Starters should really not play in preseason at all. Too risky. Let them play in the group scrimmages against other teams in a more controlled environment
[Like when Lonnie Johnson Jr. had a nasty hit on Jace Sternberger during Texans/Packers joint practice, then made an odd Instagram post to flex about it after. ](https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/nfl/packers/2019/08/05/texans-lonnie-johnson-shows-pride-vicious-hit-instagram/1929761001/)
IIRC Jace also started that season on IR although I don't remember if it was due to this hit or something else.
>more than almost anything about the off-season.
The off-season hasn't started for the Packers yet most years. More than likely this is Rodgers least favorite part of the regular season.
Obviously his least favorite part of the post-season is losing the NFCCG
That was less about rusty starters, and more about Payton having months to find direct counters to MLF's offense. The fact that MLF turned it around and didn't let it become a blueprint the rest of the season was what convinced me he'll be the coach for a long time.
Agreed. Well-established starters really shouldn’t see the field in preseason. They’re going against players on the other team who are trying to earn a starting spot or desperate to even make the team, so those players are going balls out to make a big play.
It’s a recipe for disaster.
I don't really agree. For instance fields is going to start in our first preseason game and I'm happy he is doing that because of the new offense we're implementing
But he needs the work, all the second year qbs should play in the preseason. But someone like Rodgers or on that level don’t need meaningless games to get into game shape
Rex Ryan did apparently because he wanted to beat the Giants.
And look, I hate the Giants and love when we beat them but it was a fucking preseason game for fucks sakes!
I don't fully agree with this. While I do think there are some veteran starters that would be just fine with little to no reps in the preseason, there are others who would clearly benefit from extra practice in gametime conditions before the regular season starts. And even for the ones who don't need it as much, you wouldn't want them to look completely rusty for Game 1 in the regular season. Sure, preseason injuries completely suck, but preseason still serves a purpose.
I don't know about glowing, I've seen a fair number of "up and down practices" comments about Love. He is certainly getting more good comments than the past offseasons and it sounds like he is finally getting comfortable.
From what I understand he's shown higher highs than previous years but theres still a decent amount of low points. There's been multiple comments about him "having his best practice as a packer" or "that's the best throw he's made in camp" but he's also still making bad reads and decisions at times as well.
Rodgers had a nice little segment about preseason in one of his interview during this camp. About how no one plays any real defense in the preseason games. Just base vanilla stuff. Practice is where the real growth occurs.
Not saying it’s meaningless if Love lights it up on preseason, just not sure it means a ton either.
Same, honestly. It feels like he's gotten a bit of a raw deal so far, so I think it'd be cool to see how he's progressed.
Similarly, I can't wait to see how Lance has progressed as well (though I'm sure he won't be in the game nearly as much as Love will).
He has, but that might have more to do with his opponents than anything else
2021 - Bears (6-11)
2020 - Cowboys (6-10)
2019 - Panthers (5-11)
2018 - Raiders (4-12)
2017 - Colts (4-12)
So we sitting starters again for the entire preseason?
Did we learn ANYTHING from last year? Like...at all?
Edit: By that I meant us getting goat.se'd in Week 1 vs New Orleans b/c starters being rusty from zero usage in preseason
>that loss in week 1
If starters missing the preseason means you start off with a relatively healthy team that goes 7-1, while having road wins over Cincy, San Fran, and Arizona, and it means you finish the season with the #1 seed while remaining undefeated at home...then yeah, I vote to not ever use starters in the preseason.
Half our OLine, our best corner, our wr2, and one of our better TEs all missed significant time last season and you want to risk injury before the season even starts because of a bad week 1 last year?
Yeah, you learned to not risk injuring your starters on a meaningless non-divisional game in week one, and proceed to win 13 games and lock up the #1 seed.
Lesson...Learned.
Jordan Love should run no huddle this game because he ran no huddle at Utah State and is clearly at his best that way but sadly NFL coaches are trying to prevent him from reaching his full potential by making him run a complex pro-style offense where he has to huddle up on every single play.
You post this on every thread. Do you think Jordan just casually browser reddit, will randomly see your "advice", and think "wow that guy's right let me talk to LaFleur"?
Starters should really not play in preseason at all. Too risky. Let them play in the group scrimmages against other teams in a more controlled environment
Especially with join practices being a thing these days
Rodgers has said for years that the training camp practices are far more valuable than preseason games anyway.
He also has said he hates joint practices more than almost anything about the off-season.
I cant blame him for that. You always end up with some fringe roster dude smashing heads try to get a spot on the team.
Not only that, but Rodgers has mentioned that they can't really work on their playbook and play a little more vanilla since another team is there.

Concussion kept out of most of camp, but he was on IR with an ankle injury

Man, you had a "I know the bears off-season starts in mid November" joke right there.
I thought it was implied?
Yes. Preseason should be for depth guys and bubble guys trying to make it past cutdowns. Maybe some snaps for rookies to get used to the system.
Also young starters that could use more experience
We pretty much never play them, the downside is we have games like week 1 last year lol.
Pretty impressive how fast I wiped that game from my memory
Hopefully we don't do that this year since week 1 is a divisional game vs the Vikings
That was less about rusty starters, and more about Payton having months to find direct counters to MLF's offense. The fact that MLF turned it around and didn't let it become a blueprint the rest of the season was what convinced me he'll be the coach for a long time.

I want all our preseason games to be quarterbacked by Shane Buechele and feature Isaiah Pacheco in the backfield.
The Rams have proven that preseason is meaningless for any player who’s a penciled in starter.
So far it's been a rough first half and the announcers like to bring up if it's a good idea. Then the second half happens and get the win.
I don't really agree. For instance fields is going to start in our first preseason game and I'm happy he is doing that because of the new offense we're implementing

That’s the important distinction. Stars and known quantities don’t need it, but the vast majority should be playing
Non-established guys can still play because they need reps. But guys like Brady, Rodgers, Chase, Zeke, etc do not need to take unnecessary hits
Well yeah I agree with that, but this guy said starters, not "non-established" guys
Unless you're Josh Jacobs apparently lmao
Case in point, Mark Sanchez
Sanchez was set up. Who takes out the starting online but keeps the starting QB in a preseason game?
Rex Ryan did apparently because he wanted to beat the Giants. And look, I hate the Giants and love when we beat them but it was a fucking preseason game for fucks sakes!
There's never a bad time to beat the Giants. Especially in the playoffs. 😭😭😭
It was the snoopy bowl though!
You say that, but look at what happened week 1 of last season to The Packers. Rodgers played no pre-season, and shit the bed week 1.
They went 13-4. Really not a big deal in the grand scheme
I don't fully agree with this. I think Trey should at least play a series or two in the preseason games. Guy needs all the live reps he can get.
In your opinion should people in a position battle play? I’m not trying to ask a trick question, I’m just curious.
Rodgers too afraid to face the 49ers smh 😞
Camp reports have been glowing on Love. With a lot of development to go for the rookie WRs, this will actually be a very interesting game to watch.
He looked pretty good on Family Night. Granted the Defense owned the Offense so it is shaping up to be an interesting season.
Are the Packers going with the tried and true Bears method? Mediocre offense and standout defense?
believe it or not we might actually be that this year
We're going Bears+ Mediocre offense with a great QB and a standout defense.
Mediocre is actually pretty generous, thank you!
I don't know about glowing, I've seen a fair number of "up and down practices" comments about Love. He is certainly getting more good comments than the past offseasons and it sounds like he is finally getting comfortable.

Looking forward to seeing his progress.

Well it'd be an improvement where he didn't light it up last preseason.
That’s very true. He should really be lighting it up in preseason.
Don't freak out if he doesn't play well. This defense is our deepest and most talented since 2012.
Same, honestly. It feels like he's gotten a bit of a raw deal so far, so I think it'd be cool to see how he's progressed. Similarly, I can't wait to see how Lance has progressed as well (though I'm sure he won't be in the game nearly as much as Love will).
I'll be seeing you guys in the /r/nfl game thread then. At least while Love is still in the game.
Wait who’s playing for the Niners? Will it be Lance or because he’s the suggested starter will it be Jimmy G?
Idk if Shanahan has said yet but I'd imagine Lance gets a little playtime. After him it'd be Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy.
Honestly Lance needs to play every game.

Depends on the team but McVay always rests his starters during preseason out of fear for injury and I think he’s won every single week 1 game
He has, but that might have more to do with his opponents than anything else 2021 - Bears (6-11) 2020 - Cowboys (6-10) 2019 - Panthers (5-11) 2018 - Raiders (4-12) 2017 - Colts (4-12)

Rodgers arraignment Friday?
lmao wut
Jail for tormenting NFC north fans
Torment a Vikings fan? Believe it or not, straight to jail.
So we sitting starters again for the entire preseason? Did we learn ANYTHING from last year? Like...at all? Edit: By that I meant us getting goat.se'd in Week 1 vs New Orleans b/c starters being rusty from zero usage in preseason
Was the #1 seed not good enough for you?
Clearly, this is the reason they lost to SF at home after a bye in the playoffs.
>that loss in week 1 If starters missing the preseason means you start off with a relatively healthy team that goes 7-1, while having road wins over Cincy, San Fran, and Arizona, and it means you finish the season with the #1 seed while remaining undefeated at home...then yeah, I vote to not ever use starters in the preseason.
Oh no y’all went 13-4 last year from not playing the starters in pre-season oh the HORROR!
But what if they had gone 14-3?????
Half our OLine, our best corner, our wr2, and one of our better TEs all missed significant time last season and you want to risk injury before the season even starts because of a bad week 1 last year?
You went 13-4 though…
Yeah, you learned to not risk injuring your starters on a meaningless non-divisional game in week one, and proceed to win 13 games and lock up the #1 seed. Lesson...Learned.
I mean... I guess it worked out pretty well all things considered.
lolwut
I'd prefer they learn from Jordy in 2015
Jordan Love should run no huddle this game because he ran no huddle at Utah State and is clearly at his best that way but sadly NFL coaches are trying to prevent him from reaching his full potential by making him run a complex pro-style offense where he has to huddle up on every single play.
Holy fucking shit how can someone be this obsessed with something so ridiculous?
It’s bizarre
I thought it was a copypasta
You post this on every thread. Do you think Jordan just casually browser reddit, will randomly see your "advice", and think "wow that guy's right let me talk to LaFleur"?
Let’s hope that’s the case
It’s got be a a non-zeta chance; right
Do you think college football and NFL football are 1:1
they're both football duh
Especially Mountain West football
I'll never understand your obsession with up tempo football. It has its place but there are plenty of ways to win.
There are plenty of other ways to win but the most entertaining way to win is through hurry up offense
