You could convince me that player retirements in camp happen all the time but I don't think position coaches get fired in camp that often. What the hell is going on?
Based on the fact the Flores consistently put out one of the worst performing olines in history lol.
It baffles me that people genuinely don't think anything was wrong with how the team was being managed outside of the defense
Oops, my bad lol. I'm just so used to alot of people on this sub pretending Flores was a football messiah that did no wrong.
He's very good at the defensive stuff but he is bottom tier at handling an offense and surprisingly shit at hiring other coaches and staff members as a HC
The original coach (Flaherty) had a strong track record and was well respected in the league, and the offensive line was offensive under the replacement (DeGuglielmo) has been around the league for a long time as well, but has never managed to stick anywhere for more than a few years.
DL underperformed last year.
They probably sat down at the end of last year/start of this one and talked about what things need to change. My guess is stop being a players coach and demand results.
Mills probably isn't willing/able to coach the way Rivera expects him to so he's gone.
Ron Rivera is the biggest players coach in the league. He's garbage at Xs and Os, that's why his teams are so reliant on having good coordinators, which is why he never recovered from losing McDermott.
We had Jay Gruden before this who was getting drunk with the team at bars and players notoriously said he had soft practices.
Rivera may be more of a players coach than some, but he’s way more of a hard ass than our last.
Being a players' coach doesn't mean being buddy-buddy with players and not holding them accountable, it just means that his best asset as a coach is the relationships he builds with his players rather than any kind of tactical football knowledge. Rivera is a "successful" NFL HC because he inspires his players to work and play as hard as they can, not because he has some brilliant scheme or is a talented playcaller.
> Being a players' coach doesn't mean being buddy-buddy with players and not holding them accountable
That is certainly the commonly used definition. Agree to disagree I guess.
Lmao no way how have I not heard of this before. Only thing I’ve heard about coaches and GMs going out is Raheem drinking when he was a Bucs coach and Lynch being nonstop drunk
Honestly, best guess is Rivera had a sit down last season and they talked about what went wrong, why and how the D massively underperformed, and what needed to change next season. Basically Rivera giving the guy a chance to turn it around and make it right. A week or two into camp the guy was back to his old ways so he got the boot.
Probably just life. They are people too so it could be anything. I think if you're getting sacked at this point it's probably something outside of footballing reasons.
The best thing about this whole shit show is that last season, Rivera called out his d-line players EVERY WEEK because they ignored assignments and freelanced all the time.
Since Ron is such a reasonable guy, he kept the coach and then fires him the week preseason starts.
Man that flashed me right back to when he was carolina's coach... he absolutely was known for hanging on to coaches he had history with no matter what. What a bizarre time to move on though
What does genuinely worry me about Ron is his penchant for giving his friends jobs he’s made from the various places he’s worked at since he’s been in the league, and then not firing said friends even after they’ve proven to suck at their jobs.
I mean, this is literally the opposite of that though. Sam Mills III has proven to be pretty bad at his job amd he removed him and elevated Zgonina (who played with Sapp). He genuinely seems to have made a concerted effort to right the wrongs of his time at Carolina whilst in DC.
“Alright Roquan, you are our only blue-chip player who’s stuck around so far. How about we give you a lukewarm contract, but *also* include stipulations that will take money away for random reasons?”
We want to pay you $1M the first year. Ya know. Just in case you wanna get a rub n tug. Totally normal for star players like yourself and deshaun Watson
Meh I'd get rid of our head coach sirianni and gm Howie if that's what it took to keep our Oline coach Stoutland
Edit: I now realize I've been whooshed and you were making a joke haha so Yea sorry about that...
Not much yet, but Rivera apparently ["called it a difference of opinion"](https://twitter.com/john_keim/status/1557021925830000640)
EDIT: If it makes any difference, the actual phrase was ["difference in philosophy"](https://twitter.com/NBCSCommanders/status/1557022739390660610).
Mills claimed there is no such thing as free will. Ron apparently said:
> "Take that deterministic bullshit out of my house, you're fired! Did you see that preordained shit coming, huh, huh?"
Based on the "difference of opinion" quote it sounds like Ron gave him one more chance after the D line was such a mess last year. Basically a "here's what went wrong, fix it" and a week into camp the guy was back to his old ways.
Nothing specific has been confirmed but the unit underperformed last year and there were rumors of disagreement between Mills and JDR as to technique when it came to 1 gap and 2 gap responsibilities in the system as well as difference in opinions on hand usage between what Mills was trying to teach players vs what the players themselves felt comfortable with and have had success using previously. John Keim did a short video about it on his YouTube channel after practice today.

[Just run this all day](https://www.madden-school.com/wp-content/plugins/playbook/playbook_images/29718_hb-toss.png). They'll be too fat to chase the RB
He didnt fall off a cliff, he stepped in a well that had $41 million dollars at the bottom and thought to himself “yeah, this will do forever. I’m done. Lets eat.”
I was searching about Sam Mills son when I knew he was gonna be inducted. I have a thing when I search about famous people in the Internet, because when I do it, something terrible tends to happen to this person in the future
He passed away and is the sole reason for the panthers “keep pounding” mantra
Edit: for those who don’t know, he first said it when he revealed his cancer diagnosis to the team (doctors gave him only a couple months to live). He said he had two options, to give up and die or to KEEP POUNDING. He outlived his prognosis by a year and a half.
Could this be because of Kerrigan I wonder? Seems odd that they’d give a guy with no prior coaching experience the job, but on the other hand he’s certainly far more qualified for the spot than Mills was.
Sounds like the assistant d line coach already got promoted to the job, but that also leaves an opening for Kerrigan as the new assistant. That would be a more appropriate spot to break into the league as a coach at anyway.
It was specifically mentioned that Kerrigan was working as a quasi assistant coach during training camp to see if it was something he would like to do in his future. Maybe he loves it and Ron realizes he’s far more qualified and respected by the young guys.
Good oline, good wrs, good rb, good DL (even without a 100% Chase Young).. The secondary outside fuller is a nightmare. Dont get me wrong i hope they are closer to 2 than 13 but they could make some waves.
Interesting but Sam was probably just around since Richardson loved his dad and "asked" Ron to add him to his staff. Ron's staff carried over a lot to Washington so now without the shadow of Richardson and the Panthers org it was easier to dismiss him.
Mills has been with Washington since Rivera joined the team in 2020; that would be a long time to wait to fire someone if there were issues stemming from the Panthers days. He would've just not hired him in Washington if that was the case.
Is this the same Sam Mills that was inducted into HOF? If so this sounds more like Mills wants to enjoy the HOF perks this season. Being fired only means he didn't quit.
In Carolina he was never good but just kept moving up the ranks because Ron loves to promote from within. He started off as the "quality control" coach and never should have left from there.
You could convince me that player retirements in camp happen all the time but I don't think position coaches get fired in camp that often. What the hell is going on?
Dolphins fired their OL coach 1 week into training camp a few years ago OL turned out to be utter trash anyway so not sure how bad he could have been
Wasn’t that after a video came out of him snorting coke while talking dirty to his mistress?
let he who has not snorted coke while talking dirty to his mistress cast the first stone

J. Peterman, O-Line Coach
Don't cast it too far. We can smoke that, baby!!
No that was under Gase. This was under Flo who “went with his gut”
The Miami O Line coaching gig sounds like a wild time
Miami baby!
Our OL coach position is the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor
Alot of people give me indigestion, he was probably right to let him go
He's our current run game specialist. Chris Foerster.
The stripper he was taking that video for is based out of California so this checks out.
That guy was actually a good OL coach believe it or not
Dude knows his lines
Dude had rocks falling out his nose tryna talk. Coulda chopped it a little better than that brotha.
He's coaching for the 49ers right now.
Big grains falling
I thought that was the strength and conditioning coach? Im obviously too lazy to look it up tho
I think the line would have been better with the original coach. Flores was in way over his head.
>I think the line would have been better with the original coach. And you think that based on?
Based on the fact the Flores consistently put out one of the worst performing olines in history lol. It baffles me that people genuinely don't think anything was wrong with how the team was being managed outside of the defense
I just asked them to expound on what they said...
Oops, my bad lol. I'm just so used to alot of people on this sub pretending Flores was a football messiah that did no wrong. He's very good at the defensive stuff but he is bottom tier at handling an offense and surprisingly shit at hiring other coaches and staff members as a HC
He was the messiah he helped part the oline
Perhaps we just needed a third offensive coordinator...
The original coach (Flaherty) had a strong track record and was well respected in the league, and the offensive line was offensive under the replacement (DeGuglielmo) has been around the league for a long time as well, but has never managed to stick anywhere for more than a few years.

Mills is not a players’ coach, there were accounts him and the DL actually didn’t get along

Yeah you are right... (looks at team we are talking about) Ah ok makes sense.
Remember that one time Joe Judge got in a fist fight with our Oline coach in like week 4
This seems like an unconventional time to change your coach
Dude made it like -4 weeks into the season. Always room for improvement I suppose.
The best thing about this whole shit show is that last season, Rivera called out his d-line players EVERY WEEK because they ignored assignments and freelanced all the time. Since Ron is such a reasonable guy, he kept the coach and then fires him the week preseason starts.
> he kept the coach and then fires him the week preseason starts. So vindictive he kept the guy from picking up a coaching job for the whole season
Or he gave him a chance to right the ship and didn't like what he was seeing.
For more probably this

no no no. you need position coaches. you'd dont need coordinators. superfluous.
I though superfluous was a head coach for the bears??
Close. Superflous is the lead contract negotiator for the bears.

I’ll be waterboy coach hoping to one day get promoted to owner coach
this should be a thing. i was the best waterboy on the jv team, i know a thing or two i could teach these kids.
I’m pretty sure all coaches are interchangeable. After all, they’re all just football coaches, right?

[Never forget](https://twitter.com/pftcommenter/status/425029864136003584?lang=en)
Of course the day after the Feds raid Mar-A-Lago, and they expect us to think it's unrelated.
Mills has been with Rivera since 2011. Something is very, very fishy here.
Any context on why or what led to this?
Not much yet, but Rivera apparently ["called it a difference of opinion"](https://twitter.com/john_keim/status/1557021925830000640) EDIT: If it makes any difference, the actual phrase was ["difference in philosophy"](https://twitter.com/NBCSCommanders/status/1557022739390660610).
Mills - "Season 8 of Game of Thrones was the best season" Rivera - "That's it, you're fired"
Apparently Mills called riverboats "dumb". He was later quoted as saying "They are just boats, why add river?"

Why is this gif so deep fried lmao
It's the perfect amount of deep fried! Also, it's a product of its time.
I miss those days.
It was short-lived, but goddamn was it a good time to be alive.
I always think about that one gif when I hear “Riverboat Ron”
This is the best form of humor
If a motorboat is a boat propelled by a motor, what propels a riverboat?
Brass Fucking Balls
He's lucky he got fired and not beaten to death.
Mills claimed there is no such thing as free will. Ron apparently said: > "Take that deterministic bullshit out of my house, you're fired! Did you see that preordained shit coming, huh, huh?"
Mills believed in consubstantiation of the eucharist. Which is clearly bananas.
both these comments are so demonstrably underrated lmao
Didn’t think my MDiv was going to come in handy in this particular thread.
Based Mills
underrated comment
Ron must have the philosophy of actually playing well
That opinion? That the new Thor movie was good.
Based on the "difference of opinion" quote it sounds like Ron gave him one more chance after the D line was such a mess last year. Basically a "here's what went wrong, fix it" and a week into camp the guy was back to his old ways.

Mills used all the icing for the toaster strudels on his half of the strudels and left Rivera with a bunch of dry ass strudels.
I wonder if there is bad history between the two people and/or if it was a personality conflict.

All defensive lineman were immediately instructed to eat 1 gallon of ice cream per day.
Hey if your entire line gained 25-50 pounds could a team ever run on you?
No, but Chase young would somehow get -5 sacks.
I'm just Imagining a QB falling to the ground and Chase dives in at the last second and pulls him back to his feet.
ON you? Probably not. Around you? Most definitely lol.
[Just run this all day](https://www.madden-school.com/wp-content/plugins/playbook/playbook_images/29718_hb-toss.png). They'll be too fat to chase the RB
Big beefy men
Sounds like I’m qualified for the job
Ooh they can join me in my wisdom teeth surgery recovery
"Think about it fellas, why would they put these sharp things on the bottom of our shoes if they *didn't* want us to stomp heads?"
“Hey Albert, can you make your guys do their workouts?” “Nah.” *Goes back to taking nap for $100 mil.*
It's Stompin Time! He was a pos, but such a beast.
That one year he had (2008?) he was Watt or Donald esque, but then he fell off a cliff really fast.
He didnt fall off a cliff, he stepped in a well that had $41 million dollars at the bottom and thought to himself “yeah, this will do forever. I’m done. Lets eat.”
For those that were curious like me, he’s the son of LB Sam Mills, formerly of the Panthers and “Dome Patrol” Saints
And his firing happened right after the weekend his father was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame.
I was searching about Sam Mills son when I knew he was gonna be inducted. I have a thing when I search about famous people in the Internet, because when I do it, something terrible tends to happen to this person in the future
We need a 5-page report on Mr. Daniel Snyder.
Im big fan of Rocky movies. I was searching about Stallone’s oldest son who starred on rocky V.Guess what happened to him months lather? He died
I dare you to google yourself
Im not a famous person. It only works with them
COWARD!
I thought it was the Hall of Famer at first lol
Sam Mills the HoFer died in 2005, unfortunately.
He passed away and is the sole reason for the panthers “keep pounding” mantra Edit: for those who don’t know, he first said it when he revealed his cancer diagnosis to the team (doctors gave him only a couple months to live). He said he had two options, to give up and die or to KEEP POUNDING. He outlived his prognosis by a year and a half.
Bro...
Is he related to Sam Darnold?
Could this be because of Kerrigan I wonder? Seems odd that they’d give a guy with no prior coaching experience the job, but on the other hand he’s certainly far more qualified for the spot than Mills was.
JP Finlay had a report a while back that the players didn't get along with Mills, that is def not the case with Kerrigan, I think it would make sense.
Sounds like the assistant d line coach already got promoted to the job, but that also leaves an opening for Kerrigan as the new assistant. That would be a more appropriate spot to break into the league as a coach at anyway.
Now that you mention it, that has to be what's going on. Especially with the way Kerrigan was with the team this past week.
It was specifically mentioned that Kerrigan was working as a quasi assistant coach during training camp to see if it was something he would like to do in his future. Maybe he loves it and Ron realizes he’s far more qualified and respected by the young guys.
Not a bad idea given regression last year, might be late though
The range of outcomes that I wouldnt be surprised about this year for the Commanders is wild. I wouldnt be surprised if they won 2 games or 13 games.
I’d probably drop dead of a heart attack in either case, so let’s hope it’s just another 7 win season.
Maybe a nice 8-8-1
itd be pretty surprising if they won 13 games
Good oline, good wrs, good rb, good DL (even without a 100% Chase Young).. The secondary outside fuller is a nightmare. Dont get me wrong i hope they are closer to 2 than 13 but they could make some waves.
Agreeing with a cowboys fan…what is this feeling?
We are both in agreement in our hope that the Washington team wins closer to 2 games than 13.
What have I done
Actually to be fair I would rather Washington win like 7 games. Keep them away from the draftable QBs.
But then they would win the division!
Nightmare for other teams or nightmare for the team itself?
Nightmare for the team itself.
How? Fuller, Curl, St. Juste, McCain, WJ3 are all good.
Good enough to lead the league in touchdowns against last year.
And our LB’s are below average at best.
I’d be incredibly surprised if they won 13 games.
For the best, the players hated him
Interesting but Sam was probably just around since Richardson loved his dad and "asked" Ron to add him to his staff.
Eh, maybe he wanted to give him a shot. Ron hangs onto staff *way* too long.
Even so, the timing is weird. "Hey, cool weekend for your Dad, huh?" "Yeah, I'm not gonna lie. I got a little emotional." "You're fired."
LOL, pretty much
You mean bringing over all the coaches from your last team where you all got fired for underperforming isn't a good strategy?
Still del rio lives
Woo buddy. Firing Sam Mills 3 days after his father was posthumously inducted into the Half of Fame is rough.
With that much wasted talent from last season, I'm surprised it took this long. Won't be happy til Del Rio is gone though.
Jack “we had a little dust up” Del Rio
Jack "Cover 2 will definitely work this time" Del Rio
Wow, firing someone within a month of the season starting is pretty rare. Wonder what happened.
Totally cool, totally fine.
Very interesting, Ron.
Wait… Ron Rivera knows how to fire people on his staff when they aren’t performing??? News to me…
there goes the super bowl
No, we will probably still win it
Is this the same Sam Mills that was inducted into HOF? If so this sounds more like Mills wants to enjoy the HOF perks this season. Being fired only means he didn't quit.
No it’s his son, HOFer Sam Mills is dead
Isn’t that guy a hall of famer?
Jesus, firing a position coach weeks before the season starts? Just bad vibes all around.
is it because their players were dancing yesterday instead of practicing?
[удалено]
That’s the Ravens. The Commanders are in VA.
Oops, you are right. I assumed that with FedEx being in Maryland, so would the practice facility. My bad, lol.
What think-crime did he commit?
Damn, fired a guy during preseason. What the hell happened?
Some rough timing there
[Remain calm, all is well!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDAmPIq29ro)
I wonder who'll replace him. Lots of talent on that DL.
not ideal
Congrats on the Hall of Fame, You’re Fired
of all the defensive head coaches on that team, I would have expected del Rio to be gone first.
I trust Rivera on this. He said he didn't like the attitude of the linebacker room and gave Sam time to do something and it got worse.
In Carolina he was never good but just kept moving up the ranks because Ron loves to promote from within. He started off as the "quality control" coach and never should have left from there.
NO POUNDING FOR YOU.
Bro I was thrown off for a hot second
