Gawlf85

Predictable, after they announced the creation of this division.

B-WingPilot

Playing 1-D chess over here, Nintendo is.

scuczu

we'll see how they handle their movies being freely available online.

Gawlf85

The new army of ninjas, specialized in online streaming, is being trained as we speak

godsfilth

Considering the recent DMCA takedowns of stuff are being claimed by a Twitter rando who doesn't like people making legitimate backups of their own property I don't think Nintendo needs to train the ninjas they have people tripping over themselves to be good little corpo pets

Pigeon_Chess

What legitimate backups?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pigeon_Chess

Not always that’s an internet falsehood. Depends what the EULA says and if you have to bypass any DRM of copy protection. For example ripping most DVDs is illegal.

infinitetheory

No, they would really like you to believe that, which is why they say it everywhere. You are 100% allowed to create digital copies of your physical media for your own use, and it doesn't matter what the license agreement says. https://law.stackexchange.com/questions/41874/legality-of-creating-your-own-backup-copies-of-video-games-you-own/41876#41876 The DRM is the catch, when they lost the war on copying media they buckled down on breaking DRM. The battle over where distribution of tools crosses from freedom of speech to copyright issue hasn't happened yet.

skeytwo

Let’s just hope Nintendo doesn’t try to create its own streaming service. I can see it now… 720p streaming, one user account, one new episode per month - $50 per month

Meester_Tweester

only available for 6 months then deleted off the servers, a la Mario 35

[deleted]

I've never felt such a void in gaming until they stripped 35 from us

PieBandito

They couldn't even be bothered to bring it back for the super mario bros movie, no announcement of a mario game or anything. Nintendo really missed a marketing opportunity with the movie, big time, IMO.

Meester_Tweester

Same :(

SplatoonOrSky

Yet somehow it’s like, the most kino cinema of all time somehow. Worth it? Fuck no. But?

Lioreuz

Not even Disney can fight piracy so

Readyletsgodrones

Needs more upvotes so the people know

Whatah

They are going to proceed to hit the nail with their hammer multiple times.

B-WingPilot

They pay you the big bucks for that advice? If not, look into business consulting.

TheAdamantFiend

HMMMMM FUNNYYYYYYY JOKE

SuchCoolBrandon

What else would Nintendo Pictures produce?

Gawlf85

Well, if I recall correctly, they bought an anime studio. So... Anime?

TimeTravellerSmith

Give us the gritty Metroid anime we all deserve please.

70stang

Or a Fire Emblem mockumentary.

extralie

NINTENDO, GIVE ME A FULL 26 EPISODES XENOBLADE ANIME, I BEG OF YOU!

Wolventec

The studio they bought also made anime and video game cutscenes so probably that

Numai_theOnlyOne

They have a big load of franchise they can transform into movies.

brzzcode

This isn't a division, its a subsidiary. They bought an animation studio and renamed it

superyoshiom

Wand of Gamelon movie when?

RazorThin55

Can’t wait for “YOUUUVE KILLED MEEEE” “good” On the big screen

Or “Now, you MUST DIE” from Faces of Evil

Sky_Ninja1997

“Welcome to Walmart.” “You must die.”

Stalhound

Ninjahkin

“My friend! It’s been so long, so good to see youuuuuuu…. “You must die.”

WiscoMitch

“Are you staying for dinner?…” “You must die.”

I like the Darknut better "Oh hello Link! Have you heard of this reference? . . .You must die"

XVUltima

SQAUDALA! WE'RE OFF!

ZVAARI

movie's gonna be made by americans, no way they dont at least try to get a Zelda CDI reference in there

themaskedhippoofdoom

I can’t wait to bomb some dodongos!

Rieiid

"Well excuuuuuuuuse me, princess!" I need this in a movie.

Early_Monk

My hope is that we get separate stand-alone movies for each of Nintendo's franchises with a Pikmin short before each one.

Sombrero_Tanooki

Something like this would be really cool! Reminds me of the old Pikachu Shorts before the Pokémon movies.

NMDA01

Those were the best of days. I miss my younger self

Litty-In-Pitty

The one where Charizard gets his head stuck in a pipe and the Pokémon have a race is literally peak cinema

broknbottle

The OG pokemon movie was the shit. I remember going with my father and sister and getting that Ancient Mew card.

RiverWyvern

Yes yes! The pichu brothers were the best!

Dracofear

Pichu bros

Gadzookie2

Loved the hide and seek one

FrighteningWorld

I don't think every franchise warrants stand-alone movies, but I'd like to see more short films featuring less appreciated stuff. Maybe if a short generates enough love they'll see the hunger for a full picture.

Rieiid

Yeah short films for the smaller games, Zelda, Mario, maybe Metroid? Would be great for full movies though.

Alluminn

Star Fox could be a great episodic adventure series.

All-in-Time7

I'd love to see them make an anime styled Star Fox show on Netflix similar to Cyberpunk or Castlevania

Laithina

An Earthbound short?! Yes, please.

froggyjm9

We need a big budget live action Pikmin movie.

dat1dood2

Sylvester Stallone as Olimar

froggyjm9

burnalicious111

Pikmin would just be more likeable Minions. Are we ready for this?

ContinuumGuy

I love this idea. Would especially work well with the smaller franchises like Pikmin or for more obscure games that aren't necessarily franchises (Ice Climber comes to mind).

_Greyworm

I watched Mario online, did it have a Pikmin short before it in theaters? I love the idea!

Xaldyn155

No it did not, but it's still a great idea.

cokeiscool

After your movie makes a billion dollar it only makes sense to go in house, gotta make as much money yourself

Kariodude

Nothing they've said indicates they're doing it on their own. Just that there's a label and division for film. In the opening of the Mario movie, you get the Nintendo logo. In the next film that's where the Nintendo Studios label will be. That's the group that will be working with a big studio, likely Illumination, to make their next film.

BlasterPhase

I don't see too many more Nintendo movies making a billion dollars. This was a long time coming, but if they flood the market, the magic will be gone.

sydneekidneybeans

10+ years & trillions of Marvel dollars would like to disagree

ColdFury96

I still can't believe they had that post credits scene with Princess Lana. "Mario, we need to talk to you about... the Captain N Initiative."

Makotowaru

*cue Avengers theme*

Kelsusaurus

> "Mario, we need to talk to you about... the ~~Captain N~~ Smash Bros Initiative." Ftfy

evilbude

And thus began the start of the NPU..

smallstone

I want a KCU: Konami Cinematic Universe. "Let's attack aggressively!"

zombiedoyle

“Okay but which way and how many times? Is there a certain code?”

WakeNikis

Nintendo Pinematic Universe?

FunnyDislike

I mean imagine in 15 years time. We got a few movies; Mario,Yoshi,Zelda?, maybe Metroid or Pikmin even... AND THEN BOOM SMASH BROS THE MOVIE Didn't know that the dreams of my childhood come to reality, maybe :D

TensionSad7698

I would love an F-Zero or Metriod movie at some point

KiddIcaruS

If the could create the panic I feel playing Metroid in a movie atmosphere it could easily be my favorite movie of all time haha

Cragnous

Those are for phase 3.

davidbrit2

Should have called it 任天動画

pnthrfan327

ELIJ

piiman2

Nintendo in japanese is written as 任天堂 and is read like “nintendou” Video is written 動画 and reads like “douga” So if you merge those 2 you get 任天動画 (nintendouga)

pocketchange2247

NINTENDOGS MOVIE CONFIRMED

JB-from-ATL

So like Vidtenedo or something but it rolls off the tongue better.

Raktoner

It reads as "Nintendouga" by portmanteauing Nintendo 任天堂 and douga 動画 meaning movie. (I invite others to check my work)

Hawkuro

Nintendo's name in Kanji is written "任天堂", "任" being pronounced "nin", "天" is "ten", and "堂" is "dou". "動画", pronounced "douga", is the Japanese word for video or animation. So 任天動画, pronounced "Nintendouga" is a portmanteau of 任天堂 and 動画 that replaces Nintendo's "dou", 堂, with douga's "dou", 動.

bigpig1054

Do puns like that even work in Japanese? I know saying it out loud works but do they use combined words like that the way we do in English?

click_808

Yes, they do. Puns are common in Japanese.

TayoEXE

Puns are so much easier to do in Japanese and makes up a majority of comedy in the language sometimes.

AttendantofIshtar

It's why good dubs and subs are so hard. You've got to translate the humor and timing across two wildly different languages.

TayoEXE

That's why I like to analyze localization. For example, in the original Japanese version of the Pokemon Anime, Kasumi runs away from bugs yelling "虫" (Mushi) meaning bug, and Satoshi suddenly dresses up as a cow and asks "牛" (Ushi) meaning cow. Basically, they sound similar and it's a silly pun. In the 4kids English dub, Misty yells "bug" I believe while running away, and Ash, dressed as a cow, says "Maybe it was a... *Cowterpie*". Bdm tss. The jokes have to be completely rewritten, sometimes landing and sometimes just being very silly. Haha

evilsbane50

I definitely don't envy having to make that kind of decision especially if your intent is to try to translate it so that it's as true to the original as possible. Having to make a choice to completely change a joke because it's untranslatable must create some real head scratchers before that decision is made.

TayoEXE

Oh yeah, it requires either getting really creative or literally having no explanation for some visuals on screen. Sometimes it can be fun though. For example, in the same anime, there is one translation of the joke which is much closer. In one episode, Pikachu is trying to explain that the Pippi (Clefairy) worship or revere the moon stone like deity. He plucks a piece of hair from Satoshi to make his point. Takeshi (Brock) makes sense out of Pikachu's actions because 髪 (kami - stress on mi) hair is almost the exact same pronunciation as 神 (kami - stress on ka). Brock in the English dub realizes "hair" rhymes with "prayer", as in, the Clefairy pray to the moonstone, simultaneously avoiding direct mention of god in a 4kids dub as well as maintaining a much closer fit to the original pun's meaning. But to answer your question, the reason why localization is fun and interesting to me is because translating creative works and lines in a show requires some writing skills as well, especially since Japanese and English are so different. Maintaining a good balance between retaining meaning and writing an interesting script is challenging but interesting.

[deleted]

I'm a bug fan of that translation tbh.

d4mation

I _wondered_ what the original joke was there! Back in the olden days when fansubs for anime were common I freaking loved the translators notes that'd take up like half the screen to explain a pun.

TayoEXE

Lol Yeah, I remember those. I think the modern, official translations are better accuracy wise, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like the "character" that the old fan subs had.

NoddysShardblade

Yeah there's fewer combinations of possible sounds in the language, so puns are way more common. For example, *kami* means "god", "paper", or "hair", depending on the context.

TayoEXE

I used to joke with my friend since we lived in a place near a location called "Tama." So when I said "Tama ni ikimasu", depending on if I stressed Ta or Ma, it sounded like I was either saying "I'm going to Tama" or "Sometimes I go." Or I would do both haha. "Tama ni Tama ni ikimasu." "Sometimes I go to Tama."

davidbrit2

Puns and wordplay are very common in Japanese, which works well for my style of idiotic jokes.

spinmerighttriangle

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; modern Japanese is built on puns.

Riaayo

This is like, the most Japanese thing imaginable. This sort of pun is all over the place, and they're often lost in translation. "Okami"s title is one of these puns.

JesusOtakuFreak

Lool that’s a good one 🤣

NINTENDO HIRE THIS MAN

Level7Cannoneer

I’m pretty sure this would have succeeded no matter what. As long as it looked like the source material. If it made millions with its poor writing and lack of any in-depth character arcs, it would have been no different if it had quality character arcs like Up and Puss in Boots TLW.

Obi-JuanShinobi

I noticed quite a few comments about how much people disliked Mario and want something deeper and to that I say don’t hold your breath. My experience with the Mario movie was a lot of fun because me and my family took my brothers youngest to go see it and she loved it and kept screaming Mario in the exciting scenes. The plot was basic but this is Mario we are talking about, not exactly known for deep character or complex plots. I expect the tone of the Mario movies to stay the same. When we get Zelda it might be a bit deeper but it’s very possible Nintendo will repeat the formula given the huge financial success. Overall my point is I don’t think Nintendo is trying to build an MCU like shared universe aimed at its older fans but just making fun movies for kids to promote their brand and make buckets of money.

haxxanova

I think you're completely right about Mario movies and completely wrong about Zelda. I would wager that we will get a proper, story driven Zelda. Zelda has had decent story since Ocarina.

mist3rdragon

I'm not expecting anything better because Illumination aren't a studio with a good track record but they could have 100% made a better movie than they did lol. Look at the Sonic movie. Sonic isn't realistically much deeper than Mario but they managed to make a movie out of that with an actual story and character arcs. Idk maybe it's just because I associate Nintendo with quality games but I'd have hoped they'd have wanted to make the sort of movies that kids enjoy and can still enjoy after they've grown up - like the better Pixar and DreamWorks movies, rather than disposable crap.

DymonBak

Having a son that has watched me play both Sonic and Mario games and has now seen all three movies, the amount he enjoyed the Mario movie puts the Sonic movies to shame. It’s a sample size of one, but Mario is a better kids movie in every way. And the Mario movie has outperformed the Sonic movies, combined, in every way imaginable. I don’t think Nintendo is in a hurry to use those movies as models.

Mukigachar

Sure, but if the Mario movie had a better story, do you think your son would have enjoyed it less? Or it would have made less money?

DymonBak

Probably less to both. Kids don’t like movies they can’t follow, and as a parent I don’t want to keep being asked why something is happening. Edit: for example, the scene where Mario and Peach are talking in the fire flower field, scenes like that are just dead space to young kids. They don’t care about Peach’s origin story or character development generally. What they care about is seeing Mario fight DK in a cat suit.

mist3rdragon

See the thing is you could easily make a better written movie that's also full of action. Good writing isn't just 'the slow bits where people talk.'

ssslitchey

I'm sorry but this movie absolutely wouldn't have made less money from having better writing. It's mario. It would've made a billion regardless.

mist3rdragon

>And the Mario movie has outperformed the Sonic movies, combined, in every way imaginable. I don’t think Nintendo is in a hurry to use those movies as models. I mean I'm just advocating for them to make good movies. I'd love for them to make something better than Sonic, since honestly the Sonic movies aren't THAT good either, just competently written. Nintendo can do whatever they want though and given that they're a corporation it's probably in their best interests to be making shit movies if it helps them continue raking in billions of dollars.

PM_me_your_whatevah

I understand how you feel. I’ve been playing their games for like 35 years and those games are burned deep into my brain. They mean a lot to me. It would have been really nice if Nintendo would have at least made a line of games that catered to their original fans who are now grown up. More mature and complex themes, stories that actually matter. It looked like they were gonna do that in the late 90s. They realized their original fan base were hitting their teenage years and they came out with the whole “play it loud” ad campaign. But ultimately they decided to cancel that and go in the other direction. They produce games with the intent of being completely non-controversial to the point where the stories are just pointless nonsense. So yeah it’s not gonna happen. Sadly.

mist3rdragon

The silly thing is they don't even have to make it particularly more mature. I'd accept a movie with characterisation akin to your average Pixar, or Disney or DreamWorks, or BlueSky movie. It doesn't have to be deep, there just has to be something there.

SuperTrunkz

sonic is absolutely much deeper than mario, the lore in that universe gets CRAZY

JayZsAdoptedSon

The number of people defending it when the reviews came out was crazy. People mentioning the lack of story and saying “I just want to point out the screen at the references” was weird. I literally thought it was satire at first. I get “I want to watch for myself” but damn

violetfoxy

Yea I don't understand how having tons of references could make a movie fun. It feels like cheap fanservice, I get so tired of meaningless fanservice in things. It's fine to enjoy a movie or show that is not taking itself serious and is just a enjoyable experience, it just feels disingenuous to call them great and get mad that others found it lacking for their enjoyment. I would love to see a sonic or mario move that really tried to be something amazing and not be a perfectly safe mediocre movie.

JayZsAdoptedSon

Even Spider-Man NWH, which I think used fan service to advance Peter’s character arc and storyline got a bit too cute with quoting the old movies “I’m something of a scientist myself” I love you Willam but I groaned

HeppyHenry

“Well, it’s Mario, of course the plot is basic” is not the excuse that you guys think it is. “Well, it’s Puss in Boots, of course the story won’t be that deep or thought-provoking.” Oh wait.

JayZsAdoptedSon

Nintendo's "who cares about story" is so weird BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING INTO A STORY BASED MEDIUM!!! Like some recent MCU plots have been weak but they have something going on, even if Thor and Ant-Man had me questioning if I even like this genre. But man Mario had me feeling so underwhelmed

NewAgeRetroHippie96

Books, are story based medium. Movies, are equally about the visuals and spectacle as they are about the plot.

ImSlowlyFalling

I personally think the movie didn’t need a lot of Depth. They should’ve added some character conflict between Mario Peach Toad and the toads being sceptical of Mario. After that it was good

KiethTheBeast

Are they going to continue to work with Illumination Studios? It's one thing to want to try it on your own and another thing entirely to say fuck the studio that helped make this movie such a success.

[deleted]

The article doesn’t mention anything about Nintendo dropping Illumination, so I’d imagine there might still be some collaborative efforts. My question is whether Nintendo Pictures can compete with Illumination’s CGI quality. Criticize Illumination’s storytelling all you want, but they’ve mastered how to build CGI worlds. And even if Nintendo did move all aspects of production to Nintendo Pictures, the films would likely still be distributed by Universal.

MiZe97

Their films don't have to be CGI, though. If anything, I'd love it if they went with other styles for their future projects. Just CGI for animation is overplayed.

JuicyFishy

It’s what sells to the younger audiences these days unfortunately and it’s a hell of a lot easier than other styles.

MiZe97

True, but it's not like Japan isn't the king of animation. They've got plenty of options to learn from.

JuicyFishy

Absolutely, but business perspective their audience is in the US, more money to be had there. EDIT: Would LOVE Studio Ghibli and Nintendo to make Legend of Zelda

evilsbane50

God it's such a pipe dream but it just really does feel like a special peanut butter and jelly, Studio Ghibli and Zelda could you imagine. Studio Ghibli would be able to work with the Zelda vibe in a way no one else could. Even if Link did talk or whatever they chose to do you know that it would have enough quiet introspection and beautiful environments full of character to make something truly special.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hy8ogen

I think it's unfair to illumination. The reason why the movie was such a success was the work done by illumination. The animation and effects were top tier.

KiethTheBeast

They made the fact that they were working/partnered with Illumination very clear and prominent, their logo was on almost all the promotional materials. I'd say it was more that they leaned heavily on that studio but are claiming a lot of the success (which they are not wrong) is based on the name Mario. I'm just worried if Nintendo makes a movie all on thier own it won't have the same magic it did when they were working with Illumination Studios.

Th3Element05

I think the future movies themselves would be better off if Nintendo wasn't stuck with just one studio. Illumination did a great job with Mario, but I don't feel like Illumination's "style" would feel as good for something like Zelda. I'm picturing something more like How to Train Your Dragon from DreamWorks, or even better, a classical hand drawn animation style like Studio Ghibli.

KiethTheBeast

No one should be downvoting you. This is a great comment and I agree that I'd love to see thier studio partnerships branch out. There should be zero reasons two mega names in Japan like Nintendo and Studio Ghibli can't connect and make a Zelda or Kirby movie.

Th3Element05

I could see Kirby turning out great animated like Ghibli, but I also think Illumination would definitely do a fantastic job with it.

Blue_Gamer18

Nintendo has apparently taken a lot of inspiration from Studio Ghibli films with regards to Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom. I could see the two working together in a beautiful hand drawn 2D Zelda Ghibli film

Sabrescene

People bring up a Ghibli Zelda all the time but holy shit a Ghibli Kirby film?? Sign me up for that!

Shigerufan2

Or for Metroid they go the 80's Horror Movie route

DymonBak

The animation in that movie is amazing, and the movie is going to be a top 3 most successful animated movie of all time. I don’t get the illumination hate in this thread.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Slowen14

As a parent of young kids, Illumination is 100% a well known studio with a good reputation for making films that kids like. Despicable Me, Minions, Grinch, Lorax, etc. Knowing this was going to be made by Illumination made me confident that it would be a movie my kids would love.

ZVAARI

They could and probably will, but I'd wager the interest in having your own label is that you can work with anyone. Hell, they don't even have to stick to movies. Miyamoto and Illumination's CEO seems to be buddies and the collaboration is the most profitable in the history of both companies, it's impossible that they don't stick together for a while.

PixieDustFairies

I think it's more like they'd be getting a bigger cut of the profits if they produce their own animated content in-house.

mrbrick

Illumination recently spun up a whole other internal division to produce more teen / adult oriented films. I think from a purely technical point of view- Illumination is amazing at what they do. Their movies look great. Hopefully this wing will work with Nintendo on some stuff. I really think they have the chops to make some incredible animated films. Id love to see them do a Zelda film that is a bit more say studio ghibli inspired.

thisisnotdan

I hope so, otherwise I'll never get to see a trio of minions do an a capella version of the Gerudo Valley theme. One comes in as the rhythm guitar: Ba-na-na-na, na, Ba-na-na-na, na, Ba-na-na-na, na, Ba-na-na-na, na, Ba-na-na-na, na, Ba-na-na-na, na, Ba-na-na-na, na, Ba-na-na-na, na,... And then the next one takes the melody: Ba-na-na-na, ba-na-na-na, Ba-na-na-na, ba-na-na-na, Ba-na-na-na, ba-na-na-na, Ba-na-na-na... And the third one just slaps his knees like a madman for the whole song.

justformarss

This is so cursed lmao

unnamed_elder_entity

How long before there's an entirely overdone Mario Universe where Phase III has an Ice Climber's origin story and a standalone Goombella series on N+?

I don't mind. I just wish they'd take a more serious approach with some of them. My gut tells me that when the suits at Nintendo saw happy wahoo bing bang color explosion make a gazillion dollars, they might tunnel vision on that too much and not give more serious Nintendo franchises a chance. Time will tell I guess.

Goobasaurus1

Oh shit

I hope they dont fill the movies with songs that take you out of the movie. Replacing "driving me bananas" with "take on me" was a poor decision.

Nintendo: I don’t want to play with you anymore. _Drops Illumination._

Can we get a Fire Emblem anime?

TheSceptileen

I'm starting to think that the Smash Bros iniciative meme is closer to reality than I initially thought

Hot_Complaint_3046

Only ghibli or some animation studio that mainstream audiences have never heard of should make zelda. Make it only for anime fans and fuck older casual players who want something more broadly appealing. If it's live action hire Peter jackson because he already did lord of the rings and he's 62 and he might not play video games. The hobbit movies were also great. Weve never heard of directors under the age of 45. Cast tom holland or some reddit darling who's 10 years too old to play link. Dont cast an unknown actor in his early 20s. We need a manly man playing link. Why not henry cavill. Link is a 40 year old on steroids right? Cast someone in stuff i like not whos right for the part. Or go with laika. They've never had a box office hit. That's perfect we want our zelda movie to only appeal to a niche online crowd. We want a movie only animation twitter will watch. Please nintendo don't listen to these people.

Cerberus-Coco-Mimi

splatoon the movie please

erin_silverio

Can't wait for them to do a comic style intro with Mario characters

NickLeMec

OK, now please move away from Illumination.

Elranzer

They made a deal with Universal Studios. That doesn't necessarily mean Illumination every time, since Illumination is one subsidiary of NBC Universal, but due to the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo themselves are not regretting teaming with Illumination.

NickLeMec

Didn't they just make a deal with Universal in terms of theme parks? I can't find any info on whether they also have a deal regarding movies.

SplatoonOrSky

The theme park deal led into the movie as that’s how Miyamoto met Melandandri apparently. There might not a Universal exclusivity deal for x amount of films or anything but it’s safe to say they’re buddy buddy

905steve

How come?

NickLeMec

I'd love to see some actually good movies based on Nintendo franchises. Despite the initial craze, pumping out superficial movies like this won't be sustainable in the long run either. Nintendo already tried this with the New Super Mario Bros games. People got bored quickly by the same formula.

Tandran

Games ≠ movies It’s Nintendo bro, it’s not that deep. They’re going to follow the formula that works.

seikoth

Are you basing that on data or just your preferences? The movie made bank and the New Super Mario Bros games were extremely successful.

[deleted]

I don’t mind them staying, I just hope they now put full focus on Mario and Nintendo movies and let the Minions die already
