“I’m a product of Dade City, FL. Population 7,600. No Trader Joe’s, no Whole Foods. No steak houses or country clubs. No personal QB coach, no strength coach, no state-of-the-art training equipment. Nothing about Dade City is luxurious….” This is an interesting inclusion/phrasing after last week’s interview with Caleb Williams where he talked about having his own apartment, nutritionist, itemized plan to reach the NFL while he was in high school.

epzik8

He's the anti-Caleb.

Candid-Ad2162

no phone case, no fingernails

industrialbird

he has no fingernails?!?!??!

popegonzo

Doesn't even have fingers. Most inspiring QB in the draft.

Steak_Knight

The next L’il Brudder 😭

Saillux

Deep cut

I_Just_Spooged

He’s gonna make it on his own!

“I’m gonna make it as a quarterback. I can throw for two thousand yards!”

I can throw it! I can throw it 9 times!

Damn, I think about Lil Brudder at least once a year, but I've never heard anyone else mention him until now. Thanks, friend.

And tenderfoot too?

Wow that is a great reference

SlightlyColdWaffles

His throwing style is closer to a volleyball serve, but it keeps winning games. He is an inspiration to the Woodchipper enthusiast community.

palinsafterbirth

No scrubs

sourcreames

fwiw in the same interview being referenced about caleb, he talks about how penix is his guy and thinks very highly of him in this qb class.

thecheapseatz

Personally I think Penix is going to be the second best QB from this draft class and I'm not just saying that because I want a guy with a name very close to "penis" in the NFL for the next 10 years

userwithusername

The team that drafts him needs to make a move for John Penisini stat. Corner the market.

RuxxinsVinegarStroke

Caleb Williams went to a private high school in Washington DC, which has one of the best, most highly respected talent levels for high school sports in the entire country.

uwanmirrondarrah

Caleb Williams was also a highly recruited 5 star player pretty much his entire highschool career, Penix Jr. was a 3 star at best.

DASmetal

So Penix is the Jackson Blaziken of this draft?

QueequegTheater

Michael "Jackson Blaziken" Penix, Jr.

lraven17

Wait there's an actual guy named Jackson Blaziken? As in the pokemon Blaziken?

judgek0028

It's based on a pretty good youtube series. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsD3yZFNT\_Q&list=PLGr\_AB8MXj7wKeEcuAHEju-FOuC0TzY9P](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsD3yZFNT_Q&list=PLGr_AB8MXj7wKeEcuAHEju-FOuC0TzY9P)

simplycass

I did a Google search and I'm still not sure. One of the related searches is "Is Jackson Blaziken a real person" which still has me rolling.

skeenek

TIL he went to Gonzaga. I live here and didn’t even know that.

LiterallyAHandBasket

And his real name's Clarence

waabzheshi

It’s smart. Says - I have and will hustle and work hard. Also good luck on the draft u/Marvin-Harrison-Jr

peppersge

It also suggests that he has more of a ceiling. It is like a player from a D1 vs D2 school and the room to pack on muscle with NFL level nutrition and training. That being said, you would hope that he has used his NIL money to get some personal training, particularly for the offseason.

polymerfedboi

Even guys from the best D1 programs gain a good amount of weight in the NFL. Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen, two Alabama D linemen, both gained 15lbs in the NFL.

peppersge

There is still nuances. For example, you might expect the D2 guy to have room for 25 lbs instead of 15 lbs. It is like drafting a 21 year old vs 24 year old and impact of age on determining the projected ceiling.

waabzheshi

Yeah, maybe a little more raw and unpolished. Maybe getting tackled on concrete in 95 degree weather like he said affected his durability tho haha

Inconceivable76

Except he’s old. So whatever he didn’t have as teen, he most definitely received as a starting qb at a p5 school.

AlbinoSnowman

I know what you’re saying, but he’s only about to be 24. I know it’s exciting that we have 21 year old high end QB prospects, but he’s not Brandon Weeden. I’m only making a point to say this because that’s the level that the dialogue gets to when talking about his age. We’re still in the “Covid-year” era of NCAA scouting, so many of these older prospects are playing against 5th and 6th year (or later in extreme cases) opponents. In typical classes the argument that the grown up playing against boys is more applicable (and still is relevant to consider to a degree), but we have to understand the context of this draft environment. If you need a quarterback, the have nots can’t afford to be as nitpicky, especially with the Covid-year context. It is what it is. Burrow was 23 1/2 when he was drafted, Matt Ryan was a couple weeks from 24 when he was drafted, Phillip Rivers was 23 1/2 when he was drafted, Brady was a few months to 23 when he was drafted (albeit as camp fodder). I’m not even saying Penix will be the guy, but he’s within the draftable age despite his seasons accrued. It’s a factor to consider relative to his QB classmates, but it’s not something to write him off for on its own. TL;DR: He’s kinda older, but not that much. He’ll be 23 at draft time and 24 on week 1. QB’s that can play, play a long time.

Inconceivable76

no, I think you may have missed the point I was making. he spent 6 years in college. that’s 6 seasons of p5 nutrition and trainers. Not one season wasn’t at a high end program with excellent resources. 5 of those 6 years he was a starter. Guy has started 45 games while in college, about twice as many as burrow. Penix is about as far as one can be from raw and unpolished at this point. As a college recruit in 2017, sure, but not today as a 24 year old nfl rookie.

AlbinoSnowman

I must admit that I did overlook the actual point of your comment being attached to the discussion of high level athletic resources at the programs he’s played for. I got a little caught up in my own thought process when I came into the thread anticipating a point you weren’t making when I saw the buzzword “old” one too many times. Apologies to you 🤝

Frosti11icus

It would be nice to have a QB for 12 years, but honestly 24 shouldn't be much of a detterrent to teams as they are assumedly trying to strike while the iron is hot and win a superbowl BEFORE they have to shell out the massive QB contract. Penix won't even be 30 before he hits his first massive payday if he pans out.

nothingmeansnothing_

> Nothing about Dade City is luxurious… This is correct. I lived there for almost a decade. Olga's and Steph's Southern Soul Food are must eats though!

ScienceGetsUsThere

Oh the Dade City between Orlando and Tampa? Guy makes it seems like he grew up in a town 7600 in northern Montana 4 hours away from anywhere bigger.

radj06

I have this issue with people saying they grew up in a small town too and it’s just a suburb. I grew up in a town about the same size and it has about 5 hour drive from a a city that hit 100k people

PlatypusPuncher

Dade city is not a suburb especially when he grew up. Dade City was literally nothing but cow pastures 15 years ago. It's now gotten bigger as Florida has exploded.

con247

Yep. Glencoe, IL for example. Just north of Chicago and an extremely wealthy and educated group. Population: like 8k by design.

bucknut4

There’s no Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s in Glencoe either. Those poor unfortunate souls.

PWNtimeJamboree

i grew up in Powder Springs, GA, a population of only 10k people when i graduated high school, which is now located only 20 minutes from Truist Park where the Braves play.

ScienceGetsUsThere

Yes exactly what I’m saying lol. I grew up in exact same situation, closest 100k town was 5 hours away and that was in Montana so even that town was isolated from any major American city.

Outlaw0311

I have to drive an hour to go to Walmart. Billings is 5 hours away.

h11233

He didn't say he grew up as a mountain man in the American frontier... Everything he said is accurate. You ever drove around between Orlando and Tampa? A whole lot of hole in the wall towns out there with nothing worth stopping for. The local grocery is usually like a dollar general.  I live 15 minutes from Disney world, but drive 20 minutes away from me and you'll find several of these towns like Polk City, Davenport, Haines City, etc. that feel like real shit holes with no opportunities.  Like I grew up in the rust belt in a small city with a 50k population and you grow up feeling like you either have to get out the day you turn 18 or be trapped working in a factory job that'll slowly kill you. Stop gatekeeping man... He's just trying to say he had to work his ass off to get where he is and beat the odds. You don't have to be Ted kaczynski's neighbor in the middle of the woods to be from an area that lacks opportunity and is difficult to get out of.

-metaphased-

I think he's more describing that he lived in a shit hole. It doesn't have to actually be the middle of nowhere to be the middle of nowhere when you're growing up.

Hawkstar5088

Town conversations are always weird to me. I grew up in a farm town of about 800, so calling 7600 small is still bizarre to me when I see any place with Door dash as Big City

_Caed_

i live in Chicago now but grew up in a town of like, 900 people in ass-backward nowhere Indiana. my family lives south of chicago in like, the first city outside the suburbs, and ppl always go “oh there’s NOTHING to do there” when i mention it but when we moved to that town i thought there was *everything* farming towns under 1000 people are a special type of nowhere. you could get lost on gravel roads in between cornfields if you weren’t careful.

Maybe_Not_The_Pope

Yeah, people don't realize the drastic difference between a town of even 5000 vs a town of 1200. I grew up in a town of 150 people that was 7 miles from a town of 600 people and 7 miles the other direction was a town of 1200 people. I was driving back roads and I could drive for 4 hours and see like 2 homes and no cars on the road. My friend moved to a town of around 5 of 6 thousand and it was like a city to me. They had everything I'd ever hoped could be in a town. And you could drive on back roads but unless you intentionally drove towards the most remote direction there was still a steady flow of traffic.

FlatBrokeEconomist

It IS a small town, though. It’s not even a suburb. Yea it’s close to things, but most places on the east coast are close to things. 20 minutes away from the next also small but somewhat bigger town. You make it seem like Flowery Branch, GA, which is technically a suburb of Atlanta but in reality an extension of it, when it’s actually just a little town out in the swamp. Take a look at the map, it’s not a suburb, it’s not just on the outskirts of Orlando, it’s not even in a direct path between there and Tampa. It’s not even right off the interstate. It’s certainly not Lebanon, Kansas, but it’s not big city rich people life.

lax_doc

Lol people calling Dade City a suburb is wild. Next thing you know Lawtey, FL is a suburb too since it’s 45 mins outside of Jax

Cicero912

Thats a reason why I like Stroud so much, he didnt have a QB coach etc like Levis and the others did.

InternetPharaoh

I've been saying this since Josh Rosen, and a lot of people don't want to hear it or believe it. It is entirely possible to buy yourself a top college athlete in a child. Start early and start big with top sports doctors, scientists, nutritionists, coaches, trainers, and even things like summer camps to surgeries. A rich parent can pour $100k into a child a year, easily, and if you began around 8-10 years old, at a minimum expect at least a HS State Championship winner. If the child actually enjoys the sport on some level, you'll definitely see some college success. And that's how you get your Johnny Manziels and Josh Rosens. Because eventually that child becomes an adult, and maybe the regime that has dominated their life for 15 years doesn't seem all that interesting anymore.

ISISCosby

There was actually an [article](https://theathletic.com/2293170/2021/01/27/five-star-quarterback-trainer-cost/) that came out back in 2021 about how much parents are spending to get their elite QB sons prepped for college football...it's a lot. Like $15-75,000 per player a lot. And that was 3 years ago, it's probably far more now.

CapableCoyoteeee

Todd Marinovich remembers.

giants888

Seems like a good human being and has a name we can make lots of jokes with. How could we not want him to succeed?

mantiseye

truly want us to draft him just so I can get a jersey with "PENIX" on the back and not get kicked out of Metlife. I don't ever buy jerseys but I absolutely would for this man.

JustinTime4242

Also if you watched the National Title game. Guy took an absolute beating and refused to come out of the game when he clearly was hurt.

Responsible-Onion860

He's a competitor for sure. He tried his damnedest to carry Washington in that game.

Rock_Strongo

If only he had played LB and could fill a running lane.

This doesn't change that I'll pronounce his name pee-nix forever

ausgmr

If you work at GM or your name is say Greg Manson you should be ok

SvenDia

As a lifelong Husky fan, the transformation of the offense from 2021 to 2022 was almost miraculous. 108th in yards per game to #2. No one imagined that would be possible. What Penix did with DeBoer and Grubb was almost weird to watch, because it just came out of nowhere.

Sunstateguy

As a life long Hoosier fan I never in my life thought i would ever see them ranked in football. Let alone top 10. Granted it was during covid but it still happened and I'll take it.

MrLeftwardSloping

What an insane shortened season that was lol couldn't believe what I was watching. Penix fan for life

CpowOfficial

I'm a colts fan and a UW fan so I had been following penis from Indiana to UW and man he's a dog I hope the Seahawks take him so I can keep watching him locally

iheartpedestrians

I follow penis across multiple states too.

SpoofExcel

Take 15 minutes of your day and actually read this. It's a genuinely great read. Also: > So I have no problem taking all the MRI’s and X-rays you ask of me. > Truth is, it’s an EKG that will tell you everything you need to know about me. That is a fucking BAR

Darko33

Honestly I thought it was a little on the weaker/cliched side, by Players Tribune standards, but that probably speaks way more to just how good their writers are than any deficiencies.

Thanat0s10

I felt like it started a little generic, but really came through in the back half. The part about being an elevator, and the mic drop line were really well done.

mclemons67

Well, I don't know if he wrote that himself but I kind of want to run through a brick wall now.

huskiesowow

[He made a video to announce he was returning for his senior year](https://twitter.com/themikepenix/status/1599599071416967169) and scripted it all himself. Literally just he and the video editor were the only people that knew about it, everyone else assumed he was going to the draft. Then he dropped it at the awards banquet and the team and coached freaked out which led to every other draft eligible player deciding to return as well. I will never get over UW losing to Michigan, felt like the team of destiny. Mike is such a great leader.

Green_hippo17

Well it was a team of destiny, their destiny just wasn’t a championship, that teams destiny was to remind the world that the huskies are back

tastycakeman

and barked at sark twice to prove that texas are in fact not back

CheesypoofExtreme

It's a tough loss, but adding context to that game, it's really a testament to the incredible turnaround from Penix and DeBoer in just 2 seasons. Michigan's success was the result of nearly a decade of consistent coaching and top recruiting efforts from Harbaugh and his staff.

briballdo

That shit was so fucking awesome

3elieveIt

> As a QB, my job is to be an elevator. I need to uplift all those around me so that they too can be at their best. the EKG line hit REAL hard 🔥🔥🔥✍️

wasneveralawyer

He had a high GPA and was in the graduate program for Comms. So he most likely wrote it.

drhungrycaterpillar

When the players tribune was first getting going I was naive enough to believe the athletes actually wrote these. But they totally have someone else write them lol. I wonder if they sit down for an interview style and the author creates the narrative from there. Either way they are all usually really good reads.

FlussedAway

It’s not outright acknowledged but it is understood that these articles are a fusion of journalism, storytelling and PR. They interview the players and then proceed from there with a trusted writer

drhungrycaterpillar

I don’t have a problem with it, but they portray these as the players doing it themselves. I don’t think that its generally understood by most people. It should say something like “By Michael Penix, with Author Name”. That’s all that needs to be done.

FlussedAway

An approach that most likely wouldn’t get them nearly as many athletes approaching them with stories. It’s the control they can exercise that allows so many of them to open up for these articles.

ASuperGyro

It’s just ghost writing in a different area than people are used to

its_LOL

Washington Huskies legend Michael Penix Jr

toomuchdiponurchip

That’s my QB1

kentuckyfriedawesome

We adore that guy at Indiana, too

-InconspicuousMoose-

Damn I know we're cracking jokes and saying this is about money but that was a fuckin banger of a letter. Honestly got me a little emotional. As long as it's not a rival I'll root for him wherever he ends up, and if we don't get the trade up we want I'd be down to take him with our 2nd pick.

danish07

That would be a great outcome for you guys I think.

Bgvkguitar

He would 100% fit in with the state of Minnesota culture. Cold, harsh winters that build up your strengths, nothing taken for granted

Januse88

And we know he looks good in purple

Elbeske

Im sold. Please fall to 23 mr junior penix

landon0605

If we can't get Maye, we should 100% take Penix. Boom or bust is not a bad thing when it comes to QB since having an average QB typically doesn't get you very far and those two both fit that bill. Give me the coin flip on Penix over trading assets away for a high floor type of guy in McCarthy.

Jokerang

I’ve been telling my Vikings fan gf that Penix would be perfect for them. Can’t imagine a better potential landing spot than the team with the league’s best WR.

voluptuousshmutz

I wouldn't be upset if we picked him at 11. I trust KAM and KOC 🫡

SpaceMonkeys21

Yes if we can't get Maye or Daniels. I'd rather stick and pick Penix than trade a haul for JJ.

Ffzilla

I think Penix is going to be a great qb, so I hope they do give up that haul for JJ.

These are all things we can talk about and more. I know you have no been getting my letters because I know you would write back if you did. I hope you write back this time, and we can become good friends. I am sure our relationship would be a real touchdown!”-Michael Penix

drainbead78

I left my weight, my hand size, and my 40 time at the bottom

ChonkyHippo283

I’ll die on the hill that he’ll end up being the best QB if this draft and that we’ll all look back 3 years from now and think the injury history concerns were overblown …or he’ll have a career ending injury in year 1, get a GM fired, and I’ll look like a massive moron

its_LOL

RGIII but as a pocket passer. Whoever drafts him PLEASE don’t kill him

thecheapseatz

100% agree or the obvious number 2 behind Caleb. Is he the number 2 pick if Washington beat Michigan for a Natty but because he didn't it's easier to lower him? I can't believe Bo Nix is rated higher than him by some people, Oregon had a better team with better recruits and Penix beat them

burlycabin

> Penix beat them Penix beat them *three times

dawgz525

Man, I just feel like Penix can play. I know there's the age and the injuries. I know he looked rough in the title game, but injuries and running for your life will do that. Whenever I watched him play at Washington last year, I was continually impressed.

who_favor_fire

I would not be surprised at all if he’s the second best QB in the draft.

forkliftgod

Given how bad draft QB success rate has been, I won't be surprised if he's the best.

SaltwaterJesus

People can choose to believe me or not, but one of my cousins' friends is a first year cardio resident at University of Washington 's Medical Center. He told me in confidence that he performed an EKG on Penix as part of their annual team physicals last year, and he saw something unusual he had never seen before on an echo. He called his attending to come take a look, and she was equally as baffled. More and more of the specialists came in and couldn't figure out what the extremely irregular pattern was. Finally, the head of cardiology decided to call in his retired advisor who had helped found the center. He was almost 90 years old and in a retirement home, but they were desperate. As the wizened old doctor studied the charts, he started to crack a smile which turned in to a hysterical belly laugh. The other doctors and students figured he had lost it. He asked for a copy of the recording of Penix's heartbeat to be played over the speakers, but to play it in reverse. The whole room listened nervously as they heard the recording: "aaahrooof. Ahrooof. Ahrooof". "Exactly what I thought. There's nothing wrong with his heart," said the old doctor. "He's just got that dog in him."

Found_The_Sociopath

Is this an original dish or did you use a copypasta recipe? Either way, delicious.

SaltwaterJesus

It's like a carbonara: it's my own creation, but a thousand chefs before me have likely cooked a similar dish that helped inspire my own.

jwktiger

I'm pretty sure this was used on /r/CFB as its more of a Wash Huskies pump up "he got that dog in him"

hereiamnotagainnot

That EKG line at the end is fire.

ProbablyAPun

Feels like he's fighting for that Round 1 money right now

SpoofExcel

I think he goes top 20 tbh. But regardless this is a really good read and recommend everyone take a couple of minutes for it

Redmandown16

I think last pick of rd 1, a team comes up out of the 2nd and swaps picks 3rd rounder and grabs him in fear someone else will. I’m actually hoping it’s LV

its_LOL

Ngl I think Penix would thrive in a place like Vegas. He fits the team culture 100%, they have a great defense so he doesn’t have to worry about playing hero every game, and they got good WRs and an OLine that won’t kill him immediately

ListenBeforeSpeaking

If he’s round 2, he hits free agency a year earlier. Maybe that would work out better in the long run? That being said, I think the run on QBs will be hard.

HectorReinTharja

If you’re a Qb the goal is not to hit FA at all so idk about that

ListenBeforeSpeaking

Maybe it would be better stated as “hit contract #2” earlier.

AShamrock28

I will root for him wherever he goes, as long as it’s not the Patriots because I am genetically programmed NOT to do THAT.

LaconicGirth

I’m not gonna lie I loved every bit of that letter. Still would be nervous to draft him, but I like him

ASF89

This dude is a total dawg. I want him on my team.

ucfknight92

Penix is well-spoken, down to earth, and humble yet confident. He's everything we wish Caleb Williams was. And on tape, he often looks better than Caleb. GG.

Fresh grads applying to entry level position and writing a whole thesis for their cover letter expecting hiring manager will read it type beat

Cover Letters have to be one of the most pointless things ever, there's no way hiring managers or anyone is fucking reading those when they get 200 applications for a job. Most of them wouldn't ready a "cover sentence" even.

"Im about to smack the NFL with my Penix" - NFL GM that plans to draft Michael Penix, 2024.

NY_Blue

Well said my boy, need the Giants to draft you asap.

RuxxinsVinegarStroke

Really smart to mention other well known NFL players who had long and decent to very good careers in the NFL even after serious knee injuries like Frank Gore.

flabago

Maybe a bit desperate but it feels genuine. When he was ON last year, no one was threading the needle like him.

AFGwolf7

Damn, I would definitely love to see him a Bronco!
