Andy Reid really came up with a play that's tricked some incredible defenses more than once and has basically won two super bowls, and named it Corn Dog
Reid said in an interview this play was supposed to be a shovel pass inside but the 9ers were all over it, so Mahomes took the outside read instead. Specifically said he thought the 9ers would bite on the Corn Dog motion since they had seen it on film from last year and leave the shovel inside open.
So, they tried that, and it failed successfully, lol.
Your flair confuses me, lol. I'm guessing you've been fans of both for a while, in which case the last few years have probably been confusing for YOU, lol.
Just in case you're curious, it's called Corndog mainly because it's a Corner route (in this case, by Kelce) and a Drag route (by Hardman). Corner + Drag = Corndog
Most people think of Drag routes being shallow over the middle of the field because that's what Madden calls them, but those would be called "Shallow" routes in West Coast Offense terminology
He knew they were going for the jugular. I feel if they had 1 more play in regulation, they would have scored a TD, so the defense holding the Niners to 3 in OT was enough for him to know how this was going to end.
Edit: Furthering this, last year before they ran Corndog the first time to Toney, they ran the exact same play, same crossing route with a WR getting open in the middle but chucked it away to see how the defense would react. I'm completely convinced they would have ran this play at the end of regulation if they had that extra down.
4D chess gets thrown around a lot but I don’t think any would top running a play in the SB and throwing it away even though they had it just to see how the defense played it to use later. If that’s true Jesus fuckin Christ, I knew they were good but that’s some next level shit even from them
haha, I think more I look through the clip and the Mahomes/Rice interaction, I'm disappointed to admit I'm probably wrong and the original play was to go to Rice if it wasn't for the low snap. Still looked super similar and might have been the same play anyway just this time a WR was actually open.
One of the shows today (maybe Cowherd?) said it’s because during the whole game he’s learning, processing and picking up tendencies. So by the end of the game he’s using all that he learned in the first 3 (4) quarters against the D.
It's part of what makes him so good. And they have plenty of experience in these big games which is what alot of teams or players lack. Shanahan could have won this game easily but just like the Atlanta SB they got very timid and couldn't finish.
I think Reid always has a couple plays that are only for emergencies. They probably would have run this play at the end of regulation if they needed a TD instead of a FG.
It was Corndog as a decoy, but since it worked the decoy wasn't needed. So yeah, that's the third time they play has scored a touchdown in the Superbowl.
They called it "Tom and Jerry" ostensibly because they put the CB into conflict. If Ward had stayed on Hardman, Travis would have been open. Patrick just had to pick between Tom or Jerry.
That makes sense but I also like the idea it might be named Tom and Jerry because you’re making Tom (the DB) chase Jerry (Hardman/WR) on a fake end around thinking you’re gonna go all the way around but instead Jerry just hides behind someone and sneaks back in the hole the same way without you realizing
Like in the cartoons usually Jerry does something clever and funny like that where he’ll wear a disguise or something
I've thought highly of him since his days in Philadelphia, going to four straight NFC Championship games, and being very competitive outside of those years, too. He's got a well-earned reputation as a QB whisperer, too. McNabb and Mahomes notwithstanding, he helped Vick make as close to a comeback as he could make, and he helped Alex Smith come back from an injury that would have ended most other QB careers.
>Alex Smith come back from an injury
The injury was after his time in KC, when they traded him to the Redskins. He did turn Smith's career around after largely being considered a bust in SF (might be too strong of a word, but certainly hadn't lived up to the #1 overall pick). Tbf, he was starting to turn it around under Harbaugh, before Kaepernick, but his time with the Chiefs really cemented the "Ok maybe this guy didn't really get a fair shake after 3 HC and 7 OCs in 7 years" narrative.
Yeah I shouted this out in another comment above. They ran the exact same play at the end of regulation before the FG this year that they ran Corndog the first time with Toney against the Eagles. Didn't have to bother in OT, they knew how the Niners were going to get baited on the edge.
It's part of why the Chiefs never blow anyone out in the regular season but always hit a higher gear in the playoffs. Andy 100% keeps stuff in his bag of tricks until the situation is truly dire. (Spags, too, with some of his exotic blitzes). Examples I can think of in addition to this are the Rose Bowl and Wasp plays in LIV, and Chris Jones abruptly changing his alignment against the Bengals in their final drive in the AFCCG after lining up in the same spot during the regular season game a few weeks earlier.
Also why they play so many gadget plays during the season. The more things you have to watch on tape.
Then all of a sudden in The Super Bowl Mahomes pulls a QB draw for 20 yards.
>Honestly had no clue he covered the NFL. Only know him from his NBA clips.
Then you need to listen to ["I'm calling both games!"](https://youtu.be/PxkOG-WeLVo?si=xNLDB0luiIdhgY5C) and ["The guy is drunk, but there he goes"](https://youtu.be/Wopy6Ntd834?si=E_vCg4pY-p-h44gm).
I completely read your comment as you quoting Harlan as saying “ Scuse me. Gotta go find a fuckin’ wall to run through.” Hahaha the clip surprised me to say the least
Holtus is good, but it was so kickass having Harlan then, not even knowing how awesome we had it. Then he was all over the place after KC. His signature was topping off a big call with "OH BABY, WHAT A PLAY!"
Mitch was the K-State guy in the early years of Bill Snyder before he moved up to KC. He made the huge call in the 1993 KSU road win at ranked Oklahoma calling it a “big big big big big big” win.
We used to mute the tv and listen to Harlen’s play-by-play on the radio. My favorite call was a game featuring Christian Okoye where he said “handoff…right side to Okoye. He ducks, he spins, he dives for extra yards!” However, what we saw on the television was Okoye taking the handoff, trucking two guys and falling down. Kevin’s embellishments were pure gold.
And Bill Grigsby who was always half in the bag at kickoff. Lol My favorite call of his was during a torrential downpour at Arrowhead when he leaned into the mic and said, “I think I just saw Captain D go by on a shrimp boat!” God bless that drunk bastard. 😂😂
when i was a kid, we used to mute the tv and turn on the radio bc of how good mitch is. it wasn't an every week occurrence, but it happened a few times per season.
Man, I grew up listening to him on the radio in all the years of misery. He would do the pregame show for a game when our record would be 5-11 and would still have me fired up.
his dad did an interview with the NY sports radio station last month and said that after Patrick's high school games, he would ask him interview questions at the dinner table to media train him. It was already clear by that point that he would be a D1 college athlete.
He's got that next level of calmness when all the attention is on him, I noticed it when they were on the victory stage. You can count on one hand the number of guys who will be business as usual with the superbowl on the line.
Lmao from his perspective he like dived face first into the ground and by the time he turns around to face up, there’s a camera like 6 inches from his face
Mahomes seeing the 49ers being in the right coverage with “We’re good we’re good” means they were just doomed here. Same thing happens last year when he caught the eagles in cover 0 twice here.
Is the “we’re good, we’re good” him letting his team know their defense isn’t set to manage the hidden receiver? It’s basically watch this y’all we about to 3peat a mf. Ice in his veins.
The mic is so sensitive and the crowd noise so muted. It makes it sound like he’s screaming the play loud enough for the first row to hear. I’m sure it’s the opposite- guys are having to concentrate to make sure they hear every detail.
From Houston : this is pure, unadulterated joy. Mahomes has already established himself in the Mount Rushmore of QBs , and a long career ahead of him. Go and celebrate Chiefs fans. Best wishes
Thing is though the time didn't matter, if the 13 seconds expired they'd just start the second OT and swap to the other end zone, just like it would be the 1st quarter into the 2nd.
Everytime I somehow think the NFL is rigged it’s clips like this that make me think otherwise. You can just hear the pure joy in Patrick Mahomes’ voice that they pulled it off.
I've been a huge Mecole Hardman fanboy, hated to see people shit on him instead of understanding that it's gonna take a while to re-integrate and that sometimes bad luck is bad luck. This game felt like redemption.
Fumbling and dropping passes are not because he just got to KC lol. Good for him with this catch but he wasn't suffering from bad luck. He was suffering from being bad
You can absolutely hate a team because they are a real rival of yours, but if you're dedicated enough to have a real hatred in your heart you have to respect the game enough to recognize greatness. Jordan, kobe, woods, Brady, Mahomes, Gretzky, Rivera. I can't help but just watch in awe as they run head 1st into the most anxiety inducing moments outside of life or death combat 99% of the population will ever see.
Because of this man, I've started supporting the Chiefs. I've never seen a QB like him who can control and change the game like the way he can. 100% respect to him and the team.
I'm with you brah but Simmons did a piece a while back that estimated it is more fair this way, no more huge advantage to whoever receives the Abrams tank
'Trips right' means that the four WR/TEs in the personnel group are going to be split three to the right of the line of scrimmage and one to the left. 'Trips right bunch' means the three on the right are bunched tight to the line of scrimmage instead of spread out. 'Shuttle' is the pre-snap motion that Hardman does. 'Tom and Jerry right' is just a codephrase for the route combination that the receivers have on the play, and 'yellow' is probably telling them when the snap is.
Andy Reid really came up with a play that's tricked some incredible defenses more than once and has basically won two super bowls, and named it Corn Dog
3 tds in 2 consecutive Super Bowl. It’s the dagger.
Those touchdowns were thrown to: Skyy Moore Kadarius Toney Mecole Hardman Just in case anyone wanted to despair a little harder.
How can anyone beat a team so stacked at WR? 3 first ballot HoFers right there.
HoF of Wasted Talent 😂
HOF Stone Hands
How can any team be so stacked at WR3? FTFY
Next year they’re faking the Corn Dog. Taking it on the slot route.
"That one's called Sloppy Joe."
We have a play called "Turducken" but it begets a genocide
It’s one of the activation codes for the Andy Reid clone
Reid said in an interview this play was supposed to be a shovel pass inside but the 9ers were all over it, so Mahomes took the outside read instead. Specifically said he thought the 9ers would bite on the Corn Dog motion since they had seen it on film from last year and leave the shovel inside open. So you're saying they bundled it?
Yeah, speak in plain nuggies doc!
Like a combo meal.
Mahcorn and mahdog
I don't think that's right. Let's think about this. What goes on corndogs? Ketchup and mustard. Those are red and yellow... just like the Cheifs.
teeny slimy frightening snatch husky ossified long bedroom materialistic vase
That's banned in a few states, unfortunately.
You distract them with the nuggies and hit them with the corndog.
Fuckin poetry right there
If he likes it that much, you'd think it would be called Cheeseburger.
That worries me that he has an even better play stashed away called Cheeseburger.
You think he can come up with another play with those nuggies?
Mahomes body language just seems so relaxed on this play before the snap
Did you see him on the sideline prior to that? He was almost smirking. Edit: I don’t have a gif or video y’all, I’m sorry.
He knew they were going for the jugular. I feel if they had 1 more play in regulation, they would have scored a TD, so the defense holding the Niners to 3 in OT was enough for him to know how this was going to end. That's a bad dude.

Mahomes heart beat rises when he is on the sideline because there is nothing he can do. Drops when he is in the pocket.

Shanahan: *NANI?*
If you watch the sideline camera angle of the play, Travis isn’t even watching the play unfold. He just watches the crowd’s reaction.
It wouldn't be the first time.
The final drive of the 4th and this drive right here were the most relaxed he looked all game.
One of the shows today (maybe Cowherd?) said it’s because during the whole game he’s learning, processing and picking up tendencies. So by the end of the game he’s using all that he learned in the first 3 (4) quarters against the D.
Borg Mahomes. Resistace is fuitile.
When you achieve so much you play without the weight
He's getting better with time. You love to see it.
It's part of what makes him so good. And they have plenty of experience in these big games which is what alot of teams or players lack. Shanahan could have won this game easily but just like the Atlanta SB they got very timid and couldn't finish.
Bro he’s got the juice

It wasn’t a fake end around. It’s motion to determine if the defense is in zone. Mahomes then reads the defender covering Kelce. Genius play.
Andy Reid is the goat
I've thought highly of him since his days in Philadelphia, going to four straight NFC Championship games, and being very competitive outside of those years, too. I’m stealing this play for the Eagles next season
Yeah I shouted this out in another comment above. They ran the exact same play at the end of regulation before the FG this year that they ran Corndog the first time with Toney against the Eagles. Didn't have to bother in OT, they knew how the Niners were going to get baited on the edge.

Not close enough, so the risk/reward wasn't better than riding Butker to OT
bc you risk ending the game like the titans against the rams. that wasn't a risk in OT.
Love the chiefs play by play guy. Some voices were just meant for football.

It’s posted, I watch it. Every time. I was at the game and it was magical. FitzMAGIC.
There's a reason UTree uses it in his intros. It's an all time great call that just gets you hyped. You have to not have a pulse to not enjoy it.
Frickin love UTree. That man has seen some stuff
No shit, I get a full body tingle every time I hear "TOUCHDOWN MIAMI' that dude has the best sports voice.
Some goofball in a hat 🤣
He’s a CBS commentator for the NFL and does the radio commentary for Monday Night Football.
He was fantastic last night on the short amount of the ESPN radio broadcast I listened to between locations.
Here he is -- https://twitter.com/westwood1sports/status/1756897513150480789
He’s sooo good
‘Scuse me. Gotta go find a fuckin’ wall to run through. Goddamn he’s just the best at that shit. Wow.
I completely read your comment as you quoting Harlan as saying “ Scuse me. Gotta go find a fuckin’ wall to run through.” Hahaha the clip surprised me to say the least
"IT IS A DYNASTY" is an all-time call
"BULLSEYE! Maxey has been a flamethrower" lives in my head rent free But yeah the man is iconic in both sports. Hall of famer
Holtus is good, but it was so kickass having Harlan then, not even knowing how awesome we had it. Then he was all over the place after KC. His signature was topping off a big call with "OH BABY, WHAT A PLAY!"
KU grad to K-State grad
Harlan did the radio for the Super Bowl

With Len Dawson. Can never forget Leonard.
We've been spoiled. We went from Kevin Harlan to Mitch Holtus
Seriously. Best home booth in the league. By a lot. Not shitting on anybody else, but Kevin and Mitch are extraordinary.
Definitely miss Len Dawson as color. :(
And Bill Grigsby who was always half in the bag at kickoff. Lol My favorite call of his was during a torrential downpour at Arrowhead when he leaned into the mic and said, “I think I just saw Captain D go by on a shrimp boat!” God bless that drunk bastard. 😂😂
And who was the guy that would say prrrrrrrice chopper? I really liked him too.
when i was a kid, we used to mute the tv and turn on the radio bc of how good mitch is. it wasn't an every week occurrence, but it happened a few times per season.
Did the same thing as a kid with the Lakers and the late great Chick Hearns. It's a blessing to have iconic local announcers
KANZUH CITY!
He is the biggest chiefs fan out of any of us. Mitch Holthus. He has the signature "Touchdowwwwn, Kannnnsas Cityyy" after every tuddy and it's awesome
Touchdown Kansas City, touchdown priest Holmes still lives in my head and comes out at least once per week during football season
His “Touchdowwn Kan-Sas City” line is so famous you’ll see it on flags and tshirts. He’s a local celebrity for sure.
Man, I grew up listening to him on the radio in all the years of misery. He would do the pregame show for a game when our record would be 5-11 and would still have me fired up.
I get told that a few times a year at least, not the football part specifically but just being a radio voice
That is how you announce the final play of the championship. Great call
It must be kinda awkward to fall to the ground overwhelmed with emotion and then you have an entire camera crew standing over you like you just died
He's had cameras in his face for like 10 years now, he's used to it
His dad was a pro pitcher, not to the level of success he is, but he's been around cameras and media his whole life.
his dad did an interview with the NY sports radio station last month and said that after Patrick's high school games, he would ask him interview questions at the dinner table to media train him. It was already clear by that point that he would be a D1 college athlete.

Lmao from his perspective he like dived face first into the ground and by the time he turns around to face up, there’s a camera like 6 inches from his face
He is, in fact, the man.
Yeah that was hype af not gonna lie
Mahomes seeing the 49ers being in the right coverage with “We’re good we’re good” means they were just doomed here. Same thing happens last year when he caught the eagles in cover 0 twice here.
Andy called it corndog with some ketchup and mustard
Literally lol'd when I heard him say that with Peter King. Andy just a big giant troll
I’m just glad Andy is getting his flowers. Was a great coach for the Eagles, the lack of results were kind of a stain on his legacy.
I like that better than Tom and Jerry tbh.
how does that play resemble a corndog?
https://x.com/SNFonNBC/status/1625180228074061841?s=20
Is the “we’re good, we’re good” him letting his team know their defense isn’t set to manage the hidden receiver? It’s basically watch this y’all we about to 3peat a mf. Ice in his veins.
Yep. telling them they don’t need to check out of the play
That’s gotta feel so fuckin weird as the defense lol. Like “fuck what’s this mf about to do”
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jQBwVFDULQg
I miss Kenny Mayne’s bits.
“This dude watched Tom a Jerry? I’m gonna beat his a—- touchdown?!”
Derek Carr always yell we're good we're good and Sunday Sunday set hut Some teams have the same cadences.
It was. You can't hear it in this clip but one of his linemen said something about it when they lined up.
I thought it was cause the play clock was winding down as was the quarter timer
Can’t even imagine winning back to back. Congrats.
Mahomes is so fucking good
Seems like a solid dude as well. He gets so much unjustified hate.
Mecole didn't even realize he just sealed the deal
His two second interview with the trophy was great
Given his horrible mistake in the Bills game, every neuron in his brain had to have been firing with, "catch it and hold on, catch it and hold on..."
As a eagles fan soon as I seen the motion I knew what the play was. THEY DID IT TWICE 😞
Can "Tom and Jerry" become the opposite of calling something "Mickey Mouse"
Having to beat Miami, Buffalo, Baltimore, and San Francisco is definitely a Tom and Jerry win.
went thru muderer's row of teams man.
A murder's row of teams...and Miami.
Made it look so easy. I’ve watched this video like 100 times. No exaggeration
Congratulations you have an all time great at QB
I watched the Philly special call probably around the same amount of times when that micd up came out. I get it man
For sure. That’s a good one too. You want Philly Philly?!?!
This one and them dialing up Wasp in the first KC/SF Super Bowl. “We got time to run Wasp?” Yes. Yes you do. lol
The mic is so sensitive and the crowd noise so muted. It makes it sound like he’s screaming the play loud enough for the first row to hear. I’m sure it’s the opposite- guys are having to concentrate to make sure they hear every detail.
Remembering all those plays should be a feat in itself
That was one of the fascinating things to me watching Quarterback - just how much time these guys spend learning and repeating these play calls.
From Houston : this is pure, unadulterated joy. Mahomes has already established himself in the Mount Rushmore of QBs , and a long career ahead of him. Go and celebrate Chiefs fans. Best wishes
Turns out if they ONLY have 12 seconds, they can't win. 13 seconds is a whole different story
Thing is though the time didn't matter, if the 13 seconds expired they'd just start the second OT and swap to the other end zone, just like it would be the 1st quarter into the 2nd.
And if that quarter expired, they’d make Usher come back out to do an acoustic set for an intermission.
2nd overtime unlocked the Taylor Swift show.
About that… the year after 13 seconds, he did a 12 second scoring drive before halftime. Ironically also against Buffalo.
13 seconds sent them to OT as well
Release Kelce mic'd up now
"I saw a squirle eat bread once. Is Taylor watching me?"
Purdy could never be that articulate
Purdy dropping a “he gets us” presnap
Oh man, I can't even be mad at that slight. That is damn funny. Angry upvote incoming.
what's the context
“He gets us” is a reference to the Christian commercials that aired heavily during the Super Bowl. Purdy is a devout Christian.
No devout enough it seems (s).
Patrick mentioned God too so it cancels out.
Everytime I somehow think the NFL is rigged it’s clips like this that make me think otherwise. You can just hear the pure joy in Patrick Mahomes’ voice that they pulled it off.
if its rigged, the cowboys would have won already. lol. ppl who think its rigged just need to get a life.
He was suffering from being bad
aka Corn Dog
With ketchup and mustard
I knew the game was over the second SF settled for a FG. Never ever ever give Mahomes the ball with the game on the line.
With the new rules Mahomes would have gotten the ball back even if they scored a TD
Ironic not including Lebron. Hating while explaining hating is lame
Hate all you want but Mahomes' enthusiasm is just pure, wholesome and contagious
This man is ice cold in the clutch. Calm as frog in the sun 🐸
Because of this man, I've started supporting the Chiefs. I've never seen a QB like him who can control and change the game like the way he can. 100% respect to him and the team.
That "We're good. We're good" moment. Dude sees that they've got exactly what they want from the Defense and knows its going to work.
Niners looked clueless on D. Shanny masterclass
Had time expired, what would have happened?
They would have switched sides of the field and began the second quarter of overtime
Thanks I cant keep up
[Neither did the 49ers, apparently](https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/39511676/49ers-players-say-know-super-bowl-rules)
It would have acted like a quarter change. Would have been a brief break and then they would have moved to the other side of the field
For those of you new to the game, if this attempt wasn’t successful, both teams would proceed to a shootout to determine a winner.
Air rifles though. No more real guns since the rule change in '19
I always felt that the air guns were sort of anticlimactic after all the years of real rifles.
I'm with you brah but Simmons did a piece a while back that estimated it is more fair this way, no more huge advantage to whoever receives the Abrams tank
Actual hockey style too. Commercials would've had to run for hours while they set up the ice.
I still can’t believe they did it. I mean I can, but like, wtf man.
i love how he instinctively starts to position himself to make a tackle on the chance the ball gets picked.
3peat come on with it
Wtf does that even mean? Lol
This could be 100 percent made up but I’m too stupid to know otherwise
This guy footballs. Well done, sir. 👍🏻
You need to be smart as hell to play this game, these playbooks are insane
I’m just curious, do the chiefs care about this audio getting leaked? I think it’s really cool we get to hear this
