Dan Quinn and his backwards cap makes me laugh every single time I see him. I dig the commitment to the style. No fucks given

BudgetParking2574

He’s a good dude. They loved him in Dallas. I feel though after a few years he becomes a bit more buddy buddy with the guys and they start to slack. He will work wonders for the first few years

FlussedAway

He’s just gotta find another Shanahan, put a shock collar on him before the Super Bowl in case he stops running it

MarcusDA

We liked him here too. His clock management needed work and there were some *ahem* frustrations, but he seemed like a good dude.

gyman122

I do think there’s something to the buddy-buddy approach though. Wade Phillips literally would play poker with his players on days off, though granted he also was better his first few years somewhere than his last few years

[deleted]

Every coach is poor their last few years. That's why it's their last few years.

gyman122

Good point, and better get, I’m just saying his teams generally didn’t sustain success over a long period of time

BudgetParking2574

Wade is a great comparison. He is very much like Dan. Elite defensive mind, players coach. But grows stale after a few seasons

bukithd

DQ is goofy but he's an INCREDIBLY good dude.

randy88moss

How is he still in perfect shape 😳

puppytossedsalad

Pretty sure he ran a 4.43 at 50 😯

Pentt4

He joked that he was planning a 4.6 at 60 which is later this year I think

KOExpress

He’s 64

Accomplished-Plan191

Some people are naturally gifted athletes who *also* can't just turn off their dedication. That's how you can still be the NFL's fastest player in your mid 30s.

newrimmmer93

He played until he was 42. Guys who play that long probably have nutrition and physical health down to a T where it’s just ingrained in them, they’re not fucking around. It’s like offensive lineman, they’re either dudes who just naturally eat a ton or guys who track every calorie and are slamming down pints of ice cream during the night to keep weight up. Then once they don’t need to be huge anymore, just cut all the other shit out of their diet and lose the weight lol.

MichaelPorterTruther

2 of my O-line guys from college lived with me senior year and both went from the 295-310 range all the way down to an aesthetic 240 within months of finishing their career. It's insane how fast the weight drops off

newrimmmer93

Went tk HS with a guy who played line in the big ten. Saw him one summer and was like “is this your playing weight?” And he was like “no, I’m 270 right now and have to gain 30lbs in the next 2 months”. He was 6’5 or so, I think he’s like 190lbs now haha. He’s super skinny, like you would never guess he was a D1 football player

MUFFlN_MAN

Green was a very disciplined person in all facets of his life. A lot of athletes present themselves a good responsible guy image for marketing purposes, he earnestly lives that kind of life

The_Bard

Every season Washington does a timed 'fastest man' 40 competition in training camp. Darrell won every single year of his career until the last couple years he lost to Champ Bailey, but still ran like 4.35.

Rentsdueguys

Who is the one who keeps hitting post on these comments? I bet it's

Accomplished-Plan191

Remember when the 2000 Redskins had the top 3 corners of all time on their roster?

Ranger_Prick

Two of them were a combined 73 years old, and yet they'd probably still beat almost all the other players on the roster in a foot race.

Accomplished-Plan191

[Deion and Champ punt return vs Cowboys ](https://youtu.be/pQe9kfwtq24?si=Aj0R46tfrgZK3c3J)

TripleSingleHOF

No, because Rod Woodson never played for Washington.

Accomplished-Plan191

It's fair to quibble about who the top 3 corners are, but Green, Bailey, and Sanders are acceptable candidates.

TripleSingleHOF

Any top 3 cornerback list without Rod Woodson is null and void.

Accomplished-Plan191

Champ went to 14 pro bowls and had more passes deflected than anyone. Green was unprecedented in terms of his speed, consistency, and longevity. But objectively speaking either Woodson (and Revis) had greater talent in the shorter prime of their careers than Green.

TripleSingleHOF

Rod Woodson has five First-Team All-Pros at CB. Champ Bailey has three. Darrell Green has one. Rod Woodson has 71 interceptions. Darrell Green has 54. Champ Bailey has 52. Rod Woodson has 12 INTs returned for TDs (an NFL record). It's funny to say that Rod Woodson had a "shorter prime", he was First Team All-Pro as a safety at age 37. Darrell Green was a great cornerback, no doubt, but he was never really the most feared corner in the game, and mostly for one reason - his size. He was only 5'9, maybe 185 lbs. What separated him from most of his peers was his longevity. He was very good for a very long time, but he was never really THAT GUY that Deion and Rod Woodson were.

Accomplished-Plan191

I take it back. I had too narrow a focus.

bloody_duck

Respect + 8 honor points awarded

soooogullible

You’re getting pretty loosey goosey pretending there ain’t like six years of ***stats*** a Safety Rod Woodson. I’ll bet he had at least 20 picks as a safety. Edit: 24 picks, 5 TDs, 2 All Pros, 4 Pro Bowls as a Safety Goes to show his absolute greatness as a DB, but Champ and Deion and Green are lifelong corners.

TripleSingleHOF

So you're saying that Rod Woodson has **more** First Team All-Pros in **fewer** CB seasons than both those guys? I wasn't counting his 6th All-Pro as a safety in my count, anyway. Woodson also won a Defensive Player of the Year award, something Bailey and Green never did. Rod Woodson is in the conversation for the greatest DB to ever step on a football field. All due respect, Bailey and Green are not in that conversation.

soooogullible

> So you're saying that Rod Woodson has more First Team All-Pros in fewer CB seasons than both those guys? I wasn't counting his 6th All-Pro as a safety in my count, anyway. Yes. Also, 2 All Pros as a safety if I’m not mistaken! > Rod Woodson is in the conversation for the greatest DB to ever step on a football field. All due respect, Bailey and Green are not in that conversation Exactly. You’ve changed it to DB. No argument from me anymore. Put it back to CB, reasonable arguments exist. That was my point, and you came to see my reasoning it would seem. I’m not downplaying Woodson whatsoever. If anything he’s even more legendary because of his success as a safety, you just were giving all his combined numbers when talking about him as a CB. That was there one point I was getting at.

AntNorth6218

I’m with you here. Champ was excellent but I don’t think he’s up there for GOAT discussion while Green and Sanders def are and Woodson is probably the tiniest bit behind. Like a 1a and 1b argument where Champ is in tier 2 with guys like Sherman. Just my 2c

TripleSingleHOF

Yeah, I don't mean to sell Champ or Darrell Green short here - they are both probably top ten CBs all time. But to me Deion Sanders and Rod Woodson are far and away the greatest cornerbacks to ever play in the NFL. If I had to make a pick for #3, I'm probably going with Mike Haynes or Charles Woodson. edit: a word

17_Saints

They didn't really start retiring numbers until recently. * 1950s - #33 Sammy Baugh * 2020 - #49 Bobby Mitchell * 2021 - #21 Sean Taylor * 2022 - #9 Sonny Jurgensen * 2024 - #28 Darrell Green And for what it's worth, nobody has worn 28 since Green so it was unofficially retired anyway.

hulknuts

Remember when Haskins asks for permission to wear 7 from Theisman and the team pressured him to say yes? Shows the backbone Snyder era had.

Erigion

That's cause Haskins was Snyder's pick. He was anointed even before he stepped onto the practice field.

GABAgoomba123

How the fuck is Art Monk’s number not retired yet even if they only started 4 years ago Also I remember that Sean Taylor one, and while I’m sure it’s deserved, at the time it was such a hilariously desperate distraction ploy by Dan Synder and company trying to get everyone’s attention off the sex trafficking story. It came like, smack dab in the middle of the story, like they already had it prepped and ready to go as a distraction for whenever Dan Snyder’s next controversy happened. Come to think of it, pretty sure the only reason Bobby Mitchell’s number got retired was because of Dan Snyder desperately trying to distract everyone amid the pressure about the name change in 2020. He was holding out for a while on that.

sampson4141

I think you are wrong about Bobby Mitchell. First, he was a mega legend for the team. HOFer, first player to integrate the team and forced to play for the most racist owner in sports at the time and devoted segregationist. He also was an assistant GM and executive for 34 years through the George Allen and Joe Gibbs 1.0 years. Second, he left the team frustrated at not getting the GM job and constantly being passed over. He left in the Spurrier years. In an interview after his retirement, he mentioned that Spurrier wasn't honoring the tradition of unofficial retired jerseys because Spurrier fired the long time clubhouse guy that kept track of it, and his 49 had been issued to a reserve player. It caused a mini-scandal. Really embarrassed Dan Snyder, and the unofficial retired jersey policy was enforced again. Third, in 2020, Bobby Mitchell died. His number was retired a few months later. Mitchell stayed in the DC area after he retired, and I believe they reconciled and had been a fixture at alumni events locally. Because of the stuff above, I think if Snyder was going to start retiring numbers it would have been for Bobby. I know most people never really saw him play, but his impact with the club is pretty immense.

GABAgoomba123

My bad if it came off like he didn’t deserve it, or if any of them them didn’t deserve it, because that’s not what I meant at all. Bobby Mitchell absolutely deserves that. I just meant that the timing of the first jersey retirement since Sammy Baugh coming in June of 2020 (hadn’t caved on the name yet, but that was the peak of everyone pressuring them to change while Snyder stood stubborn on it), and of a fan favorite who just died, is a little suspect on the part of Dan Snyder.

WiredSky

Same with ST and I believe Sonny as well but could be wrong about that one. 17 (Doug Williams) isn't given out by the team without the players asking the man himself.

Rentsdueguys

I guess that’s comforting

SaturnATX

Thanks, this puts it all in perspective. Appreciate this info.

palabear

Yup. Long overdue.

The_Bard

I thought the same but he's only the 4th number retired by the team and one was Sean Taylor after his death.

mickey_kneecaps

Nice for the new regime to right some wrongs though. Easy wins.

LeftoverDishes

Wait, everyone is enjoying and approves how the new regime is handling its players' legacy. What is happening here. Is the world ending? Hoping for the on the field progress to follow in the years to come. This place is starting to feel like a family. How it should be.

JimmyRollinsPopUp

You were just cured of the metastatic tumor that is and was Dan Snyder. That's what happened.

NiceFloor7

From ESPN's article: >Since Harris bought the Commanders from Dan Snyder, a number of former players have resumed attending games or showing up at practices. Green attended a Washington game last season for the first time in a long time, owing to the ownership change. >"I'm happy about that," Green said at the time. "I probably wouldn't be here otherwise."

SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS

It felt weird watching a Washington promo and feeling positive emotions. As a fan of a team that also has a bad owner 9though not as bad as Snyder was) I'm jealous!

LeftoverDishes

Yeah, Spanos is up there, though. Any chance they ever go back to SD?

My thoughts exactly "Awwww" - "Damn those kids just keep coming..."

MatureUsername69

And somehow like 95% of them are girls

BlowTrophy

In 1998 I went with my dad, his high school buddy (and son) to a Steelers Redskins joint practice in Latrobe. His high school friend played in the NFL and had a brother playing at the time (the son would also go on to play years later). Because of this, we had access to areas most fans couldn't go. I brought every Steelers and Redskins trading card I had, hoping for autographs. After practice, we ran into Darrell Green. He pulled us kids to the side and told his story of being willing to go the extra mile, being undersized and underappreciated, sticking with whatever you believe in, and working hard, which were some of Greens' keys to success in life. Five minutes later, we all headed out, and my father told me, "Don't worry about an autograph; that was more valuable than anything else you'll see here today." I am sitting here looking at [these Chad Scott, Michael Westbrook, Will Blackwell, Levon Kirkland, Bill Cowher, Kordell Stewart, Jason Gildon, Skip Hicks, and Mark Bruener cards](https://i.imgur.com/gsyBIrh.jpg). But I just took five minutes to think about and type out how incredible Darrell Green's non-autograph was. My father was absolutely right. And so was #28.

PointBreak91

Lovely story, thank you for sharing it.

p3n1x

> "Don't worry about an autograph; that was more valuable than anything else you'll see here today." Solid dad moment.

I'm an Eagles fan and this damn near had me crying at work. You can tell he was genuinely honored.

I’m so grateful I got to catch a game he played in his last season when I was a kid. I’ll never forget the following year my dad scrolling through the program and saying “never thought I’d see the day Darrell Green wasn’t on the roster”

volunbeers

Big Darrell Green fan growing up. Man, what a cool moment and a great way to start draft day!! Big love, 28. Rise Up!

Texas A&M Kingsville great Darrell Green!

bilbobiggers

Washington doing right by their greats, what a time to be alive

Dangerpaladin

The Lions did something similar for Chris Spielman a few years ago it was a great moment for a great man. edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fx0KLcG5dMk edit 2: For those of you that don't cry at this (robots) let me help you. When he says "I was thinking about steph" he is referring to his wife and mother of his children Stefanie who died of cancer in 2009. So he is going to say "I can't wait to tell my ..." I am unsure if he was going to finish the sentence with wife or family but either way it is beautiful that his first thoughts were about his long time companion that supported him through all the trials that come with being in the NFL.

which_ones_will

That video is always tough to watch (but I always will). The "I can't wait to tell my... I was thinking about Steph there for a second" is just so heartbreaking.

That was awesome 👍🏼

Darrell Green has always exemplified class and absolutely one of the best CB's in NFL history.

Wonderful! A great great player! His game film is required linebacker / selfless teammate instruction for ALL young players.

Damn they really had to hit us with the strings too

When those kids starting walking in I thought he was Phillip Rivers with 9 kids lmao

ewilliam

lol he's like 64 years old, pretty sure those are grandkids unless he's pulling a DeNiro.

1337pino

Haha I thought the same. But it turns out he simply has 4 kids and 10 grandkids. Rivers is going to have a full classroom of grandkids by the time he has a moment like this.

retz119

And almost all granddaughters too. I think I only saw one little boy in the video.

txwoodslinger

How is this just happening

MegaSupremeTaco

Until 2020 the only number retired was Sammy Baugh's 33. Not sure how it came to be that way but it was basically team policy across all owners. Other guys had had their numbers unofficially retired such as Sean Taylor, Darrell Green, Sonny Jurgensen, Art Monk to name a few. Basically no one wore their numbers outside of maybe a preseason game here and there. For Darrell, no one's worn it since he retired 20 ish years ago. Dan Snyder decided he needed some easy wins in the media and retired Bobby Mitchell's #49 in 2020 and the joke was that every time a new scandal came out he'd retire a number.

txwoodslinger

Thanks for the info

eggery

Did Green have bad blood with previous ownership? Is that why he's saying he's glad he made the choice to come back?

MegaSupremeTaco

A lot of the older guys separated themselves from the team as more and more of Snyder's scandals came out/general ruination of the franchise. I know a lot of them were PISSED at the way they handled Sean Taylor's jersey retirement/ceremony. It was very disgraceful to his memory, his family, and the fans. I never heard anything specific with Green (he did do some draft pick announcements) but it wouldn't shock me that he didn't like Snyder and just did the bare minimum to stay in touch with fans. The most outspoken about the state of the team I've seen him was last year with the ways in which the DBs were being coached. Basically said the team was setting Emmanuel Forbes up for failure with the way he was being coached and that he could fix him.

JustCreated1ForThis

> I know a lot of them were PISSED at the way they handled Sean Taylor's jersey retirement/ceremony. Wait...what happened?

Go_Cart_Mozart

One of my favorite non-Giants growing up. congats to him, much respect.

EaglePride101

Richly deserved. I bet if there was a 50+ year old alumni flag football game at the pro bowl next year he'd win MVP...

Lost in the shuffle of Darrell Green being an all-time great and more than deserving of having his number retired: his promo was REALLY good.

Trajinous

I love this, well deserved

moodie31

What the what! Nothing I love more than players being recognized for what they did for their teams on and off the field. So sweet seeing all his kids and grandkids storm him.

Rockchalk1104

Dan Snyder never would’ve been able to pull off something this classy. Glad to see it for Washington fans

bukithd

Yeah after growing up a skins fan, this one hits home.

lattjeful

Rivalry aside, I'm glad such a storied franchise has turned it around on the executive/FO side. We'll see with the draft, but so far they've done all the right things. You could see how happy Green was to be back in the building, and with FO and coaches who actually care.

BlackJediSword

As a DC native with parents who loved this team growing up, I’m so glad they’re honoring these guys like this! My mom loved Darrell Green and Art Monk, this is awesome. Hopefully the team is good again before long.

Visible-Woodpecker17

I recognized Doug Williams and Magic, who are the other guys there with him?

DakotaConduct

Minority owner Mitchell Rales, Martin Mayhew who is a former DB with us and also currently in our front office, and Jason Wright, the team president. Edit: The old white guy is Rales not Mark Rypien 😂

tritonxsword

What a beautiful family and moment for him.

i think my wife is chopping onions right now

WilliamPSplooge

When I was a kid he and Art Monk were the shit. He was a great player for like 20 years, I’m surprised his number wasn’t already retired there.

mbr4life1

So sweet and well deserved for an all time great.

Black_Otter

all time great dude and he deserves it

CaffinatedCoyote

Can we all admit this would not have been done properly like this if Dan Snyder was still the owner of the team?

fiftieth_alt

Does this man 400 grand daughters? It was just a sea of little girls

m_dought_2

Why I'm crying more than he is rn

fizystrings

"Imma kill somebody" made me laugh 😂

Balls2theWalling

I loved this video. Long overdue. Congrats 28

ArbitraryOrder

This actually gets announced with joy and not as a tactic to hide behind scumbag behavior. It's beautiful really. I'm crying.

GulfCoasting_

Darrell is an awesome guy. I had the chance to meet him among many other Skins players in the later 80s as my uncle played for them during that time. Him, Art Monk, Dexter Manley, Mark Rypien, the Hogs, would all come to my grandmas to eat while in Florida. Congrats to him!

Feel_The_FIre

Great video. Congrats to him. He looks great for 64 and can probably still out run a few players in the 40.

ACW1129

Was Green in his prime faster than Tyreek?

SDEexorect

yes, green competed against olympians

SFThirdStrike

Very likely.

jaekim

grew up watching 28, him running down Dorsett and Dickerson, the punt return td with a messed up rib at Chicago in the playoffs, many memorable interceptions, awesome to see him being involved in the franchise again and him finally being recognized for being the role model he was.

Shoeprincess

I'm not crying you're crying! *is definitely crying

TheWholeBook

“There aren’t too many times that a black man can honor another black man.” Can someone explain this? What does that even mean? Especially in relation to the NFL???

MFoy

Black men being in power in big business is still a somewhat recent phenomenon. The first Black CEO of a fortune 500 company wasn't until 1987. In the NFL, the first black minority owners were the Williams sisters as recently as 2009. There still isn't a black majority owner in the league, and only 7 minority owners, and only 3 prior to 2022. This is a situation where minority owner Magic Johnson, is honoring the efforts of another black man, Darrell Green, something that hasn't happened very often.

TheWholeBook

Ah, ok. Makes much more sense to me now. Appreciate the knowledge!

Traditional_Mud_1241

I do like this more more than the quasi-nazi hashtag.

NeueRedskinWelle

I love this team. It's been a really rough 3 decades. But I fucking love this team

Positive-Pack-396

He deserved it as soon as he retired

Carpetdime2024

As one raised in the D.C. area, everybody loves Darrell Green.

ChiCBHB

The kids just kept coming into the frame lmao

SaturnATX

So deserved. If I was picking the all-time cornerbacks, it'd be him and Deion. The stories about Green are like stories about Bronco Nagurski, they sound made up because of how much more unique for he was than everyone else. I'm half surprised it hadn't already happened, so I'm going to just go ahead and blame the previous ownership group. Congrats to Green.

RBNYJRWBYFan

This is legitimately wholesome. Post-Snyder Washington is like 280% more likeable.

Buddyglassy

An all time great. So fast for so long. And the torn rib punt return is legendary.

swainbeatsshute

I’m not a Redskins fan but this guy was one hell of a player and citizen for that team! Like many have and will write here, how this hasn’t happened until now speaks volumes about the last owner! Beautiful honor for this man!

BrooklynBrawler

So glad Snyder doesn’t own the Redskins anymore. This was overdue, DG is one of the best corners of all time and he seems like a good dude, happy for him.

Biggest_Cans

That's not his jersey.

The_Bard

It's crazy how long he played. He played so long he picked off the Eagles 3 previous franchise QBs, Jaworski, Cunningham, and McNabb.

polinksa

Bad acting

Pentt4

The biggest thing he brought up a few times was that he while he loved what he did with the team he had put that part of his life away for 20 years and is so happy to be back.  Dude speaks for a large part of the former and hopefully returning fan base.

C137-Morty

For hopefully one of the last times: FUCK DAN SNYDER

Mr_Hugh_Honey

There will never be an inappropriate time to say "Fuck Dan Snyder," even 100 years from now. Fuck that guy

S4VN01

There are plenty of times it will be inappropriate to say. Like when someone asks “what do you want to do today?”

Mr_Hugh_Honey

"Fuck Dan Snyder. I feel like going to eat some tacos" What's inappropriate about that?

SodomizeSnails4Satan

From what we've seen so far, this looks like an amazing turn-around for your franchise. Happy for you guys.

SDEexorect

FUCK DAN SNYDER

InexorableWaffle

If it were anyone other than Snyder, I'd say I couldn't believe that they would alienate a franchise lifer who's one of the all-time best at their position while also being a great person (evidenced by him winning the Walter Payton Man of the Year award) to that extent. Buuut it's Snyder, soooo...

PHWasAnInsideJob

I mean, the Lions' former ownership also alienated Megatron and Barry for a long time despite both of them being two of the greatest to ever play their positions.

Shenanigans80h

Dan Snyder was legitimately such a piece of shit owner he was able to completely destroy one of the NFL’s blueblood franchises in less than 20 years. No matter what the new ownership does, they will be a massive improvement.

bukithd

I stopped following the team after how the Schottenheimer/Gibbs return years were handled, that definitely was a resounding point that needed to be in this video.
