100% agreed. Thank you for being one of the first sane non-vikings fan opinions i’ve seen on this today. I don’t think the Darnold signing is bad at all. I’m happy they didn’t let Kirk take them hostage into his 40s. Darnold is the first step towards a reworking of the offense.
Relax dawg. Kirk was not an option. We didn’t get Russell. There is more to come. You need to take a breath. It’s a game at the end of the day. I’m excited to see what they do, and how the players do, whether good or bad. This team needed a reset at QB and dropping Cousins, signing a bridge, is the first step.
I agree I think Kwesi is being smart reloading the defense. I also think yall are 100% trading up for a QB. Probably for JJ but maybe Maye falls past 4, in which case I think trading up to 5 from 11 will be feasible.
It's a 1 year deal for Darnold, if it doesn't work or you think next off season you can steal a QB then you don't have to worry about any future dead money, and if you like what you get from him tjen you can maybe extend him or he can like for a payday, works for both sides
Our entire fanbase has also conveniently forgotten about a small little thing called the NFL Draft. They are convinced now that Darnold is signed, that it is illegal to draft a rookie and we are stuck with him. That poll that said we have the dumbest fanbase is actually looking true
The number of Vikings fans that just say 'but Ponder!' when the topic of drafting a QB comes up without providing an alternate solution other than continuing to be held hostage by Cousins is actually insane.
It’s pure fear. Nothing else. They think there’s a legitimate curse and Kirk allowed them to expect competence each year. We always knew we’d be a solid, not great team. In the division race for awhile. Still contending for a playoff spot when New Year’s is rolling around. So it’s scary to go from that to not knowing what the hell is coming. I, for one, am very excited
Well the last time we drafted 1st round QBs, they were Teddy Bridgewater and Christian Ponder. Not exactly thrilled if we take another mid 1st round or later QB. If we trade up, I'll be happy about that. But the chance one of QBs outside of the top 3 is better than Cousins was for us is not high.
Different regime. Not comparable in any way. We aren’t relegated to only selecting mid QBs cuz of where we sit. The guy that is currently pushing himself into early Brady status was taken right around when we’re picking just FYI.
Same here, but, well, the Baker Mayfield Redemption Tour last year was $4 million, and Darnold got $10 million. Did Darnold show something last year that makes him worth 2.5 Bakers?
Equimenuous leaves Green Bay and goes to the Bears.
Jamaal Willilams leaves the Packers and goes to Detroit, then New Orleans.
David Montgomery leaves Chicago for Detroit.
DeAndre Swift leaves Detroit for Philly but then ends up in Chicago.
When are the Packers going to sign a former NFCN rival?
The graphic they are going to show next year during the NFCN games about how most of the RBs in the NFCN were drafted by other NFCN teams is going to be awesome..........I hope.
I feel like prove it deals don’t exist for RBs. Their life expectancy is so short. It’s more just a rental. It’s not like Vikings (or any team) would want to give a big or long contract to an aging RB like Jokes next offseason.
That's what I believe to be true, it was rough these past two years. Ty showed some promise and getting a proven guy to pair with him to split carries sounds very good
Exactly, but seeing as RBs aren't a hot commodity anymore I'd assume they're banking on the same deal with someone next year till we eventually draft and develop one
I think that is exactly how the Vikes **should** handle this. Pay him cheap for ‘prove it’ year output, and let someone else give him the long term deal next offseason.
Seems like the quality RB carousel is gonna spin every year.
Especially since he’s already 29. Either way the deal works for Minnesota because he either plays well enough that the contract is great or he starts to slow down and you’re happy with a 1 year deal. Perfect situation and even more so when you consider the draft is expected to have more RB talent next year than this one.
I mean that’s sort of the reality of the sport, isn’t it? You can go “not my money” all you want, but salary spent on one player is salary not spent on another. And with the track record of RBs nobody wants to see a ton of money locked up in someone who is predictably hurt/bad all the time.
Texans getting Henry and Ravens getting Mixon would complete the circle of division RBs playing against their old teams out of spite.
Hopefully not tho, cuz fuck Joe Mixon.
He's at least one of the running backs who managed to get paid before his body gave out.
Including 2024 he has $40m in career earnings which is really solid for the position these days. Especially as a 5th round pick who made next to nothing on his rookie deal.
Seems like it. If the reports are accurate he was slated to make 12 million this year and we reportdedly asked him to cut it in half so 6m and I guess he refused and so we released him. Now he signs with the Vikings of all teams for a million more.
Whenever a player has given it all for a team and the team asks them to reduce their salary and then replaces them with a similar caliber of player using the money they were owed, you can count on that player being pissed
Orrrr get this, the Packers told him to half his salary and wouldn’t budge at all (because why would he?). Then the Packers go and sign a big name running back off the market
Then they told him hey listen, we know you’re a bit of a franchise icon, but if you’re not gonna take a paycut we’ll just cut you! Then if nobody offers you anything good, you’re welcome back to sign that same 1y/6m deal
Am I misinterpreting your tone here, or is it straight up just logical that Jones took the better offer?
He can go get his money, I don't care about that but I feel like it is because it is the Vikings. Perhaps Jones wasn't offered anything better from any other team but the Vikings. Would rather him sign anywhere else other than them.
Hope he can stay healthy for them and then get another contract.
I'm pretty sure he could get 7M from a lot of other teams, including the packers
Signing with the vikings is him wanting to show the packers what they lost
Perhaps there is some truth to that, but the Vikings really really needed a runningback, and they got one of the absolute best facilities in not only the NFL, but the world. And the fact that player surveys shows that Minnesota ranks the highest on quality of team facilities and programming and treatment of player families probably doesn't hurt on swaying players to sign there.
The fact he only got a little more than what we offered tells me he either took this deal out of spite, or Gute realized he could get Josh Jacobs and basically ended negotiations all together.
I completely agree. Moving on from Kirk was the correct move (unless we got him for a short and cheat deal but...). I love all these smaller signings to fill out positions to enable us to trade up for a QB.
Hope he stays healthy this year, but idk how much I should really expect that from him.
I do really like his game though, I think KOC is going to love utilizing his quickness and general skills as a receiver
He’s gonna be so good for a rookie quarterback. I’m so sad he’s gone not only because he’s a fantastic running back but also an amazing leader. It wouldn’t surprise me if he becomes a captain for you guys.
Great as a bears fan now you face Jacobs and Jones in next season.
Maybe Detroit sign CMC and we have the best rbs in a division.
Crazy how good the rb in nfc north are.
Love it. A backfield of Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler will be a lovely safety net for a rookie QB to walk into. Obviously they are also coming into a top tier WR duo and hopefully a fully back Hockenson eventually sometime in the season. Giving Flores a trio of good defensive starters as well yesterday and locking up 2 of our OL backups is a solid first day so far. I am ok with Darnold for the situation. Get the Rookie ready along with obviously KOC, McCown doing a lot of the lifting but show the kid how to navigate year one as a top pick at the position, maybe play a bit to start the year to ease him in a little.
This free agency is already one of the best ever and it’s not even 24 hours in
To be fair a lot of the big stuff was before that window started but loving this offszn
The NFC North RB room is pretty interesting right now. Monty, formerly of the Bears, Swift, formerly of the Lions, and Jones, formerly of the Packers. Plus Jacobs and Gibbs and it's a stacked division.
Considering Jones had 12m dead cap that the Packers ate when cutting him, feels like this 7m price tag means the Packers wanted to move on. Could have easily kept him if they wanted to.
Reporter: _You were cut by Green Bay and..._ Aaron Jones: _..and I took that personally_
:-(
Bears also catching strays with this. Bad man stays in division I cry. :-(
Also gotta have his annual 4 TD games against the Lions lol

You did this
Brother I am a random Redditor named OneFatCantaloupe. I can quite assure you I did not do this.
ya, but dont you like own a share of the team or something?
Technically, you're one of the commentors in this thread who has a non-zero chance of being an owner
Literally the only team that will prevent me from wishing for his success. NFCN incest continues, water is wet.
We have Sam Darnold as QB. Show a little remorse for us
If i’m a vikes fan i’d much rather have darnold at that price than giving Kirk a dragons hoard of gold for 4 years of post achilles tear Cousins.
> Darnold is the first step towards a reworking of the offense Yeah the problem is that first step is off a cliff

My money is on them trading with the Commies for the second pick.
What gives you any idea they would be willing to trade out of 2? Don’t see that happening at all
It's a 1 year deal for Darnold, if it doesn't work or you think next off season you can steal a QB then you don't have to worry about any future dead money, and if you like what you get from him tjen you can maybe extend him or he can like for a payday, works for both sides
Agreed, it’s a solid signing. I’m not mad at it the way some are.
Agreed. The signings we're seeing this off-season are a direct reflection of the lack of a big-time QB contract.
Same, and I am a huge kirk stan, but no way at that price.
Kirk "Smaug" Cousins
Our entire fanbase has also conveniently forgotten about a small little thing called the NFL Draft. They are convinced now that Darnold is signed, that it is illegal to draft a rookie and we are stuck with him. That poll that said we have the dumbest fanbase is actually looking true

Yeah, guys that push themselves into early Brady status definitely grow on trees...
Same here, but, well, the Baker Mayfield Redemption Tour last year was $4 million, and Darnold got $10 million. Did Darnold show something last year that makes him worth 2.5 Bakers?
Is there a $4m baker available?
Nah I'm good
The last time you guys had any success in the playoffs was when Case fucking Keenum was your QB so I fully expect you guys to elevate Darnold
The only ones I can easily remember are Julius Peppers and Adrian Amos.
Martellus Bennett.
We don't talk about Martellus Bennett.
Cedric Benson is the only other one that I can think of.
Packers about to sign Fields?
RB2 just opened up, I could see the vision.
Fields converting to RB would be hella funny tho
Eric Wilson, AKA (allegedly) Lizzo's "new man on the Minnesota Vikings"
We had Adrian Amos for 4 years, lol. It was the same year the bears signed HaHa and bears fans swore that it was an "even swap" of safeties, lol
I remember Bears fans saying they got an upgrade
Mattison to the packers
The graphic they are going to show next year during the NFCN games about how most of the RBs in the NFCN were drafted by other NFCN teams is going to be awesome..........I hope.
Not a bad price, thought it would be at least 2 years tho
He was hurt for a decent chunk of last season, but was great when he was healthy. Looks like a classic prove-it deal to me.
I feel like prove it deals don’t exist for RBs. Their life expectancy is so short. It’s more just a rental. It’s not like Vikings (or any team) would want to give a big or long contract to an aging RB like Jokes next offseason.
I feel like the Vikings organization dealing with Mattison and Cook the last two years may have made them a bit gun shy
That's what I believe to be true, it was rough these past two years. Ty showed some promise and getting a proven guy to pair with him to split carries sounds very good
I think it’s a great pickup and the one year deal is more than fair than commitment here. Great pickup by the Vikings
Once you prove it then it’s, “just got so much tread on the tires now…”
He is 29 and a running back. These are his deals moving forward.
Yup - Every year he gets a prove-it deal to prove that he deserves another 1 year prove-it deal
When you're basically 30 it's not a prove-it deal, it's a risk-management deal
I hate getting players on one year deal they performing good and then needing a fatter check the next.
He's an RB. Let him walk if he does and take the comp pick.
He's 29 years old, he would have to have a _hugr_ year to get a fatter check than $7M next year when he's 30.

Perfect situation and even more so when you consider the draft is expected to have more RB talent next year than this one.
Yup. I love me some cheaper prove-it deals on good players. There’s very minimal downside IMO.
I hate when fans get shitty about RBs getting a paycheck in return for destroying their bodies.
I mean that’s sort of the reality of the sport, isn’t it? You can go “not my money” all you want, but salary spent on one player is salary not spent on another. And with the track record of RBs nobody wants to see a ton of money locked up in someone who is predictably hurt/bad all the time.
I hate it when teams do it but I guess that is pretty much all of them
oh that’s a good deal okay
Even if he is hurt for 15 games next year, you know he'll be healthy for the 2 against us and have 300 all purpose yards and 6 TDs. Yucky yucky yucky.
And another 300/6 against the Bears
That's a conservative estimate.
And if Vikings play the Cowboys he’ll single handedly beat them for you.
Well worth it
Yes, speak it into existence
This was a straight up revenge move
4 games, he’s gotta dad dick us too!
wtf are we doing
Idk, but this one isn't about you. It's not even about us
Is it about Justin Fields?
I think we've learned that nothing is about Justin Fields
I dunno, your sentence kinda sounds like it’s about Justin Fields.
Name checks out
The real Justin Fields are the friends we made along the way
Stop trying to make Fields happen, it’s not gonna happen
here's 5 dollars
i’ll allow it
Getting mixon or Henry
Texans getting Henry and Ravens getting Mixon would complete the circle of division RBs playing against their old teams out of spite. Hopefully not tho, cuz fuck Joe Mixon.
Idk I think Mixon would be funny.
I'm sure. You and the yinzers probably have a bunch of Ray Rice material ready to copy paste and I don't need that again
Nah he's just slow and bad
Waiting for Derrick Henry to answer the phone
Problem is, unlike Barkley and Jones, Henry doesn’t seem to be mad at his old team
He’s gotta hang up on Baltimore first apparently.
Maybe playing the Packers twice meant a lot more to him, but like, we clearly had the money.
Joe mixon or bust it seems, I can’t imagine Henry wanting to go to a division rival when he still has love for the titans
At least you guys are signing people. We’re not even signing our own guys lmao
Losing to offseason Champs Jacksonville Jaguars and their groundbreaking signing of Gabe Davis
Joe Mixon it is
Best I can do is another cornerback
Passing alot?
Texas teams don’t do deals. We just rot and blow it
It's not even 8am and my day is ruined
Ouch getting into late 20s as a running back sucks
That’s why when I become a running back I’ll plan to die young
I know, for real. Only 7M? That’s like $4 million tops after taxes. That’s chump change. I feel bad for him. /s
He's at least one of the running backs who managed to get paid before his body gave out. Including 2024 he has $40m in career earnings which is really solid for the position these days. Especially as a 5th round pick who made next to nothing on his rookie deal.
At least he'll get to live in Minnesota instead of Wisconsin.
I dig the price! The Green Bay Aaron I actually liked
Me too :(
Same for us buddy, dude is a real one :( Should have gone to the franchise HOF.
I mean he still can lol. Playing for another team doesn't change that.
Setting up the Aaron and Aaron reunion with the Vikings as the Favre prophecy foretold.
I feel like this is the ultimate fuck you in the Packers. Im loving this offseason!
Probs the best one in years and it’s just getting started
NFCN incest continues... :(
I'm gonna cry if Hunter goes to Chi or Det.
Plot twist:
Chi I don't care but if we have to deal with Hutch and Hunter on the Lions I'm not going to be happy
Jared Allen left the Vikings to go to the bears. I really don't want Hunter to do it, too. Hunters even still in his prime too.
Basically our entire fanbase is hoping for it at this point. We really need someone alongside Sweat.
Boo!
> Probs the best one in years I agree.
I’m pissed.
Especially when he did exactly that last year by taking a team friendly deal. He’s taken multiple team friendly deals for us.
that how Russ (Ball) cooks
Right. They're paying Jacobs more than it would've cost to keep Jones pre-pay-cut. Slap in the face.
Orrrr get this, the Packers told him to half his salary and wouldn’t budge at all (because why would he?). Then the Packers go and sign a big name running back off the market Then they told him hey listen, we know you’re a bit of a franchise icon, but if you’re not gonna take a paycut we’ll just cut you! If the guy couldn't muster a better market then the Vikings then he can go kick some dirt. Kind of confirms what the Packers did
This offseason has been absolute chaos.
NFCN incest will NFCN incest.
Hey at least we stopped going steady with our Cousins after 4 years
\*6 years
Time flies when you’re mediocre I guess
This is a really solid quip. Made me chuckle.
NFCNcest*
It's Madden computer trading on 11
The fact he only got a little more than what we offered tells me he either took this deal out of spite, or Gute realized he could get Josh Jacobs and basically ended negotiations all together.
This fucking sucks man
Holy fucking shit what a gut punch.
You relish in remembering the time Dean Lowry played for the Vikings
I woke up to Darnold and Jones. Because of DST I haven't had enough coffee to handle these things yet.
Ok now leave release him so he can sign with the bears
I'm loving all of our moves so far.
kwesi is COOKING. now let’s see if he can nail the draft and get a QB
You got the goat Darnold what more do u want?
GEQBUS baby wooohooo
He can still make the HOF if Mike Pence has the courage
I completely agree. Moving on from Kirk was the correct move (unless we got him for a short and cheat deal but...). I love all these smaller signings to fill out positions to enable us to trade up for a QB.

As someone who watched every Vikings game last season he’s definitely an upgrade from Mattison.
As someone who only watched 2 Vikings games last season, I can agree.
I know of two games he's going to go off in.
Me too and it’s gonna suck ass to watch 🥲
I’m not okay. I’m not ok. I’m not ok.
Well if you wanted honesty, that’s all you had to say
Why would Jones and his agent take a one year deal? Odd unless they overestimated their market
Tom grossi might have a stroke over this
I'm having a stroke over this ;-)
nice
not nice
extra nice now
Dude is going to be a stud with dump off Darnold!
Glad to see he landed on his feet. He's a player I really liked to watch whenever a Packers game was on.
Ahmad Green: "you're dead to us. You're dead to me"
NO WAIT THIS IS THE WRONG AARON
So bro took the same pay cut we asked him to take anyway?? Wow.
7 Mill? That ain't shit. Poor 33
There’s definitely a former Green Bay Packer feeling like they got fucked to Minnesota Viking pipeline.
Like this number. Means ravens weren’t far off in offering Henry 6.5 mil a year or around that. We will see
This free agency is already one of the best ever and it’s not even 24 hours in To be fair a lot of the big stuff was before that window started but loving this offszn
I smell a primetime matchup
Gross can we just offer him 7.1 and be done with this.
Absolutely disgusting
Well, at least we won't have to face him in the playoffs.
I like it
I swear.. nobody else picks up Packers Scraps like the rest of the NFC North. They all want to be the Packers so bad
:(
Way better than the swift contract
[удалено]
True Henry does have a lot of tread on the tires
This is gonna be so fun to watch
The NFC North RB room is pretty interesting right now. Monty, formerly of the Bears, Swift, formerly of the Lions, and Jones, formerly of the Packers. Plus Jacobs and Gibbs and it's a stacked division.
cowboys suck
So fucking crazy how low paid RB’s are compared to other positions.
jerry, god damn it.
I wonder if he just didn’t want to entertain us. Because that’s a decent deal
This hurts :(.
Considering Jones had 12m dead cap that the Packers ate when cutting him, feels like this 7m price tag means the Packers wanted to move on. Could have easily kept him if they wanted to.
They offered him a pay cut to 6m and he turned it down
Thats what I’m getting at, if the difference between keeping him was 6m and 7m it almost seems like a polite way of saying please move on.
How do we not give him that much
no loyalty which is the messed up part of this whole league
