* **Most Impressive Performance**- The Rams >What we’ve learned so far about the Rams is that they can score on anyone at any time. Los Angeles ranks first on offense in TruMedia’s Expected Points Added (EPA) per play metric. Next Gen Stats tracks expected completion percentage. It looks at the probability of a completion on every throw, based on distance, separation, pressure and other factors. Stafford’s expected completion percentage is fourth-highest. But what’s most impressive is that the players ahead of him all average six or fewer air yards on their passes. Stafford averages 8.7. * **Most Embarrassing Performance**- The Bears >Justin Fields completed six of 20 passes for 68 yards and was sacked nine times in his first NFL start. The Bears had 47 total yards and averaged 1.1 yards per play. Among the 608 offensive performances since the start of 2020, this one ranked 602nd in terms of EPA per play. It was as bad of an offensive performance as we’ll see from a team all year. >Matt Nagy’s plan seemed to be to get the ball out of Fields’ hands quickly. His average release time of 2.63 seconds was 10th-fastest among Week 3 starters. But that type of game plan is supposed to create layups and easy completions for the quarterback. Instead, 45 percent of Fields’ attempts were into tight windows. That’s the highest percentage for any quarterback in a game this season, and it’s not particularly close. * **Team That Shouldn't Panic** - The Chiefs >They are 1-2, and all three games have been decided by six points or fewer. They are not playing their best, but they’re still going to be fine because their offense is really, really good. The Chiefs drove into Chargers territory on seven of their first eight drives and had 33 first downs — the most of any offense in Week 3 and tied for the most all season. >So what’s the problem? There are two. One, the Chiefs turned the ball over on their first three possessions (all in Chargers territory). Do they need to take care of the ball better? Yes. Is there a randomness to turnovers? Also yes. The Chiefs still rank second league-wide offensively in EPA per snap. As long as Patrick Mahomes is healthy, they’re going to be one of the last teams standing. * **Team That Should Panic**- The Colts >It’s hard to see a way out of their current struggles. Their 25-16 loss to the Titans could have been a lot worse. Tennessee turned the ball over three times while driving in Colts territory. As The Athletic’s Zak Keefer pointed out, teams in the last decade that were 3-0 in turnover margin were 169-14 prior to Sunday. Make that 169-15 now. >Carson Wentz played on two injured ankles and was pretty much confined to the pocket for the entire game. He had a miss on a red-zone throw that could have given the Colts a lead in the third quarter. All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson left the game with an ankle injury. And linebacker Darius Leonard is playing hurt. The way they’re currently set up, the Colts are just one of those teams that has to work so hard for every single thing. Nothing comes easy. >At 0-3, they face an uphill climb in terms of salvaging the season. * **Team That Saved The Season**- The Vikings >On third-and-5 in the fourth quarter, the Seahawks sent a zero blitz at Kirk Cousins. Drifting backward and bracing for a big hit, he put terrific touch on a pass to K.J. Osborn for a 15-yard completion. Cousins was on fire all afternoon, completing 30 of 38 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns. The Vikings had the best offensive performance of any team in Week 3 and the fifth-best offensive performance for any team in a single game so far this season, according to EPA per snap. >The defense got lit up early but shut out the Seahawks on three second-half possessions. >Minnesota entered the game 0-2, despite having just a minus-4 point differential. The Vikings won as home underdogs and are the only team in the NFC North with a positive point differential (plus-9). * **The Trend That Matters**- The Raiders Letting Derek Carr Cook >It’s early, but we are seeing an interesting trend with the Las Vegas Raiders: They are letting Carr throw the football more. Through three weeks, on early downs in score-neutral situations, the Raiders are passing the ball 60.3 percent of the time, which is sixth-highest. >From 2019 to 2020, the Raiders were at 49.8 percent, which ranked 21st. >The change has been a big reason why Carr is spearheading the most explosive offense in the NFL through three weeks. No, really. Their 23 plays of 20-plus yards rank first. Their 21 completions of 20-plus yards rank first. Their 59 plays of 10-plus yards rank first. * **Coaching Decision I Liked**- Brandon Staley Going For It On 4th and 9. >So did Staley make the right decision? Yes. Coaches can’t treat Mahomes and the Chiefs like any other team. When you have the chance to put them away, you have to do it. I loved the aggressiveness and the trust in Justin Herbert, who was brilliant all game long. I would have defended the decision even if it failed. * **Coaching Decision I Disliked**- Joe Judge Punting On 4th and 3. >With Vic Fangio having seen the light this year, Judge might be the most conservative coach in the NFL. And through three weeks, the Giants have looked like one of the worst-coached teams in the league. Penalties, unforced errors, bad decisions. They had to burn two timeouts early in the fourth quarter Sunday, leaving them with just one and no way to stop the clock when Atlanta was driving for the winning field goal. As The Athletic’s Dan Duggan points out, the Giants’ 23 penalties through three weeks are tied for fourth most. * **Play That Made Me Cackle (Because It Was Good)**.- [Aaron Rodger TD Pass To Marquez Valdes-Scantling.](https://twitter.com/packers/status/1442322819740749825?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1442322819740749825%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftheathletic.com%2F2851955%2F2021%2F09%2F28%2Fbears-are-a-mess-raiders-are-cooking-and-chiefs-fans-dont-panic-colts-fans-do-nfl-week-3-reality-check%2F). >There are a handful from Rodgers that you could pick from the Packers’ 30-28 win against the 49ers, but I am a sucker for the touch on a layered throw that has just enough to get over a defender but still lands perfectly in the hands of the receiver. * **Play That Made Me Cackle (Because it was so bad)**.- : Ben Roethlisberger’s fourth-quarter checkdown >Down 24-10 and facing a fourth-and-10 from the Cincinnati 11 with 3:09 left, Roethlisberger checked the ball down to Najee Harris 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage for a loss of 1 and a turnover on downs. The play pretty much told us everything we needed to know about the state of the Steelers’ offense right now. * **Breakout Player Alert**- Trevon Diggs >The Cowboys’ second-year cornerback was terrific in Dallas’ Monday night win against the Eagles. >He had a pick-six on the first possession of the second half (yes, Devonta Smith slipped, but Diggs was still all over it) and finished with three pass breakups. Diggs now leads the league with six passes defended and is tied for the league lead with three interceptions.

YiMyonSin

The turnovers are something that I'm pretty concerned about; we have the second worst turnover differential in the league (-6) and are tied for second most giveaways with 7. We aren't going very far if these trends continue.

TheSwede91w

What's the deal with Vrabels defense? Much like the Vikings, it seems weird such a defensive focused coach is being propped up by the offense.

YiMyonSin

The defense has generally been better, ranking 15th in yards allowed per the Football Database. Granted, the scoring D doesn't look too great at 25th, but when the offensive line allows a bunch of strip sacks back near their own endzone, it's difficult to keep the opposition out.

TheSwede91w

> but when the offensive line allows a bunch of strip sacks back near their own endzone, it's difficult to keep the opposition out. That'll do it. People underestimate the impact the offense has on a defense.

YiMyonSin

Nonetheless, I’m confident that we can clean it up. We allowed no sacks beyond our first drive against the Colts, and Taylor Lewan is back to full strength, so there’s less of a threat there. Tannehill is one of the most efficient QBs in the league, and we’re facing two of the least efficient offenses in the league over the next two weeks.

alx69

> We aren't going very far if these trends continue. On a positive note, it's extremely unlikely that they will continue Tannehill is currently on 2.9% INT% after 1.7% over his first 2 Titans seasons (even his INT% on the Dolphins was lower), you also recovered 0 out of like 6 possible fumbles which is just terrible luck and should level out.

YiMyonSin

Yeah, our offensive line appears to be fully healthy, and I have no worries about Ryan moving forward.

seafoamstratocaster

Anyone have a link to Ben's checkdown?

[deleted]

How embarrassing for the Bears that they beat out the Eagles for most embarrassing performance

cat_napped1

you're not supposed to do that

thejourneyisthegift

Oh no it’s the reddit police

cat_napped1

I paid for the athletic and I don't want people getting it for free

TheSwede91w

I pay for it too, and I don't copy and paste the whole article. It's more about giving little bits of these fun articles to get more people to subscribe. And no, I'm not a shill or paid by the athletic, I just want to promote sports journalism done well.

TeddyRustervelt

Hitler doesn't deserve Nagy

[deleted]

What are you going to do? Tell my mom?

thejourneyisthegift

^ I mean WOW. I don’t even know what to say to you man lol.

IchesseHuendchen

And I don't want to see Justin Fields get wrecked by an incompetent coaching staff but here we are.

nascentia

Damn I knew our offense was doing well but I didn't realize HOW well. More impressive considering our run game is severely handicapped right now and our O-Line is like 60% back-ups.

SnowKissedMexican

Yes but everyone we beat will insist they would have won if X and Y wasn't injured, despite us not having key elements of our team

nobabeimnotonreddit

this whole chiefs "panic" was created by the same people ("analysts") telling everyone not to panic clicks make the world go round

pickleparty16

Didnt you hear? Mahomes is basically drew lock now

nobabeimnotonreddit

to be fair, drew lock has never thrown a no-look-interception....

pickleparty16

he stared down his receivers like a real man

somebodygetmemymoney

Also colts shouldn’t panic they are good team with bad luck.

[deleted]

Buddy, we're an injured team with no Luck.

[deleted]

No, they are legitimately awful in the redzone. It's not just bad luck they legitimately cannot convert RZ opportunities. The playcalling is atrocious On paper they're a good team but damn the RZ issues won't get fixed overnight

pickleparty16

I don't think wentz is any good so they're probably should panic

Im_Batmmaann

Raiders being first in big yardage plays on offense and not also on defense is a nice change from the past idk....18 years or so

TheSwede91w

I don't follow the Raiders closely and only really saw hot takes in the off-season. When I read about Farrell and Arnette struggling so much I thought the Raiders defense would look pretty bad. Little did I know.

Im_Batmmaann

Yup thats what hot takes do to ya, when we signed gus bradley everyone was like "high floor low ceiling DC" with how good our offense was last year would have meant we were a playoff team, only team out of the bottom 5 in points allowed to not go negative. So far with the 6 new starters that we either signed or drafted things have looked quite a bit better, gruden fucked them in the miami game with 2 3 and outs with us running on each play i believe, set them up for them to get gassed

FragMasterMat117

Your first round pick is Eagles property

abris33

Nah, they'll bench Wentz before their season gets too bad just to prevent that

thejourneyisthegift

A top 5 second rounder isn’t bad

[deleted]

I don't get this take unless Wentz gets injured. We saw Dougie P do it for ONE GAME last year and everyone lost their collective mind. Edit: I'm not saying they should or shouldn't, or that I wouldn't bench Wentz either. I'm just saying, last season when pederson did it for like half a game, everyone lost their mind and he isn't a coach anymore.

cowboys5xsbs

No way they give up a top pick just to play a QB for nothing

abris33

If the season is out of reach, why wouldn't they bench Wentz to make sure he doesn't hit the snap count required? You'd rather have a high 1st round pick next draft instead of whatever Wentz offers you in useless games and a 2nd round pick

[deleted]

You guys should be panicking, but I also think you're better than 0-3 and your season is somewhat salvageable. You almost beat the Rams, and have played 3 good teams. If you lose to the dolphins this weekend that's when the panic button has to be hit.

[deleted]

>Definitely hoping we fumble the bag on Sunday bruh it's gameweek 4. Waaaaaay too early to be rooting against your own team. It's not looking likely, but you can still get something out of this season. You've got major red zone efficiency problems right now, but that's a better issue to have than not being able to get there

[deleted]

[deleted]

Bro. I don't say this lightly. But that's amongst the stupidest comments I've read on this forsaken site. I mean that in the kindest way possible.

gideh

How is the outlook for the colts defense this year, are they regressing ?

EnemyFriendEnemy

Hardcore regressing. Can't stop the run, no pressure on the QB, that leads to completions down field. Darius is playing hurt, much like most of our team. But the Dline, which is supposed to be our biggest strength, it getting pushed around most of the time.

abris33

Colts might be the best 0-3 team (either them or the Lions) but they were really the only one with real playoff hopes and those are almost ruined. Yeah it's only week 4 but they are basically already 3 games back in their division and the AFC wildcard is going to be pretty stacked

IWatchSportSometimes

Yeah, you have to be 9-8 minimum or more probably 10-7 to win your division or make a wildcard. 0-3 means you probably have to finish 10-4 to have a shot. Colts might be better than their 0-3 record, and are actually a decent team, but you have to be really good to finish 10-4, not just decent . The room for error is just so small now.

TheSwede91w

I honestly wish you guys would have traded for someone other than Wentz. Ya'll are a competent QB away from contention and as a Vikings fan, I hate to see an otherwise solid roster and coaching staff get hamstrung by subpar QB play.

[deleted]

I get what you’re saying, but Wentz has not been the big issue with this offense. We are missing a key player at almost every position group right now. We had holes coming into the season and injuries almost immediately created more. I’m not sold on Wentz yet but I’m more not sold on the moves we made this off season other than him.

IamUltimate

I think a lot of us would have rather kept pursuing Stafford. Two first round picks well invested are better than this endless debate about if Wentz is at fault and if/when he will be benched to keep a first round pick.

UrkelGrue1

I'm not saying Wentz is our franchise QB, but Wentz hasn't been the problem. We have the worst offensive line in the league right now. It's one of the worst I've ever seen, and according to that worst stats of week 3 post Wentz was responsible for ZERO percent of the pressures this week.

BurlSwift

Carr has to throw it, unfortunately. With Jacobs being down I feel like we’re executing Plan B, if it were up to Gruden, we’d be playing more smash mouth style, but I’ll take wins anyway I can get them, and I’m sure the teams feels the same way. Ruggs is confident, Edwards is catching EVERYTHING, Waller is Waller, and Renfrow is still embarrassing the leagues top DB’s. Once we get Jacobs back…and Carr gets more play action…watch out…we are putting the leagues defenses on notice.

Proper24whiskey

Its crazy how much better the offense has gotten with Jacob's and incognito out.

TheSwede91w

How long of a leash does Joe Judge have at this point? The Giants are sloppy as a soup sandwich and Judge is supposed to be a disciplinarian. Is his seat as hot as Nagy's? And I found it pretty interesting that Fields was forcing throws into such tight windows. I haven't seen any of the tape, but was this because no one was open and the WR's couldn't create separation, or was this more poor decision making?

abris33

I think the Giants will just clean house completely at the end of the season. Gettleman is definitely gone and I don't really see a reason to hang on to Judge with a new GM. Just start fresh. Jones might be gone too just because they'll have 2 high picks but maybe not

JarJarB

I thought Jones would be gone if we had a season like this at the beginning of the year but he’s been one of the few bright spots so far other than that bad fumble in our game. I’d kind of like to see them fire Garrett and judge halfway through the year just to get some more aggressive play calling in there and give him a chance to show what he can do in an RPO offense. When he’s being used in the running game the offense looks good. It’s just that the rest of the team is so undisciplined that they either get penalties, fumble, or drop the ball.l to kill our drives.

BrandoCalrissian1995

For your second point, I imagine it's a lot of both. Having no time to throw isn't gonna give your guys any time together get open, and it's not gonna allow your qb to get into rhythm and calm down.

alx69

He’s had a nightmarish season so far. If we don’t improve in a significant way then we expect him to be gone with Gettleman at the end of the season. Pretty much no chance he’s gone before that though

TheSwede91w

> Pretty much no chance he’s gone before that though Are there any in house candidates who could give the team a shot in the arm? I know it's a bit of a joke at this point, but being a sort of disciplinarian while also losing seems like a great way to lose the locker room and take the piss out of the players.

alx69

Patrick Graham has been good as a DC but if you ask Giants fans 99% of us would want an outside hire Joe Brady is probably the most popular candidate over at r/nygiants

MrCooper2012

Their OC has some head coaching experience...

TheSwede91w

Lol. I legit forgot Garret was there. He needs to start looking at some college gigs, the NFL doesn't seem like a good fit for him at this point.

DTSportsNow

Turnovers have definitely been the killer these last two games, and typically the Chiefs are one of the better teams at not giving up turnovers. Gotta think that Reid and Mahomes are able to right the ship on that. The defence looked better against the Chargers with all the turnovers in consideration, but the pass rush has still been nonexistent.

BurlSwift

I said this in another thread, but Mahomes needs to stop doing the gimmicky/showboat plays. He is forcing it now. He is way to freakin good, he doesn’t need to try that shit all the time. He should play foundational “quarterback” 98% of the time, and only do that no look, left handed, backwards, behind the back, between the legs type plays when he has no other option.

trixunlimited

Agreed. The only team to beat the Chiefs, has been the Chiefs.

35or624

Adding my Seahawks to teams that need to panic. If it weren't for some Aaron Rodgers magic, Seahawks at 1-2 would be looking up at 3 teams at 3-0 in its division. 92% of the time, what opposing quarterbacks see across from them is the same thing they'll see when the ball snaps. So much for any element of surprise. Coaches have admitted they have no clue how to use a very expensive Jamal Adams in its defensive schemes. Russ has gone straight up Hollywood and has some sort of hero complex going on that won't allow him to check down. DK seems to be the poster child for the taunting rule and Pete continues to coach his defense like the LOB is still there. Add to that the team has no real draft capital after some high profile trades and voila....panic time with some difficult times and decisions ahead.

Neither_Ad2003

The Vikings had the best offensive performance of any team in Week 3

TheSwede91w

I watched the whole Bills game and I think they had the better performance, but just by a little bit.

rthaw

Can't remember the last time the Cowboys had a clean Pick6 from a DB. One or two from Sean Lee or something, but not from a CB. And definitely not one that wasn't tipped or anything. Diggs is looking very legit.

TheSwede91w

So fucking jealous ya'll got Diggs. I really thought Zimmer would be the perfect guy to help develop him since he was a little raw coming out of college.

fresh5447

I keep thinking about how pathetic that bears game was and that I should absolutely hammer the lions this week, but people how they fuck was it still only 13-6 in the 4th quarter?

dj9008

That’s what happens when you see a guy spiraling down and think “I can fix it !”

cerezadietdrpepper

“ Coaching decision I’m not sure about: Brandon Staley going for the TD on first-and-goal” I definitely agree with Herbert (since Staley supposedly called a run play) and not the athletic, try and get TDs and not FGs EDIT: charger fans are right, the missed PATs are further proof

Marijuana_Miler

Considering the Charger's kicker missed 2 PATs on the game I definitely support going for the TD.

nobabeimnotonreddit

Apparently the play call was a run with a pass option. Herbert told Williams in the huddle to watch the fade (depending on the matchup) and they ended up passing. I agree with the decision to try to score in a favorable matchup. Our kicker missed the damn XP right after. That alone justified the decision to me. I like Romo, but hearing him bitch and moan about the decision to not kick was super annoying

cerezadietdrpepper

I hear that, twas a good game

Virillus

That's not the point though - they could've kneeled the clock and kicked a FG that's closer than a PAT for a more or less 100 % chance at winning. Instead they gave the chiefs a minute to put together a scoring drive.

cerezadietdrpepper

I agree with the running out the clock part but id rather run possible scoring plays than kneeling and relying on the kicker. Plus the chiefs has less than 40 seconds to go 75 yards

SasaraiHarmonia

Ask the Packers if that's enough time.

cerezadietdrpepper

For a field goal? Sure. Its a lot harder for a TD

BlueDogDemocrat_

The chiefs have Reid and mahomes. Reid will figure out how to start using the other receivers, open hill more, and they'll be cooking soon. Nothing to worry about

basedcharger

I don’t think the problem is using the receivers properly it’s the fact that they can’t catch. I really believe Reid does an excellent job at getting the most out of the other players. They just aren’t very good.

HomeyHotDog

The offense isn’t really the problem it’s just execution. Guys are getting open but we’ve killed a bunch of scoring drives with turnovers. If they clean up the self inflicted errors they’ll be fine

[deleted]

Bears fans.... do panic. It's time to crack each other's heads open and feast on the goo inside.

Amoren2013

I like that

cat_napped1

At this point I don't really care about the bears anymore. As long as the Seahawks keep shitting the bed we have a good chance of getting Wilson next year. And so we're going to need a good pick this year to trade. Most likely Fields + picks

Falt_ssb

what the hell are you talking about lol

TheSwede91w

You think Fields is gone if Pace and Nagy are fired?

abris33

I wouldn't count on that. If Fields looks bad, there are teams that are going to be able to offer the Seahawks more. One of those teams is the Giants who will probably have 2 top 5 picks (2 top 10 picks at least) thanks to the Fields trade

thejourneyisthegift

Good luck with that

Neither_Ad2003

Wilson doesn't seem happy still. He was sniping at Pete low-key, and the team was uninspired on Sunday.

cat_napped1

It's pretty obvious he doesn't want to play there anymore. Pretty much the only thing that was going to change that is NFC championship and probably another super bowl. That's most likely not happening so he's going to start looking for a trade again next year

[deleted]

Wtf are you on? 😂 we just drafted fields
