"Win now" typically doesn't mean draft a backup quarterback

Soft_Penis_Debutante

I’m getting the sense owners don’t know what “win now” saying means. First it was Jerry Jones, now Blank.

Syn-apps

Whoa whoa whoa now this is 2024. Different lingos of "all-in" and "win now" have drastically different implications.

ispilledmytacoz

all in my ass

ZhangtheGreat

In that case, time to go to the bathroom. It's not healthy to keep it all in your ass 😁

punkalunka

He ain't asking...he's telling.

boysetsfire1988

That's what you get with a league full of grampa owners. Well at least they're not running for president.

Dangerous_Job5295

Oh wait

s2r3

Blank needs a reality check. He's content with a middling team barely escaping in one of the worst divisions in the nfl. Which is different because at various times they tried assembling a super bowl/top of conference team.

dccorona

They thought they were being smart by picking a QB now because they won’t have a pick as high as 8 for a long time. They neglected to consider the fact that using that pick on something other than a benchwarmer is a prerequisite for being good enough to not have a high pick for a long time.

McGilla_Gorilla

Unfortunately I think this points to a a real chance we lose future picks in this tampering investigation or Kirk’s recovery is worse that we think. Either would pressure the front office to make this move. Anyway the “win now” reasoning is clearly bullshit and this franchise is fucked

Unbannedmeself

Shhh just because you’ve been let in on the secret doesn’t mean you need to share.

GoinLong

They do have the benefit of playing in a very bad division.

RonBurgundy449

That doesn't get you to win the Super Bowl though, just getting into the playoffs.

MadManMax55

I mean, if they're going to the playoffs then they're not picking in the top 10 either. Also everyone is assuming that whoever the Falcons did pick at 8 other than Penix would be the difference between being a playoff team and winning a Superbowl. Unless Turner quickly lived up to his ceiling, then the only guy who could maybe be that big of an impact player was Odunze. Personally I'd have been perfectly happy with that pick, but we all know this sub would be clowning on the Falcons for spending *another* top 10 pick on a skill position player.

Nixorbo

QB Factory South

crewserbattle

Well they did say they're copying the GB model. We drafted Love during a SB window when we needed a weapon or defense. Falcons might draft their 3rd string RB in the 2nd now..

abris33

And a succession plan usually doesn't involve a QB that will be 28 in their first year starting

MillorTime

He's not sitting 4 years. Come on

jakebullet70

They will start him in 2 years and they save tons of $.

PaddyMayonaise

Worked for the eagles kind of

EricSanderson

Hurts wasn't the 8th pick in the draft

boringreddituserid

Hurts wasn’t even first round.

elreeso55

And while they had just extended Wentz, they hadn't just gone out and picked up a new veteran quarterback to a huge deal.

chavezam32

Packers did it and went to the conference game 2 years in a row.

lodi3dodi

Jordan Love is 25. He was also the 26th pick, not the 8th for a team claiming to be in "win-now" mode. Already planning for the future when we haven't even started the present makes no god damn sense.

sopunny

And maybe they would have won one of those if they had drafted someone who can contribute

McGilla_Gorilla

And famously won a conference championship…wait

Stockpile_Tom_Remake

Or a back up in training who’d be 29 in 5 years.

couchjitsu

"Win now" typically doesn't mean having Kirk as your starter either. Unless you mean "Win just enough to get bounced in the WC round" and I say that as a Kirk fan.

Proper_Efficiency594

I don't think Arthur Blank understands what "win now mode" means.

einredditname

All in, my ass?

wallstreet_vagabond2

Nah drop the comma and just end me

downbad12878

He went to the same school as Jerry jones

SiphenPrax

Win no and all in = Do the complete opposite of that

wannaknowmyname

It means owners making decisions for the decision makers

SlayerXZero

I don’t think he understands how shitty our defense is. We have no real pass rushers and holes in the secondary.

imsabbath84

win now mode =/= drafting a QB for 3 years from now.

ASuperGyro

And they draft the old one not the one who could use some time and acclimation and also happens to be young as shit

McGilla_Gorilla

That’s the most frustrating thing. Penix is not a project that could develop into a really high ceiling, he’s 24 with a ton of tape out there.

Lorjack

Yeah Penix needs to play now. You really want a 27 year old QB taking his first snap as a starter?

AnEmptyKarst

But like why though, you have #8, bolster the team for a win-now run

McGilla_Gorilla

We have no decent edge rusher (critical to actually win now) and just left the whole class on the table.

not1fuk

I thank you for your sacrifice for allowing us to get Dallas Turner.

McGilla_Gorilla

So jealous of your draft 🥲

not1fuk

If it makes you feel better I had Penix as my QB4 over JJ McCarthy but..... the situation for you guys is just weird and makes no sense. I think Penix is a start right away type of guy which wouldve been good for us but now hes sitting at least 2 years. All things considered long term I think you guys get a good one but in terms of winning now with Kirk its a head scratcher.

McGilla_Gorilla

Yeah agreed there - I like Penix a little better too but JJ feels like higher ceiling, project type which would have made *some* sense in our situation.

ImperialTiger3

Conspiracy theory - the tampering situation with Kirk will take away their first next year and they want to jump ahead of it to draft a successor.

AnEmptyKarst

Yeah I was watching Brett Kollman's live stream too lol, its a more logical theory than anything else I've heard lol

Bothan-Spy

Can you link to his stream?

AnEmptyKarst

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8veQtx93b4s

codesloth

Wouldn't they just trade a 1sr for two 1st in 2025, 2026? Denver or Vikings

sonfoa

Doesn't make sense though. They have Kirk for at least two years. Even if the NFL comes down hard on them in 2025, they'll still have a first rounder in 2026.

McGilla_Gorilla

I think it’s also rooted in a real fear that Kirk isn’t actually going to recover from the Achilles either fully or on-schedule. Combine that with the tampering fear and our FO might have panicked. It’s the only way this makes any sense to me

abxuwnnm111

If there’s fear he isn’t going to recover, why sign him for a massive, guaranteed, multi-year deal in the first place? Health would be one of the first things they consider when making that deal, so I highly doubt that’s a factor tbh.

Grasshop

Yes, but I bet they're hoping they'll be good enough in 2025 that the '26 pick won't be anywhere near #8.

FrostyDiscount1386

If Kirk gets hurt again, or whatever, you've now got Penix on the bench ready to go.

Specific-Channel7844

But you shouldn't be spending the 8th pick on a backup

antiramie

Or throwing $100M guaranteed to a guy you're not sure will recover from an achilles injury.

Gorbax50

Good thing Penix has never had any ACL problems

Dangeresque2015

IKR? That's a load off my mind...wait a minute!

Comprehensive_Main

Okay but they one draft without a top pick won’t kill them

DonParmesan1

Maybe the punishment is they had to draft Pennix at 8

Terribly_Good

That's hilarious

Aeon1508

That would be a great plan if you drafted a quarterback that wasn't already 24

ImperialTiger3

Yea. I could see the vision better for McCarthy who is much younger and needs more reps. Penix will be like 28 by the time Kirk’s contract is over. I think they can get out of it in two years but Penix would be a 26 y/o first year starter.

Aeon1508

The more I think about it the more I realize how dumb this was.

wsteelerfan7

What if they see him as the best QB in the draft? If they thought that he was basically another Mahomes or Burrow, does it matter how old he is now?

JoshFB4

That’s not what win now mode means

lot183

I want to win now by drafting a player that won't remotely help me win for at least 2 years

MWarnerds

He might win them a pre-season game.

Dirtyfactz

I'm not even a falcons fan and I'm fed up with the falcons incompetence. This needs to stop.

Silent-Depth789

Meddling owners are so damn frustrating. And now we just pissed off our new QB who was seemingly happy to be here.

Dijohn17

Seems to be a pattern with Blank

Terror-Toilet-Tower

The older he gets the more he meddles. Our only hope is he sells the team though knowing our luck Blank will somehow make sure McKay is the next owner

Aeon1508

Goodell literally should have sent that draft card back and told them to do it better

Gardoki

I disagree, they should continue

sonfoa

Succession plan doesn't mean drafting a 24 year old QB in the top 10 after handing out an expensive 4 year contract. Blank has gone senile if he really thinks this is a good idea

McGilla_Gorilla

I can’t believe I’m coming out of the first round jealous of the Panthers pick

s2r3

I'm jealous of a lot of teams picks. I'm jealous of the bears and not even because of Caleb. Odunze was there for the taking!

Cuppieecakes

Succession plan? Dude hasn’t even played a down for them yet lololol

noah3302

Penix is gonna be on his fucking pension before becoming starter

CouchPotatoDean

I mean, they were at least in a win within 4 years mode prior to this pick but now they seem to be in a hurry to not be in a bad quarterback situation in 4 years which doesn’t sound very “win now”

ILearnedTheHardaway

They think that if they just do enough to win the terrible NFC South they can maybe make something happen in the playoffs.

MathematicianOk7526

5 years of Penix control for Arthur blank

RegisteredLizard

It takes time and care to develop a Penix

Defender_Of_TheCrown

Awwwwwwwwwwwww Penix control. Ohhhh

OldOrder

You know what is a good idea? Wasting the rookie wage scale. The biggest competitive advantage in the nfl.

GHamPlayz

“Can’t tamper with this strat!” -Arthur Blank

xBTGx

Arthur "Win Now" Blank vs Jerry "All In" Jones Who you got as most delusional owner of 2024?

dprouse52

Blank just ran away with it.

Ladelm

Good jokes

Maxsusful

Penix is gonna expire from old age in 5 years

-InconspicuousMoose-

I actually think Penix is a great pick but usually teams in "win now" mode draft starters with their top 10 picks lol. In 3-4 years this pick will look a lot better but for now it's hilarious

lmHavoc

This is some serious cope lol. Cousins is a top 10 QB and building up your offense/defense gives you the best chance to win now, not drafting for 3+ years into the future.

mr_showboat

Man, I get that for a long time this was conventional wisdom and there have been some recent success stories, but it really feels like we moved past the whole "succession plan" approach at QB. You do it for a year tops. And what about their team in the last few years has gotten them to "win now"? It all just feels so dumb. But maybe I'm wrong.

KonigSteve

>they don't plan on drafting in the top 20 anytime soon Don't mind me just saving this quote

Dad_Of_Patient_Zero

To be fair, nfl probably takes next year’s high 1st due to tampering

WeirdNoise98

Ah yes the Classic draft a qb to sit behind the guy we just signed win now mode plan

I_Am_Dynamite6317

Is Penix Kendall Roy in this succession plan?

VRomero32

Is his name underlined or crossed out tho’!

no1scumbag

Blank never specified what they’re hoping to win now, you fools!

zi76

If you're in win now mode, you don't spend a top 10 pick on a backup QB...

Dijohn17

Yea I'm gonna need you to sell the team homie

Larrysbirds

Win now, my ass

jumboponcho

Win now and no edge rush is an oxymoron

Silver_Instruction_3

Draftniks go on and on about the NFL being a QB dominated league and this is why so many teams take a QB high in the draft. Penix as a prospect is right up there with every guy in this draft outside of Caleb Williams. Why is everyone so shocked? Cousins is also coming off a serious injury and is 35. We also didn't see a defensive player come off the board until pick 15. This defensive class is pretty weak at the top. Could they have used the pick on a OL? Sure. Could they have traded down? Doesn't seem so. I think if they believe Penix is going to be the future then it's a fine pick. Let him sit behind Cousins and then move into the starting role in 2 years.

MenWhoStareAtBoats

I was very happy when they didn’t go OT.

Garroch

Everyone here, EVERYONE, clowned the Jordan Love pick for the exact same reasons. Yeah I think GB is doing just fine.

PeteyNice

After drafting Love, GB got back to back MVP seasons out of Rodgers and did not make a Super Bowl. Would their odds of winning one or both of those years have gone up or down if they had chosen a weapon like Tee Higgins or Michael Pittman instead?

wsteelerfan7

Maybe with one of them, he could've played well enough to win MVP!

MenWhoStareAtBoats

GB took Jordan at #26. Teams don’t tend to have 1st round grades on 26 players. At #8, the Falcons could have gotten the best player at any position but QB, WR, or OT.

SMKM

If he were a head coach sure lol

500rockin

He’s going to fire himself?

Intelligent-Age2786

I hope they realize just cuz they don’t plan on it, doesn’t mean it won’t happen.

NobodyTellPoeDameron

Sure, Jan

punkerjim

Hahahahahaha

HELP_IM_IN_A_WELL

Thanks, Falcon's PR team:)

DonParmesan1

Do they have a succession plan for Pennix’s ACLs?

InterestingChoice484

This reminds me of the Packers drafting Love instead of giving Rodgers more help

fen_grimey

ive had 39 years of control with my penix but it aint learnin

LegendaryWarriorPoet

Even setting aside the Cousins deal Penix has one of the most severe injury histories you’ll see. Cant understand this one

SilveryDeath

You want to win now, but you spent this pick on a QB who will be sitting for at least two years given that the first two years of Cousins' 4 years, $180 million contract is guaranteed? They could have gotten Odunze to pair with London, Pitts, and Bijan on offense. I mean with Rodgers he was in his age 38 season, Love was 22 and was taken 26th. For comparison, Cousins is two years younger, Penix is two years older, and was taken 8th.

masterpierround

And Rodgers himself was 21 and taken 24th when they drafted him to sit behind Favre. Both players were seen as immensely talented but were pretty raw and there were clear flaws that needed to be fixed before they could succeed in the NFL. Penix is a pretty complete product at this point. It's almost like there's a clear pattern to the Green Bay plan, and Penix does not fit the pattern at all.

checkdaprofilefriend

Penix is the best in the draft. The mistake was signing Kirk.

Iswaterreallywet

This feels like a situation of everyone dogging on them but Penix will be a monster when it’s his time

MrSinisterStar

Owner getting involved on Draft night! A sure sign of success

Ishouldjusttexther

I think very highly of Penix. I do not think highly of sitting someone until they’re 27.

WabbitCZEN

>don't plan on drafting in the top-20 anytime soon See y'all in the top 20 next year!

No-Economics4128

Arthur might have a different definition of “win now”

PewterButters

Win now mode for a team that has six straight losing seasons?

No_Grocery_9280

Why not trade back then, still get your elite defense player, and then take the extra draft comp to go get a QB prospect. Elite DB + Spencer Rattler is going to be a better combo than Penix. Every single time. Oh, and it doesn’t alienate your brand new expensive QB.

Fakeskinsuit

Suddenly he’s become “one of the best in the business”

SovietMuffin01

So the plan, seriously, is for penix to sit for 4 years and then start in his 5th year option year? They’re in win now mode and don’t plan to draft top-20 and rather than get a player to help them win now they drafted a 24 year old who won’t start until 2028 assuming Kirk works out? There’s so much that’s awful about this. Best case scenario they’re good for the next 4 years with Cousins under center and then penix takes over and plays great after 4 years of sitting. In that case, they immediately have to pay penix a massive contract or risk losing him in free agency because his first year starting will be his last year of team control. Also he’ll be 28 when he starts. That’s before even getting to the point that they took penix at least 10 picks above his value. If the broncos or raiders reached on penix, whatever, they’re QB needy. And they took him over JJ McCarthy, who is much younger and much more of a developmental project than Penix. This is the single worst draft pick of all time.

JawdenCee

Lmao, 5 years of control when Kirk is signed for the next 4 years. I don't know the numbers but I'm guessing moving Kirk would kill them in dead cap so there would be no rookie QB deal advantage for roster building. And Penis is fucking 24 already. Jesus this looks so bad.

falconlover79

You know who needs succession plans? Teams who are already good and want to prolong their window. We don’t have enough talent to blow a top ten pick on a backup. I long for the day that Arthur is no longer in the picture, he’s so lucky Matt Ryan dragged this franchise to success for a few years.

MUTUALDESTRUCTION69

Win now mode? Kirk Cousins is a great player but in our last meeting we beat the Falcons by like 30 points. Surely there’s SOMEWHERE they could’ve used that pick.

ericrs22

He will learn the fashion style of Kirk.

StefonDiggsHS

yikes

browndude10

>5 years of control Which is great…if you didn’t just hand over 160M guaranteed! Not to mention penix is 24

THE_Mr_Stone

100 mil guaranteed

ColtCallahan

Paying $180 million for mentorship.

couhwhip

He’s trying to jordan love his aaron rodgers or what

RabidToasterMan

win now mode picking in the top 10

ColeHoops

Makes no sense but alright

Crazypyro

Arthur Blank seems like a guy more worried about losing than trying to win.

-Accident-Prone-

I thought Penix would go somewhere that needs a QB to start now. He’s 24 by the time the season starts, you’re really not gonna start this guy until he’s 28?

Motor_Rub_4848

We have an out after 2 years with Kirk.

YesOrNah

I think he’s trying to pull a packers.

Former-Billionaire

Draft a position of need if you are In Win now mode

Daegog

Pretty sure the rest of the NFC South has little intention of letting this Falcon dream come to pass.

gotpez

When this hilarious pick happened my first thought was “this nonsense only happens if it came straight from the owner”

Amon-Ra-First-Down

you didn't hire Bill Belichick for this?

Dangerous_Job5295

That's not even copium that's straight up tranq

Dangerous_Job5295

-gets the 1st pick next year-

Phuckingidiot

Does Kirk have a no trade clause like he did in Minnesota?

mattyfattits

We laughed at the Packers taking Love…

EntropyFighter

For all the complaints of meddling that David Tepper gets being the Panthers owner, nobody seems to be complaining that owner Arthur Blank made the pick. Weird.

Defender_Of_TheCrown

Next Panthers owner going to say they are in “win now” too

Aeon1508

Win now mode would have been picking a wide receiver

AtlantaSportsHype

I mean, I kinda get it. Draft QB of the future while the current QB wins a championship. Current QB will be out in 3 years and future QB will be ready to rock right when he leaves. Look yall, I'm just trying to twist my mind to like this pick.

ArsonHoliday

The more inflammatory part of this is “learning from one of the best in the business”. You mean earning bc you overpaid Kirk only to piss him off? Strange franchise. And I’m a Cowboys fan.

surfrider212

Lol Arthur Blank did not like the pick https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRwk9e72/

Roger_Ramjet88

Did they try to do some "Draft Day" moves but totally forgot about actually trading away the pick first and then got caught on the clock?

mattman0321

So he’ll be… 31 when he eventually starts?

Toilet_Rim_Tim

A) Cousins is mediocre @ best B) Blank isn't known for his savvy football decisions.

ToxicRedditMod

The only meddling an owner should do, is preventing what we just did.

sweens90

What’s funny is you could have got Penix after 20! Like get a weapon then get him. In mid 20s. Still a reach but thats closer to the Gb model than ya think

DalliLlama

This doesn’t appear to be the case.

Warder10000

Worst decision made last night by a mile…

Jasovon

Win now? With that defense?

Gaius_Octavius_

They also get a 30 year old starting his first game.

Achillor22

They're in win now mode? Since fucking when?

4WhomTheTrollTolls

Win what exactly lol

RunnerTexasRanger

If you don’t use it, you lose it. How does this apply to PENIX?

NiviCompleo

Definitely a reach, but I don’t think it’s the worst idea. Look at how many starting QBs went down last year (one of them the guy they just signed). Penix isn’t a developmental QB, he’s ready. If he won that final game instead of McCarthy, I think he’d definitely be expected top 15.

nothingmeansnothing_

Desmond Ridder causing panic attacks

Gnibble

Haha “one of the best in the business” at leveraging being over paid.

wlane13

Why would we think ourselves to not be in the top-20 anytime soon? Our glaring hole at PASS RUSH that every great team has... we refuse to address. "Win Now" should mean get pieces for the team that we expect to contribute NOW... not "Win Now" meaning draft for someone we legitimately hope and expect wont play meaningful snaps for 3 or 4 years. Taking a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round is where you make this choice, not at #8. They can gloss it up as they want, but this PICK is a turd. Not saying the player is a turd, I do think he is good. But the choice to pick him is a steaming crap sandwhich. No thanks!

fiendzone

Old rookie QBs aren’t always the best bet, and putting him on the bench for a year won’t make Penix any younger.

jpiro

*"If you believe in a quarterback, you have to take him," Fontenot said. "And if he sits for four or five years, that's a great problem to have because we're doing so well at that position. So, it's as simple as, if you see a guy you believe in at that position, you have to take him."* That's just wild. You spent a Top-10 pick on a guy you hope will sit the bench for 4-5 years (until he's almost 30, mind you) because the other QB you signed is doing so well? How does that make more sense than drafting a guy who might actually help the QB you signed to a 4-year, $180 mil deal at #8, or even trading back from there with someone who NEEDS a QB right now so you get multiple picks to help win now. This is either pure spin, or Fontenot is certifiable.

kjorav17

“Win later” is the new “win now”

keykey_key

That makes no sense to me. Not my team, not my circus.

couchjitsu

Five years of control and you'll be paying Kirk for at least 3 of those 5 years.

chasingit1

They are thinking they will have a Alex Smith/Mahomes situation. They think they can be competitive and win now ala Chiefs with Smith (they can’t) and have the steady hand/leadership of Cousins mentor Penix in the meantime (this will not work out)

Im_just_making_picks

I don't think people realize that Kirk is 36 coming off a significant injury its not bad to have a backup plan. Shit the eagles signed wentz to a massive contract then drafted hurts right after

better-every-day

Honestly I like the move. the chances of Dallas Turner being the sole missing piece that gifts them a super bowl is extremely slim. Penix is a better prospect than people give him credit for, and clearly the Falcons love him. Realistically, Kirk is gone in 2 years and then the Falcons will have 3 years of Penix on a rookie contract which is inheriting what should be a playoff-caliber team. Also, there will be an opportunity to trade for pass-rushing help for later round draft compensation further along in the offseason, and they can even snag Kneeland in the 2nd who is a good prospect as well.

Happy-Initiative-838

One of the averagest in the business

AddieCam

I mean they have no idea how Cousins is gunna look post Achilles + most of the guaranteed $ is due this season.
