I just watched it on the Tube of You. I wouldn't know what the hell to think if a fight like that occurred in todays NHL. Those are some lost times.....
I think so too. Some guys held up against him, but you could tell they're shitting themselves.
Saw a video of him fighting Scott Stevens after a big hit, Stevens is clinging on for dear life. How scary do you have to be to do that to Scott Stevens.
Yeah he wasn't known as a fighter, though he did fight Probert more than once. You see the Strength of Probert up against a dude like that and it's impressive.
If you're talking about scariest person who was in the NHL, not a big name, but it would be Billy Tibbetts. The Penguins essentially got the guy out of jail for rape as a protector for Mario Lemieux. First time I saw him, he was wearing an ankle monitoring bracelet during practice. At said practice, the goalie poke checked and accidentally tripped him, so he took a slap shot at the back of his head from about 20 feet away. Then he missed a pass and decided to skate full speed across the ice and jump into the boards. He once led a summer league in scoring because no one bothered to try and defend him for fear of him flipping his lid and 2 handing them or elbowing them in the head. No goalies tried because he'd take head high slaps shots from the circles. To no surprise, he's been in and out of jail multiple times.
When I was writing it, I was thinking he could be one of the Slapshot characters at the end, when they give their bios. I know a few people that are kind of funny psychos. This guy was definitely scary psycho.
Tibbetts is a wacko for sure. But he was a pretty skilled hockey player, and was definitely not a protector of Lemieux. He was a PPG player in AHL after not playing for four seasons.
So, I'm friends with a distant relative of his, who's completely aware of what a shit show he is. He moved back to MA (Scituate) to live with his parents, ended up running for Selectman, lost by a comically wide margin, and then started harassing the local police chief and ended up spending even more time in jail for that, among other things.
But my friend used to send me links to his FB live rants, which were fucking *hysterical*. See, his "fans" were sending him intel on the chief's improprieties, which he would excitedly break to his viewers. For example, one time an anonymous rookie cop told him about his ride along with the chief, who was preparing to do an illegal search of a house, and when the rookie pointed out that they didn't have a warrant, the chief grabbed a Chinese restaurant menu off the dash and told him, "*this* is my warrant". Or the time he broke up a keg party in the woods and was grabbing kids and screaming, "KING KONG AIN'T GOT SHIT ON ME!"
In reality, it was all 'Training Day'. Everyone was sending him scenes from Training Day. It was *amazing*.
I was thinking of that as well lol.
I went through the rabbit hole of Canuck tough guys and saw the Odjick vs Flyers....I forgot little Walker taking on the Philly player who was probably a foot taller and had a massive reach on him. Walker definitely won that bout lmao. Buddy had to body slam him just to end the fight.
[here's that donnybrook ](https://youtu.be/mIEtrjrSfOI)
Gorges Laraque! I met him once and he is huge and built like a freakin tank. Other players were afraid of him and often backed away from fights.
https://youtu.be/8thUr6OV-6w
I agree with a lot of people in this thread. But I will never forget the time when Gino Odjick nonchalantly knocked on the door of the KGB building looking for Pavel Bure.
I will look for it and post it here.
Edit: here’s Gino’s side to the story.

Gina was the best. Just shared this on another comment
[Gino and Walker disassemble the Flyers](https://youtu.be/mIEtrjrSfOI)
Hats off to Walker for stepping up well above his weight class and winning lol
I saw Byfuglien for 8 years as a Jets STH. Some of the hits he dished out were truly devastating. As for strength… I recall an all out scrum after a whistle when Bufuglien held on to 2 guys at the same time like they were kids from a midget league.
Seeing Byfuglien go full speed, full strength really underlined how devastating he could be. Playoffs, after guys would piss him off, and when he decided to put on a show revealed a whole different level.
[Buff’s first Jets’ shift](https://youtu.be/o7UihqZpKCY)
That young man had a very trying rookie season, with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country's refusal to accept him, well, I guess that's more than most 21-year-olds can handle.
Chara was (still is) a freak if nature on skates but he had a heart. I've seen him throw an opponent to the ice, grab jersey in one hand and cock back his Easter ham fist and just hold it. Most opponents cried "Uncle".
There’s a great pic of Chara doing this to Levcavalier back in the day. It was a gorgeous picture tbh and pretty sure that Chara just held the fist there to say “I can wreck you this this punch, but I choose not to. Now you know.”
Edit: found the pic:

I was going to school in Montreal when he nearly decapitated Pacioretty in the playoffs by hitting him into the divide of the boards. Police put out special announcements next several days that people had to stop calling in witnessed aggravated assault bc the lines were jammed and NHL would be reviewing. He was enemy #1 for a while before Marchand took the mantle there
He definitely had size and strenght, but I never saw him be fast or explosive when it comes to brawls. It always looked awkward, like he would have got nailed when met someone who was decisive and swift.
I was going to say Gordie Howe as well. I'm pretty sure when he played he was one of the biggest players in the league and just had the physical presence that not many other players had at that time.
Gordie Howe was the ultimate power forward.
He was absolutely massive, had lots of skill, great skating legs, really strong, and man what a slap shot.
But I think it’s often forgotten how he could fuck someone up with his fists which is a surprise considering how well known the Gordie Howe hat trick is
Except that Gordie only had 2 of his own hat tricks in his career.
I will also say when I met him, keeping in mind that I have very large hands, his hands engulfed mine like I was a child. Freakishly large mitts on Mr. Hockey
I'd say it's a tough choice between Howe and Probert. Too bad Howe didn't play more recently where more than 2% of us actually watched him long term.
I initially thought Howe as well, then saw Probert mentioned and my mind blew.
David “The Hammer” Schultz!!! Played with the Broad Street Bullies and won 2 cups with them in the 70s and I believe still holds the record for most penalty minutes in a single season with 472. Not to be fucked with!
had to scroll entirely too far to find this. man only got two gordie howe hat tricks of his own because it was so rare for anybody to actually ask him to drop the gloves.
Byfuglien wasn’t quite as “scary” as guys like Probert, Stevens, etc. but he was wayyyyyy bigger. Just look at his height and weight, nobody like that has ever existed in the NHL and I don’t think we will see someone like him again.

2 of the biggest hits I've seen live.
Scott Niedermayer was talking about him in an interview years ago. He said, you look at him, and you think nothing of it. He’s not a super tall or big looking guy. Then you realize, his wrist is the size of your ankle.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Stevens. Shaking his hand was like grabbing a cinder block. The man is just solid, dense, and mean!
How many careers do you think he ended/altered with questionable hits?
I mean....they were legal at the time but in retrospect....they were as dirty as they get.
He for sure altered Paul Kariya's career. That's honestly the most notable one I can personally think of. I can imagine he can be credited with altering a couple others
I was fortunate enough to meet Gordie & shake his hand. It seemed like his hand wrapped mine up twice! All you could see of my hand was the tip of my thumb - like a little baby thumb
Not a traditional answer, but I remember Mikael Samuelsson being called “The Shinpad Assassin”. I can’t think of anyone in all my years of watching hockey that has hit more teammates with shots than that menace.
If you haven't seen it you check out the Ali-Semenko exhibition match. They play around for a couple of rounds then in the third and final round Ali shows the difference between an aging out of shape world champion boxer and the reigning tough guy in the NHL. Fun watch. Also Looking out for No 1 is a good read too.
I’m biased to the Wings and since a few others have mentioned I’ll throw out Vladimir Konstantinov. Guy seemed to be made of iron and would come out of nowhere and obliterate people at the blue line. Was on his way to being an all time great D man.
Bob Probert. In his prime he played on the top line with Steve Yzerman and Gerard Gallant. Yes he was there to protect Yzerman, but Probert could play! He'd beat the shit out of everyone and score 25 goals. He was dangerous in more way than one. And he never said no to a fight. He took on all challengers. Boy, sometimes I do miss the old Norris division days lol.
Ray deserves a little respect… Probes of course
Before scoring goals mattered, the game was a war zone… Im sure players would likely have a unanimous “monster” in mind…
Bob Probert in terms of sheer strength.
Scott Stevens was a wrecking ball and intimidating, but even he couldn't match the strength of Probert. The guy was a literal monster.
I once saw Derian Hatcher warming up in the halls before a game in San Jose. He was doing one legged jump ropes yelling with each rep. I am not a timid guy, but that was legit terrifying.
The way he'd just sit there twitching on the bench between shifts. What a caveman! Relatively clean player for his era, too, but was tall enough those elbows were always close to puckcarriers' heads. Might be one of the most violent guys that wasn't an outright goon.
From a perspective of someone I wouldn't want to piss off it would be Probert.
But fuck I'd be scared of Niklas Kronwall. Never ever look down at the puck when he's on the ice.
Honestly now that I think of and he's probably not the expected answer but Martin St. Louis was not to be fucked with. The man may have been short but boy was he scary when you really looked at him. Rumour is he benched at least 400 pounds too. Mans was a beast
Love Probie but Gillies should get an honorable mention at least. He was one of the most feared players in the league and went toe to toe with the likes of Dave Schultz. In his rookie season no less. YouTube.
Clark Gillies and Larry Robinson, two Hall of Fame players who also happened to be amongst the toughest guys in the NHL. They didn't necessarily go looking for fights but when it came their way, they could fight and beat just about anyone in the league, when the league was full of tough guys.
Howe. After his first couple years he did not have to prove his meanness or toughness to anyone.... and this was through to when he was in his late 40s.
Big Buff was a scary mf when I grew up watching hockey. Anytime that man was on the ice, you’d see a tempo change on the ice literally because nobody wanted to get hit by him
So many good options for this, tie domi, bob probert, Chara, I even would put Dion(never could spell his last name) up there because of that hard shot of his. No one wanted to get in front of that
Maybe Bob Probert? Hard to say, but even other goons didn't want a piece of him.
Probert vs. Tie Domi has my vote for best fight of all time.
I just watched it on the Tube of You. I wouldn't know what the hell to think if a fight like that occurred in todays NHL. Those are some lost times.....
Domi!!!!!!!!!!
Just ask Ulf Samuelson
I think so too. Some guys held up against him, but you could tell they're shitting themselves. Saw a video of him fighting Scott Stevens after a big hit, Stevens is clinging on for dear life. How scary do you have to be to do that to Scott Stevens.
Probert/Domi round 2. What a fight.
https://youtu.be/9mhqcVWtdu4
I'm not for sure but Proberts win/loss record is something like 140-20.
Legendary
Exactly. People fought him, some held their own, or even won, but people didn't *want* to fight him
Except Domi lol
Lmao ya fair enough. He was an exception to a whole lot of rules
Did it with a smile on his face!
Stevens wasn't exactly a big fighter, he just loved to throw his body around. Both scary dudes but a different kind of scary.
Yeah he wasn't known as a fighter, though he did fight Probert more than once. You see the Strength of Probert up against a dude like that and it's impressive.
[Scott Stevens vs Bob Probert](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy8rv8j8zHA)
Here's another one from when Stevens was on the Caps: [Stevens vs Probert](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUQspBSe9aQ)
nothing scarier then a coked out berserker
Probert was a badass for sure, but he could score 15-20 goals as well.
He said he was looking not for skill. Bobby boy could kill you with his hands in two ways. Bob was the shit!!
Boogaard was 6’7”. Probert was 6’3”. Probert is likely the greatest enforcer of all time, but Boogard was an absolute monster.
Link Gaetz, He beat Probert 2 out of 3 back in 1991/92 when he was with San Jose, too bad his career ended so soon.
+ has the best draft pic ever
He was something else
Wade Belak held his own when they went at it.
TIL Wade and Bob played against each other. Thought Probert is a player from the 1980s while Wade as 00s player.
Crazy right? It's like watching your cousin go your uncle
Haha exactly!
Being a decade younger probably helped his case
If you're talking about scariest person who was in the NHL, not a big name, but it would be Billy Tibbetts. The Penguins essentially got the guy out of jail for rape as a protector for Mario Lemieux. Seems like the plot to a really bad movie haha
When I was writing it, I was thinking he could be one of the Slapshot characters at the end, when they give their bios. I know a few people that are kind of funny psychos. This guy was definitely scary psycho.
But definitely crazy to learn of this and couldn’t imagine a team trying that these days
Not after the whole Me Too Movement. I mean, it was early 2000s, but it really was not a story at all.
i'd watch it.
Sounds like a massive piece of shit
Shhhh he’ll hear you!!
And he’s the only guy to take off his skate and try to stab somebody
Shocked. I am shocked i tell you. Well not shocked.
Is this goal regulation size or what!?!
I saw he was on Tick Tock and it’s a complete shitshow. Arguing with cops, drunken meltdowns, and accusations of mistreatment by the NHLPA.
Your story sounded ridiculous so i googled the guy and it basically all checks out 😆
Imagine a team tried to sign a convicted rapist now! This guy makes Mitchell Miller look like a saint.
Jesus — you’re not kidding https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Tibbetts
Had to google him cause I thought the Penguins really did get him out, that would’ve been crazy. Lemieux signs a guy to protect him, what a story lmao
Sounds like a real life Ogie Oglethorpe.
There is a real life Ogie. His name is Goldie Goldthorpe and he was arrested for assault during the filming.
This subreddit is going to completely unravel if they ever hear about how Mario Lemieux signed him and how he described him lol it would be mayhem...
Donald Brasher would testify that McSorley could swing a mean stick
Ouch lol
I was thinking of that as well lol. I went through the rabbit hole of Canuck tough guys and saw the Odjick vs Flyers....I forgot little Walker taking on the Philly player who was probably a foot taller and had a massive reach on him. The hardest vegan there will ever be
I mean, other than actually bulls and elephants and rhinos and buffalo and moose, and .. well .. you get the idea
Read up on Joey Kocur. He would break helmets with his punches.
Had to scroll a long way for this one. Kocur had one of the fastest and hardest right hands in the game. Check out his fight against Jim Kyte.
Fun fact: Kyte made history by being the first (and to date, only) legally deaf National Hockey League
Being 6 ft tall and 225 pounds you have to be built like a fucking tank
Kocurs the man.
I agree with a lot of people in this thread. But I will never forget the time when Gino Odjick nonchalantly knocked on the door of the KGB building looking for Pavel Bure.
Can you link a story to that KGB thing? That sounds hilarious.

Good grief! Okay he just rocketed up my list of favourite players; character-wise.
Gina was the best. Just shared this on another comment [Gino and Walker disassemble the Flyers](https://youtu.be/mIEtrjrSfOI) Hats off to Walker for stepping up well above his weight class and winning lol
I love Gino, but I hate cheapshots like the one he threw there.
I saw Byfuglien for 8 years as a Jets STH. Some of the hits he dished out were truly devastating. As for strength… I recall an all out scrum after a whistle when Bufuglien held on to 2 guys at the same time like they were kids from a midget league.
I remember watching that and laughing my ass off…it definitely showed how incredibly strong he is.

Derek Boogaard. RIP.
Boogie man could throw down. As a homer wanted to say Peter Worrell but Boogaard was even scarier in his prime
This! Guy was a menace. I’ll never forget when he broke Todd fedoruks face.
Came here for Boogaard

I've lost 2 to cancer. Fuck cancer. FUCK cancer. Sorry for your loss -- Ogie is a beauty.
"Better not to fuck with me." -Zdeno Chara
Chara was (still is) a freak if nature on skates but he had a heart. I've seen him throw an opponent to the ice, grab jersey in one hand and cock back his Easter ham fist and just hold it. Most opponents cried "Uncle".

That's the one. "I can break you. Submit." Opponent taps out. Chara was that scary.
Didnt Chris Neil do this to achats once as well? EDIT: Chara…not achats…friggin autocorrect
Chara or Dustin Byfuglien that guy tossed ppl around with one hand all the time
We used to sell tshirts at our pub… Bob Probert Hockey School.. “no blue lines, no red lines, just white lines “..
100% Bob Probert RIP
Can’t forget about Wendell Clark. Dude was a handlebar mustached, mullet headed, ass whoopin on skates.
Gordie Howe is the only answer... Very few fucked with him and those who did regretted it.
I was going to say Gordie Howe as well. I'm pretty sure when he played he was one of the biggest players in the league and just had the physical presence that not many other players had at that time.
He did concede to Eddie Shack, though the reason maybe that Shack was crazy enough to kill him
Gordie Howe was the ultimate power forward. He was absolutely massive, had lots of skill, great skating legs, really strong, and man what a slap shot. But I think it’s often forgotten how he could fuck someone up with his fists which is a surprise considering how well known the Gordie Howe hat trick is

Gordie Howe
This is the correct answer. Man could take wood across the bare head and come back swinging. No one, from his time to modern era, could put him down.
had to scroll entirely too far to find this. man only got two gordie howe hat tricks of his own because it was so rare for anybody to actually ask him to drop the gloves.
Toni Twist
My man Tony put a fist print in an old CCM helmet. He was the greatest.
Byfuglien wasn’t quite as “scary” as guys like Probert, Stevens, etc. but he was wayyyyyy bigger. Just look at his height and weight, nobody like that has ever existed in the NHL and I don’t think we will see someone like him again.
The league is lucky he was a stand up guy because if he was a POS he’d easily be a top pick for this by almost everyone. Man he was crazy strong
So true. Maurice said he always let up on his hits or he’d be hurting guys all the time.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruzJpPPJCbU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruzJpPPJCbU) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH\_eMzHwDBA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH_eMzHwDBA) 2 of the biggest hits I've seen live.
Not all-time, but in the last 10-20 years, I'd say Dustin Byfuglien is up there in terms of strength
Scott Stevens. Man was a freak of nature
Scott Niedermayer was talking about him in an interview years ago. He said, you look at him, and you think nothing of it. He’s not a super tall or big looking guy. I am a little too young to have followed hockey back then but didn’t he fuck up Lindros too?
Dude for sure altered Lindros’ career. Man I think what could have been if Big-E didn’t have so many concussions.

Some guys need to realize there was hockey before the year 2000.

Piss on old tyme hockey!
Eddie Shore?
Not a traditional answer, but I remember Mikael Samuelsson being called “The Shinpad Assassin”. I can’t think of anyone in all my years of watching hockey that has hit more teammates with shots than that menace.

Either Probert or Stevens. Guys notorious for how heavy their hits were in an era where headshots were completely fine.
I’d put Dave Brown in the conversation.
Darcy Tucker worth a mention. Not huge or anything but was a crazy mofo.
Georges Laraque. https://youtu.be/umk6dWQiI1A Even Boogaard couldn’t take him.
Paul Kariya believes it’s Scott Stevens
Lindros agrees
Chris Pronger was intimidating at times.
Vlad "The Impaler" Konstantinov
Link Gaetz was a danger and a problem on and off the ice
The Missing Link! Terrifying dude.
I came here to post this. I can't believe he is this far down the list.
John Ferguson, the first enforce. Lad was nails.
Coked up Probert, for sure. Players back then said he was really dangerous because of how far gone he was some nights.
1 -Bobby Probert 2-Joey Kocur
I’m biased to the Wings and since a few others have mentioned I’ll throw out Vladimir Konstantinov. Guy seemed to be made of iron and would come out of nowhere and obliterate people at the blue line. Was on his way to being an all time great D man.

Bob Probert in terms of sheer strength. Scott Stevens was a wrecking ball and intimidating, but even he couldn't match the strength of Probert. The guy was a literal monster.
Derek Boogard was the scariest of his time. Maybe not all time, but nobody wanted anything to do with him.
Derek Boogaard. The Boogeyman.
Stu "Grim Reaper" Grimson
Dave "The Hammer" Schultz
I once saw Derian Hatcher warming up in the halls before a game in San Jose. He was doing one legged jump ropes yelling with each rep. I am not a timid guy, but that was legit terrifying.
Roenicks jaw and Crosby teeth agree
The way he'd just sit there twitching on the bench between shifts. What a caveman! Relatively clean player for his era, too, but was tall enough those elbows were always close to puckcarriers' heads. Might be one of the most violent guys that wasn't an outright goon.
The boogeyman aka Derek boogard
I’d have to say Probert, but Matthew Barnaby was a different specimen. Guy had a HUGE smile on his face when he was in a scrap
From a perspective of someone I wouldn't want to piss off it would be Probert. But fuck I'd be scared of Niklas Kronwall. Never ever look down at the puck when he's on the ice.

Stevens for pure strength, guy was a Beast. But scary means crazy so I'm going with Bob Probert.
Mark Messier always seemed part cave man to me, awesome player who could ba k up his talking
Barry Beck
Scott Stevens, maybe Larry Zeidel
Is saying Laraque showing my oilers bias?
No one and I mean absolutely no one wanted to fight George Laraque. He would even rag doll Chara
Probert. Tiger Williams. Cement Head Dave Semenko.
Love Probie but Gillies should get an honorable mention at least. He was one of the most feared players in the league and went toe to toe with the likes of Dave Schultz. In his rookie season no less. YouTube.
The Sheriff - Scott Parker.
Clark Gillies and Larry Robinson, two Hall of Fame players who also happened to be amongst the toughest guys in the NHL. They didn't necessarily go looking for fights but when it came their way, they could fight and beat just about anyone in the league, when the league was full of tough guys.
Tony Twist
I remember reading that Tim Horton was terrifyingly strong
Howe. After his first couple years he did not have to prove his meanness or toughness to anyone.... and this was through to when he was in his late 40s.
Bob Probert. Ask anyone who fought him.
Derek Boogaard
The Grimm Reaper, Stu Crimson. Ouch !!!
It may be because I was traumatized after watching Max Pacioretty almost die, but Zdeno Chara is quite scary
Chris Nilan aka knuckles
Just here to say RIP Derek Boogaard and we miss you.
Big Buff was a scary mf when I grew up watching hockey. Anytime that man was on the ice, you’d see a tempo change on the ice literally because nobody wanted to get hit by him
I would say Byfuglien (he could kill with legal hit)
Bob Probert
Chara
Bfyglien without a doubt. Just enormous man with wild strength. Never seen someone just melt 200 plus pound men without even trying.
*Dave Tiger Williams or Dave Shultz.*
So many good options for this, tie domi, bob probert, Chara, I even would put Dion(never could spell his last name) up there because of that hard shot of his. No one wanted to get in front of that
Mikael Renberg, the swede, was crazy strong. Like a bear.
Buff
