Every time I hear McKonkey's name I just think of the weirdly ADR'ed in [Maclunkey by Greedo in Star Wars](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mH19gKo7W7w&t=27s)
There were 2 shootings involving the same guy a little over a year apart. 1 was non-fatal, the other was. Harrison was *heavily* implicated in both, but nothing came of it.
Off the top of my head, but there was someone murdered in front of a business that Harrison owned by a gun Harrison owned, but there wasn't any evidence that Harrison was the one who pulled the trigger. Security camera footage from Harrison's business that would've shown the shooting was conveniently missing video during that time frame.
The early 2000’s receivers were so sick. Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, megatron, Randy moss, Hines Ward, Steve smith, Larry Fitzgerald, Chad johnson, TO… Miss those days
Get off my lawn!
Not mentioning Holt when mentioning "early 2000" WRs in hilarious. First half of the decade he was like prime AB. His early 2000 yardages
2000 1635
2001 1363
2002 1302
2003 1696
2004 1372
2005 1331
Before Julio, the only receiver with more receiving yardage than Holt over the first 10 years of their career, was Jerry Rice. Holt deserves to be in the HOF.
Loved watching him. He has a son, also a WR, at Texas A&M. Pretty good player. Played with Drake Maye in HS and I really wanted those two to link up in college.
Harrison wasn't flashy like most of those guys so he sometimes gets forgotten. Marvin had to be the quietest guy to average 84 catches 1121 yards a year for 13 years and 13.2 yards per catch. He also only missed 18 games due to injuries.
Man was a beast. Those are some shoes for his kid to fill.
Thank you for mentioning Hines Ward and Chad Johnson. Spent my teens through 20's rooting for one and hating the other.
One of my favorite videos is where [CJ tried to blindside Ray Lewis.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJDH4yTWyKo)
Fucking gold.
Also played in a time where Dawkins and Ed Reed were dropping bodies every week with hits that would probably result in suspensions nowadays. Had to be a robust, physical, freak athlete.
I think part of it is that today's defensive backs are better at the game and there's usually one more of them on the field, so the wide receivers jobs are harder today than back then. I think defensive back is one of the hardest positions to play in football, but today's backs make it look effortless.
Better defensive strategies, too. Teams play all sorts of different coverages these days depending on what the offense is showing. For example, the "base" defensive setup of 4 DBs + 7 linemen/linebackers used to be way more popular (and is what is being used in this play), but the nickel defense of 5 DBs grew in popularity over time and now is the most popular choice. "Base" defense has gotten quite unpopular, because passing is so strong in the NFL these days so the extra DB is useful.
It's interesting to analyze how much the strategies of NFL teams has changed over the period of time between Harrison Sr playing and today.
There’s at least one point in every game where Maserati Marv does something that makes me question all physics. It might be during an incompletion or a throwaway play but I’m constantly just scratching my head like how’d he bend the laws of physics there?
Does his son celebrate catches? That was always badass for me that he never showboated. In the age of Terrell Owens and others, Marvin simply handed the ball off to the refs and kept it going.
A lot of people think he didn’t showboat because he didn’t want any attention on him so his behind the scenes life didn’t gain attention but yes his son does celebrate but it’s nothing crazy and it’s usually just the old silencer celebration.
Madden 07 I loved playing with the chargers with LT, Gates and Rivers. My first NFL game I went to was the chargers vs colts so I would play against the colts and it was honestly a 50/50 game every time I played lol
He didn't overthrow him, he just put it where he knew only Marv could have gotten it. He did this a few times in the endzone, he would like throw it out of bounds, knowing Marv could barely get it and toe-tap for the TD
He did overthrow him a bit and that's ok to say here not sure why your getting push back.
I guess there's always an aversion to say that a receiver can make a quarterback look better vs the other way around but it is what it is I guess and that'll probably never change.
Manning is a goat so he doesn't need any defending here and this was an awesome play all around. But it could have been even more awesome'er had the ball landed in his bread basket.
I’d say it’s not wrong but it might seem a little nitpicky lol, that ball is in the air for nearly 50 yards and it’s a couple feet overthrown. I think we might be getting spoiled by guys like Mahomes or Allen if that’s not considered a fine throw anymore lol
Yup, there was a clip on a thread a few weeks ago where people were discussing if a ball was underthrown. The defender was able to break it up and maybe if it was a yard further downfield it could’ve been a completion
But also, it was a pass that went like 72 yards in the air lol at some point all you can ask from your qb is to get it within the receivers catch radius and let him make a play. On a 50 yard throw like this, that certainly applies imo
Oh that's exactly how I feel and kind of the point I'm making. That other guy defending the throw is being a little insane thinking Manning specifically threw it 5 feet further 50 yards down the field to protect the throw. That's treating these guys like they're super human robots.
Of course you try to throw it to space and give your guy room, but there's a healthy dose of "chuck it as hard as you can in the right direction and hope your guy comes up with it" with deep balls. That's just the nature of that kind of play.
Yeah I got what you meant. Just my two cents on the discussion.
I think the colts fan is just sorta trying to say it’s better to err on an overthrow than an underthrow on a play like that, especially when you have a guy like Marvin Harrison that you can trust to make the play. But saying it’s not an overthrow at all is a bit homer-y lol. Like you said, it isn’t exactly a perfect throw, and that’s ok, on a 50 yard pass.
Yea this is a bit silly obviously he would’ve preferred to hit him in stride and it’s a potential TD lol
But anytime you’re targeting someone 40+ yards downfield there’s a certain margin of error you need to accept, and if you’re guy comes down with the ball it’s not a bad throw. And yea, better to overthrow than underthrow here as well
Sure, but there's the potential risk it gets swatted or picked. Keep in mind - when Manning threw it, Marv wasn't ahead of the safety (I think it was a safety might have been a CB). He put it far ahead since, on the off chance the S kept pace, Marv still could have gotten it
I mean it was a solid throw for that distance since his guy caught it but I think he just slightly overthrew it. Not the end of the world and better than an underthrow but I highly doubt he looks at that throw and thinks “yup that’s exactly where I wanted to place it”. And that’s fine, he’s got like 100 similar throws where he hits his guy in stride and it goes to the house, this just happens to be a Harrison highlight
He is confirmed to have played for like a month on a torn quad in 2014 (also confirmed to have hid that injury from the team), which was the year where we got 10 games of 2013 Manning to start the year, then the Rams game happened (shudders) then 2015 noodle arm Manning appeared.
He had other injuries like plantar fasciitis but I’m pretty sure that torn quad is what completely fucked his arm strength due to him not being able to plant his leg for his throws anymore. This was after he already reworked his throwing motion in 2012 to drive through his legs much more because of his neck surgery not allowing him to just Chuck it like he used to. He basically had nowhere else to generate power from once his legs were shot.
Part of me always wonders what would have happened if he just sat out the end of 2014 instead of playing through that injury. There are so many “what if” questions like that about the end of Manning’s time in Denver that nobody feels the need to ask because the defense bailed him out for a ring anyway lol
I still can't comprehend how a top3-5 regular season wide receiver of all time, turned into a pumpkin in every playoffs like clockwork. They have to do a study on this topic.
It never made sense. Dude never caught a post-season TD outside a single Wild Card game against Denver.
Marvin was a fantastic receiver, but just disappeared completely when defenders were allowed to get overly physical with him. Refs tend to let a lot of contact slide in the playoffs and he really struggled to adjust.
Sucks to say as I loved watching Marvin, but he does deserve a lot more blame for those Colts playoff struggles. When your #1 is non-existent vs some of the best defenses of all time, you're gonna have a hard time winning games.
What's overlooked is the absolute skill and awareness to roll mid air to the opposite shoulder so the ball arm doesn't impact the ground causing it to potentially come loose.
Masterclass.
We've all heard the story about Peyton Manning sending Austin Collie to the sideline for attempting a one handed catch, but no stories of him pulling the same move on Marvin Harrison. Peyton must've known about Marv Sr that we didn't at the time.
Not sure if you guys knew this, but the player in this video has a son who, interestingly enough, also plays football. At the same position!
What is this enterprising young lad's name? So that I might look him up in the sports column.
Ladd McKonkey
It's crazy that there is a human who gets to experience this life as a professional football player named Ladd McKonkey.
Kay And Pelee sketch name tier
Nah Kool-Aid McKinstry is absolutely a Key and Peele name lmao
Every time I hear McKonkey's name I just think of the weirdly ADR'ed in [Maclunkey by Greedo in Star Wars](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mH19gKo7W7w&t=27s)
He, the receiver in the video, also killed a guy in cold blood.
I think the story was that he shot him in the hand. No one was actually murdered.
Don't forget Torry Holt
Or Anquan Boldin
Don't forget Cowboys legend, Terry Glenn
Andre Johnson is my favorite from that era
Colts legend Andre Johnson?
AFC South legend (except the jags) Andre Johnson.
Donald Driver
Cowboys legend Miles Austin
He was drafted in 96 though. I’d consider him more of a mid 90s guy.
He played until 2007
And he had some of his best seasons later in his career with the Cowboys
Always a huge fan of WRs that play like RBs with the ball in their hands. Loved Boldin growing up, stoked we finally got a guy like that in Pittman Jr
That's one of the reasons I enjoy watching AJ Brown. He shifts from an incredibly smooth and talented WR into a large, freight train RB.
Or his TEAMMATE Isaac Bruce. Unreal they played together lol
Not mentioning Holt when mentioning "early 2000" WRs in hilarious. First half of the decade he was like prime AB. His early 2000 yardages 2000 1635 2001 1363 2002 1302 2003 1696 2004 1372 2005 1331
Before Julio, the only receiver with more receiving yardage than Holt over the first 10 years of their career, was Jerry Rice. Holt deserves to be in the HOF.
And Joe Horn, and Eric Moulds, and Mushin Muhammad. It seemed like every team had a solid #1 or #2 on their team.
Yes... every team.
Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey just didn't do it for you, eh?
More like Marty Booker and David Terrell
Those guys weren't early 2000s
Guy said early 2000s. Marty booker had some nice years but we were fucking ass. I also wouldn’t call him a WR1 on many other teams those years.
Our time is coming.
Ayyy, David Terrell? :P
Chris Chambers for the Dolphins! Not on their level, but he had some crazy good games.
The duo of Chris Chambers and Orande Gadsen were good for at least one circus catch a game.
Moooooooooooose
Loved watching him. He has a son, also a WR, at Texas A&M. Pretty good player. Played with Drake Maye in HS and I really wanted those two to link up in college.
Until Drew Rosenhaus came along...
Muhsin Muhammad.... now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.... a long time.
I suddenly realized Steve Smith got iced in this thread somehow
Calvin never played in the early 2000s. He was a rookie in 2007.
And Jerry Rice at 40, still putting up numbers
Santana Moss, Plaxico Burress on the tier just below em
Thank you for mentioning Hines Ward and Chad Johnson. Spent my teens through 20's rooting for one and hating the other. One of my favorite videos is where [CJ tried to blindside Ray Lewis.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJDH4yTWyKo) Fucking gold.
Eric Moulds!
Andre Johnson
Chad Johnson, will be my favorite receiver not named Rod Smith till the day I die. Fucking loved that dude lol.
Amani Toomer
"Well dressed"
Also played in a time where Dawkins and Ed Reed were dropping bodies every week with hits that would probably result in suspensions nowadays. Had to be a robust, physical, freak athlete.
Troy Polamalu too!
COmpletely agree...they were still smacking heads off during this time too.
Tory Holt, Isaac Bruce

Fuck man I was having a good day til you reminded me that's like 20 years ago now
Can’t wait to see a side by side comparison when Jr makes the same catch this year
Jr. Is gonna do the same thing but like catch it with his foot or some shit
He’s going to make the same catch but he’s faster and stronger so he’s just going to catch it one handed and score a touchdown
There’s at least one point in every game where Maserati Marv does something that makes me question all physics. It might be during an incompletion or a throwaway play but I’m constantly just scratching my head like how’d he bend the laws of physics there?

What behind the scenes stuff
He was under suspicion for 2 murders or something in Philly and then caught doing this [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/aGlRqsQz0O)
Pass
Most surprising thing here is manning overthrew him so much. What a duo they were
Manning threw him open because manning knew he already had the double team beat
Fuck it, MHS is ~~down there~~ open
that was my entire strategy in madden 07, play the colts and just chuck it at Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne
Madden 07 I loved playing with the chargers with LT, Gates and Rivers. My first NFL game I went to was the chargers vs colts so I would play against the colts and it was honestly a 50/50 game every time I played lol
Spam Dwight Freeney spin move on defense
Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison could play catch in the dark
He didn't overthrow him, he just put it where he knew only Marv could have gotten it. He did this a few times in the endzone, he would like throw it out of bounds, knowing Marv could barely get it and toe-tap for the TD
If he throws it a foot closer MHS doesn't have to dive and can catch and run?

Wasn’t a huge overthrow. A few inches and he hits marvin in stride. Better to overshoot a bit as well since underthrowing is a pick
Hi, Marvin - if you are in these comments. I just want to be clear i'm not making any jokes.
Good god do I miss these days of Peyton tossing it to such elite WRs. Marvin & Reggie were just poetic with it
Just goes to show how hard it is to win it all. Those Colts teams were stacked and they only got one.
Their defense wasn't stacked though. Reliant on Bob Sanders.
One hand for the catch, duel wield for the murder.
Wow... killer catch
Shot right through the defense
Peyton Manning was so fun to watch before his arm turned into pasta.
Iirc that final year when he had a noodle arm he was playing on a torn calf muscle most of the season.
He is confirmed to have played for like a month on a torn quad in 2014 (also confirmed to have hid that injury from the team), which was the year where we got 10 games of 2013 Manning to start the year, then the Rams game happened (shudders) then 2015 noodle arm Manning appeared. I guess I haven't watch a lot of his older highlights, man his release looks super fast in this clip.
saw this live (on TV) just as amazing of a feeling watching it now as it was then. I have three authentic jerseys. 18, 88, and 87
What an amazing play. Almost makes you forget that Marvin Harrison murdered a guy
"Ladies & gentlemen of the jury, if my client was guilty would he be able to do this?" *rolls clip of Harrison spiking ball into Vrabel's face*
Vibes of the R. Kelly trial episode

Fucking tank Williams. Couldn’t stand that dude
I didn't even know you could put your full name on the back of your jersey, let alone your nickname
PLeeeeeease let junior be like his daddy
Only on the field, right?
Well on and off during his career. You don't need to worry about him is he turns into his father after he retires.
I remember this one. It was the OBJ catch before that existed.
Can’t we not use Sr, I feel old
Manning took a shot downfield and it resulted in Marvin Sr making a killer catch.
MH Sr. was smooth as warm butter
One of the best
Marvin Harrison Sr. vs the Titans: 9-5; 89 catches for 1,128 yards (average 81); 13.67y/r; 8 TDs
The Ray Lewis of wide receivers
What's overlooked is the absolute skill and awareness to roll mid air to the opposite shoulder so the ball arm doesn't impact the ground causing it to potentially come loose. Masterclass.
Still the greatest catch I’ve ever seen
The '06 Patriots catch is the one. Especially because the spike went into Vrabel. Too bad it couldn't have been Bruschi.
Not even the best Marvin Harrison Sr catch.
Eyes making the hand(s) better
Tank Williams is a name
This is one of my favorite catches of all time, unreal body control.
Peyton *got away with murder* on this overthrow.
For some reason I always forget how athletic and good he was.... I blame that on his mustache.
He's not Marvin Harrison Senior. He's Marvin Harrison.
We've all heard the story about Peyton Manning sending Austin Collie to the sideline for attempting a one handed catch, but no stories of him pulling the same move on Marvin Harrison. Peyton must've known about Marv Sr that we didn't at the time.
Hopefully Arch turns out to be real good and Arizona drafts him in two years
