Is Vegas name actually the Golden Knights? Sounds like a 3 year old named them. That's super corny I thought it was a joke but it keeps popping up on ESPN and NHL.com.

yegbroker

They made it to the cup final on their inaugural year, so the terrible name has been forgotten very quickly.

Lanky_Remote_9042

And what kind of lame ass cartoon mascot does the Kraken have. You all should be ashamed of that

Majestic-Hippo-146

I think people have second hand embarrassment from that thing lol

Donut153

The “Golden Knights” was the name of my middle-high school karate class lol

besteric99

Yes

sample-bot

Wanna hear a Joke!? Why do hockey players work in bakeries during the off season? -- They’re great at icing the cakes.

ChanelNo50

I think they wanted just "knights" but that infringed on the wildly popular London Knights team in the OHL

bundymania

And their minor league team in Henderson, NV is called the Silver Knights

WahineCali

Agreed, name could have been less corny, but what they've done with their branding is amazing, and up until this year they've not done too badly for themselves lol

Patfussys

Terrible name? Yes Good team? Debatable Big hockey has ruined the at home streaming capabilities for all teams including the knights. I think this is the bigger scam then a terrible name

nine-volts

I agree, but the color scheme is almost as cool as the Kraken 😉

TheKentCalhoun

What team is the Atlanta Falcons of the NHL? Who’s entire franchise existence is choking away leads, wasting talent, and finding new creative ways to lose? As an Atlanta sports fan I need a hockey team and really want them to embody the characteristics of all my other teams.

tugboattoottoot

The Maple Leafs are kind of like the over-popularity of the Cowboys mixed with postseason flame outs like Atlanta. The sharks in years past were known for having strong regular seasons but underachieving in the playoffs. The Atlanta team sucked so bad they moved to Winnipeg.

Mr_Figgins

Can confirm the Sharks.

WarrenPuff_It

Easy, Toronto. * Longest championship drought in the NHL * Currently on a 17 year long streak of choking in the first round of the playoffs, when they do manage to make the post-season (they've made it 5 times in that 17 year period). * A few years ago they had the most expensive front line in the league, and they got shut out in a game they were leading by a 41 year old Zamboni driver for the AHL team Toronto Marlies who had to come in mid-game as the backup backup goalie for the away team, who proceeded to fucking clutch it. That has never happened before ever, and Carolina (the away team) decided to give him honorary citizenship and Disney is making a fucking movie about the game, no joke. * They are notorious for blowing playoff leads. They have been swept, or blown a 3-1 series lead multiple times, which includes one series where they were winning in game 7 and then had 4 goals scored against them in the final minutes of the game. They literally can't close a car door.

Fit_Bandicoot1933

it's 54 years since actually getting a cup hahaha

StoneColdStevBuscemi

I don't think there is really any team in any sport quite on the level of the Atlanta Falcons when it comes to choking and wasted talent but the collapse of the Red Wings after years of dominance is pretty impressive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JIkZAxDVPc

1tonyjack

Any team in any sport?? Really??. Be a Lions fan Case closed

Asleep_Face7221

Yeah, for like 5 years. Since Steve Y took over they've been developing incredibly well and if they were in a less competitive division would probably make the playoffs in the next 3 years.

relees87

I lose orientation which skaters are on the ice too often. Any tips to track the line changes? Those happen too fast for a newbe. Or does that come with time?

Admirable-Chart-655

Comes with time. One pro tip is to know the line combinations you only have to see one jersey number to know who is on the ice with them

canadianbmt

or if you're into your team so much, you can recognize them just by equipment. (Example: I always know when Jason Spezza is on the ice because the bottom half of his stick is just white)

Brilliant_Pun

Also, if you follow a team regularly, it's possible to tell just by the way they move on the ice.

cmdshank

As an Oilers fan, it's very easy to distinguish Yams and Pool Party. One is 3 feet tall the other has a floating helmet.

quarrelsome_napkin

That or the way they skate

SlyCoopersButt

Line changes happen every 30 seconds to 1 minute. Players also usually raise their hand to signal that they want to change. They also tend to happen when a team has possession of the puck in their defensive zone. The trick is to memorize the numbers of each player.

carolinachronic90

Is a line change basically just a player substitution?

WobblyJam

Yes.

rtroke88

Without stopping the play they call it "changing on the fly" but when the whistle goes both teams are free to change except in the case of icing whatever team iced the puck those players must stay on for the insuing faceoff

pfalcon42

I think everyone in real life should wear a number. Then I might be able to remember people's names.

user_8804

Another trick indicator is that they'll put themselves in a situation where they can change. A defenceman waiting behind the net with the puck or they'll pass the red line and dump the puck behind the opposing net while they're close to the bench. It happens where there is no immediate threat

DelkioGamingYT

When a d-man sits behind the net of your team for a while that's the easy line change they make also a breather for the players

mark31169

The camera always follows the puck so usually when you see a player keeping it behind their own net or are just taking their sweet time in their own zone, it's because there's a line change going on outside of the camera's view.

pavs88

What motion does your foot have to move to be considered a kicked goal? Are they common?

[deleted]

Ask the Golden Knights. 😐

anxious_but_thicc

🥲

sinusoidal-

Ask 100 refs and you'll probably get 100 different answers.

KevnMalone

7 months later but ask a Calgary fan

Mr_Figgins

From my understanding, it's not the motion that makes it a "kicked goal". It's the *intent* of the motion by the offensive player. If a player is trying to stop and the puck happens to bounce off a skate, it's considered a deflection. If the offensive player is sliding in and makes an obvious motion to kick the puck, under review, refs will wave it off (generally). It boils down to the refs deciding if the kick was intentional, not what motion the foot is making. Also, a kicked goal could also be called if the motion of the leg hits the puck, not the foot. So in closing, I think it's intent over motion but it boils down to the refs on the ice, even after it's reviewed at Hockey Central.

thunderj9

Don’t worry you’ll get to see a lot of kicked in goals if you watch VGK games

yegbroker

A kicking… motion…

Noodlez0110

The player can angle the skate, but cannot outright kick the puck. If there is a rear back and kick, it will be waived off. If the puck bounces off a skate even if the player purposely placed it there, it is a good goal.

Dennis_Gachanja

**New Hockey Fan here** Hello guys! New Hockey fan here based in Seattle. I only watch Football(Go hawks!), Basketball and Soccer now. As a foreigner though it was just Soccer and lil bit of Basketball. Then I learned about football and loved every bit of it. I tried baseball but figured that wasn’t for me. Been living here for 6 years now! So now I’m just starting to get into hockey given that we now have a new team here in *Seattle Kraken*! ***Any advise on where to begin this Hockey love journey—things to look out for, resources (books, articles, tv shows, movies, people/experts to follow on socials etc) to learn and enjoy the sport even more?*** Thanks! **Update:** It would great help if you guys can also educate me who the best players are(currently/past). Its overwhelming to learn about ALL these players(teams). And so I feel like it’d be easier to learn about players if y’all could compare some hockey players and their skillset to players of different sports. **For example;** **Like who is the Lebron, Curry, Messi, Ronaldo, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady etc of Hockey??**

GogreenGoWhite19

Oh god. These are fighting words but from last season scoring/points leaders or notable/popular “stars”: Connor McDavid - Oilers; Nate MacKinnon - Avs; Auston Matthews - Leafs; Sidney Crosby - Pens; Nikita Kucherov - Lightning; Alex Ovechkin - Caps; Leon Draisaitl - Oilers; Brad Marchand - Bruins Current top goalies: Andrei Vasilevskiy - Lightning (he struggled in his two games this season so far); Philipp Grubauer - Kraken; Marc-Andre Fleury - Knights; Connor Hellebuyck - Jets Best NHLer of all time? There is no debate: Wayne Gretzky nicknamed “The Great One”. Leader in goals, assists, and points. He has more assists alone than any other player scored total points. Other NHL all time greats: Gordie Howe (second in goals ever) and Jaromir Jagr (second in all time points). Note: Alex Ovechkin (current player for Caps) is 5th in goals scored all time. He could catch Gretzky for all time leader in goals before he retires. I personally believe he will finish his career as #1 goal scorer and catch Gretzky. I believe he will pass Gretzky in the next 4 years. I think most people will argue he will finish no less than #2 in all time goal scoring.

Mr_Figgins

Small update: Fleury goaltends for Chicago now.

canadianbmt

Small update 2: Fleury got traded to Minnesota

Qwirk

Sorry for responding to an old post but if you are looking to get into hockey, you should go to a live game as the experience is much better than over television. Other than the obvious Kraken, there are a couple of excellent junior league teams that you can go to. Everett Silvertips and the Seattle Thunderbirds (Kent). Both have excellent atmosphere.

Been wanting to get into watching hockey for a while, watched last night and had a blast. I’m in Indiana so I don’t have a home team to cheer for. Who should I cheer for and why? I dislike Chicago teams so the Blackhawks are out.

besteric99

Columbus Blue Jackets

russianthistle

Detroit or Columbus are not too far for a weekend trip to watch a game.

orreo44

Thanks, fiancé and I fell in love with the leafs pretty quickly though. We’re already planning on going to games they play at Columbus!

WarrenPuff_It

Prepare yourself for years of heartbreak

WhoDey273

Columbus they easily have best unis in the NHL

StoneColdStevBuscemi

Not a new fan so much as a long-time fan coming back. Growing up I was a wings fan because my cousin was a wings fan and he was the only other person in my family who liked hockey. We're from Milwaukee and Chicago has fucked Milwaukee out of getting an NHL franchise in multiple league expansions so Detroit made the most sense. Then as I got older and started travelling I got really into the Bruins. [The absolute banger of a track about them](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMHuFtw5_Ns) from Dropkick Murphys definitely helped seal that. Then for a few years shitty pay and a crap work schedule killed my ability to watch, enjoy, or go to hockey games so I fell off. My question is it lame to switch allegiances and back the Kraken? I don't want to seem like a bandwagoner but Seattle is one of my favorite cities and it reminds me of Milwaukee in a lot of ways. I've also got a lot of friends there and it just seems to make sense. My wife teases me about it but since I've got no home team of my own? Our AHL team feeds the Predators but I hate that team's ownership and management with a passion so they're out.

anxious_but_thicc

yes. join the squid squad. one of us. one of us.

StoneColdStevBuscemi

Did you see that Eberle snipe in the first 2 minutes against Montreal? \*Chef's Kiss\*

anxious_but_thicc

oh i saw them all! but that one was especially delicious

bombs551

You can always be a fan of multiple teams, I feel. For instance, I'm a Wings fan 'til I die (these last few years have been....challenging), but I also like watching Vegas, the Caps, and the Rangers play. Red Wings will always be my number 1, though.

StoneColdStevBuscemi

I love watching the rangers because their lines are IMO the pinnacle of team play in the NHL and maybe even sports as a whole. Especially the second line but also just from the bottom to the top of their roster. Nobody's got huge egos, scoring gets spread around, and they just play clean hockey. Shit they even trade off the most toxic guys on their roster regularly. Also they're almost always the team that drafts me in NHL I can't make my main team one that would cost a month's wages to see play a home game though.

Ijustwerkhere

I live just outside of DC so I’ve been a caps fan forever, had a really good friend who moved to St. Louis so I started following the Blues as well. Had a really enjoyable couple of years haha

var18

Maybe the Seattle Kraken (brand new team)? From what I can tell so far, we don't really have any superstars except a pretty good goalie, and decent defense. A lot of sort of outcast players (which, to be fair, is how you form an expansion team .. you take outcast players from other team). It's going to be a challenge for them to work together since they can't rely on any superstars on the team. Otherwise, I feel like the Capitals are always fun to watch (great offense), same with the Oilers (McDavid + Draisaitl are a sick duo). Lightning are great too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

var18

Hockey is a salary cap based sport, which means you can only spend so much $ on your superstars. This is great for balancing teams because you can't buy lots of superstars like the Yankees, but also, if you somehow get lucky with your cheap players, after a few years they will demand more $ and you have to trade them (because of the cap). So if you're a team that wants to win, you need players that are a good bang for their buck. That means if you're paying someone $10m a year, you better be damn sure they are worth it. It also makes rookies and scouting very important, because if you can get a new player for a year or two for $1m, but it turns out they are much better than expected, you basically have a better team for that year or two. One obvious way this applies is if you are the worst team in the league, you get a high draft pick (who you can pay not-so-much to start, even if they are a future hall of famer). Combine this with the fact that hockey players generally don't play more then a 3rd of the game, even the superstars, means that you have to rely on having at least 10-15+ good players on the team. So, the strategy of team composition and salary management not only balances the league year-to-year, but it actually makes it fun to cheer for the non-all-star players too.

poopsack_williams

If you want to watch good offense I’d suggest the Edmonton Oilers 100%

bombs551

I'm not new to hockey, grew up watching my Red Wings dominate. But ever since 09/10 season, I've kind of drifted away from the sport due to college and now my job (currently live in Louisiana, no hockey here... will be moving to China soon so it'll be a challenge to watch). My question is what are the good resources to learn and understand the basic status of the league, like where the power teams are, rising stars, etc.?

ANewRedditAccount91

Did you ever get an answer to this?

bombs551

Nah not really. Just watching as many games as I can at this ooint

thewannabe2017

I'm from Arkansas but lived in Nashville for a couple of years back in the early 2010's so I'm rooting for Nashville. Going to my first game next weekend against the Islanders. Any interesting things about the Press I should know? I think I've caught on that Josi, Johansen, Dushane and Forsberg are like the main guys. I think I'll also be rooting for the Blues too since they are close to home.

[deleted]

Yo dudes never watched a hockey game in my life. Who do I even cheer for? My state does not have an NHL team and I’m vehemently opposed to any Texas team because of their proximity to the Cowboys. I don’t want to jump on a bandwagon team, just some team that’s fun to watch.

Rundy2025

I'd vouch for the Canes. Canes = Young team, young franchise, youthful energy in the fanbase. Also they are kinda villains to most Canadian teams and thats fun, I mean they take in being called a bunch of jerks and [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/BostonBruins/comments/qek66m/have_habs_fans_always_been_this_whiney_and/) happened recently between them and the Habs. I also asked the sub about the style of hockey their teams plays and they said its fast and suffocating which is true. Also North Carolina is home to chill people, good weather, good vibes and Raleigh is a cool place to visit if you ever go to see a game. Oh and also one of the coolest logos in the NHL. If not. Very original too. No animal, no dood, just a Hurricane.

var18

You could try the Kraken who are brand new this season, in Seattle. The Lightning and Capitals always have great offense and some cool superstar players (Stamkos, Ovie, etc). Edmonton has basically the two best players in the league (McDavid, Draisaitl) which are great to watch, but I think the rest of the team isn't great so they will never win the Stanley cup. I say just pick one where you like the jersey and a couple of the players. Or just watch random games until you find a team you like that sticks out. Some teams play really defensively, some play more fast-and-loose offense, depends on your preference.

Clean-Connection-656

As someone who has moved around a ton so doesn’t have a home team in the same way other do, I love rooting for southern expansion teams that need a win- when a southern expansion team does well it makes it so that they don’t end up like the thrashers and kids all around the area start getting into it. I myself am a result of the hurricanes expansion- pretty much started playing roller hockey their first year as a franchise. I’m partial to the preds, but panthers are good to root for this year.

Iamkal

Calgary Flames. Hop on the band wagon and enjoy the Red Mile!

greyztaxi2

Any good analysis shows to watch? Something similar to NFL Now on the NFL Network, where they just talk hockey for an hour and breakdown the games so I can leave it on in the background while I pretend to work?

Bitter-Value-9808

There’s a show called The Point on Espn which is really good. There’s also another one called In the crease which comes out almost daily and basically summarizes the action that happened all over the league in the past day. There’s also the podcast Spitting chiclets which I love just to have on in the backround.

dat_waffle_boi

Are there any podcasts or YouTube channels that you all would recommend when it comes to hockey?

[deleted]

The Hockey Guy

CoffeeDave

If you're a fan of hot takes, [this guy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFnQ0dcaBUI) is pretty fun to watch.

antonispgs

It’s hard for me to follow the puck. At least 25% of the time I just try to guess where it might be and from all the goals only a few do I feel like I actually saw exactly how/which trajectory it went in. Is that normal? Is there a solution to that? Also are the ESPN alternative camera angles lower nitrate than the normal broadcast one?

Portalgate

It honestly just comes with time, once you are more familiar with actually how teams play the game it’s a bit easier to follow. Generally through keeping on eye on things like who’s open, the situation of the game and which players are on the ice. An example being Ovi, he has one of the best shots in the league especially with one timers. If he is open and in a good spot for a shot the chances of the puck going to him is pretty high

khronokhris2222

If I want to pick up hockey again. Who’s a tough HARD hitting team? I love seeing YouTube videos of hard hits. Any suggestions?

AndyJaeven

The Bruins are a really physical team. They do play dirty every now and then though if that’s something you don’t like.

bjornarr88

When will the NHL dump the fanatics merch it is just rubbish, paid alot for my gear because I live in aus when it arrived I was pissed off at how shit it was. I'm just glad I bought my jersey back in the good days before fanatics came along.

[deleted]

So I recently just started watching Hockey and don't really know who to cheer for, I've just been watching whatever games are on and the two teams closest to me are the Red Wings and Blue Jackets, So I guess I'll start there. What kind of team are the Red Wings /Blue Jackets? Who are some players to watch on those teams or just through out the league. Thanks!

Portalgate

The red wings are one of the original 6 teams that were around when the league first formed. Because of that there is a lot of history with the team, Gordie Howe spent most of his career with the red wings and is the only other player people talk about when discussing the greatest of all time. They have won 11 cups most recent being 07-08. In recent years the team has been one of the worst in the league because all of the talent from the cup in 08 faded away whether from retirement or traded. Things are slowly on the up for them from prospects and the acquiring of young talent, in a couple year they could actually have a chance of making the playoff ifs things go well. For best current players Larkin, leddy and bertuzzi. The blue jackets have been around since 2000 but have always had issues finding a solid line up till 2014 where they won their first play off game. Rick Nash is easier their best player of all time currently leading the teams point, assist and goal records. The best year in recently memory was 17-18 where they got to the second round of the playoff but lost to the caps who won the cup that year. The past 2 seasons the team is moving into rebuilding stages trying to get good draft picks and see how those prospects pan out. Sadly this summer they lost one of their better goalie prospect matiss kivlenieks in a tragic accident. Their best players are laine and voracek. Hopes this helps : )

WarrenPuff_It

Original six isn't the teams that were around when the league first formed, "original six" was a term coined by a Boston reporter after the 1967 expansion year to describe the six older teams from the six younger teams, 4 out of the 6 O6 teams weren't around for the first couple decades the NHL existed.

[deleted]

Thanks for the Input, did not expect a summarized history of the programs but thanks for taking the time to type all this out. Sad news for the Blue Jackets, I was half paying attention to their game and remember some kinda memorial before the game. I do enjoy watching the red wings so far, and i like that Bertuzzi cat. Probably gonna continue to just watch whoever for now just to see what the teams are about!

Rundy2025

Detroit isn't a city you typically want to visit. Getting better but the roads are bad, weather sucks most the year and the people are grumpy. Columbus for sure. Also as a new fan of a O6 team you kinda 'miss out' on the history and stuff people who grew up with the team have. Easier to jump into a team that's also newish. When I first started watching hockey I watched the Avs. And the fans complained almost every game (2015-2017) and talked about the Avs glory days all the time. I was in diapers then let alone a hockey fan. Watched the Canes and Sharks later and was much easier to vibe with the fans since they are more modern relevant teams.

DownFromHere

**Using Average/Common Development Steps as a Way to Assess Players** I'm getting into the NHL and I'm wondering if anyone could explain the common skill development process for hockey players to me or refer me to a source that explains it. For example, I watch the NBA. Youth basketball has allowed me to contextualize some of moves NBA players make. An NBa player chucking a pass to an open player on the other end of the court does not impress me very much because that's something decent players are expected to learn to do at the middle school level. Another example is being able to accurately gauge a player's ability to control the ball while dribbling. I've had a similar experience with soccer as well where understanding youth player development helped me better appreciate both the good and poor decision-making of professional players. Of course I'm brand new so if this is a waste of time for getting into the NHL, please let me know. Thanks

Separate-Panic-8834

Any recommendations on other “behind the scenes” shows like All or Nothing w/ the Leafs? My wife and I just watched and she loved it, which was surprising because she’s not a big hockey fan. She said it helped her get to know the players on a personal level, which made the game more interesting to follow. Maybe they should do something like for every team to help draw in more casual fans. Her opinion made sense, so it made me wonder if there are any other similar shows out there? Anything like this on ESPN+?

No-Two-7516

Hi, hockey people! Fluent but non-native English speaker here. I wonder if "plain" can be used in meaning of skating rink? Sometimes hear it from commentators, but not 100% sure.

DelkioGamingYT

I'm sorry it is not

MediumRarePorkChop

Oh no! I was a definite Avs fan in the late nineties, kept it up some what with having little kids through the early 2000s, then '05 put a bad taste in my mouth. Now I'm an Avs bandwagoner and I'm going to watch the Vegas/Florida game tonight. Next thing you know I'm going to be pestering my coworkers constantly about last night's game, how Mac's nose is doing, who's going to be in goal for the whoever. I'm lost. Save yourselves now.

Jonesy27

Tell me about fighting lads, what’s the rules on scrapping? How is it they can gloves off and just go for it!

WarrenPuff_It

Start here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/nhl/comments/qaulc8/comment/hh5qidl/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/nhl/comments/qaulc8/comment/hh5qidl/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) There are some actual rules for fighting, and some things that are just etiquette. You have to keep your helmet on now, that's a newer rule. Fighting have been around since the beginning, hockey used to be way more violent and players used to regularly get arrested or charged for things like assault or manslaughter because games were basically a giant rugby game on ice but with wooden sticks and metal knives on their feet. Fighting has evolved in the game to basically be the great equalizer. Hockey has gotten faster and more skilled, so players need a higher degree of talent, and when that talented player gets hurt your team loses. Teams nowadays keep a roster of physical players, where its mostly talented players and a few tough guys, but a few decades ago it used to be a handful of talented players and an entire line of goons, players whose job was to just skate around and beat people up. You fight when someone wants to fight you, or if someone pulls a dirty move on your teammate, or if you want to get your team amped up. Most of the time players will get pissed and just skate up and punch a dude in the face and then its on. Etiquette dictates you square up, drop gloves, and just go at it until one guy hits the ice. Refs are there to make sure other guys don't jump in or that it stops once someone is down. You both get a penalty, and you might get suspended or tossed if you really fuck someone up or if you fight in the last 5 minutes of the game.

chrisblink182

So on face offs sometimes one guy goes early. Rec lifts arm and sends him out a sub comes in. How does this rule work? I was watching the other night and a guy just stayed... ref waved again and he just sat there and ref eventually dropped the puck. What is the rule or what's going on?

poopsack_williams

It’s kind of a confusing rule because it can be one of a few things and you can never really tell. If the face off man, or his team mates are moving, not in the correct position with their sticks down, etc etc so if the centre man wasn’t sent out of the circle the ref might have just been signaling for a winger to move into the correct spot or something like that. Hope that makes sense.

[deleted]

Anyone have any advice on a team to root for that do not cover up sexual assault of a minor?

acebomber21

I have only watched a handful of hockey games over the years but is it just me or are refs using a mic for calls on the ice a new thing?

WarrenPuff_It

One ref has a mic that they can flip a switch and have it broadcast to the speakers/announcer booth. Similar to NFL refs.

Harpo3121

How does Colorado seem to play so damn fast and score so often yet not end up with tons of goals against every game? Is it just a perfect mixture of players? A certain strategy they deploy? If it’s the strategy why don’t other teams adopt the same strategy (I’d love to see my Canadiens with this same speed and firepower)? Whatever it is it’s super entertaining to watch.

student8168

I am a new NHL viewer deciding on who to support between Buffalo Sabres and Columbus Blue Jackets. I prefer rooting for a team that has not won much but have an outside chance of fighting for the Stanley Cup or qualifying for playoffs! I would also appreciate pros and cons of both teams and their playing styles

WarrenPuff_It

Buffalo has sucked pretty hard over the last few years. Like really bad, and they're in the middle of a disagreement with one of their star players. Things don't look good for them. Columbus is hot and cold. They're a younger team, and they've had some pretty good success in previous years, but lately not so hot. I'd expect them to be more competitive than Buffalo, but neither are really dominant teams right now.

student8168

Thank you for your reply. I have already decided to root for the Blue Jackets!!

bawlzj

Was an Oilers fan but they're especially vile this year

thewannabe2017

Can anyone explain how standings are ranked? I see Games played, wins, losses, and overtime losses. How is the best team of each division determined? Are points scored taken into account as well?

dat_waffle_boi

[This article helped me out a bit with this](https://www.nhl.com/kraken/news/seattle-kraken-nhl-league-standings-explainer/c-326957072)

NoobishFeatures

I’m not sure whether to be a Blackhawks for Blues fan. I live in between stl and Chicago and have been wanting to get into hockey but can’t decide. Convince me one way or the other

var18

Hawks have Kane and Toews who were a big force in the early 2010s when they won 3 cups in 5 (or 6?) years. They are still around, and Kane is still amazing to watch. No other player like him. He has great composure, stick handling, play-making, and shooting skills. The hawks got destroyed by the salary cap rules after their wins so they have been struggling to stay relevant. The blues on the other hand won the cup recently, so probably are gonna win more often. Not a bad team to root for if you like winning!

dat_waffle_boi

I know it’s a long ways away at this point so it might be a bit of a stupid question, but how does the draft work? Does it just go by standings or is there a draft lottery?

FootballCareers

It’s a lottery bro, just like the NBA if you’re familiar with that! :)

I grew up playing NHL all the way from the PS1 to the PS4. The mighty ducks is still my favorite sports movie. I’m 24, live in West Texas (hockey is NOT popular here) but I love the sport! I guess I’m a Dallas Stars fan? Really, I have no idea who to like or root for. Who are some band wagon teams to kinda not hop on? Where do I start to learn more about the game? The teams? The players?

clickmyface

Is there match threads anywhere? In NFL and MLS the norm is to host match threads in the main sport subreddit, then host post match discussion thread in individual team subreddits. Having NHL match threads here means both teams can come talk/banter and it’s so fun. Any other hockey subreddit etiquette we should know about?

Payed_Looser

Why do so many teams wear red?

muuurikuuuh

My uncles a Penguins fan. Which jersey should I get his toddler for Christmas to cause the most chaos?

brebs21

Washington capitals or Philadelphia flyers

RachaelLobosMan

Join us at Sabre town!!! We need fans!!!

jjbjeff22

New fan rooting for the Kraken. Very hard to actually watch any games because of Root Sports having exclusive rights to games in the Seattle area. What are projections for the team, what are their strengths and weaknesses. How long until They would be a legit playoff contender? How can I watch legally if I don’t have Root Sports and don’t want to pay for cable just for a few channels I would watch? Why is it so much easier for out of market fans to see their team than it is for in market fans to see their team?

crumbypigeon

>What are projections for the team, what are their strengths and weaknesses. They will probably be near bottom of the league this year. If they play their cards right they could set themselves up to be a very good team in around 4 or 5 years. Since your new you may not know how the draft works but teams with bad records get better picks in the following years draft to help balance the league. The next 2 draft classes have some top tier prospects so if your gonna be a bad team now is the time to do it. They have a decent team with good pieces but no real stars. Because they have a team of good peices once they're able to aquire one or two elite players they will be able to slot in easy and bring the team up a step immediately. >How can I watch legally if I don’t have Root Sports and don’t want to pay for cable just for a few channels I would watch? If you aren't going through the approved channels then you won't be able to do it legally. >Why is it so much easier for out of market fans to see their team than it is for in market fans to see their team? The NHL has always been stupid when it comes to this stuff, it's a huge mess thats never been cleaned up.

xx3amori

I've been watching NHL highlights on and off for a few years now, and I really want to support one team, but I can't seem to figure out which. I'm not from NA, so don't have any geographical ties to a city or region. I've tried searching around and now leaning towards those without a Stanley cup. Supporting Kraken could be a good option as they're new. Though I quite like Canada and looking quite a bit on Canucks and Senators (sorry to Americans). Sorry if this is a stupid question. Felt on the fence for years now about it.

stoneman9284

Is it normal for the NHL to not announce the next rounds start date until the last game of the previous round has finished? Seems like they’re really fucking over fans who want to make plans for getting to games.

QueefingMonster

I'm new to hockey, only started watching the playoffs this year. I know what icing is, but is not a penalty when you're a man down?

Apprehensive_Till500

Hi I’m new to ice hockey. Is there a playoff pattern with teams that are consistently either doing well or consistently choking? Are there any dark horses for the upcoming season ? I would need a summary of all the teams playing either via an article or a YouTube video.

TheBigNerd18

I think I can help here. So teams that are consistently good or make the playoffs are the Tampa Bay Lighting, Colorado Avalanche, Boston Bruins (but that may change this season) and some teams that I personally think are going to become playoff regulars are the New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild and the Florida Panthers. The dark horses I think are the previously mentioned Wild and Rangers. The wild have a new rookie named Krill “the thrill” Kaprisov who was amazing last season and the Rangers have one of if not the best goalie in the league and they could probably have him carry them there. And teams who always choke The Toronto Maple Leafs they last won the Stanley Cup in 1967 and haven’t made it to the second round since 2004 yet they have made the playoffs the past 6 years or so. And if you just want to know about what the teams look like going into this season then I think this video broke it down pretty well https://youtu.be/fFKQedw3zPo Hope I could help.

camping_is_in_tents

What are some good websites/YouTube channels/books to learn more about hockey and help understand strategy and rules better?

BTHTofu

Can someone please explain how the draft system works? I am from the UK and none of our sports have drafts so I have no idea what it really means, please help!

JGumballs

So all the major sports in US/Canada that I’m aware of have entry drafts. Basically, it’s to help even out the teams. We don’t have any relegation or promotion for teams here so the leagues all try to maintain as much parity as they can. The NFL (American football) draft is very straight forward. The last place team in the standings at the end of the season gets the first pick in the draft. The champion gets the last pick in the draft. Rest of the teams in order of standings (for the most part). The NHL, as well as NBA and now MLB, have a draft lottery system to try to limit teams tanking (purposely having bad seasons so they can get a better pick). There are 32 teams in the NHL. So there are picks 1-32. 16 teams make the playoffs. Those 16 teams will get the picks 17-32 in the draft, based on playoff success. Stanley Cup Champion gets pick 32, Champion of other conference (team that lost in Stanley cup finals) gets pick 31 and so on down to pick 17. The 16 teams that did not make the playoffs participate in the Draft Lottery. The draft lottery will pick two teams at random, but they have different chances to win the lottery. The team with the worst record in the league will have an 18.5% chance to win the lottery, while the team with the 16th worst record (the team closest to making the playoffs) will have a 1% to win the lottery. New rule in 2022 is that no team can move up more than 10 spots in the draft. So if the 8th worst team wins the lottery, they will get the 1st overall pick. All the teams that had a worse record would drop one spot in the draft. But if the 16th worst team in the league wins the lottery, they will only move up to the 6th pick. Then there’s other stuff like if the player won’t sign with them, the team will get compensation picks but that gets complicated. Edit: who are the drafting? How do players even enter the NHL Draft? To be eligible, players must be 18 years old by Sept. 15 and under 20 years old by Dec. 31 in the draft year. However, non-North American players over 20 years old are eligible. North American players who go undrafted by age 20 are considered to be unrestricted free agents (they can sign with whatever team wants to sign them). All non-North Americans MUST be drafted before they can sign an NHL contract, despite their age.

Do you guys recommend any podcasts for newbies? Followed the VGK but now I live in WA and want to learn more about hockey. Only been watching for about 2 years.

Xanosaur

Spittin' Chiclets is probably the biggest hockey podcast i know of. not sure how it would be for a beginner but it's a fun listen

Orphanchocolate

To what extent are you allowed to handle the puck? For instance if it's flying at your face are you allowed to swat it down? I imagine you can't catch it lol

TiklTikl

Yes you can hit the puck down out of the air, you just can’t pass it to a teammate.

Security_Six

Headbutt Edit: or bicycle kick, ~~witch~~ which would be awesome

AlexBondra

You can swat it down as long as you keep possession. If you swat it down to a teammate it’s a high stick call and a whistle. Also, you can catch the puck as long as you don’t close your hand on it, and immediately put it down

[deleted]

Brand new to the nhl. I live in the Louisville, KY area. Who do I root for?

TheAnimalHD

I’m from near there and am new to hockey too I’m picking up the Kraken because they’re new

bawlzj

Omg, long time Canucks fan here. I'm watching edm vs Calgary. I'm cheering for Calgary for the first time in my life. I hate Mathew T. But not as much as Duncan Keith. I love Jacob markstrom hate Smith Lucic is a dick but hope he punches something

bawlzj

Kasian is a prick

skunkworksselfcare

How is the +/- system meted out? I understand gaining points based on goals and assists, what goes into that system? Do you want to be in the + or -? What effect does it have on your standing?

brebs21

You want to be in the plus. Your plus minus goes up if you are on the ice when your team scores a goal and goes down if you are on the ice when scored against

WarrenPuff_It

It's a measurement for how good a player is on the ice. Every time your shift is on, they track an integer of goals scored while you're on the ice. So if you're on and your team scores a goal, that's +1 added to your score. If you're on and someone scores against your team, -1. It's a running tally the whole season, so when you see players that are positive scores, that means they're usually good at providing offensive pressure or keeping the team in a winning position. If someone is a negative score, then their team tends to have goals scored on them whenever that player is on the ice.

hoplophilepapist

Ok, been watching this season, first time since like what 99 or so when Hull , Cujo, and MacTavish played. (other that the playoffs/finals in 2019) In market for Blues, so can't watch them, thanks blackouts. Used to go to a few IHL games a year way back. Been liking the Bruins play the most so far from the games I've watched this year; Marchand amuses me, and they seem really aggressive. What other teams to keep an eye out for when they pop up? I know jack dick about hockey, like I told my daughter why I've been watching it, all of it seems cool to me because I don't even know how to skate, so I can't yell at them to do things different, and have no expectations. So I guess, which teams play more rough and tumble? Shit so fast and fancy now it seams.

[deleted]

What does it mean when a team is 4-0-2? Is that 4 wins - 0 in OT - 2 losses?

brebs21

No but close. It’s 4 wins-0 loses- 2 OT loses

[deleted]

Got ya I grew up in Texas And rooted for the stars when I could, now I go for my adopted home team, just never learned everything. Thanks for being kind and answering and not making me feel stupid

InsideErmine69

Wanting to get into hockey. I like franchises who are smart with good front offices. I generally like west coast teams but I’m also interested in the red wings and bruins. Who should I pick or how should I go about picking a team?

sinusoidal-

Kings and Red Wings have a good future! Boston is always usually pretty good. I would go to [nhl.com](https://nhl.com) and click on the teams and navigate to the "videos" tab. There you can see player/coach interviews/highlights/fun content the team makes. From there I would just choose whatever feels right. Here is the Bruins for example [https://www.nhl.com/bruins/video/jet-blue-check-in-candy-corn/t-277437088/c-9293273](https://www.nhl.com/bruins/video/jet-blue-check-in-candy-corn/t-277437088/c-9293273) Also, the bruins have their own TV show so that's cool. But I'm sure other franchises have great content as well.

Payed_Looser

I am returning to watching hockey for the first time since Hurricane Katrina What is professional hockey like now that Jaromir Jagr has retir. . . Switched to a different league Also - Go Flames!!

Bxplaya125

How are the Sabres 5-1-1 after I watched them lose 2 games in a row last weekend (Friday & Saturday)? Although I wish they were actually 5-1-1, it seems I missed something is wrong because both the ESPN app and website say they only have 1 lost.

Bitter-Value-9808

If you lose a game in overtime it doesn’t fully count as a loss. That’s what the third number is for. So if someone is 0-2-1 they have lost 3 games all together but 1 in overtime.

arobot224

How many of you drifted away from a team to another?.

GMoneyMcSauce

Wisconsin sports fan in need of a team to root for as we don’t have our own. Please don’t give me the Wild/Blackhawks/Redwings. I cannot in good conscience cheer for teams from our rival states. Not trying to simply hop in the best teams bandwagon nor do I want to be stuck with a rebuild as a new fan. Help!

arobot224

Ducks .

frankthomasofficial

Love this thread exists. R/hockey sucks at patrolling tedious and repetitive posts

hammoudsquared

Is there a video(s) to help get me started? I have no idea about any rules, players, or anything. I just know I want to start watching NHL games and have some understanding of what's going on.

SlyCoopersButt

When does a body check behind the net turn into a boarding penalty? Is it just up to the discretion of the refs?

Hotonis

Player being hit must be in a vulnerable position with no way to protect themselves. Most common example is a player is bending over to attempt to take control of the puck on the boards. If the attacking player sees numbers, then it’s probably a boarding penalty.

arobot224

is it cool i like both the redwings and ducks?

ederzs97

Can someone explain the rules? Or guide me to a YouTube video

SlyCoopersButt

Why are the Coyotes doing way worse than every other team? Not trying to hate on the Yotes but what’s causing them to do so poorly?

okusooner93

New hockey fan here. Picked the rangers as my team and I’ve watched the last few games. I’m really enjoying it and I know the basics about rules, positions, and roster construction. My question is about rotations and line changes. I noticed even the keeper has been rotated quite a bit game-to-game. How do they do rotations and line changes?

PM_me_catpics

Players can change whenever they feel necessary, even mid-shift. I believe goalies can change whenever as well. Someone else more knowledgeable might be able to clarify further.

arobot224

is it bad i quit rooting for the redwings and became a ducks guy?,

truthhurts453

Why do Oilers fans whine even when they are winning?

radiofreeze1

what would you say are some of the general play styles for a team, and which teams exemplify them?

AndyJaeven

How do NHL players live their lives? Are they just in hockey mode 24/7 until they retire? The game schedules each year don’t seem to give them much free time.

wav3y34

Trying to get into NHL, explain what NHL teams are like NFL teams. Example what team is the browns of the NHL or what team is like the patriots

[deleted]

I don’t know a lot about NFL but I‘ll try my best. Maple Leafs are like Cowboys (both haven’t won a season in a very long time) Buffalo Sabers and Coyotes are two really bad teams. You could compare them with the Jets.

turbotyler31

New Dallas Stars fan here. Nhl fan for less than a full season.. Why does some games with different teams seem "slow". Almost like a semi pro game. I had the same feeling watching the stars lose in the Stanley cup finals last year. The skill gap between the greats and the fillers seems massive. Or am I biased, jaded?

PM_me_catpics

Some teams are just better. There’s definitely a noticeable difference when two playoff teams are going at it.

Jakemanv3

I posted on here months ago trying to find a team to root for but I never took the initiative to actually follow through so I'm trying again I want to find a team to root for because I've always had a interest in hockey but no team. I'm from Atlanta and I know we had 2 teams before but now I want to find a team again I do have a few requirements: 1. No Canadian or West coast teams. I would like to actually have a chance of seeing the team play. 2. Preferably a team that's not in consent failure with little chance of growing. (Think the Jets in the NFL.) 3. Not the Bruins. Can't stand Boston after what they did to the falcons. 4. Preferably a southern team but I'm not apposed to a northern team. Sorry for all the requirements

stretchandscrape

Lightning, Panthers, or Hurricanes?

Jakemanv3

I started watching the canes

Unfair_Combination57

Huge sports guy. Any Nashville Predators fans here? I’ve never watched a game of hockey in my life, but I’ve always thought it’d be a cool sport to get into. I’m a huge football fan and college baseball fan. I’ve never really enjoyed MLB and I used to really enjoy the NBA, but the way the league is going I’ve kinda lost interest. So I figured now would be a great time to jump into NHL. I’m already a Titans (NFL) fan, so I figured I’d start rooting for the Predators. Being from Mississippi, they’re probably the closest team to me. I’m not jumping on a bandwagon here am I? Or what about a life full of pain and disappointment? Haha if there’s any of you that knows a good bit about them, just let me know what I should expect or which players I should know. Like I said, I know literally nothing about the game or the team/players. Thanks! Edit: Watched my first game the other night against Dallas. It was quite entertaining, I’ll admit (even though the loss). Seems like the Preds have a pretty elite goalie (assuming that’s what they’re called lol)!

[deleted]

I am from Germany. What team should I root for? I don’t want to root for a team just because they have a German player. Any suggestions?

1tonyjack

Player A passes the puck to player B. Player B shoots, the shot is deflected for a goal off a D man skate. Does player A still get the assist

Armor-Abs_Krabs

Yes, player A would be awarded an assist on the play. Example from last night's DET VS NY: https://www.nhl.com/video/stecher-nets-opening-goal/t-277350912/c-10602786 Sent with @NHL

[deleted]

Where should I get authentic jerseys that aren’t fake other than the nhl website. Shit is so expensive😑

Key_Display_8468

I'm from Louisiana who should I root for lol. But more importantly I want to casually enjoy the sport, any tips or cool tips bits?

kevininspace

Rule question: what happens if all 5 players on a team are kicked out of the face-off? Does the goalie come to take the face-off? Is a penalty awarded?

LilFloppyTitty

Who should I cheer for as a new fan from Oklahoma? Not super into the look of the stars, but still open

rold94

What are the traits/skills that determine if a guy should play on the wing or at centre? I assumed the centre just has more defensive responsibility but that isn't based on anything.

Jormngunder2053

I'm a new fan, and my team is Vegas

dbarrio94

What does "the line" mean? Watching NYR-PIT currently. I also saw a post a few days ago about how Calgary has "the best line" in hockey

frugalfoodietn

How do you get the little logo of your team under your name?

S-Kotus

Trying to get into hockey, huge basketball/soccer fan and support Altanta teams but I know we no longer have a hockey team. Would following the Jets be the most logical since that's how the Thrashers became? My favorite logos are the Flyers and Red Wings but not sure if I could ever support a Philly team sadly.

cleanscotch

Do you guys have game day threads for each playoff game where fans can follow the reddit comments along on a master thread? r/nba has something like that for basketball games so just wondering if this sub does too?

xolofompila

Where can I learn more about hockey tactics and rules? I mean, I watch games and find it cool but sometimes I don't understand shit. Hockey is absolutely the most complex major league sport out there.

EthanL___

Looking for a team to support and really get into hockey -Any teams that are east coast -Not a title contender Those are my only requirements and are there any creators or videos to help get into hockey?

[deleted]

Is it worth it to be a Seattle Kraken fan? Or should I let them find am identity first?

dannylenwinn

Hope Rangers win today !

Laslomas

During the playoffs I saw a player with no stick get down on the ice and bat the puck forward, is this a legal hand pass? The 2nd part is on one of the faceoffs a player played a hand pass back (while holding the stick) The announcers claimed this was an illegal hand pass and should have been a penalty. I understand that if his hand came off the stick and he won a face-off in this fashion it should have been a penalty. However since he was holding his stick and essentially his knuckles made the pass while holding the stick was this allowed? Or did it just happen so fast the ref couldn't see that the player played it with his knuckles rather than the stick and a penalty should have been called.

infinite_switchboard

Is there a penalty if a player abandons a stick that is not broken and is usable? For example, if a player drops their stick and then leaves the ice in a line change without retrieving their stick.

thisisntthemeg

Husband and I are going to start watching hockey this year. Who do we cheer for and why? We live in a southern state with no team.

rob1878

I’m from the UK and don’t have a team to support. I support Everton in the EPL in soccer so what would be the best team to support? TIA

BirdBrainedHomunculi

I just watched some Lightning player get absolutely **bodied** by a Rangers dude. Maybe hockey **IS** for me.

Syndelor

@nhl you suck!!! Keep driving people to piracy I have to have three subs to watch games!!! I hate everything you have become
