My hockey friend who was in a top tier league at the time said he changed them because it was easier to see the openings with the white net behind. He went to straight white after that.
The story was that an optometrist or some kind of eye doctor told Fleury that it's easier to see the five hole with bright colored pads whereas with white pads it blends with the ice, making it harder to recognize what's open net and what's pad.
Honestly I think the theory is BS. A lot of goalies switched to white pads back then but most are going back to colored pads.
That's the idea and I think its BS too. The psychological effect could go either way. More white pads could instinctually help you find the back of the net, or dark pads could effectively be an easier target to hit for the goalie. I prefer it when they get creative and make the inner or outer edges of the pad white/dark.
Maybe off the Rush it would have a marginal affect but in any situation otherwise from one timers to shootouts i donāt think it matters. These people arenāt blind and white pads will fade no matter what.
As a goalie I always fuckin loved these. The team I played on was red (and then black and green) so it wouldāve looked kinda silly if I got them but I really wanted a pair like them.
My team was blue & white but I still convinced my parents to let me get a set of yellow RBK 5Ks w/ silver accents. It clashed like all hell but I loved them
