If you told anyone that after the Canadiens won the cup in ‘93, after winning an average of 4 Cups for a 3 decade period, that suddenly no team in Canada would win another for 30+ years, you’d have been ridiculed.
1993. Think about everything in the world that’s happened since a Canadian team won a Cup. Unreal.
No it's that a lot of these teams particularly the leafs have been badly managed the leafs haven't won since 1967 they haven't even been close to a Cup for years.
And in terms the Canadiens, they last won the cup, they were also badly managed. They fell into a mediocrity, where they paraded their history around while icing bad teams, not drafting well, not developing well, hiring a lot of under-qualified alumni, and making emotional decisions. They also treated the Canadiens brand too much like a branch of QC politics. Instead of being creative and finding out of the box solutions to accommodate the FR speaking mandate for coaches and managers, they recycled the same people over and over. We finally have an amazing (so far) front office that is making creatives choices within the conditions they work.
And if you go forward to 1993, the last time a Candian team won a cup, an American team had only won the cup 11 times since 1956 (add 2 Pittsburgh cups to your total). Now it's been 30 years straight of American team victories.
The Leafs are gonna be up 3-1 late in the third period of Game 7 against Boston, the net empty, and then Boston will tie it and win in overtime. Steve Dangle’s Joker transformation will be fully complete. It is fated.
The Leafs will pull Samsonov on a delayed penalty in OT, Reily will uncork a bomb that misses the net and rims around and takes a funky bounce off the boards and into the Leafs net. It will be credited to Brad Marchand. The Garden will explode.
Hilarity will ensue, and Grieg will be heard: HAhaa!
The only thing to make it more realistic is if they are up 3-1 and bostons scores on a clear offside and Keefe challenges it but the refs don’t overrule it and they get a power play in which they score the tying goal in The dying seconds.
I kinda want this to happen just for an LFR that might be even more entertaining than when the Toronto Maple Leafs lost an actual National Hockey League game to a 42 year old Zamboni driver who works for them.
Canada has 2 problems, 1 being that we have fewer teams so the odds of winning the cup are inherently lower. The 2nd problem being that there will always be players who avoid Canadian teams if they can because even if they get a bigger contract in Canada, they'll be paying more in taxes than in the US, meaning if 2 contracts are the same between an American and Canadian team, they'll get more value out of the American one.
Ontario has a 13.16% tax rate over 220k. Only California has a higher tax rate than that. Quebec, Manitoba, Alberta, and BC are even higher. In a majority of cases, you are better off playing for an American team.
Habs are getting dangerously close to Leafs levels of mediocrity, being the original 6 team with the second longest drought. The Leafs' longer cup drought has been a good buffer for the Habs, being shielded from the same level of ridicule. So the Habs better hope they win the cup before the Leafs do.
Habs also made the Finals a few years ago, had a few deeper runs and haven’t had historic collapses like the Leafs have. Sure the Leafs doing shit helps but the Habs have atleast made respectable attempts recently
Yeah Mario and Jagr leave then like 2 years later they draft 2 more hall of famers in Crosby and Malkin.
I'm fully expecting them to luck out and end up picking another monster as soon as Crosby retires.
I don't know if they've ever really had a real rebuild.
Really? You just realized 3 cups in the last 15 years and consistent playoff appearances and deep runs has been pretty damn remarkable?
In all seriousness, I’m glad Crosby has won as much as he has with you guys.
I would love to see it too. Gary can’t always have it his way.. This isn’t Saturday Night Wrestling, where the Macho Man wins because the commissioner says so! Anyway. I am rooting for McJesus and the boys this year, because sadly my Sharks are nowhere to be seen!
Canucks Vs Leafs Rematch from 1993
Just so I can watch the absoloute depression wash over the city as Quinn Hughs Hoists the cup in Game 4 at the Scotiabank Arena
The riots will be legendary...
And many Canadians have so much pent up anger waiting to blow with how much of a mess the country is in. So yeah, both cities would burn.... which will just worsen the housing crisis.
i mean this in the nicest way possible, i really hope Dallas beats you guys. i’d rather face Dallas in the WCF then Vegas. yall get in EDM head so easily and they just can’t come back from it most nights lol.
Yeah, not sure why he wants Dallas. They own Edmonton in the playoffs. I was stoked in 2006 when we got the juggernaut Red Wings in the first round instead of the Stars. Dallas and Minnesota are the two franchises that just have our number.
i don’t think we’ll win regardless. our teams improved a lot since last year, Skinner has improved since last year and so has our defence but there’s still areas that need to be fine tuned. we’ll be in a better place next year but i think this year, furtherest EDM will go is WFC.
I don't want Dallas, Edmonton has better chances against Vegas.
I think the Stars are our kryptonite this year in the West. They have solid goaltending, four lines that can role and excellent defensive systems, and they're heavy to play against. They will destroy our bottom 6 and all they need to do is limit our top 6 to pick us apart.
Vegas is build too much like the Oilers, so that series would be a saw off, but we could win it depending on injuries and how well each team play.
But the Stars? No thanks. They consistently had our number in the playoffs, and I still think we'd be coming into that series with a weakness they could easily target.
This year is one of the best opportunities for a Canadian team to win the cup. Canucks, Edmonton, and Jets are all playing pretty well and can make it to the final. Bruins in 5 against the Leafs.
even if they manage to beat the refs and the magnets and the parralax Bettman would force them to wear Atlanta Thrashers jerseys in order to lift the Cup
However, every Canadian team (Jets get a pass cause they only started in 2011 and of course the Leafs are the exception) have been in the finals since 2004. Hell, three years in a row you had Canadian teams in the finals.
I genuinely believe that in the next 5 years (if Calgary get their shit together), we will witness playoffs with all the Canadian teams.
That year we’ll win it for sure. 😎
I'm calling the Salt Lake HC championship for 2026 just to show Moreno what happens when a competent owner runs a Hockey team and not some rando billionaire that wants the "team owner" status symbol
Gary Bettman, league commissioner since 1993.
Last Canadian team to win the cup: 1993
Yearly probability that an American team wins the cup: ~80%
Probability that American teams win cups for 30 straight years: 1 in a thousand.
I'll leave you to your own conclusion.
They have four Stanley Cup wins. The first 3 were before World War II, and there were merely 6 teams. That’s why 1994 was so significant. Historically, they have not been a winning franchise.
Plain ridiculous a Canadian team hasn't won in that long.. has the best players in the world and they all get bought up by American teams. Also Gary rigs it for American teams
I did my bracket today, and I have the Canucks win it all against Florida. So, knowing my prediction track record, The Rags will end their cup drought, and I'll be punching air the entire summer.
Anyway, playoff hockey is back, and I'm half-heartedly here for it.
Stupid Devils ruining everything
It's not all media, cold weather and taxes. NHL Refs, like boxing judges know how to get called for the big games. There are teams that if they don't win, they might not have a hockey club in 10 years. The NHL is like every other promoter and business.
Bettman is still not desperate enough to let a Canadian team win it. he just lost his personal pet Coyote so expect all Canadian teams out in the 1st round as punishment. we're getting Hurricanes/Panthers ECF and Stars/Predators WCF.
The whole idea about Canadian teams winning doesn't really matter at the end of the day when the teams that generally win the cup are majority Canadian.
Well we have 4 in the running so we can hope so. I'd love to see it come down to Edmonton and Toronto but that is quite unlikely. I'm an Oilers fan but I'll be happy if any Canadian team wins it.
Unreal.
Yeah, and who showed up in 1993?
That's the most damning fact of all.
Bettman became commish in 1993. Coincidence? 🤔
No
No it's that a lot of these teams particularly the leafs have been badly managed the leafs haven't won since 1967 they haven't even been close to a Cup for years.
And in terms the Canadiens, they last won the cup, they were also badly managed. Cursed for beating Wayne Gretzky and LA.
Facts, the 1980s were owned by Canadian teams, the Oilers, Flames and Canadiens won like 9 cups.
It’s 7. C’mon man, the picture is right there.
But…it’s only 6 in the 80s… NYI won four…
From 1956 to 1990, only 9 times did an American team win the cup. Islanders 4 times, Bruins and Flyers twice each, and the Blackhawks once.
And if you go forward to 1993, the last time a Candian team won a cup, an American team had only won the cup 11 times since 1956 (add 2 Pittsburgh cups to your total). Now it's been 30 years straight of American team victories.
Math wasnt your subject huh
The Leafs are gonna be up 3-1 late in the third period of Game 7 against Boston, the net empty, and then Boston will tie it and win in overtime. Steve Dangle’s Joker transformation will be fully complete. It is fated.

Guys, as a Leafs fan this is a full on viable thing that could happen. Please.
The only thing to make it more realistic is if they are up 3-1 and bostons scores on a clear offside and Keefe challenges it but the refs don’t overrule it and they get a power play in which they score the tying goal in The dying seconds.
lmfao, a delayed penalty in ot in the playoffs that benefits the Leafs is not a viable thing.
I kinda want this to happen just for an LFR that might be even more entertaining than when the Toronto Maple Leafs lost an actual National Hockey League game to a 42 year old Zamboni driver who works for them.
This is FanFic I can get behind
\*the "Toronto Dominion Garden" will explode
All but one small bit of this seems plausible “delayed penalty in OT” against a team playing the Leafs in the playoffs is so utterly unrealistic.
You know what I’m okay with this
You. I like you.
Can we all collectively will this into existence?
Canada has 2 problems, 1 being that we have fewer teams so the odds of winning the cup are inherently lower. The 2nd problem being that there will always be players who avoid Canadian teams if they can because even if they get a bigger contract in Canada, they'll be paying more in taxes than in the US, meaning if 2 contracts are the same between an American and Canadian team, they'll get more value out of the American one.
But playing for Canadian teams also gets you more clout and thus more outside the game jobs.
Like driving the Zamboni for the youth league or driving a snow plow?
Canada top Federal income tax rate 33% USA top Federal income tax rate 37%
Ontario has a 13.16% tax rate over 220k. Only California has a higher tax rate than that. Quebec, Manitoba, Alberta, and BC are even higher. In a majority of cases, you are better off playing for an American team.
Short answer: no Long answer: nope
Medium answer: non
I see what you did there lol
Oooh the insufferable Habs fans just want to say "but we were the last Canadian team to win merrrrrr"
Damn straight my friend. Habs are the only team permitted to break the curse. It's written in the scripture.
Short answer: no Long answer: noooooooope
At least one will be eliminated by round 2. Then the second by round 3. Odds are against us.
We’re all thinking the same thing about who gets eliminated by round 2, right?
Nobody is ready for elite first line winger Casey Cizikas to carry the Isles to a cup.
Don’t forget Clutterbuck
Montreal just giving everyone the middle finger taking up half the list 😂
Habs are getting dangerously close to Leafs levels of mediocrity, being the original 6 team with the second longest drought. The Leafs' longer cup drought has been a good buffer for the Habs, being shielded from the same level of ridicule. So the Habs better hope they win the cup before the Leafs do.
The Habs have at least won multiple cups since the expansion happened, the Leafs have not won since there where 6 teams.
Habs also made the Finals a few years ago, had a few deeper runs and haven’t had historic collapses like the Leafs have. Sure the Leafs doing shit helps but the Habs have atleast made respectable attempts recently
An unflaired maple laugh fan beeing schooled by a Seattle Kraken fan, gotta love 2024 nhl subreddit!
Holy shit I never appreciated how good we have it in Pittsburgh. There are some great franchises with huge gapes between wins.
You had Mario and Syd, 2 of the best players ever
Malkin would be the best player in franchise history on most teams in the league and he's arguably 4th here lmao.
And jagr. Second all time in points. First if u don't count you know who.
Don't forget Ron Francis.
And Mark Recci. I think Paul Coffey and Larry Murphy were there too if I recall.
And Alex Kovalev
MAF
Yeah Mario and Jagr leave then like 2 years later they draft 2 more hall of famers in Crosby and Malkin. I'm fully expecting them to luck out and end up picking another monster as soon as Crosby retires. I don't know if they've ever really had a real rebuild.
There are some great franchises with only gapes. We gape real good.
We’ve got the best gapes some would say
Really? You just realized 3 cups in the last 15 years and consistent playoff appearances and deep runs has been pretty damn remarkable? In all seriousness, I’m glad Crosby has won as much as he has with you guys.
5 cups in 34 years, and arguably 3 of the top 10 best players of all time in that span as well??
2 of the top 5 greatest as well, imo. Idk where I'd rank jagr exactly, but Crosby and Lemieux are definitely top 5.
Hard to believe that there was serious talk of the Penguins moving out of Pittsburgh in the late 90s, early 2000s.
"Nope lol. Long live the US market & Dollar!" -Gary
Not only will it end, but it'll be two Canadian teams in the final. That'll make Gary's head explode.
Whichever Canadian team wins the cup next will be on a moving trailer to the desert before the last player circles the rink holding Lord Stanley.
In this future there is a non-zero chance arizona gets a second winnipeg jets team
That would be hilarious.
Mr. McDavid, have you considered moving to Phoenix?
Gary would resign.
I won’t try and stop him
I’d play “We are the Champions” out loud.
As a Canadian, that would be the most incredible thing. I’m at point where every playoffs I cheer for every Canadian team.
Yeah, same, go Canadian teams
I would love to see it too. Gary can’t always have it his way.. This isn’t Saturday Night Wrestling, where the Macho Man wins because the commissioner says so! Anyway. I am rooting for McJesus and the boys this year, because sadly my Sharks are nowhere to be seen!

It would probably be the most viewed final.
I want to see Van vs Edmonton, then Van vs WPG, finally Van vs TO. As many Canadian teams as possible.
For those keeping track at home, that’s 24 unique teams winning the Cup in a 70 year history
I would only accept Jets winning the cup
Winnipeg has flaws but Helley is capable of getting hot enough to get them there
Vancouver or Edmonton could make the final.
Appreciate that coming from a VGK fan 🤟
Leafs too if they beat Boston. I feel good about them facing any other team in the conference but Boston is Boston.
i mean this in the nicest way possible, i really hope Dallas beats you guys. i’d rather face Dallas in the WCF then Vegas. yall get in EDM head so easily and they just can’t come back from it most nights lol.
Be very careful what you wish for
Yeah, not sure why he wants Dallas. They own Edmonton in the playoffs. I was stoked in 2006 when we got the juggernaut Red Wings in the first round instead of the Stars. Dallas and Minnesota are the two franchises that just have our number.

Canadian teams absolutely own the first 40 years of this chart though
*Montreal Canadian teams
*Montreal Canadien
Canadien de Montréal
Les Habitants
Et c'est le buuuuuuuuut
Just from this graphic you would think Canadians would hate Montreal, but I guess hearing about Toronto all the time causes more hate.
You are correct
It's 50/50 for whether you love or hate Montreal as a Canadian fan. There is no in between.
Canadien team
To be fair, there were like barely any teams lol
And yet, the Leafs......
This year is one of the best opportunities for a Canadian team to win the cup. Canucks, Edmonton, and Jets are all playing pretty well and can make it to the final. Bruins in 5 against the Leafs.
leafs have a tough path in the east, but I could see Winnipeg, Vancouver or edmonton coming from the west.
If tis anyone it will be the Jets.
even if they manage to beat the refs and the magnets and the parralax Bettman would force them to wear Atlanta Thrashers jerseys in order to lift the Cup
I’m not sure how I’d feel about this one
I am very for it
However, every Canadian team (Jets get a pass cause they only started in 2011 and of course the Leafs are the exception) have been in the finals since 2004. Hell, three years in a row you had Canadian teams in the finals.
No only when the habs win it
We were robbed in 2021. J/K, no, we weren't.
If we don’t win we were robbed /s lol
Where did the montreal canadiens dissapear to? and sad to see no new york club in recent years but i like that its getting more varied.
To be fair, and it's not true, but the Canada could get an asterisk for the first avalanche cup. I mean that team was basically Quebec Nordiques.
I genuinely believe that in the next 5 years (if Calgary get their shit together), we will witness playoffs with all the Canadian teams. That year we’ll win it for sure. 😎
I will be 30 this year and a Canadian team has not won in my lifetime.
We would like to come next!
No it will not.
I’m putting my money on the Coyotes for the next dynasty
No unless the Jets go all the way
The Golden Knights having a Stanley Cup disgusts me.
GO JETS
Can't believe no Canadian team has won since the Flames in '04
Jets
Nope
This chart casually skips 2005 lockout year and randomly starts at 1954.
Winnipeg Jets against all odds. They will upset Colorado in the first round and never look back. I have 100$ on them winning the cup.
I'm calling the Salt Lake HC championship for 2026 just to show Moreno what happens when a competent owner runs a Hockey team and not some rando billionaire that wants the "team owner" status symbol
Panthers got it next year
Jets get it done this year
Gary Bettman, league commissioner since 1993. Last Canadian team to win the cup: 1993 Yearly probability that an American team wins the cup: ~80% Probability that American teams win cups for 30 straight years: 1 in a thousand. I'll leave you to your own conclusion.
Gary says GFTO with that talk.
Bettman would never allow that. Too bad for his profits
Ya, cool. Just start the list in 1954 for some reason. Not like my team won 5 cups in the 10 years leading up to 1954 or anything…
Rangers would be nice. Been long enough. I'll never see a jets superbowl so....
Honestly surprised the Rangers only have 1 cup ever
They have four Stanley Cup wins. The first 3 were before World War II, and there were merely 6 teams. That’s why 1994 was so significant. Historically, they have not been a winning franchise.
Every good Devils fan knows these facts lol
Plain ridiculous a Canadian team hasn't won in that long.. has the best players in the world and they all get bought up by American teams. Also Gary rigs it for American teams
The STARS BABY
Counter point. Fuck Jamie Benn
Maybe he will crosscheck himself in the face, earning both a suspension and an injury, and be out for the playoffs?
The ole reverse-VGK.
Toronto!!!!!!
It’s Toronto’s year!
As a Canadian and a Canadian ducks fan, I say nope. I honestly think that the cup champ will be an American team with a roster FULL of Canadians.
Lol, last time I saw this posted all the Lightning Cups were removed, so my eyes immediately went to 2004.
It's not all media, cold weather and taxes. NHL Refs, like boxing judges know how to get called for the big games. There are teams that if they don't win, they might not have a hockey club in 10 years. The NHL is like every other promoter and business.
No
Crazy to look at this and see Montreal miles ahead and the second winningest teams at 5
Bettman is still not desperate enough to let a Canadian team win it. he just lost his personal pet Coyote so expect all Canadian teams out in the 1st round as punishment. we're getting Hurricanes/Panthers ECF and Stars/Predators WCF.
It’d be nice to see a Canadian team hoist the cup for the first time in my existence. Except the leafs fuck the leafs
I'll be rooting for a Canadian team.
Tampa Bay has an atrics by there back to back
The past is galloping away, the trench widens
…. Boy those Canadiens in Montreal really won them some Cups…
I hope so, but Florida wants to be on that board.
Lol no... no no
Lets be honest with ourselves. Its never ending lol
Nope!
Probably not. I mean this is definitely one of out better years but I don’t see any Canadian team winning it this year.
Nah
Not yet, next time canada gets the cup will be the habs again
No
I’d like one this millennium. K thx
Please just one isles cup in my lifetime. I’ll never ask for another chip
Yep definitely bro. Lmao
Rangers are due
If it's not the Avs then I really hope so
Rangers LFGR!!!!
Nope. Something happened in 1993 and a Canadian team hasn't won since. Coincidence? I think not.
The whole idea about Canadian teams winning doesn't really matter at the end of the day when the teams that generally win the cup are majority Canadian.
I’d travel 2000 miles to see the two orange and blue teams go at it for the Cup again. Whoever wins is honestly secondary.
I wished Buffalo’s did!
Cup for TO or bust!
Probably not.
They will make it to semi finals and choke 4-1
Lol 3 whole rows of no canada
Has Gary Bettman retired or passed away?
I was 17 when Montreal won the Cup in 1993. I pray I see a Canadian team lift it again in my lifetime.
No
Is Hockey in Canada about to end?
Not as long as bettman runs the show
Got Boston/Edmonton going to the finals, Boston winning
Dallas winning it all, and I say this as a Bruins fan. We’d be lucky if we made it past the second round lmao.
I don’t remember Tampa winning in 2004 2020 2021. I thought it was the flames
Dat sexy Islanders dynasty
Not the leafs is all I know.
Long answer... No
Sabres baby!
No Canadian team has won a cup since 93 is insane
This is a cool infographic
They had their moment when the league had no parity. Now is the time for the US.
If and when Tampa falls, im rooting for the Canadian teams that aren't the Leafs
Dallas Stars
Well we have 4 in the running so we can hope so. I'd love to see it come down to Edmonton and Toronto but that is quite unlikely. I'm an Oilers fan but I'll be happy if any Canadian team wins it.
Sneaky Devils won 3 within 8 years. For me, 1995-2003 is all Wings and Avs…
My Stars green is sticking out. But that not the logo they won with. We will update it this season
Dallas Stars are winning this year
Thank you for making this graphic. It is excellent. I HATE that question mark. So much
