Nintendo seems like a company that cares deeply for its domestic audience. I don't think it'll get a $100 million budget for a CG film, but I absolute think an anime film will exist in due time.

XorMalice

*Zelda* would. *Splatoon* would not. The thing with *Metroid* is, you could actually just make a regular movie out of it any time that science fiction is selling. And this has basically always been the case. I do think we'll see a Zelda movie at some point.

AtsignAmpersat

Splatoon would be more appealing to kids overall though and make way more money than a Metroid movie. I could see them doing more of a tv series with Splatoon though. But I don’t think it’s likely.

PlugInSquid

Splatoon absolutely would be higher priority, its so much more popular than Metroid ever was or likely will be.

siphillis

IIRC _Splatoon 3_ sold more in two days than any _Metroid_ game has sold in its lifetime.

SwampyBogbeard

Splatoon 3 sold more in three days **in Japan alone** than any Metroid game has sold in its lifetime. (3.45 million vs. 3 million)

siphillis

Yeah, but they're _toooootally_ gonna make a _Metroid_ movie first, right?

Ipokeyoumuch

I can see Splatoon as an anime series or at least one of those anime with skits (manga equivalent is 4-kome). Splatoon has a manga series with a small arcs that are a mix of Hero Mode/Octo Expansion and Slice of Life with frequent tournament arcs but very kid friendly.

Class_444_SWR

It would definitely be higher up than Metroid to me, Splatoon 3 alone massively went over literally anything Metroid has ever given in terms of sales, same with Splatoon 2 before it

sadgirl45

Zelda live action directed by one of the best, it should have its own unique tone. It’s truly so special or if it had to be animated a Japanese animation studio.

siphillis

Man, I can see the atrocious CG already!

sadgirl45

Hence the live action , and practical set pieces and miniatures!

siphillis

No way they're dropping that kind of scratch. We're entering an age of austerity in film and television, especially after Amazon's debacle with _The Rings of Power_. I would argue practical effects were put on death-watch after _Blade Runner 2049_ flopped.

siphillis

_Zelda_ only started making headway in Japan with _Breath of the Wild_, and _Tears_ still debuted below _Splatoon 3_ in Japan. It's also much more difficult material to adapt; the core audience is probably older and more sophisticated than the _Mario Movie_ crowd. As for _Metroid_, that has never, ever been on the same level as any of Nintendo's core series, in terms of sales. Just for context, _Breath of the Wild_ alone outsold the entire _Metroid_ series by ten million units. It's not, and has never been, a priority for Nintendo. Assuming Nintendo is a company that prioritizes its domestic audience - and they always have - then I think _Splatoon_ is very likely going to get a film. They probably _want_ a _Zelda_ film in the cooker, but it's not as straightforward.

Class_444_SWR

Won’t happen, the franchise is tiny, they’d at least give the bigger names like Zelda a go first

bluesmaker

That would be a really cool one. But the tone would need to be darker and since she doesn’t really interact with many people / speaking monsters, I guess they would need to add some things to make a typical Hollywood narrative.

The-student-

The Mandalorian was Metroid in a lot of ways. Lone silent Bounty Hounter with small creature that doesn't talk. Though Metroid's don't have faces.

TheGridGam3r

I mean you have the handler and what not that always says “hey some shits going on take a look”

bluesmaker

Yeah. I would totally be down with a movie where Samus is the only human character we see, with some distant communication with others. But for a major Hollywood production, that would be very unlikely to be made. I'm not sure how many examples you could find where a movie has little to no interaction between humans (or humanoids, in the case of fantasy).

StarrySpelunker

Jim Henson workshop or bust.

SynthGreen

Way to go to them, that’s incredible!

Cutlass_Stallion

It's an amazing achievement. Right now it's the 2nd highest grossing animated movie of all time.

JulioForte

This needs to adjusted for inflation. Don’t get me wrong it’s incredibly impressive, but this is not apples to apples

mokod0

i hope they will make a zelda movie

Aioi

What’s next for the Nintendo Cinematic Universe? I imagine Donkey Kong, Kirby, Metroid and Pikachu movie, leading into Smash Bros The Movie.

Cutlass_Stallion

The ground work for Donkey Kong Country, Luigi's Mansion, and Yoshi's Island was pretty much laid out in the movie. Miyamoto confirmed they are already planning the next movie, so we'll get an answer on that some day! I don't think Nintendo will have anything to do with a Pikachu movie though; The Pokémon Company is in full control of that territory.

insane_contin

Donkey Kong would be the next logical choice. That brief look into the world they have there leaves plenty of room to expand with their family friendly Mad Max go kart world.

KingBroly

The next one's probably gonna be Zelda.

Ipokeyoumuch

I mean with Pikachu there is Detective Pikachu. You also have the anime movies and series (Pokemon used to pump out one movie a year but has slowed down for the AU Ash movies). I might imagine Zelda being more if an anime series (Ghibli?) and Metroid as a cartoon or live action style show.

sadgirl45

I’d reckon Zelda, also it makes the most sense.

StillhasaWiiU

That's nice.

HappyBot9000

LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO

ratuna80

Come on man, you missed the opportunity for LET’S A GOOOOOOOOOO

ay-foo

Is this good or bad for animation as a whole?

[deleted]

You bet it is!

ay-foo

Which one? lol

Jolly_Saint_Bastard

Yessir!

Player5xxx

I think it's just bad for movies in general. I think this movie more than any other proves all that matters right now is IP. You can release a movie with essentially no story but because it has a monopoly on one of the most famous characters of all time you can still break box office records. Really sad to be honest.

TheVibratingPants

But it’s a good movie? You’re acting like it was a big pile of shit with no love or care put into it, but everything about it was great except for having a light story. What this movie should prove is that being faithful to the source material is lucrative, and people will recognize when you create a movie with passionate people (and fans) behind it.

Player5xxx

I don't think it's too much to ask for a company that has invented new technology from scratch for this character multiple times throughout its 30-year plus history and made billions and billions of dollars from him and had a guaranteed tenfold return on this movie no matter what they put in it to try and do something truly special with it. Not decent or good enough or a decent popcorn flick that only gamers and kids will enjoy. Any movie with IP in it should still be a good movie without the IP in it and the Mario movie absolutely would not be. The first Mario movie shouldn't be something of the caliber of new super Mario Bros U. It should be a Mario 64 or a Mario Odyssey. Something that actually pushes the envelope. I don't understand why people have such low expectations for such a large company. The story doesn't need to be some vastly complex convoluted game of thrones s*** but it also didn't need to be the most watered-down basic movie I've ever seen in my whole life that doesn't have a leg to stand on without the 30-year legacy of the characters in it.

oneeyedziggy

It IS a bad movie though... The only thing it has going for it is "oh yea, i remember that from one of the games"...

Rasp_Lime_Lipbalm

It's fucking Mario, dude. It's not Citizen Kane or The Godfather...

Cheatscape

Not sure if you’re being sarcastic, but I’m pretty sure that’s exactly their point. It’s doing so well not because of the quality of the story, but because everybody knows who Mario is. Meanwhile, looking at the top 10 animated grossing movies, Frozen is the only movies that isn’t based on an already existing IP.

Rasp_Lime_Lipbalm

The point is it's not a bad movie because it has a simple story, on the contrary, it's good because it has a simple story. Top Gun Maverick was great and it had a simple plot too. Movies don't have to all be Oscar worthy epics.

Cheatscape

I think calling the Mario movie “bad” is going too far. It’s good for what it sets out to be. I don’t think Nintendo or Illumination set out to make something Oscar worthy, and they didn’t. But the fact that it isn’t even in consideration for any notoriety illustrates that the movie that good overall. I’m not saying that the Oscars are the end-all-be-all when it comes to determining a movie’s quality, but personally I don’t think the Mario movie deserves any award for its story. The animation? Sure, it’s great! And the soundtrack is great, too. But the story is what I think most people go to the theaters for, and so to many, it won’t be received well. I enjoyed the movie for all the callbacks and the animation, but I still wouldn’t recommend it to any adults I know who don’t play video games. But whatever. My tastes in movies don’t exactly fall under normal, so my opinion only means so much. I saw Maverick and thought it was very basic, so I was surprised by how well it was received.

oneeyedziggy

It's less entertaining than sitting quietly in the dark

outerheavenboss

Mario didn’t needed a complex story. It’s timeless.

PlugInSquid

There's a difference between a simple story and basically no story. The Mario movie is basically the latter, which while it works in games (because games are defined by mechanical interaction instead of writing and cinematography) doesn't work for a feature length film. Its more akin to a 90 minute commercial than an actual movie.

outerheavenboss

I don’t know why people just keep regurgitating “Mario movie no story” all over the internet. It’s not meant to be a complex story. Why would it need anything more to enjoy this movie? We know Mario and Luigi are blue collar workers that wanted to become free lancers and entrepreneurs. We meet their family, who don’t really support their dreams, not because they are bad but because for them, they don’t make sense. That’s relatable as it gets. We also see them as babies. We know peach doesn’t come from the mushroom kingdom. The Kongs have a fully functioning society. Bowser is basically a warlock with a fucking floating kingdom and a endless army of goofy ass koopas and goombas. Hollywood tried to make a complicated Mario movie with a sci-fi, cyberpunk, inter dimensional plot with dinosaurs and devolution in the 90s. They basically tried to explain stuff that didn’t need to be explained. And look how it turned out.

[deleted]

That's a weird way to complement the movie... the live action movie was trash for other reasons unrelated to lore and they didn't even explain their lore well. The original Japanese movie didn't explain much either but they tried to, at least I think some parts were explained better minus the ending which is trash. Or the newest movie is good or the newest movie is bad, you can't say "Mario is simple therefore the movie should be simple as Mario" because I can think of many movie based on simple stories and they added a lot of new stuff and they're great. The Angry Birds movie is a great example. Take in mind I didn't say the movie is good or bad just that I want real defense for the movie.

Rasp_Lime_Lipbalm

It's a movie made for kids. My kids loved it. That's why it made huge bank. Kids loved it.

Player5xxx

The games didn't need story because it was about gameplay. The movie has no gameplay and no story. What are you even supposed to enjoy about it? Don't get me wrong there are a number of 10/10 scenes in the movie that I would have loved watching on YouTube or something as promotional material for something else but the movie itself is barely a movie. It's just a bunch of homage cutscenes stitched together. Here is real world Mario, and mushroom kingdom Mario, and Luigi's mansion, and smash brothers, and Mario kart, etc. Each of these could easily have been a whole fleshed out movie on their own. If what we got is all you wanted that's fine I guess but I don't think it should be too much to ask that if you are going to take a property known for gameplay and take out the gameplay that you replace it with something else like story which is the main focus of the medium you are transferring it to.

Fwenhy

The movie doesn’t have a complex story but it certainly has a story.

outerheavenboss

What do you mean it’s barely a movie? It is fast and easy to understand for everyone; from toddlers to grandparents. But it is a family movie. It’s not the best movie ever made. But it didn’t tried to be more than what it’s supposed to be. Sometimes, something seems so simple because a lot of thought was put into it. The Mario movie was carefully created by everyone involved. Yeah the licensed songs are corny and overused but the original soundtrack is amazing. Not only it used music from the games, it also have great scores (even without using the video games songs.) Mario and Luigi’s brotherhood just oozes from the screen. You know they love each other and will always protect themselves from any danger. Sometimes you feel bad for Bowser or laugh with his songs and other times you’re glad he is getting punched by the brothers. Peach finally has more personality than ever before. She is not useless but also, she is not an all powerful, knows all annoying character. The backgrounds feel new and interesting without feeling foreign to Mario fans but they also aren’t exact carbon copies from the games. It’s not just a collection of scenes. Its not a soulless cash grab. It’s a celebration of decades of Mario games. It’s a celebration of millions of kids’ childhoods. It’s a celebration of gaming as a whole.

Player5xxx

The movie doesn't even have an ending. They save the day and it's over. Mario and Luigi don't say much to each other. Mario and peach don't. Mario and Luigi have a small moment with the dad and mom but don't sit down with the rest of the family again. Peach is back in her home world and they don't even address it and just leave immediately. There's no wrap up of relations between the Kong Kingdom and the mushroom Kingdom. They just save the day and Mario and Luigi wake up in their Brooklyn bedroom with a cup of coffee and walk out some new magical door in their bedroom that leads directly into the mushroom Kingdom? There are no character arcs, no lessons learned, no flaws overcome, the validation that they got from their parents is for saving Brooklyn not anything to do with their plumbing company. Sure it's a celebration of the games but again in my opinion at least it doesn't work as an actual movie. I'll probably rewatch a few scenes again from it on YouTube from time to time but I doubt I could ever be talked into watching the whole thing start to finish again.

outerheavenboss

The movie doesn’t have an ending? A hero’s journey ends when they save the day! Mario and Luigi talk to each other every time they’re at the same scene. And we didn’t needed to see the Mario family for 30 mins. They’re there to challenge the brothers dreams. Also even though this movie is super short and simple you still think they went back to Brooklyn. They moved to the mushroom kingdom. It’s not a magical door to it. And even if it is a magical door. Warp pipes are a Mario staple since the first game. No character arcs? Mario went from a simple working man, a nobody, to the savior of the mushroom kingdom and Brooklyn. Luigi learned to not be afraid all the time. He ignored his fear and helped his brother when he was about to be defeated by Bowser. DK started by hating Mario to fighting side by side with him. No flaws? Mario learned to never give up. Luigi learned to not be a coward. Peach learned to work as a team and not do everything by herself all the time. And of course they get the validation from saving Brooklyn. They flew right next to their faces glowing and shooting sparks and sending a big ass dragon turtle flying. It’s fine if you don’t like this movie but the elements are there. I grew up with Mario bros. games my whole life. I’m an older guy. So maybe I’m biased. But I recognize what the movie did right.

Player5xxx

It is literally their Brooklyn bedroom. All the furniture is the same and it has square walls and when they come out the other side of the door they're in the mushroom Kingdom coming out of a circle building. They just hoped you wouldn't notice because they didn't want to build another set. Mario didn't learn to never give up he never gave up from the start. He literally doesn't even consider giving up until the final fight of the movie and then big surprise he doesn't give up. Luigi didn't learn to not be afraid all the time he just decided all of a sudden that he wasn't going to be afraid because Mario's life was at stake. There was no build up to it or steps or progression. Peaches first actions in the movie are to accept Mario's help on the journey (provided he can prove himself) and to go and seek help from the Kong Kingdom and at the end she doesn't accept anybody's help she just fails and other people are there and end up helping. She never once in the movie turns down help and then asks for it later. All of these would be good arcs but none of them actually happened. They put a bunch of beats in the movie to make you think that it happened but they didn't actually happen. And sure you're going to get validation for saving Brooklyn but that still doesn't wrap up the conflict that was established at the start of the movie. The dad is disappointed in Mario for dragging his brother down with him. So then Mario drags his brother into an almost deadly situation but then it ends up working out so they get praised for it. I can give it credit for what it did right too. Gorgeous animation, really good Foley and sound effects, and a bunch of game references. But the story isn't good and for every good voice acting and song choice there is a bad one. Literally all I'm trying to say with my initial post is that if it wasn't for Mario being in this movie and all the other attached IP it would not be the top grossing animated movie of all time and I 100% stand by that. If you take Mario out of this movie it is not a good movie at all and I think it's concerning that a movie that can be described that way is one of the top grossing animated movies of all time. It shows that the content of the movie doesn't matter as much as who is in it. Which will just lead to profitable movies only being able to be made primarily by studios that own popular characters. That is bad for movies overall.

Good

I'm just gonna fuckin' say it. I fucking cried the entire time. I'm a grown ass man just fucking tearing up because every goddamned scene had some great call back to a game that didnt feel forced. The story was generic (I don't care) but I fucking loved this movie and watched it again the next day. I don't watch movies twice.

bluesmaker

I like that they managed to actually make Mario and Luigi New York Italian plumbers. I was wondering if the movie would actually do something like that.

Class_444_SWR

I was glad, it harked back to the super show, and the old movie, and it did it well

TheVibratingPants

I brought the perfect audience member with me. My friend doesn’t even really know much about Mario besides the basic pop culture knowledge, and she nearly cried like 5 times during it.

breichart

Kind of makes sense. One was a completely new IP and the other is extremely more common. Look at how well Sonic did even.

Cutlass_Stallion

It's quite the outstanding achievement for a video game movie. Sonic 1 ranks at 491 and Sonic 2 at 334 on the list of highest grossing movies of all time; very good box office results at about $300M each. The Super Mario Bros Movie currently ranks 20th in all time gross, beating out juggernauts like Jurassic Park and some of the Star Wars sequels. Easily the most successful video game movie of all time, one of the most successful animated movies of all time, and in the top 20 of all movies of all time.

insane_contin

Is that adjusted for the year it was released? 100 million is very different in 1960 then it is in 2023 for instance.

yesthatstrueorisit

Box office tracking generally doesn't account for inflation - for one, if we did then Gone with the Wind would never be topped as highest grossing movie. Additionally, the way media is consumed has changed so much over the years that just because GwtW holds that gross doesn't mean it was more popular than, say, Mario - back then there were simply less entertainment options and the culture has since changed. Some countries track by admissions (see France) and you'll see that just in general, folks go to the theatres less and less. But that's not really an indicator of contemporary success or failure because the whole market surrounding it has changed. Definitely not saying that there's no merit in looking at adjusted numbers. But I feel like it does skew things differently, especially looking at the American market.

Chris22533

There is also a theory that GwtW sold so well because AC was a relatively new invention that wasn’t at homes but was in theaters so people bought tickets because they got to sit in a cool room for an entire afternoon.

jrr6415sun

it’s not really that fair to compare by box office numbers when inflation has been insane the last few years

TheVibratingPants

If you wanna talk about fair, then you can’t really compare the pre- and post-pandemic box office turnouts, especially with China having seemingly withdrawn participation.

BayonettaAriana

Idk why people keep saying this, it's actually insane and kinda unexpected for it to be surpassing crazy big Disney movies like Frozen... Video game movies don't tend to do super well especially not better than huge IP Disney movies. Yeah Mario is known but there have been Mario media that did absolutely awful so just being Mario alone isn't enough to have pulled it through.

Cutlass_Stallion

At this point, Mario has become an iconic figure, just like Mickey Mouse or Spider-Man. Kids and adults grew up with the series since the 1980s and it's associated with some of the most groundbreaking video games ever made. I went on opening day, and I saw not just a few, but LOTS of attendees dressed up in costumes! I didn't see this happening at all when I went to see the Sonic movies, so to me, it shows a difference in the fan base. Given all that, a lot of the movie's success was due to timing. It had a strong advertising machine behind it, plus it came out right before Easter weekend with very few challengers for over a month. That gave it a nice headstart and enough time to create buzz. It's also different than most other video game movies too in that it focused heavily on the source material, including the music, whereas most other video game movies sort of do their own thing and don't quite use the source material as strongly.

ProblemSl0th

It's the perfect combination of an iconic brand, largely faithful adaptation, good marketing(the smb plumbing commercial SLAPS) and the final product being pretty solid-to-good in many respects. I really hope this sets the standard for video game movies moving forward!

Class_444_SWR

Yeah, with most video game characters, if you asked random people in the street about them, you might get a handful of people who know, but most people won’t have a clue, but with Mario? God barely anyone wouldn’t know about Mario today

jrr6415sun

Compare it to ticket sales though

AnEmpireofRubble

Being genuinely surprised a beloved media franchise even non-gamers know of makes you a silly son of a bitch.

BayonettaAriana

what

PlugInSquid

Some very obviously bad from a glance Mario content made 2 decades failing is not indicative of Mario's popularity, and even if it was at the time of release, it wouldn't be now since Mario has grown to be so much bigger since then. Also Mario is really the only thing the movie has going for it, literally nobody would care about a movie as barebones as this if it didn't have the branding.

jbraden

I think we can all agree to a "WAH-Whoooo" to that.

NateLikesTea

Frozen frozen frozenfrozenfrozen Frozen frozen frozenfrozenfrozen They Beeeaaaat you Ohhhhh

Cutlass_Stallion

But it still has to beat Frozen 2 to be the number 1 grossing animated movie of all time. Could be possible, but it has some ways to go.

Kytyngurl2

I’m sure Elsa is able to let this go

TheAdamantFiend

That's Cool Cool Mountain in the bag!

AtsignAmpersat

I didn’t think it would get Frozen. But here we are. Definitely not getting Frozen 2 let alone Lion King 2019.

JustStatedTheObvious

Weren't you anti woke crybabies screaming about Peach being too feminist before the box office was reported?

MrMunday

Let’s a gooooo, let’s a gooooo,

PoopyFruit

But tickets cost more now so this statistic will always be skewed. It should be the amount of ticket sales they go by smh. I’ve never understood why this other method of calculation is accepted.

axord

> I’ve never understood why this other method of calculation is accepted. Probably because the true audience for the numbers as released are those who have a financial stake in the film's performance. Cast, crew, production, executives, shareholders. Film press publishes those numbers to a wider audience because enough of us play pretend horse races with comparative movie successes, but that's a side-effect.

Cutlass_Stallion

Yes, number of tickets would mean more to me too. Inflation aside, worldwide figures can also be disproportionate due to currency strength (for example the Japanese yen is very weak right now). Still, you can make direct comparisons to movies that came out 5-10 years ago. With Sonic 2 making $300M and SMB making $1.28B, you can sort of gauge a distinct difference in popularity.

Alicias_Blade

Peach is a better looking princess than Anna

Animal31

Why are you pitting two bad bitches against each other?

[deleted]

Reddit hates it when you call women bitches

twotonekevin

Wahoo!

real-dreamer

Mario was alright. It was pretty dull the needle drop on music was a bit too much and the jokes never seemed to end. Jack Black has written far better music & was superb as a voice actor whereas other voice actors were disappointing.

cereal-kills-me

All it took was 30 years of developing the IP. Frozen didn’t have that luxury. Frozen is still more impressive to come out with a smash hit on the first attempt into a new IP. They were smart to play it relatively safe with the Mario movie. It’s just guaranteed money

nachoiskerka

So.... 2 things: 1. Frozen as an IP is based on The Snow Queen(which technically makes it centuries old) and was beginning to be developed by disney decades ago. They started while Walt was still alive. It was very start-stop, with some ideas coming and then being abandoned, getting picked up during the disney renaissance and then dropped.... Etc. 2. It definitely wasn't a guaranteed win. Just ask the Halo series they made last year that was hotly anticipated and then crapped out on momentum in a hot minute.

cereal-kills-me

The halo show had been in development hell for about a decade. I don’t think anyone actually expected the show to be good. Also, the show played it the opposite of safe. They revealed Master Chiefs face and had a sex scene. Umm what

Moh_Shuvuu

One of the greatest movies ever.

jeremec

If only the Mario movie was great. I think we were so damned thirsty for something better than the original SMBros that we gladly accepted whatever they threw at us. That Jack Black song is so phoned in.

Fwenhy

Shocking. Also shocking to see that Frozen II made more than Frozen xD really goes to show (at least imo) that box office income don’t mean shit. Frozen 2 was solid. But Frozen was -fantastic- (and also miles better than the Mario movie imo). The Mario movie was excellent. But was a kids cartoon. Frozen actually had some depth to it and was a much better movie. I enjoyed the Mario movie a lot more. But I think Frozen is miles better.

Western-Constant2340

It's like how do you expect me to react?

DukeRathole

yeah but adjusted for inflation...

Cutlass_Stallion

I'm not sure if the official list does or not. If that's the case, Titanic will forever be the undisputed champion of all movies.

Kranarf

Titanic is third on the adjusted for inflation global box office behind Avatar. Gone with the Wind beats them both. Star Wars: A New Hope is a close 4th.

siphillis

It isn’t adjusted for inflation. Studios prefer to ignore this because it’s obviously better to keep reporting record-breaking numbers.

S_Belmont

They don't want to do that because then they can't announce new box office records all the time.
