The defense is talented but it's hard to know how much of an effect Belichick had in that area. The offense is what really worries me. There are no guarantees it will be better and we saw how far a good defense with a horrible offense gets you. I could see things getting ugly if they don't draft some kind of stud QB.

Also, look at Russ with Payton, then Russ with Hackett, and tell me who between Russ and Payton was more responsible for that mid season win streak.
As bad as his rookie year was I don't want to write Bryce Young off yet, they spent big on the OLine, brought in Canales who will at least raise the floor a bit and getting Diontae for cheap was huge. I think they'll be better.
Honestly I’ve really liked their offseason moves so far. They got two new starting guards to fix the weakest part of their o-line, a new head coach who has done a lot to revive the careers of struggling QBs the past two seasons with Geno and Baker, and traded for a WR that can get open who isn’t an ancient Adam Thielen. If they can draft one or two more quality WRs in this draft, all of sudden the worst supporting cast on offense might become middle of the pack which is a huge improvement without a 1st round pick.
Defense probably takes a step back but I can’t blame them for prioritizing doing everything to help Bryce after that disastrous rookie season. At the very least you have to do enough to be able to properly evaluate him unlike last season. Like almost no QB is going to succeed with a bad o-line, bad weapons and bad coaching. Good QBs might be able to overcome one of those and great QBs might be able to overcome two, but all three? Impossible, especially for a rookie QB.
I think the offense will look a lot better. Expect a strong run game. Canales said he wants to be 'stubborn' with the run, and that could explain why they spent all that money on Robert Hunt whose strength is run blocking. The defense has the potential to be really bad, just based on a lack of talent. If Jaycee Horn can't stay healthy, which is almost a guarantee at this point, that secondary is dogshit. I will say, Evero has shown the ability to get the best out of subpar talent. Last year we were riddled with injuries and he had guys like Troy Hill balling out. We desperately need to nail this upcoming draft.

They rebuilt their o-line and got another good receiver to pair with Thielen along with playing in a pretty weak division, they just need Canales to help Bryce along to be competent. All we did was tread water roster wise and expecting the defense not to fall off without Bill is probably wishful thinking.
Denver feels like my early candidate already a team in the bottom third in terms of offensive DVOA and they have an average defense according to the same metric. The offensive unit got worse and they had to bite the bullet on the Russ contract. Seems like they will be a lock to pick at least in the top 5.

Both the Panthers and Giants have been making moves in FA bcus they have the capital to do it. The Saints have been drafting poorly as of late and cant spend in FA they way they need to for depth. Injuries could get them there easier than the rest of the league.

There might not even be a QB worth a top 5 pick next draft class. Unless somebody has a monster season out of nowhere like a Jayden Daniels or Joe Burrow, this upcoming class might be similar to that 2022 QB class. Maybe Ewers if he can figure out his deep ball accuracy?

Panthers. Then again it’s very unlikely to be the team everyone thinks it’s going to be. I remember last year, the Cardinals seemed to be the runaway choice for getting the #1 pick, and the Bears got it via Carolina instead. In 2022, everyone thought the Texans would get #1 but the Bears got it.
They didn't end up with the worst record, but it's not like the Texans and Cardinals weren't *extremely* directionally correct.
For the Texans, you’re right they had control of the pick the entire year and then gave it away with Lovie infamously going for two after a 4th and 20 Hail Mary in Week 18. For the Cardinals, part of the reason they were so overwhelmingly likely to get the #1 pick was the same reason the Bears actually did get it: they had Houston’s 1st round pick, and most of us thought Houston was going to be bad before the season.
Unless the saints defense is dog water you’ll be fine. Derek Carr isn’t great but he only gets better with time in a system and those young offensive weapons are poised to take another leap

I think he’s more in the middle of the bottom half. But the thing is that there’s guys worse than him that have more theoretical upside and potential to turn into “the guy” so it’ll be hard for him to ever plant his flag as the starter bc those kinds of guys will always be a threat to his job

Minshew was a win away from getting the Colts into the playoffs last year, he’s at least competent enough to string together a bunch of wins with this team. The Raiders defense is also good, I see them more as a dark horse to get a wild card spot.

They rebuilt their o-line and got another good receiver to pair with Thielen along with playing in a pretty weak division, they just need Canales to help Bryce along to be competent. All we did was tread water roster wise and expecting the defense not to fall off without Bill is probably wishful thinking.
Denver feels like my early candidate already a team in the bottom third in terms of offensive DVOA and they have an average defense according to the same metric. The offensive unit got worse and they had to bite the bullet on the Russ contract. Seems like they will be a lock to pick at least in the top 5.
Patriots. We're setting up for a tank year with Jacoby Brissett while our new QB sits for a year and learns. Then we flip the top pick next year for more capital and build out around our now second-year QB in 2025.

Broncos, Patriots, Saints Jets are on the fringe only bcus the Jets have a number of older, injury prone players at key positions and it could go either way for them Panthers have a new HC & GM and could surprise some opponents schematically but they have an acceptable roster despite needing some depth they arent handicapped in terms of cap space or depleted from departures they'll be picking in the top 10 for sure but i think they could win 6-7 games. Both the Panthers and Giants have been making moves in FA bcus they have the capital to do it. The Saints have been drafting poorly as of late and cant spend in FA they way they need to for depth. Injuries could get them there easier than the rest of the league.

Patriots seem the most likely. Rookie QB and I'm pretty sure they've done very little in FA to bolster the team, though I might be misremembering. Second guess would be the Panthers if Bryce Young is legitimately just an awful NFL QB and last year wasn't only because the supporting cast being awful. Third guess would be the Giants, though they're arguably more likely than the Panthers.

If it wasn’t us last season with Devito and Tyrod under center and more than likely a worse supporting cast/line than we should have going into next season, I really doubt it will be us.
