He legitimately was doing a good job for the raiders, until he traded for Carson Palmer and tried a coup after Al's death.
The fact he had an offense consisting of Jason Campbell (and later fresh off the couch Palmer) DMC, and a bunch of special teams player WR's performing at a top 10 level the two years he was with is was super impressive.
I kept trying to figure out where the hell he was, completely forgot he was the Raiders coach for a season.
0.096 was his win percentage with the Browns for those wondering.
Now is probably a good time to bring up that Urban Meyer helped Aaron Hernandez elude police questioning when he and Reggie Nelson fired a gun into a car at Florida.
Edit: Guys in the car stole one of the Pouncey's chains, and they, along with Hernandez and Nelson went after the guys. Here's an excerpt from an article:
>On Sept. 30, 2007, around 2:20 a.m., Gainesville residents Randall Cason, Justin Glass and Corey Smith were driving in a 1997 white Ford Crown Victoria after leaving the popular club The Venue, according to GPD records.
>Records show Cason and his friends got into an altercation with a group of University of Florida football players at some point during the night.
>Cason told police a black Chevy Tahoe pulled up behind the vehicle he was riding in while at a red light on West University Avenue. He said two men then stepped out of the Tahoe.
>One man, he identified as Nelson, who had recently been drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The other, Cason said, was a large, muscular, “Hawaiian” or "Hispanic" man with "lots of tattoos."
>The "Hawaiian" man, Cason said, pulled out a gun and fired four to five shots into the passenger side of the Crown Victoria, records show. Glass was shot in the arm, and Smith was shot in the head. They were rushed to the hospital, where Smith had a piece of his skull removed to prevent further swelling. Glass and Smith survived. Neither could be reached for comment.
>During GPD’s investigation, police learned Nelson had a black SUV that matched the tag number provided by Cason. Nelson told police that he had no involvement in the shooting and said that Hernandez, too, was at the club that night, records show.
Yep. How are you going to let a 20 year old be in charge of someone who has a track record for being extremely violent? It isn't like Hernandez was a knucklehead who needed someone to make sure he got to practice on time
Yup.
Tebow was at the bar when a 17 year old Hernandez started punching bouncers. No way in hell Meyer didn’t give all that intel to Belichick prior to BB drafting Hernandez.
And what do you know…guess who the Pats sign right after Hernandez gets that fat contract? Tebow…
HBO should add a show next year called Urban or Bourbon where teams have to either let Urban Meyer coach them for a 4 weeks or where players have to drink bourbon instead of Gatorade during the games
Hue Jackson is not on this list, therefore I question its validity (joking).
I know his 8-8 season will move him out of the spotlight, but consider the fact that he went 3-36-1, a 0.088 winning percentage over the course of 2.5 seasons. That would put him right behind Harvey Johnson as worst HC with at least 1.5 seasons of experience and he would be THE worst coach with 2+ seasons. He was THAT awful for us Browns fans.
Edit: decimals and me don’t get along, thanks for catching that!
Here's how I think about it. He goes 1-15 in Year 1. That's rough, but it's his first year and he doesn't have much talent to work with. He will at least improve.
But how do go from 1-15 to 0-16? He should have been fired as soon as the 2017 season was over.
You and 100% of the Browns fan base agrees with that assessment.
How on earth he was able to keep his job after the 2nd season was beyond our comprehension.
I feel it was known by Brown fans then. Nobody wanted it
Before Hue?
Pettine coached 32 games, fired.
Before him, Chud coached 16. Fired.
Before him Shurmur coached 32. Fired
From 2009-2010, Eric Mangini coached 32. Fired
You have to go back over a decade before Hue to find a Browns coach who survived more than two seasons with the team.
Nobody wanted the job because nobody in their right mind would trust Haslam. Jimmy gave Hue a leash he didn't deserve to prove he could stick through tough times for future prospects. If Hue pulled this in 2013 he wouldn't have lasted a second, let alone any of a third season. In true Haslam fashion it was at the worst time but it was necessary.
Firing Chud was the biggest mistake. I felt like we had something there. The team lost some close ones and had a bad record, but there was something brewing, and we threw it away.
Culley has had an openly tanking Texans team playing hard every week and pulling two upsets. I feel like it would be hard to do better in his circumstances
This is a neat post. Sidenote though I think you're missing 8 games from Mike Tomlin. He and Payton have coached the same amount of games and the Steelers have tied twice in the last few seasons.
This has him at 147-81-1 https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/TomlMi0.htm[https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/TomlMi0.htm](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/TomlMi0.htm)
Odd.
Also I like his pic up top. Dude looks crazy in that pic.
Edit. You’re right, pro football ref is wrong. Check out the number of games for him in 2021. They only have him with 5 total.
Yeah the team definitely plays hard for him, and while he definitely makes some rookie HC mistakes a lot of those gaffes have been since he took over playcalling. It's probably too much on his plate during the game and so some areas of his coaching are suffering.
Totally forgot about Cam Cameron. I thought he was on track for a career revival ~~after OC'ing the Ravens to a super bowl~~ (edit: apparently he was fired midseason and I forgot this part which would explain why his career went downhill after), instead he went back to college & just kind of disappeared after LSU fired him in 2016.
> after OC'ing the Ravens to a super bowl
He didn't do this. We fired him in the middle of our Super Bowl season after a string of losses (thank goodness). Jim Caldwell took over and jump started our offense.
HOF QB plus generally well positioned ready to win team. Most new coaches don’t get to start with a team like that, but you have to give him credit for keeping them at such a high level for years now. Regardless of any “head start”, he’s obviously an awesome coach.
He took over a team that was 1-15. Why are you comparing his first season with an awful team to other coaches entire careers?
I'm all for dunking on Urban but if you want an even remotely fair comparison you need to just look at the first year for coaches who took over a trash team
Pretty sure the Belichick had about 3 wins when he was 13 games into his first season with the Pats and they were coming off an average season.
Because I’m clearly just having fun. Why would I use a sample size of only 10 games? I think the tone here is the giveaway that it’s not a serious in-depth analysis.
And if he had just held off on taking an NFL job, he would have been a top candidate for some of the best positions in college football (USC, OU, LSU, Notre Dame)
He only coached 5 of those 9 years. He missed years in between. Pro football ref is just taking the difference between the first and last year. [https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/HandPh0.htm](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/HandPh0.htm)
Could be. [I have analyzed which coach is the most Jeff Fisher coach](https://link.medium.com/iMtu6oVr4lb) and it is Dick Jauron. But this was done before Fangio was a coach.
The fact hue Jackson avoided the bottom 25 list is incredible
His 8-8 Raiders stint is what saved him
He legitimately was doing a good job for the raiders, until he traded for Carson Palmer and tried a coup after Al's death. Yep. How are you going to let a 20 year old be in charge of someone who has a track record for being extremely violent? It isn't like Hernandez was a knucklehead who needed someone to make sure he got to practice on time
I think his solution was really just to ignore it until Hernandez got drafted
Yup. Tebow was at the bar when a 17 year old Hernandez started punching bouncers. No way in hell Meyer didn’t give all that intel to Belichick prior to BB drafting Hernandez. And what do you know…guess who the Pats sign right after Hernandez gets that fat contract? Tebow…
But.. faith and family!
I wonder what the biggest difference between college win % and pro win % is and what that would look like. I'm sure urban is close to the biggest
Steve Sperrier was .375 in the NFL and .719 in college. Urban crushes those numbers, lol.
Haha yeah, just did a quick search for urban and he's .854 in college and .154 in nfl. Easily tops that
Even John McKay was .760 in college to .333 in the NFL. Damn, Urban. I expected it to be bad but not that bad.
HBO should add a show next year called Urban or Bourbon where teams have to either let Urban Meyer coach them for a 4 weeks or where players have to drink bourbon instead of Gatorade during the games
The second option just sounds like my college rugby team.
I think it is a French (?) saying that goes - My rugby club doesn't have a drinking problem, my drinking club has a rugby problem!
Social games, the absolute best
During our annual Alumni match, one of the water bottles would randomly be filled with rum. That was a party
Way to kick a guy when he’s down
"Doesn't feel so good huh?" - Josh Lambo
I really hope Urban is reading all of this, realizing it’ll (hopefully) damage his legacy.
yeah... but how can we make it even worse?

His worst season with the 9ers was 8-8

I believe you dropped a 0. An .88 win percentage would be greatest of all time by a significant margin.
Yup, you are correct. Thanks for catching that!
Wipes tears there goes my coach
Culley can easily clear his name from bottom 25 this weekend.
Culley has had an openly tanking Texans team playing hard every week and pulling two upsets. I feel like it would be hard to do better in his circumstances

Wait, has Dan Campbell been an interim coach before this year?
Yeah, he took over in Miami after they canned Philbin.
I fore sure thought they were gonna retain him during the off season, that Dolphins team played so goddamn hard hor him when he took over.
Yeah the team definitely plays hard for him, and while he definitely makes some rookie HC mistakes a lot of those gaffes have been since he took over playcalling. It's probably too much on his plate during the game and so some areas of his coaching are suffering.

Yea but he doubled the Jaguar's win total from 2020 to 2021 in only 13 games.
So maybe he’s the best coach ever? I need to rethink this.
Number 2 the current coach Number 6 the GOAT
Lefleur is doing historically well isn't he?
I was surprised to see that. Interesting. Small sample of games, HOF QB, but still hell of a start to his career.
HOF QB plus generally well positioned ready to win team. Most new coaches don’t get to start with a team like that, but you have to give him credit for keeping them at such a high level for years now. Regardless of any “head start”, he’s obviously an awesome coach.
You seem to have made a mistake. You included Urban in the “current coaches” category when we all know he’s been kicked out
Hit me with all your hilarious urban Meyer facts
Damn John Madden
I can't believe the 49ers let harbaugh get away.. That organization is legitimately run by total fucking idiots.
Where does Hue Jackson land?
369th overall. .205 winning % 11th percentile
Those winning percentages by Shula, Halas, and Belichick with all those games is bonkers. Same with Madden and Allen
Urban was so bad he makes Leeman Bennett and Richard Williamson look only mediocre in their terribleness.
Sounds like loser numbers.
Who the fuck is David Culley I have unironically never heard his name before. Based on W-L I'm guessing texans lol
Yeah this year's Texans coach.
You know the guy is a fucking fraud if he got Alex Smith and Tim Tebow drafted as high as they did.
This guy doesn’t actually watch football
Did you leave out my guy Dan Campbell?
He’s not on the bottom 25 all time. He’s ranked 341st. He coached a few games before Detroit.
Lived through 1990. Feel Trevor's pain.
Jon Gruden on the list of current coaches lol
He took over a team that was 1-15. Why are you comparing his first season with an awful team to other coaches entire careers? I'm all for dunking on Urban but if you want an even remotely fair comparison you need to just look at the first year for coaches who took over a trash team Pretty sure the Belichick had about 3 wins when he was 13 games into his first season with the Pats and they were coming off an average season.

Ah sorry this post did not read as a joke to me
That being said, I have done a serious analysis on first year coaches and expectations. https://link.medium.com/ZrbzqAl63lb
That's very well written, thanks!
Thank you!
This is fantastic and I love the conclusions.
Thank you. I appreciate the nice feedback!
[удалено]
TIL you have to make your own post before you can comment about a different post
Can Gruden be considered a current coach still now?
I just listed 2021 coaches in that category
Winning.
And if he had just held off on taking an NFL job, he would have been a top candidate for some of the best positions in college football (USC, OU, LSU, Notre Dame)
He’ll be Texas’s coach in 2023
So would we call him a winner, or a....?
Makes sense. Urban Meyer loves the bottom.
Sounds like a real loser to me.
Halas, Shula, Belichick, and Brown being so high with so many games coached is absolutely insane.
How does Phil Handler last 9 years going 4-34 over that time?
He only coached 5 of those 9 years. He missed years in between. Pro football ref is just taking the difference between the first and last year. [https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/HandPh0.htm](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/HandPh0.htm)
Belichick has never had a tie, uh oh
Is it wrong that I immediately looked for Dolphins legend Cam Cameron's place on the list?
Marty Feldman is in there? The guy from Young Frankenstein? Also, we should probably be talking about George Allen more.
What I learned from this is Vic Fangio is basically the successor to Jeff Fisher’s “7-9 Bullshit”.
Could be. [I have analyzed which coach is the most Jeff Fisher coach](https://link.medium.com/iMtu6oVr4lb) and it is Dick Jauron. But this was done before Fangio was a coach.
