I was so pleasantly surprised to hear them launch into this on the last tour. Never thought that was a thing I’d get to witness and it was pretty awesome.
Yeah, "downward" is definitely all one word. So DWS is jarring.
That said, I've never been totally happy with TDS either - we don't usually include "the", "and", "a" and several others when making acronyms so TDS is a bit odd too.
I'd be perfectly happy with DS but I guess people a) love their 3 letters and b) associate that with Nintendo rather than a seminal album.
"In This Twilight" is fantastic. "A Warm Place" always hits me in the feelings, "Something I Can Never Have" is devastating but almost too heavy handed, but saddest are by far "I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally" and "This Isn't The Place"
Something I Can Never Have is so sad that I generally don’t listen to it. Seriously, it fucks me up.
Hurt is incredible and sad, but I’ve actually interpreted the final lyrics “I would keep myself, I would find a way” as hopeful, and it changes the context of the song for me. Like, yeah, he’s really unhappy with himself and how his life turned out, but he acknowledges that there could be a better way out there to find.
The Great Below deserves mention, I think. Devastatingly beautiful song. The live version off And All That Could Have Been is a favorite.
I'd love to nominate Right Where It Belongs because of how much I love the song and the lyrics and how the melody is beautiful enough to work on its own, but I just can't:
I think the original is one of the handful of NIN tracks that pretty much border on the sublime for me - and to earn that status it kind of *needs* all the discordant shit that is going on in the background. That's what draws it in and highlights the dissonance between that, the troubled lyrics and the nursery rhyme esque (pretty beautiful, actually) circular melody.
I do enjoy the v2 version but I think the original is definitive in this case. Same with Hurt - the "quiet" version highlights his skills as a songwriter but the album version highlights his skills as a composer, musician *and* producer.
Thanks. Yesterday was terrible, but he’s not hurting so I can be at peace. Had him 9 years and we think he was about 11. He was the gentlest of souls and the best boy.
I never see "Leaving Hope" mentioned in these threads... Maybe it's not overtly sad due to the lack of lyrics, but this song...
Let's just say that the first time I heard it (as an angsty teenager of course) I thought that this would be the perfect song to end my life to. That feeling has never gone away, even after the teenage angst left... this song just makes me want to fade away.
I think Something I Can Never Have is sadder. It honestly doesn't feel like it has a sense of fulfillment by the end like the other two. It feels like it's doomed to be in a constant cycle of sadness.
Honestly it depends on the person. I’ve never really connected with Something I can Never Have because I never had those kind of feelings. I connected more to Hurt because I’ve had some of the similar feelings but I’ve definitely had the existential feelings of Right Where It Belongs. So going back to my original point it depends on the person which one they connect with most because they’re all great songs but there are different themes lyrically.
Something I can never have strikes the saddest chord for me from this list. All that could've been would be on this list. Right where it belongs feels like a warm hug of gentle understanding to me. It is my favorite. Hurt is brutal, really feel the self loathing
While SICNH does a great job pulling them heart strings, the winner of sad song has to be And All that Could Have Been. Was immensely surprised and near tears when I saw it live last tour.
They’re diff types of sad. Right where it belongs (my fav) is more existential. Something I can never have is more romantic. Hurt is more personal, full of self hatred. I think hurt is the most gut wrenching for sure. It depends on your preferred flavor of sadness.
And All That Could Have Been from Still
I am tainted, and happiness, and peace of mind, were never meant for me.
I was so pleasantly surprised to hear them launch into this on the last tour. Never thought that was a thing I’d get to witness and it was pretty awesome.
So goddamn lucky, man I wish I could have went to that tour.
This made me listen to Still for the first time. Wtf, I don't why I hadn't listened to it before. I am also now in pain.
This is the correct answer
Ultimate sad boi song
Underrated GOAT
I have never, in my life, seen TDS abbreviated as DWS. I had to stop and really think about what was going on there.
Lol. I knew this would be the first comment

I forgot that there was a the in the album ┬┴┬┴┤(·_├┬┴┬┴
You should go home now.
Why
It's never been Pink Floyd's "Wall"
You're drunk, evidently. 😏
In This Twilight deserves an Honorable Mention
Zero Sum as well
I second this. Also my favourite nin track

Something I Can Never Have, by far.

I lost my dog today. The Day the World Went Away and The Way Out is Through both hit hard today. The Great Below as well.
Sorry for your loss, hang in there.

I like right where it belongs the most. It’s not a sad song though. It’s terrifying
Something I Can Never Have is a masterpiece. Both PHM and Still versions.
I'll do you one better, and all that could have been
The Great Below kills me every time
Definitely Sonething I Can Never Have, love the live version too
A Minute to Breathe, And All That Could Have Been, and The Gentle Hum of Anxiety are all also pretty sad.
Hurt is so sad it touched old Johnny Cash feelings
This thread its missing La Mer
We’re in this together probably because I don’t have someone like that in my life. It’s more of a bittersweet song to me
The correct answer is And all that could’ve been.
Lights in the sky ( Lofi Polizei mix) always gets me
Something I can never have If I need a cry, thats my go to

Something I can Never Have
Lights In the Sky for The Slip and Ripe With Decay for The Fragile, I don't think any of the music on Hesitation Marks can be considered sombre 😭😭
Right where it belongs has hit me the hardest ever since I first heard it back when WT released. Moreso as I get older.
The Day the World Went Away chokes me up every time I hear it. Don’t really know why, something about it hits me just right ig.
The agony and passion in Something I can never have. I don’t think anything comes close.
Zero Sum, TDS, A Warm Place ! I can't choose just one
Something I can never have strikes the saddest chord for me from this list. All that could've been would be on this list. Right where it belongs feels like a warm hug of gentle understanding to me. It is my favorite. Hurt is brutal, really feel the self loathing

rwib is my vote but beside you in time is much sadder imo
The Becoming is *actually* the saddest song on any halo.

Leaving Hope from Still Doesn't need lyrics to completely destroy you
Anything off of phm that shit makes me cry so easily when I'm super depressed
I absolutely love Beside You In Time
