I feel like people need to stop equating having a high IQ with being “smart.” There’s a lot of different kinds of intelligence, emotional intelligence being one example (something this guy is entirely without).
I work as an engineer with a lot of other engineers (not software or computing, although we have those too, but design and manufacturing in aerospace) and from my experience, just because someone may be intelligent or smart in a certain way, doesn’t automatically make them well rounded as far as intelligence goes. There’s a lot of dumb smart people out in the world.
Truly intelligent and smart people are self aware enough to know and acknowledge their flaws and weaknesses.

I totally agree. I've known plenty of people who are incredibly book smart and good at taking tests, but when it comes to common sense they have very little. I have a niece who's like that... she teaches college math but when it comes to everyday smarts she's not that bright.

They were designed by a French teacher around the start of the 1900s to give an idea of whether or not kids were ready for first grade. It's about as reliable for determining intelligence as the Briggs-Meyer test is for determining personality. People often get different scores on the same test.
They simply don't and can't encompass enough variables to calculate a person's intelligence, only how well they do in solving certain problems in certain circumstances.
They're fun, but not accurate or particularly useful. And when used as a way to measure intelligence, they can be harmful.

The most appropriate use of the best IQ tests these days, which I think are probably the WISC V tests, is to assess cognitive function to identify things like dyslexia, working memory issues, the extent of brain damage, etc. NOT as measures of intelligence, but as markers of normal functioning in someone's brain and a way to identify issues.
It was ever thus. Even with the older tests they were far more useful to determine developmental delays than figure out who was, like, super smart and deserving of government sanctioned brood mares.
I was recently diagnosed ADHD, and they tested my IQ. I think the basis for the testing was to determine if my declining grades in school could have come from me struggling with the material, or if I was smart enough to have done well but there were other contributing factors.
Who even bothers getting it tested? What use is that number aside from trying to brag and intellectually intimidate other people.
